It's been a busy day.

It's been a busy day for Toula, one of our Capuchin monkeys. Her day started with a shampoo. Now this was a little traumatic as she didn't know at first what was happening. She was transfered over to the house so that we could give her warm water in her shower and shampoo. Little did she realize that we had another surprise in store for her. After the shampoo drama. She was taken to the Jane/Sofia enclosure. As from today, she is to share accommodation with Jane an Sofia. After the initial surprise wore off, she soon settled into the life in the new enclosure. Its great for her to have two friends to play with. As for Jane and Sofia, they readily accepted their new roommate. The new accommodation has a many interesting features. Hammocks, rings, walkways and a whole bunch of toys. We will be monitoring her over the coming days, just to be sure she settles in and is happy in her new surroundings.
Our picture of Toula was taken late afternoon, when she was trying out the hammock.

Cosito takes up residence.

When a very young monkey comes to us we take on a big responsibility. Care has to extend to 24hours a day and that means 24 hours personal contact. We try to plan ahead so that finally the baby will end up in one of the occupied enclosures. So that he can share in the life of a group. Cosito has been a big problem in as much as he cries a great deal, especially when he realizes that he is being left alone. His crying is very loud and throaty. Usually directly into the ear. It is a very loud and ugly sound. It prevents thought absolutely. He is very determined person and uses his audio to get his own way. He likes to sleep in a particular place on the shoulder and if that is not made available, he bellows until he gets where he wants to be. Truly he is the first baby I have nursed who has behaved in this way. I have theorized that his capture was very traumatic.  Having lost one family he has no intention of losing another. Otherwise he is a healthy active monkey. When he is feeling secure he plays and is very lovable and cute. In particular he likes the mirror at the head of my bed. The monkey on the other side of the mirror is always there and ready for games. I planned that he would at first be in the care of Roquacita. She has already indicated that she would like to adopt him. Adoption by an adult female is often a great way to bring up  a baby monkey. Marco is an example of this fostering. He was fostered by Sussy, and has grown to be one of the most stable Howler monkeys. He is married to Emma and lives now with Gabriela.
Our plan to unite Cosito with Roquacita has been put temporarily on hold. Cosito has not yet accepted her as a friend. He varies in his attitude towards her. Sometimes aggressive and sometimes loving. Another problem has been that he is not yet wean off the baby bottle. He does not always like to eat or drink from a bowl. Although he is getting better at this. Feeding is an important matter and until we have taught him to feed himself, we cannot give him to Roquacita.
In the meantime, he spends most of his day and night with me.

The Lunes, 27 de diciembre 2010

A veces agresivo y amoroso a veces.
This is a great place with swings and rings to play on as well as extensive walkways. All at a low level just in case he falls. It adjoins Roquacita's garden so he has a good chance to interact with her . He is difficult and challenging but don't forget, these are very early days and all the signs are that he is intelligent and leaning and will succeed.

Merry Christmas to all our readers.

Among all the excitement. The parties and the gifts, it is easy to forget the reason for our celebration. A child was born in very humble circumstances. He is the son of God. He came to suffer death upon the cross to save us from sin. This is a cause of great celebration. Give a thought, in a quiet moment, to this wonderful event.

Remember the children of Canaote this Christmas.

Another Christmas day is nearly here. Whilst our children will not be eating turkey and mince pies, you can be sure that they will eat well. Unfortunately the season badly affects our donor’s generosity, with so many friends and family to take care of, the little people of Cañaote are fairly low on the gift list. This month is a record low for donations.
Our monkeys are fed and cared for 365 days a year. They need their enclosures cleaning every day. They need frequent changes of pillows and blankets and in the rainy season they need fresh dry covers in their houses. This is not just at Christmas.
All this is done with love. We spend quality time with all our children every day.
We know that many of you really care for the work we do here and appreciate that it all costs money. In these times the financial burden has grown out of all proportion and we are finding it increasingly difficult to manage. Please spare a thought this Christmas for the Children of Cañaote.

Barnaby, growing quickly to adulthood.

In the many  years that I have been caring for monkeys, I have never cease to wonder at how quickly they grow to adulthood. Our pictures show baby Barnaby in the lower picture. This was taken during a visit by his human family in  February 2009. Not quite a year ago. The upper picture was taken just a few days ago. Another wonder is how their personality  develops. Barnaby is a very active monkey. I would call him boisterous.  He always wants to interact with anyone who enters his enclosure. This ranges from jumping on you from the swing, suddenly whilst you least expect it, or stealing your hat or camera case. He does bite though not seriously. This behavior is often interpreted as aggressive but is no such thing. He is just playing. He gets on well with his companions. In particular Maria Teresa with whom he plays racing games. She is every bit as athletic as Barnaby, As for his relationship with the other two boys, Tutti and Saco, I would say he respects that they are smaller monkeys even though they are both older. He plays his vigorous games with his equal, Maria Teresa. He is a charming person and when he has exhausted himself he is not averse to sitting across my lap asking for a cuddle.

