Update on 'Put a penny in the old man's hat'.

So far we have received only one donation. If we did not really need your help, I would not have asked. Without help we cannot accept any more monkeys in need.

Please put a penny in the old man's hat. If you haven't got a penny a ha'penny will do. If you don't have a ha'penny God bless you.

Christmas is getting close now and things are rather tight financially at Canaote. The International economic downturn is hitting us hard. The pound against the dollar has dropped from two dollars to the pound to under one and a half. My meager U.K pension is stretched as far as I can. We have no other income.

Thanks to some generous support we were able to complete the cementing of the floors of the enclosures and we are already reaping benefit from that with a much lower mosquito count.

We have had to shelve some of our plans. We wanted to build two rooms to enable us to accept volunteer aid from foreign students and professionals. This is now on permanent hold unless we receive some help.

Our local inflation here in Venezuela is running at an all time high. Obviously this affects the price of food for the children as well as ourselves. We have now sixteen children to feed.

Our work has never been more needed.
People are leaving Venezuela. Some are abandoning their animals to the street. This includes Monkeys and we already have several for that reason.

Update on Saco

We ran tests on Saco's feces. He has parasites although not a serious infestation yet. He has blastocitys homini 7 and quiste de giardia lamblia x 10. We began treatment right away. I guess he is about 9 months old. He appears in good health. Good appetite, red gums, and firm pooh pooh. Superficial examination of his teeth show black areas. This could be staining from eating certain kinds of leaves. I will take a better look tomorrow. He appears to be well fed. He is still in quarantine until we give him the all clear. Then we have to find a suitable place for him to live. For a wild monkey it surprises me that he is easy to handle. A more detailed look at him revealed a deep wound at the base of the tail. Fairly certain to have been caused by a shotgun. This child was offered to us even though we have vigorously shown the local community that we are absolutely against this wicked trade.

Él llamó a nuestra puerta. No sabemos si lo llevaron.

No podemos decepcionarlo a él.

Seventeen and still rising.

Mathew 7:7 and Luke 11:9 Seek and ye shall find; knock and the door will be opened to you.

Some six months ago a group of local boys came to Canaote. One of them was carrying a sack over his shoulder. He partly open the sack to show a small red faced monkey. The boy asked me if I would like to buy the him. I discovered that this baby Howler had been captured after his mother had been killed with a stone from a catapult.

Naturally I was both angry and sad that local people had not yet understood my message. The animals of the forest are not goods to be sold and their lives and their children plundered. They were given the wild lands by God as a right to live in peace.

I shouted at the children and told them to go away and return the monkey to where they had captured him, hoping that the baby monkey would be accepted by his tribe.

The months passed until yesterday when during a heavy rain storm we notice a small red bundle sheltering in a tree near our enclosures. This was indeed the same monkey. We theorised that he had heard the calls of the Canaote monkeys and thought that here he might find his mother and family.

He knocked on our door. We cannot turn him away. We cannot disappoint him. We dried him and fed him and put him in an enclosure to await health tests. We cannot give him back his mother but we can give him love and care and the company of others of his kind. Maybe we can also find a surrogate mother for him .

Oh Yes, before I forget. He first arrived in a sack, now his name is Saco.

We now have seventeen children to feed, please donate if you can. We do need your help.

And now for a change the Good news.

Ramona the street Monkey is alive and well. Miraculously returned to her tree in the streets of Tinaco. A new photo as soon as I can visit her again. I took a few the other day with my cell phone but the darn thing has gone on the blink.

A busy week

Last weekend we had many visitors. The family of Lucio drove down from Caracas, starting out very early in the morning and arriving here at about ten o'clock. The family of Jako arrive from Tinaco at the same time.

Although Gilda was visiting Lucio in particular, she always finds time to give the others some fuss. In our picture you can see her with Jako our lady newcomer. The children were very appreciative of the gifts of two brightly coloured hammocks. Monkeys love hammocks.

Jako has begun her 'get to know you', program. At first she was very timid, and only momentarily leaving the safety of my lap. I have been gradually introducing her to life in the enclosure and the company of other Monkeys. As the days have gone by she has become bolder and more sure of herself. Schatov and Lucio have behaved like perfect gentlemen. They have shown no aggressiveness. Monito, being very young has been a bit of a clown but all in friendly and encouraging sprit.

Yesterday was the breakthrough when her human family visited again. She is now sitting with the others and joining in their games. She is using the house and seems comfortable to share it with the others. So much so that last night I let her sleep in the house with the three boys. She really has adapted very well and quickly. This morning she joined in the chorus and I was very thrilled to see and hear that. She is also using all the toys; the swings, the walkways and the ropes. She is very athletic.

It has been interesting to see the changes in behaviour of the two adult males. Both Schatov and Lucio have been posturing in the macho style of Howlers. I publish this time a photograph of Schatov with his fur puffed up as for battle (that is Monito on the left). There is also a group photograph of human family Jako. On their last visit they brought many food gifts and a beautiful hammock, and spent many hours assisting in the maintenance and cleaning of all the enclosures. This work was much appreciated.

Jako llegó a Cañaote.

Sábado, 15 de Noviembre de 2008

HPIM1527-1

No combativo y pacifico.

Jako arrives at Canaote

HPIM1515

On Friday night the waif arrived. She is the child that Ramona has been fostering. Her name is Jako. She is one year old and her birthday will now be yesterdays date, the day she arrived at Canaote. She is a large and healthy Howler monkey. Looking at her face I am reminded of MonaLisa, their features are very similar. We have not yet decided on a plan for her. Many people do not realise that you can't just put a bunch of monkeys together and hope for the best. Just like humans they have their likes and dislikes. Of course there are also hereditary factors involved. For example in the wild, when a male alpha takes over a group, he will kill any young males that are not his. This characteristic, perhaps modified by human association, still exists in in Monkeys in captivity.

