The King of Spain's daughter.

Katty arrived at Canaote in the afternoon, last Saturday. She is a baby of only two months. She is the third small child to be brought to us in just a few months. The scandalous trade in wild life goes on unabated,. When oh When will the authorities act decisively to stop this wicked trade? This poor little mite torn from her mother and the mother assassinated.
Our picture shows her this morning in a small nut tree in front of our compound. She liked it yesterday so here we are again today. It brought to mind the nursery rhyme, 'I had a little nut tree'. Particularly because the original poem told of the visit of King Ferdinand of Spain, with his daughter Katherine or modern nick name 'Katty'. Read on.

So what has it to do with our baby Katty?

I had a little nut tree,
Nothing would it bear
But a silver nutmeg,
And a golden pear;
The King of Spain's daughter
Came to visit me,
And all for the sake
Of my little nut tree.

Her dress was made of crimson,
Jet black was her hair,
She asked me for my nut tree
And my golden pear.
I said, "So fair a princess
Never did I see,
I'll give you all the fruit
From my little nut tree.

The characters in the nursery rhyme 'I had a little nut tree' are believed to refer to the visit of the Royal House of Spain to King Henry VII's English court in 1506. The 'King of Spain's daughter' refers to the daughter of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. There were two daughters, Princess Juana and her sister Katherine of Aragon. The princess in the nursery rhyme is probably Katherine of Aragon who was betrothed to Prince Arthur, the heir to the throne of England. Arthur died and Katherine eventually married King Henry VIII. It was sad that "So fair a princess" had such a difficult life with Henry as she was the first of Henry's six wives and discarded by the King to make way for Anne Boleyn. Queen Katherine was much loved by the British people who hated her replacement, who they called 'The Great Whore'. The young, beautiful princess relates to the young Katherine, as a princess and is immortalised in this old nursery rhyme .

La hija del rey de España.

Katty llegó a Cañaote de la tarde, el sábado pasado. Ella es un bebé de sólo dos meses. Es el tercer hijo pequeño que han traído a nosotros en tan sólo unos pocos meses. El comercio escandaloso de la vida silvestre sigue sin disminuir, ¿Cuando las autoridades van  actuar con decisión para detener este comercio? Esta pobre monita fue arrancada de su madre  luego de haberla asesinado.
Nuestra imagen les muestra esta mañana en un árbol de la nuez pequeña en frente de nuestro complejo. A ella le gustó ayer, así que aquí estamos de nuevo hoy. Me hizo recordar la canción de cuna, 'He tenido un poco de frutos secos ". Sobre todo porque el poema original hablaba de la visita del rey Fernando de España, con su hija Katherine o moderno apodo 'Katty'. Sigue leyendo.

Los personajes de la canción infantil "Tuve un poco de nueces de árbol" se cree que se refieren a la visita de la Casa Real de España a la corte del rey Enrique VII Inglés en 1506. El 'Rey de la hija de España "se refiere a la hija del rey Fernando y la reina Isabel de España. Había dos hijas, la princesa Juana y su hermana Catalina de Aragón. La princesa en la canción infantil es, probablemente, Catalina de Aragón que estaba prometida con el príncipe Arturo, el heredero al trono de Inglaterra. Arthur murió y Katherine se casó con el rey Enrique VIII. Fue triste que "tan hermosa princesa" tuviera una vida difícil con Henry como ella era la primera de las seis esposas de Henry y fue desecha por el Rey para dar paso a Ana Bolena. La reina Catalina era muy querido por el pueblo británico que odiaban a su sustitución, a quien llama "La Gran Ramera '. Black Sapote time.

Our picture shows poor Daniel fighting off a crowd of monkeys wanting their share. Even the wild girl Silvia has joined the attack. In the bowl there is a large helping of Black Sapote just collected from our arboretum. From time to time I have shown you various fruits that we have available. This is the second time we have had a large crop of Black Sapote. It seems that each time the harvest is bigger. The monkeys love them. One of the benefits we derive from our botanic garden, is the large number of tropical fruit we have available to augment the children's meals. We are able to make our own significant contribution to the feeding of our children from the garden.

But what does the meat of the fruit look like close up?  Our picture below. Its very dark brown/purple. Sticky with a consistency of shoe polish. A taste out of this world.