Jane and Sofia get a family visit.

Meriann and Rudy traveled together from Caracas today. They must have made an early start because they were able to spend most of the day with the monkeys at Canaote. It was a hard working day. They decided to give the enclosure of Jane and Sofia a major spring clean. Jane is Meriann's child and Sofia is Rudy's.
They brought with them a new house which you can see in the picture. Rudy is on the left holding the house in the bottom picture. In addition to the house they brought with them many food gifts for the children. Top picture is Rudy holding Sofia. We tried to get Jane in the picture but she was playing hard to get.

Lucio.

If you are tempted to buy that cute little ball of red fur on sale at the roadside. Just check who you will be sharing your living-room with in just a few years. Lucio is very much an alpha. As you see from our photograph, he is in magnificent condition with a wonderful sheen on his coat. He is aloof to strangers and can be aggressive. He came to Canaote some five years ago as a small young monkey. Nothing like his present size. He is very much loved by his human family, who still visit him and send him gifts. Additionally they are in frequent correspondence with me to be sure that he has everything he needs. I find him to be a good companion we are great friends.

Lucio.

Cosito in the looking glass.

There are those magic moments with babies, whether they are human, kittens, puppies or monkeys, when you find yourself lucky if you have managed to capture it. For me this picture of baby Cosito whilst he was playing with his image in the mirror,  is such a moment.

Weight for it Cosito.

Cosito came to us just 6 weeks ago from his rescuers in Tinaco. Then he weighed only 500 grams. He is a baby being fed only on milk with a bottle with a little lite fruit such as papaya.
Today he tipped the scales at a surprising 850 grams.
He is already quite a character. Very determined. Very demanding. Very brave. He challenges all the dogs by pulling their tails and jumping on their backs. He knows no fear. Roquacita would love to mother him. Were it not for the problem of feeding we would allow him to play with her. As it is they spend some time together but on the other side of her enclosure. Once she has him in her arms it is doubtful that she would let him go. She is a big monkey and I don't feel inclined to try and take him away from her for feeding.Several people have asked about his progress. He is getting bigger by the day

Please put a penny in the old mans hat.

You have seen this hat before and you know what it signifies. Canaote is asking for donations. This has been a very difficult month here at Canaote. Donations are at an all time low. We depend on these collaborations. Next month promises to be even worse.
If you have promised help for your baby please keep your promise. This is the only way we can support the number of monkeys that we have.. Already we are considering returning several monkeys to their owners. If you do not have a monkey here but would like to help then please let me know on philip.cordrey@gmail,com.
I would not ask if I could fund this alone. This is not a business. We have loads of love for our children but not a lot of money. Please help.

Please put a penny in the old mans hat.
If you don't have a penny a halfpenny will do.
If you don't have a halfpenny then God bless you!

Teodoro and Sofia at Pozo Suruapo.

Our first picture shows Teodoro, the big one and Sofia his little surrogate sister. They live at Pozo Suruapo, which is at San Jose de los Altos in the mountains near Caracas. We have told their story previously on the blog but is good to see how well they have got used to each other. Natacha and German, the owners of the Pozo have built a wonderful enclosure for the two friends which overlook the mountains but is completely safe for the monkeys. Teodoro and Sofia play together all day with the beautiful backdrop of the mountains. I have stayed at the Pozo Suruapo and sampled their hospitality. A great place for a short break, a wedding or a place to get away from it all.
Teodoro really loves his new sister and really cares for her.
Our second picture shows the mountains around the Pozo.

We are grateful to Natacha and German for the picture of Teodoro and Sofia.

Our last picture give you an idea of how snuggly Pozo Suruapo fits in the mountainous region.

Yo me he quedado en Pozo Suruapo y he probado su hospitalidad.

Lucio Monito and Jaco from left to right.

My photograph today shows Lucio, Monito and Jaco from left to right. They are all young adults.

The sermon today as always. All monkey start small and grow bigger, a lot bigger. All monkeys bite, it is in their nature.

Cosito settles in his new home.

Cosito our new rescue is getting used to his new environment. Even though he is only 3 months old he is enjoying the company of other howler monkeys here at Canaote. Some of our adult females want to mother him but it is too soon for him to mix with the ladies. He makes typing difficult because he is on my shoulder 24/7.

Lucio gets a family visit.