We have spent the whole day today, rotating Jako among our enclosures. We started overnight by putting her together with young Erik. This was not a bad match. But you can't expect a positive result from just one contact. At breakfast time we introduced Jako to Schatov, Lucio and Monito. They showed an interest in her. They did not overly interfere with her and I was quite hopeful that with a little patience some good relations could be set up. Schatov and surprisingly Lucio showed her courtesy. They sat beside her and showed interest but very well behaved.

Later we moved Jako into the enclosure of Maniña, Tutti and Miss Billy. The idea here was to sample attitudes among monkeys who were not likely to be competitive. Tutti wanted to play with the new comer. Maniña being spade did not show any sexual interest and typically Miss Billy kept herself to herself. This I thought was a positive environment for Jako to start her life here at Canaote. Non combatative  and peaceful.

Frankly Jako couldn't wait to get out of there.

I decided on a slow introductory program for Jako and the Schatov group. We reentered their enclosure four times during the course of the day and on each occasion noticed a softening of Jako's attitude and a greater willingness to involve herself in the activity of the enclosure. Finally towards evening she entered their house and stayed there for quite a while. During that time Schatov and Lucio both entered the house and there was not a bad reaction. It was fascinating to see how the males courted Jako. There were some great displays of gymnastic ability. Clearly they wanted to show her their manhood. But it was done in a surprisingly  delicate and polite way.

This program shows a positive result and we will continue with it over the next few days.

The background story to Jako is still unclear. I will report on this further when the smoke has cleared.

Our picture shows Jako getting comfortable in my quarters on her first night here at Canaote.

Hemos seguido visitando a Ramona.

At Canaote we have operated an outreach for many years. Outreach is when we go out into the community and visit captive monkeys. We offer help and advice on food, conditions and health. Our team varies according to the needs of the monkey. When needed we provide a health care specialist or recommend a veterinarian known to be an expert in the particular problem. Not all Vets are experts with small animals.

Today we received some very sad news, Ramona, a monkey  that we were able to visit for some years, has died. She had been moved to a new home by her owners and we were not subsequently able to locate her. You can read her full story by looking up our blogging on Saturday, November 25, 2006 and later stories concerning her. We have not yet had any information about the cause of her death. The rest of the story is not yet complete because we hear from Gabriela, that Ramona  had fostered a young female Howler. We are being asked to accept this waif at Canaote. As I write I have received a phone call telling me that the owner of the waif is about to arrive here. We will post more about the new arrival soon.

Our picture shows Ramona enjoying a bunch of fresh offering directly from the forest that morning. In the picture she is at her original street home. You can see her chain at the top of the picture.

I was fortunate to have 'Macbeth' as my schoolboy English Language subject. Possibly that is why those word frequently ring in my ears when I am with MonaLisa, Emma and Nancy. Here we have three eligible ladies. But here is a problem. They have yet to find a male who they fancy. Both MonaLisa and Emma get involved with bitter fighting whenever we attempt matchmaking and Nancy just joins in the melee.

Somehow they remind me of the three witches in Macbeth as they sit together. Roaring out the morning chorus.

Our pictures show Emma top right, with Nancy in the middle and MonaLisa posing on the swing on the left.

'not-forget-me', esta en movimiento y en Ritmo".

Lunes, noviembre 03, 2008

'Forget me not', is a movin' and a groovin'.

There is a special change to 'not-forget-me.blogspot.com' tonight. We are going multi lingual.

Gabriela, always a strong supporter of the Simian Samaritans and the activities of Canaote Rescue, has agreed to translate our reports into Castiliano. This will mean that our Spanish speaking friends will be able to follow our activities more readily. This is a wonderful step forward. I am sure that this will encourage more people to follow our work and get involved in Monkey rescue. Thank you Gabriela from all of us. In particular another big kiss from Maniña.

As a matter of interest. this photograph, recently appeared the journal of the Simian Society of America, along with a number of articles by myself and Gabriela

Gabbie finally gets her new family and home.

Gabbie has been waiting here at Canaote for news of her final home. She is a wonderful little girl. She has been brave in the face of her injuries and I can say that her recovery is well under way. She has big eyes and views the world intelligently. She loves television so I hope her new home has one available for her.

Yesterday morning her new Papa arrived. He came by autobus from Valencia and we met him in Tinaco. Then quickly transferred him to Canaote. Julian is her new Papa. As soon as he arrived he wanted to hold her. He stayed with us through Saturday till Sunday morning. Naturally I had many questions for Julian and maybe I bored him with too much advice. After all, he has been a Papa to two Howler monkeys for many years. We already had an acquaintance with him because he had visited us on a previous occasion.

A young baby poses many problems that are not apparent with older monkeys. Sudden refusal of food or drink is among them. These symptoms have to be recognised and addressed. Bad interpretation can be life threatening. All the time I was with Gabbie and her new dad my feelings of satisfaction with his understanding of her needs was reinforced. They spent quality time together during the day and in the evening she slept comfortably in his arms. That night they were together and the night was uninterrupted.

Early Sunday morning we were able to take them both to the station in Tinaco. Within a few hours I received a call from Julian to say that they had arrived safely at his home in Valencia and that the journey had been uneventful.

I am certain that this is the final move she will experience. She deserves love and a safe home. She was cruelly ripped from her family in the trees and that cannot be mended. But we can be sure that she lives a good life among her own people with the help of her human friends. Julian also cares for Felipe, a gentle adult male. I am certain that he will also look out for her.