 Diospyros digyna, the Black Sapote, is a species of persimmon that is native to eastern Mexico and Central America south to Colombia. Other names include Chocolate Pudding Fruit, Chocolate Persimmon and (in Spanish) Zapote

Zapote negro.


Nuestra foto muestra al pobre Daniel luchando contra una multitud de monos que quieren su parte. Incluso la chica salvaje Silvia se ha unido al ataque. En el cuenco hay una gran porción de Zapote Negro sólo se obtiene de nuestros árboles. De vez en cuando he mostrado varias frutas que tenemos disponibles. Esta es la segunda vez que hemos tenido una gran cosecha de Zapote Negro. Parece que cada vez la cosecha es más grande. A los monos les encanta. Uno de los beneficios que se derivan de nuestro jardín botánico, es la gran cantidad de frutas tropicales que tenemos disponibles para aumentar las comidas de los niños. Somos capaces de hacer nuestra propia contribución significativa a la alimentación de nuestros niños desde el jardín.

 Diospyros digyna, el Sapote Negro, es una especie de caqui que es nativa del este de México y Centroamérica hacia el sur hasta Colombia. Otros nombres incluyen frutas Pudding de chocolate, chocolate y caqui Zapote (en español)

Loki the baby howler in the Smithsonian National Zoo is dead.

I was very saddened today to hear that Loki, the baby black howler monkey in The Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, has died.
I am not happy with the way the zoo have  handled this. Firstly for months after the baby was born they declared it was a boy. I pointed out their error and even sent them photographs to prove it. They went into denial. They never admitted their error. Now I hear from a correspondent on the friends of the Zoo page on Facebook that she has died. But no official announcement. Maybe politically to soon after the death of their Panda Cub. They are now in official mourning for the Panda baby. But no word about Loki. Again they have gone into denial.

I really don´t understand why they have Howlers in the zoo. They are not high risk endangered. They are in an entirely inappropriate climate. They admit themselves they have had no luck raising baby howlers for many years. I wonder sometimes if it is just for the benefit of the crowd of vets and trainees. All wandering about with their face masks and rubber gloves. I wonder how she died?

Loki el aullador bebé en el parque zoológico nacional Smithsonian ha muerto.



Me entristeció mucho hoy saber que Loki, el bebé mono aullador negro en el parque zoológico nacional Smithsonian en Washington, habia muerto.
No estoy contento con la forma en que el zoo ha manejado esto. En primer lugar porque varios meses después de que naciera el bebé, declararon que era un niño. Le señalé su error e incluso envie las fotografías para demostrarlo. Entraron en la negación. Nunca admitieron su error. Ahora que escucho de un interlocutor por los amigos de la página Zoo en Facebook que ella ha muerto. Pero no hay ningún anuncio oficial. Tal vez políticamente poco después de la muerte de su cachorro de panda. Ahora están de luto oficial por el bebé Panda. Pero ni una palabra acerca de Loki. Una vez que han entrado en la negación.

Yo realmente no entiendo por qué tienen Howlers en el zoológico. Ellos no están en peligro de alto riesgo. Están en un clima totalmente inapropiado. Ellos mismos admiten que no han tenido suerte en criar monos aulladores bebé durante muchos años. A veces me pregunto si es sólo para el beneficio de la multitud de los veterinarios y estudiantes. Todos vagando con sus mascarillas y guantes de goma. Me pregunto cómo murió?

Water, Water everywhere but not a drop to drink.

My story begins more than 18 years ago, when I bought Canaote. At that time, the water came from an old well nearby the house. I was told by the original owner that he had installed the pump some 20 years before. So that pump had worked daily for 38 years. One day a year ago, the pump ceased to work. Recently we discovered that the weather had finally eaten through the plastic covering of the electric cable and shorted out the pump. In spite of expert attention, it was found impossible to find the spare parts needed to repair the pump. This was a potentially disastrous situation as we depend entirely on that well for our water. Water for ourselves, washing, showering, clothes, and of course the water for the monkeys in our care. The situation became critical when we found that it would cost about 1500 US$ to replace the pump. We simply did not have the money. 

We had some help. The Co Op that operates nearby started to fill our tank with river water, using their petrol driven pump. They did this once a day. This provided water for all non potable purposes, showering, washing dishes etc. The local Co Op are good men, and we have had an excellent relationship with them, basically always helping each other where possible.

