Food that is no longer available as well as food we can no longer afford. We were aware of the growing crisis and took steps, months ago to protect the monkey food supply. Our first step was to plant a field with lechosa
This has given us a strong backbone to our monkey meals. It also filled in the gap between the early months of the year and the beginning of the mango season. Lechosa combined with some bought in vegetables. Added to which great helpings of fresh leaves from our forest. Those of you who know Cañaote will know that we are situated in a fairly remote area, right on the edge of deep mountain forest. Plenty of natural food but it has to be collected. The great number of healthy wild monkeys proves that the forest has everything we need.
The mango season started just as the lechosa field was getting a little thin, although there will be much more later in the year.
Mangoes we have in profusion. We have so many that they lay thick on the ground. In former years they would rot and go to waste. This year, spurred on by our shortages, we have taken large quantities and put them through a drying process. This was an experiment. Would the re-hydrated fruit still be acceptable to the monkeys? I can tell you that is has been a great success. The monkeys love the re-hydrate mangoes. We undertook this experiment on a grand scale and now have sufficient to last until the phase two mango season. Phase two? Cañaote is fortunate to have many different cultivars of mango. They do not all ripen at the same time. As practical consideration, we need a couple of days to collect, prepare and dry the mangoes in our equipment. Would the re hydrating need extra labour? Answer no. Just one hour in a large bowl with warm water and it is ready to serve.

This shortage has been, in some ways, beneficial inasmuch as it made us think about the monkeys diet, rather than continue with what was largely bought in. Their diet is now more derived from the forest and what we are able to grow for them. Even though it uses some modern food technology. Crisis makes you think outside the box. Our monkeys are still well fed and healthy in spite of the human suffering that surrounds us. Our photograph shows a bowl of hydrating mango slices and a packet of dried mango taken from
This chap is a regular visitor Usually alone and always in the late afternoon. We are not sure but we suspect his name is Eric. A male monkey who released himself some years ago. This would explain why he sits above the enclosure of Nineta and Cosito. He is completely quiet. He seems to be happy just to sit there and watch the other children. If it is Eric, he arrived at about the same time as Lorenzo and Nineta. His face is very familiar. No they don´t all look alike. They are just as different as you and me.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22473468.post-40987547206300467312016-02-11T13:28:00.002-08:002016-02-11T13:28:20.820-08:00Last Evening as the sun was going down.

It is bad fortune that leads a wild animal into Captive care.
When an animal is sick or infirm it is unavoidable
When an animal has lost the savage skills because of long term internment with humans, again captive care is a possible temporary option.
For others freedom is lost.
I have created swings, rings, walkways, roundabouts, miniature big dippers. and several types of rides for the children in my care. Every enclosure has a variety of these toys and they are rotated.
I have long realised that captive creatures need activity.
The alternative is depression, which is a killer.
You book on enrichment is inspiring. It gave me a new impetus to create diversions and enrichments.
God bless you on your birthday.

I want to tell you a story about a miracle that happened this morning. It is very rare for a howler monkey to fall out of a tree. But it happened this morning, just by my kitchen door. One of the older mango trees stands there. Through age, some of the upper branches are rotten and, in this heavy rainy season, are falling to earth. It happened that a young Araguato female was on a heavy branch when it broke. The monkey fell some thirty meters but first striking a branch halfway down. At that moment I was in the kitchen and went out to discover the cause of the noise.
There on the ground and quite still was the monkey I quickly examined her for broken bones and found no injury. This was a miracle. To fall that great height and still be in one piece. The monkey began to move. Obviously confused. I picked her up and took her to one of our enclosures. I released her. The enclosure is very large and she was already climbing high and fast. My intention was to observe her for a short time before returning her to the wild. But really my concern was wasted. She was fine. Now the problem was to catch her and take her to the door. All this time she was calling. Sud
denly the trees above the enclosure were alive with araguatos. First a very large female landed on top of the enclosure, put her arms through the wire and cuddled the little girl. As if to say there there mummy is here. Then papa arrived with the rest of the family. I counted eighteen monkeys. This was the whole family. Now getting her out of the enclosure was no easy matter. Me atop a ladder, not something elderly gentlemen should do. I caught her and took her to the gate releasing her at the same time. She shot away. Mother took her in both arms and then together they departed, together with her big family.
Anyone who tells you that howler monkeys lack empathy should take note. No mother could top the concern and devotion that this mother showed.