Last Sunday Gilda and family visited their son Lucio. Lucio is an alpha howler who has been with us since he was very young. His human family visit him often and always with many gifts for the all the children. He shares his enclosure with Moñito a somewhat younger alpha and Jaco and young female.
Lucio has a reputation for being aggressive and the staff treat him with utmost caution. In fact they will not enter his domain without having a water hose to hand.
It is true that he can appear threatening. But really he is quite friendly. Just like dogs, if you appear frightened he will sense that and try to take advantage. I have no difficulty with him or any of the children for that matter. I go back a long way with him and he acknowledges our friendship.
It was the same with Gilda on Sunday. He recognised her at once and wanted to be near her. He was somewhat coy at first but soon remembered her as his human mother.
This is a difficult time in a relationship with a monkey, when the little ball of red fur changes into a large possibly threatening monkey.  The amazing thing is that you can still see that young face in there among the adult beard.
Gilda’s visit was very welcome. I think she was prepared to be frightened of this new adult Lucio and was surprised to find the adult Lucio was as charming as his baby self.

Our picture shows a happy Gilda and in the background you may be able to see Moñito and Lucio.

World Animal Day.

Happy World Animal Day to everyone! Today is for animals everywhere and for people everywhere to do something nice for those animals. So do something special for your pet or make a donation to your favorite animal group. Let those animals know how important they are to you!

World Animal Day is October 4th.  The day celebrates all animals, no matter what kind, where they are, what they do.
Many churches do a Blessing of the Animals on October 3rd, or the Sunday closest to the 04  October during that year.  There are different ways of celebrating all over the world.
October 4th was orginally chosen because it is the feast day of Francis of Assisi, who is recognized as the patron saint of animals, but is celebrated by people of all beliefs, religions, and opinions.

Cosito arrives to stay.

Yesterday afternoon Cosito arrived at ARFA Canaote with his human family. They had discovered him crawling in a Tinaco street. They rescued him but soon decided that a baby monkey was not a good pet. After all as a baby he needs 24 hour attention. No less than a humLunes,
Domingo, 03 de octubre de 2010, an child. The family asked me if Cosito could join the Canaote monkeys. We accepted him. He has bawled all night, trying to make monkey sense of his new environment. Early this morning, he drank plenty of milk and now is fast asleep. Bawl all night and sleep first thing in the morning. How typical of a human child.

Barnaby on the ball.

When Barnaby arrived at Canaote, he was short of one ball. This is a similar condition found in some humans. If it does not descend it can indicate a future problem with inferiility. Usually it solves itself during the first year. The good news is that Barnaby's testicle has descended as you can see from the photograph.

Outreach meets Cosito.

Recently we were told by one of our staff, that there was a new monkey with a family in Tinaco. We arranged to visit and we were given a warm welcome. Cosito is about four months old. A very bright and active young man, The family say that they found him walking the streets near the new government Mecal shopping center. We gave the family advice on feeding and living condition. Above all the baby needs warmth at night. I have a feeling that the family will soon bring him to Canaote.

Little monkeys should never be put up for sale. Taking them from their mothers at such an early age, robs them of the important contact between mother and child. This is particularly wrong because the baby is so young. We will do our best to make his life a happy one.

Ramona September 2010 Visit.

Regular users of this blog will know that Canaote Rescue Center has an outreach arm. That is to say that we visit monkeys that are housed in the community. These are all in homes where we know that the owners love and care for their monkeys. We offer advice on housing and feeding and love visiting these children, Ramona is visited fairly often and she recognizes our car and becomes quite exited. She knows that we always bring a gift of leaves freshly taken from the forest especially for her. This time we took Chinese long beans which we know she likes. Over the years she has changed her residence, Formerly she was housed during the day in a tree in the street. There was a incident with a passerby and the owner sort  a new home for her, Fortunately there was a tree nearby behind the house, This has proved to be a safe home during the day. She has a chain which is secured to her with a soft belt. She has learned to handle the chain without it becoming tangled. Today the owner told me that they are planing a big cage for her. She would be happier without the chain I am sure, She is well fed and in excellent health. I really enjoy visiting her.

Visita a Ramona Septiembre 2010.

Questions and answers.

Our last post evoked many questions about the life of our Howler monkeys. So this post is a more generalized view which should answer most of those questions.

Alouatta seniculus
(red howler monkey)
Alouatta seniculus have the widest geographical distribution of all the New World primates. Red howler monkeys range throughout the northern half of South America, from Colombia to Bolivia.
Physical Description
Alouatta seniculus are slightly sexually dimorphic. Females have a body length of 46-57 centimeters; males, which are larger, have a body length of 49-72 cm. Both sexes have a long, prehensile tail of approximately 49-75 cm. The coat color of males and females is a deep reddish-brown, although the shade varies slightly with age. Red howlers have a large neck with tremendous lower jaw and hyroid bones, giving them a forbidding expression.