A neighbour, some ten minutes walk away, has a pure water well. She allowed my staff to visit daily to fill a milk churn with water. At first this was an easy task. The churn was loaded into our car, Ford Bronco, and driven the short distance. This all changed when the car was stolen. Now it was necessary either to shift the churn either by motorbike, one person holding the churn whilst the other drove, or by pushing it to the well using a wheel barrow. Altogether it had become an unpopular but necessary daily chore. 

I publicized our plight on Facebook and our Blog. Soon there were many expressions of sympathy but nothing practical. We needed funds to buy the pump, to transport it when it was purchased, then for it to be fitted. An unexpected cost was the ravage of time on the infrastructure. Much of the heavy metal  tubing and most of the electric cable had to be replaced. The rubber tubing in particular, was a big number. Some two hundred meters from the well to the tank on a small adjoining hill had to be renewed.

Finally a few weeks ago the offer came and the pump was purchased. A few days ago the pump arrived here in Canaote. Yesterday the pump was submerged and the first water pulled up from a our deep well. Today, our original water tank was cleaned of the silt that had collected from the river water and pure mountain water once again flowed into Canaote.

The pump  purchased completely by one party. Significant contributions were made by others which paid for the installation and the replacements to the infrastructure. 

 They have our deep gratitude I have not named them to protect them against unsolicited requests.

I think the pictures speak for themselves. In the one I am admiring the arrival of the pump and in the other I am sampling the water which could not have tasted better had it been Champaign.

Agua, agua por todas partes, pero ni una gota para beber.

Mi historia comienza hace más de 18 años, cuando compré Cañaote. En ese momento, el agua provenía de un pozo cercano a la casa. Me dijeron que el dueño original  había instalado la bomba  unos 20 años antes. La bomba había trabajado todos los días durante 38 años. Un día, hace un año, la bomba dejó de funcionar. Recientemente hemos descubierto que el tiempo había comido la cubierta de plástico del cable eléctrico y hubo un cortocircuito en la bomba. A pesar de la atención de los expertos, se consideró imposible encontrar las piezas de repuesto necesarias para reparar la bomba. Esta era una situación potencialmente desastrosa ya que dependemos totalmente de ese bien para nuestra agua. Agua para nosotros mismos, lavarnos, ducharnos, lavar ropa, y por supuesto el agua para los monos a nuestro cuidado. La situación se tornó crítica cuando nos enteramos que costaría unos 1500 dólares EE.UU.,  reemplazar la bomba. Simplemente no teníamos el dinero.

Tuvimos un poco de ayuda. De la cooperativa que opera cerca empezaron a llenar nuestro tanque con agua de río, utilizando su motor de gasolina. Lo hicieron una vez al día. Esto proporcionó agua para todos los fines no potables, ducharse, lavar los platos, etc de la cooperativa local son hombres de bien, y hemos tenido una excelente relación con ellos, en el fondo siempre ayudándose unos a otros cuando sea posible.

Un vecino, a unos diez minutos a pie, tiene un pozo de agua pura. Ellos permitieron a mi personal  visitarlos todos los días para llenar una cántara de agua. Al principio se trataba de una tarea fácil. La Cantara se cargaba en el coche, Ford Bronco, y conducido a la corta distancia. Todo esto cambió cuando el coche fue robado. Ahora era necesario hacerlo en moto, una persona que llevaba la cantara mientras el otro conducía, o empujándolo hacia el pozo utilizando una carretilla. En total, se había convertido en una tarea diaria impopular pero necesaria.

Yo publique nuestra situación en Facebook y en nuestro blog. Pronto hubo muchas expresiones de simpatía, pero nada práctico. Necesitábamos fondos para comprar la bomba, para transportarla cuando se compró, para que pudiera ser instalada. Un costo inesperado fue los estragos del tiempo sobre la infraestructura. Gran parte de la tubería de metal pesada y la mayor parte del cable eléctrico tuvo que ser sustituido. La manguera de goma  en particular, es muy larga. Unos doscientos metros desde el pozo hasta el tanque en una colina adyacente también  tuvo que ser renovada.