This is the first time in eighteen years of associating with howler monkeys that I have observed a monkey fall from a tree without human cause.
Her survival can only be regarded as a miracle. I was humbled by the the love and devotion that this mother showed her child.
The troop showed no fear of me They proved to me yet again that they regard Cañaote as a safe haven. My picture, the little girl probably about six months, in the arms of a helper.

Early every morning, the wild ones sit in the trees above Cañaote. They eat the fruit and leaves, Mangos and Mamon. The ground is covered with the shells of the Mamon. They are also in grand voice. They join with the monkeys of Cañaote in a great chorus, which can be heard for many miles around us. They come in big families as they have done for many years. They know that Cañaote is a safe haven and a refuge. Our photographs today were shot this morning. These little ladies are very intersted in some of our males. They are in the trees above Cosito, Daniel and the young ones, Katty, Mimo and Saco.

Canaote is situated deep in Cojedes monkey country. Every day the canopy above our compound shakes with the activity of monkeys. Most days it is large families of Araguato that are in great thunderous chorus above us. Sometimes the chirp of more than twenty Capuchins can also be heard late in the afternoon. Why do they all congregate at Canaote? There is a reason. To the East men have destroyed trees, their home. They come this way because we have an abundance of fruit trees, planted for them over seventeen years and because they have learned that we are a safe haven. No one dare molest monkeys or cut down trees where we stand guard. Monkey and other wildlife traders beware. Our picture, typical of every morning, shows a family group, and of course there are many of them.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22473468.post-13127745232997343472015-04-17T18:40:00.001-07:002015-04-17T18:40:12.956-07:00Mango season at Canaote.

It´s mango season at Cañaote. Whilst we see wild monkeys every day of the year in the canopy above our facility. It is in mango season that the visitors come in large numbers- We see whole families sitting together Males with several females and their children- The children are particularly fascinating to watch. They play so hard at great height, I wonder that there is never an accident. They have the built in safety techniques that that any steeple jack would envy.
Watching them play, free in the forest, reminds me of the less fortunate who have been captured by man an now sit in tiny cages in someone's apartment. Pampered like a small child?. Nah! Baby bottle instead of mother, Nappies instead of the wind around their legs. Shame on man.
My picture is a wild male adult. A frequent visitor and a connoisseur of our mangoes.

Two days ago, on Facebook, I asked if anyone could guess what was being made from a scatter of iron pieces in my photograph. Today I am able to show you the nearly finished article. It´s a roundabout. Just put into place a few minutes before the picture. Subsequently the Lucio family went wild. I had a feeling that this was their kind of toy. They are
of course experimenting with it. Soon I will share with you some of the early games. We are constantly looking for ways to enrich the lives of the little people that live with us. Boredom is the greatest enemy of the monkey in semi captivity. Whilst we prepare some of our monkeys for return to their natural environment, we give them plenty to do. Depression is the enemy of the bored monkey. It´s the reason zoos often fail to give monkeys a healthy life. Ok, not all zoos fail.

A Monkey Rescue Centre has to be many things. It must be prepared to serve many purposes- The welfare of the children is paramount of course. But what is the welfare of the children? It cannot be just a glib expression. Where possible and very important, is the preparation of a monkey to be returned to its natural environment, the forest. Maybe there are many steps to be taken before this objective can be achieved. The age and health of the monkey are considerations. Is the monkey capable of defending and supporting itself in the wild. If not what steps must be taken to bring it to the point where it can be released. Health must be professionally monitored. Appropriate medication prescribed and applied. Monkeys from human homes sometimes have problems that the were induced by.their association with humans. Small, physically inhibiting cages, inappropriate diet, these are some of the human gifts. At Cañaote we have seen too many monkeys with osteoporosis, caused by poor diet and lack of proper exercise. So preparation for release is an important work of the Centre but what else? Some of these programs take long periods, sometimes years. Clearly the health and well-being of the child must be taken care of during this period. Mental heath is as important as the physical condition. Boredom is the monkeys biggest enemy in captivity. In the trees above Cañaote we see the wild ones, constantly at play, constantly in activity. Their games and their feeding make happy wild lives. But what of the children behind cages? There are many studies of enrichment activities for captive or semi captive monkeys, I will quote one excellent study and leave those interested to follow up. The Rescue Centre must not only provide a suitable appropriate and nutritious diet but also provide activities to occupy and entertain the captive monkey. We are constantly providing and maintaining enrichment for our children. Above you can see a new house that went into use today. Swings do not replace trees but they do help. We also include live trees in our enclosures. Bamboo walkways, rings, ropes, hammocks. Not to forget the buckets of love.