Reproduction
Due to such an unbalanced sex ratio, fierce sexual competition exists between and within red howler troops. Red howler males, which are expelled from their natal troop upon reaching sexual maturity, are forced to invade an outside group and gain admittance. Once they have accomplished this, they violently kill any infants present in the group. By killing infants in a newly invaded troop, a male can mate quickly and ensure that the new offspring of the group are his own. Mothers do try to protect their offspring against assaulting males. Unfortunately for the female, this is not particularly successful; less than 25% of offspring survive a male howler invasion.
The mating behavior of red howlers is another interesting aspect of their social interactions. Males and females often form consortships, an unusually close spatial relationship, before any sexual exchange has begun. Once these associations are established, sexual solicitations begin. Although seductive behaviors can be performed by both sexes, the female most often takes on the aggressive role. When attempting to attract a male, the female approaches him and moves her torque rhythmically. The male may respond the same way, but if he does not, the female may simply try to entice another male.
Alouatta seniculus appears to breed throughout the year. However, in two habitats in Venezuela, the birth frequency is reduced during the early wet season, May through July. The estrous cycle ranges from 16-20 days, with the female being receptive for 2-4 days. Red howler females give birth for the first time around 5 years of age, while males usually do not father an offspring until approximately 7 years. Therefore, a female reaches sexual maturity a couple of years before a male.

Newborn A. seniculus are at first quite helpless and are carried around at the mother's belly. Young red howlers begin using their prehensile tails before they are one month old. An infant uses its tail to secure itself to its mother, for in this stage of its life the mother pays little or no attention to her offspring, and fails to give the baby any assistance!
Parental investment:
pre-fertilization (provisioning, protecting: female); pre-hatching/birth (provisioning: female, protecting: female); pre-weaning/fledging (provisioning: female); extended period of juvenile learning.
Behavior
Red howler monkeys live in relatively large social groups, consisting of approximately 10 individuals, with only one or perhaps two of the individuals being males. Alouatta seniculus exhibit many interesting behaviors. They are most famous for their "dawn chorus", a deafening roar that can be heard up to 5 kilometers away! These resonating howls, performed primarily by the males of a group, are answered by all other howler troops within ear shot. This way, one troop can constantly inform another of its precise location, thus avoiding an energetically costly squabble over resources.
During parturition, a newborn usually becomes the focus of attention of several other females. Typically, it is females without infants of their own that are attracted to these infants. In these instances, the females are extremely gentle with the little ones, touching them with their muzzles and hands. They may even occasionally encourage the infant to crawl on them. Males also are known to tolerate the activities of infant howlers in their troop. Similar to the adult females, the male red howlers also allow the infants to climb all over them. This of course takes place long after the male has killed all offspring that are not his own.
Food Habits
Alouatta seniculus are primarily folivorous. Leaves are low in nutrients and sugars in comparison with other food choices, and red howler monkeys have two large sections in their hindgut which contain the bacteria needed to digest the cellulose in leaves. This change in anatomy results in a large gut that occupies one-third of their total body volume. In addition, their extremely deep lower jaw bones aid red howlers in chewing. Alouatta seniculus also improve their digestive efficiency by feeding primarily on tender young leaves and on some species of leaves that are unusually nutritious. In addition, they eat sugary fruits and flowers when these are available, but can sustain themselves for weeks at a time on only leaves, providing these are high in quality. Alouatta seniculus spend almost their entire lives near the top canopy of the forest, where such leaves are most abundant .
Economic Importance for Humans: Positive
Due to their relatively large size, A. seniculus, along with other howler species, are hunted for food and are subject to commercial export.
Conservation Status
Although several other Alouatta species are endangered, A. seniculus has no special conservation status. However, red howlers have become rarer in some areas, most likely due to the destruction of their habitat. Fortunately, they are still abundant in Brazil.
Other Comments
Red howlers have an amusing reaction to rainy days during the tropical wet season. In response to heavy rains, they howl, either at the onset, or often at the sound of approaching rain, and sit hunched over until the rain ends!
Red howler monkeys have overcome problems that are usually associated with having leaves as a principle food source, including their specialized jaw and stomach structures. Behaviorally, they (along with the other species in their genus) are unique in that they have developed the loudest vocalization of any animal in the New World. These adaptations have aided them in becoming an extremely successful primate--and yet they are still able to sleep for more than 15 hours a day!

Preguntas y respuestas.