Finalmente hace unas semanas llegó la oferta y la bomba fue comprada. Hace unos días, la bomba llegó en Cañaote. Ayer, la bomba fue instalada, estaba sumergida y el agua detuvimos al principio de nuestra un pozo profundo. Hoy en día, nuestro tanque de agua fue limpiado por limo que había recogido de las aguas del río y el agua pura de pozo fluyó en Cañaote.

La bomba comprada totalmente por una de las partes. Contribuciones importantes fueron hechas por otras personas que pagaron para la instalación y los reemplazos a la infraestructura.

 Tienen nuestra profunda gratitud no los he llamado para protegerlos contra las peticiones no solicitadas.

Creo que las imágenes hablan por sí mismas. En el que estoy admirando la llegada de la bomba y en el otro me toma de muestras del agua que no podría haber probado mejor si hubiera sido Champaign.

St. Francis Prayer for peace.

In Venezuela, late on the 7th of October 2012, we will know which of the presidential candidates has won. Many will be overjoyed at the victory of their man. But many will be saddened and even angry because their favourite has lost. This is a time when Christians should open their hearts to forgive and to seek peace with others.
Here is the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi whose day it is today.

At Franciscan churches, a friar with brown robe and white cord often welcomes each animal with a special prayer on this day. The Blessing of Pets usually goes like this:

“Blessed are you, Lord God, maker of all living creatures. You called forth fish in the sea, birds in the air and animals on the land. You inspired St. Francis to call all of them his brothers and sisters. We ask you to bless this pet. By the power of your love, enable it to live according to your plan. May we always praise you for all your beauty in creation. Blessed are you, Lord our God, in all your creatures! Amen.
 As the prayer is offered, the pet is gently sprinkled with holy water.
Some people criticize the amount and cost of care given to pets. People are more important, they say. Care for poor people instead of poodles. And certainly our needy fellow humans should not be neglected.
However, I believe every creature is important. The love we give to a pet, and receive from a pet, can draw us more deeply into the larger circle of life, into the wonder of our common relationship to our Creator.

San Francis Oración por la paz.

En Venezuela, la noche del 7 de octubre de 2012, se sabrá cuál de los candidatos presidenciales ha ganado. Muchos estarán contentos por la victoria de su hombre. Pero muchos se entristecerán y enojaran porque incluso su favorito ha perdido. Este es un momento en que los cristianos deben abrir sus corazones para perdonar y buscar la paz con los demás.
Esta es la oración de San Francisco de Asís, cuyo día es hoy.

   Señor, haz de mí un instrumento de tu paz;
     donde haya odio, siembro yo amor;
     cuando haya injuria, perdón;
     donde haya duda, fe;

and your mobile will search any existing network in your area to establish the emergency
number for you, and interestingly this number 112 can be dialled even
if the keypad is locked. This works on all phones worldwide and is free. It is the equivalent of 000.

SECOND
Have you  locked your keys in the car?

Does  your car have remote keyless entry? This may come in handy someday. Good
reason to own a cell phone:
If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at home, call
someone at  home on their mobile phone from your cell phone.

Hold  your cell phone about a foot from
your car door and have the person at your  home press the unlock
button, holding it near the mobile phone on their end.
Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive
your keys to you. Distance is no object. You could be thousands of miles away,
and if you can reach someone who has the other 'remote' for your car, you can
unlock the doors (or the trunk).
A  Note: I didn’t believe this when I heard about it! A friend rang his daughter in Sydney from Perth they went on holiday.  She had the spare car key.  They tried it out and it unlocked their car over a mobile phone!'

but at  least you know that whoever stole it can't use/sell it either. If
everybody done this, there would be no point in people
stealing mobile phones.
This secret is also in the fine print of most mobile phone manuals.  It was created for the very purpose of trying to prevent phones from being stolen.

Also -ATM   PIN Number Reversal - Good to Know  !!

If you should ever be forced by a robber to withdraw money from an ATM
machine, you  can notify the police by entering your PIN # in
reverse. For example, if your  pin number is 1234, then you would put
in 4321. The ATM system recognizes  that your PIN number is backwards
from the ATM card you placed in the  machine. The machine will still
give you the money you requested, but unknown  to the robber, the
police will be immediately dispatched to the location.
All ATM’s carry this emergency sequencer by law.