This evening and the sun very low in the sky above Cañaote.. Two young ladies are preparing to go home. It has been a long day. The mangoes have been good and the company charming. So just to end a perfect day, a song for you.
Lucio.

If you are tempted to buy that cute little ball of red fur on sale at the roadside. Just check who you will be sharing your living-room with in just a few years. Lucio is very much an alpha. As you see from our photograph, he is in magnificent condition with a wonderful sheen on his coat. He is aloof to strangers and can be aggressive. He came to Canaote some10 years ago as a small young monkey. Nothing like his present size. He is very much loved by his human family, who still visit him and send him gifts. Additionally they are in frequent correspondence with me to be sure that he has everything he needs. I find him to be a good companion we are great friends.

She is wild and she is beautiful. She sits for many hours over the enclosure where Lucio lives with his family. The wild visitors are with us every day but from the beginning of the Mango season, their numbers increase dramatically. Early morning the trees in the canopy shake with the thunder of their calls.
Its only one reason why we call Cañaote Paradise.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22473468.post-89800258352073264652014-12-25T15:17:00.001-08:002014-12-26T05:04:24.694-08:00Did you notice?

I wonder if you noticed? The PayPal button has been removed.. Yes it was getting rusty for non use. So I thought it best to remove it. In the 8 years of its presence on the blog, it has never been used. Not many PayPal donations through Forget me not. In fact none at all. Sad.

We
have twenty four monkeys in our care that is nineteen Howler monkeys
and five Capuchin monkeys. All of our children with one exception
come from human homes. Homes that are now peaceful, homes where the
tops stay on top of spray cans and where the human children are no
longer in danger of being bitten. The fact is that baby monkeys are
just like baby kittens and baby puppies. They are irresistible, they
are cuddly, and they are lovable. But it is when they grow up that
they cause problems either within the family or community. All
monkeys bite. So a time comes when for one reason or another, a
parting has to be made.
This is a traumatic time for the monkey, a
painful time for the owner and human family. Depending on the type of
monkey, they can live anything between twenty and forty years.
Therefore adopting a monkey is a serious matter. Disposing of a
monkey is an even more serious matter. Having committed yourself to
the care of a human-like creature and then reneging on your promise
to care for him for his whole life, is an event which has serious
implications.
There is only one refuge for monkeys in Venezuela
and so there are those who, having found the Canaote Monkey Rescue
Centre, breathe a sigh of relief. 'I
have found someone to look after the monkey and I can now get on with
my life'. The
fact of the matter is that there is a moral responsibility to
continue to care and be concerned with the welfare of the monkey.
There is no moral quick fix. You caused that baby’s mother to be
murdered. You bought him at the roadside and you are still morally
responsible for him.
Some people make a promise of continuing
donations to support their child here at Cañaote. Very few people
keep that promise. For example this month, only one person has made a
donation out of the twenty four monkeys we have resident. For the
rest, we have to consider them abandoned.
Our financial resources
at Cañaote are very slight. It is entirely the contribution from my
pension from the Government of the United Kingdom. There is no other
source of funds. That pension has remained unchanged for the last
fifteen years with no increment. Many people express surprise
that we are not supported by government grant. We have no financial
support for our work.
If you truly loved the monkey you passed to
my care or you wish to help the Monkeys of Cañaote, please donate
and donate regularly. Don’t make me beg.
You have no doubt about
my love for these children.

¿Te diste cuenta?

Me pregunto si te diste cuenta?

No me hagas rogar.
Nineta´s new baby. We can´t intrude to discover the sex just yet. We have to wait until Nineta is ready to show us. Nineta is a very fine mother and she holds baby carefully in her arms. Baby is very fast as you see from the picture. Many hours waiting for that shot. This picture day two. And baby is big and strong. I will write Nineta´s story soon. It is full of tragedy and triumph.

On December the 4th 2001 in the canopy high above the forest floor, in a forest somewhere in north-western Venezuela, a female howler monkey was born. She had no name because it is not the way of Howler monkeys to give each other names. She lived with her mother and her family for three short months, then boys entered the forest and shot her mother. She was kidnapped and soon she was being offered for sale at the roadside. This tragedy went unnoticed by the world; no one investigated her mother’s murder. No one wondered what had become of the little Howler monkey.
A young woman happened to be travelling along a certain road and saw a monkey being offered for sale. The boys said it was a male. But like most uninformed people, they could not really tell the difference. The female Howler has external genitals that resemble the male parts but actually are easily distinguishable. The young woman had long had the romantic idea of having a monkey as a pet. After a short negotiation she left with the little red ball of fur in a black woollen bag. She took her new pet to her apartment in Valencia. Then for one year and nine months the monkey never saw the sky, never felt rain on her face, never saw another animal, never climbed a tree. She was not unhappy. Her owner was kind and she was well fed and loved. She was also given a name. ‘Mona’, which is the Spanish word for a female monkey. Just like calling your dog ‘Dog’. Mona was of course bored. Long hours left alone in the flat whilst her owner went out to work. One day the door was left open and Mona slipped outside to investigate. She climbed a wall into the garden of an adjoining building. She was soon spotted by children playing there. There was a great hullabaloo and the parents came out to find the cause. In due course a complaint arrived with a demand that this dangerous wild animal be removed from the apartment.
The poor distraught owner had no idea what she could do with Mona. She remembered friends in Cojedes that had wild monkeys living around their farm. She decided to call them to see if Mona could be found a new home.
She was lucky and Mona was duly transferred to her new home.
For the first time in her life she climbed trees and felt the wind and rain upon her face. She felt the warm sun and rolled over in the dirt with sheer joy. Even after three years in her new home she never ventured far from the house and only climbed the lower branches of the trees in the forest around the house. Her new guardians decided that something had to be done about her name. Henceforth she was to be known as MonaLisa, being a much more appropriate name for a very beautiful young lady. It is not by any means sure that Howler monkeys recognize the concept of name. A dog responds when it is called by its owner, usually by wagging its tale. I have never notice any response when a Howler is called by a name. But there, that may be just an indication of their very independent nature. Even though I have noticed a lot of non-monkey behaviour amongst Howlers in semi captivity. I can say that I have never managed to teach a Howler anything. MonaLisa for example cleans her teeth with a tooth brush after paste has been applied. (Colgate take note). She is most insistent on doing this at the same time as me. She copies me but I did not teach her to do this. She goes to the toilet in the bathroom. But again she has not been taught to do this. It’s a fact that Howlers in the forest always select a tree above a stream or river for defecation. And the loo is the nearest thing in our household to a stream.
She has a favourite blanket like many human children. She seeks this during heavy rain or thunderstorms or anything which she finds frightening. It’s very comical to see a head moving about under a blanket in the middle of the living room.
She sleeps at night huddled up in David’s bed, heads on the pillows and under the clothes of course.
Sadly, MonaLisa's former owner has never been in touch. Not once has she phoned or mailed to enquire how MonaLisa is fairing in her new home. Just another problem less. Thats not how we see MonaLisa, she is the light of my every day.

You can easily imagine the type of work that goes on in a rescue centre, Most of it is practical stuff, clean enclosures, buy, prepare food, wash dishes, visit all the children to give them quality time. Watch out for the monkey who is not behaving normally. Arrange veterinary visits, Attend to legal requirements, documentation required by ministry of Environment. This last need is a very time consuming task. There is another side to this work that is not so obvious but nevertheless very demanding. This is attention to the former owners. The former owner can be tearful and grieving, easily as emotionally draining as a lost human child. This kind of client will need nursing maybe for an extended period but like all grieving it will finally resolve. In the meantime, reassuring letters, frequent photographs all to re ensure that the monkeys is well and happy. Above all to reinforce the notion that the client has done the right thing in bringing the monkey to a centre where hopefully it will finally be release into the wild or at least have the company of fellow creatures in an suitable environment. Not all monkeys come to us willingly, occasionally the authorities confiscate a monkey from an individual. Monkeys like most wildlife are protected by laws and cannot be owned by an individual as a pet. This is a always difficult situation, sometimes the monkey is taken from someone who is selling the animal but also monkeys are confiscated from homes even though they have lived with humans for some years. This kind of monkey presents additional problems for us. How do you replicate a home environment. The answer is that you can´t but we can give extra love and support whilst the monkey acclimatises to its new situation. In particular by being sure that the newcomer has compatible friends and neighbours in its vicinity. Monkeys have surprising resilience if allowed to change with lots of tender loving care. But equally in its absence are subject to depression every bit as profound as with humans. We often hear of this fate with monkeys that are offloaded to zoos. That has to be a real no no.
Rescate
