I hate to beg but for the children I sink my pride.

No doubt, Christmas is an expensive time for everyone and this year with inflation running at an all time high, the situation is worse. At Cañaote the situation is particularly difficult. The increase in the annual payments to staff and the inflated price of the monkeys food and critically, the loss of our car to bandits at gunpoint, has left me worrying about how to get through the month. This month we have accepted two more monkeys and have received several more requests for a home. Never in the 17 years that I have worked with unwanted or abused monkeys has my work been more needed.

My finances are very slender. I only have my small British pension and this has not increased in  all the time I have been here.
Please if you can, make a donation this Christmas. I would not ask if we did not need it. I hate to beg but for the children I sink my pride.

I wish you all a peaceful and safe Christmas.
We of course will be with the children. As always caring for their happiness and welbeing.

Kindest regards Philip Cordrey.

Philip Cordrey.

There was an old woman who lived in a shoe.

There was an old woman who lived in a shoe,
She had so many children, and loved them all, too.
She said, "Thank you Lord Jesus, for sending them bread."
Then kissed them all gladly and sent them to bed.

Front Daniel. Behind him Samantha. The little person to the right is Katty.
This is all part of their 'go to bed', routine. They are all too young to sleep in the enclosure, so they sleep in my quarters until they are old enough.
To begin with, having had an exhausting day playing, they catch a nap in the box that you see. This reminded me so much of the nursery rhyme that I couldn't resist quoting a version of
it for you.

Later when I return, they have supper and then settle down for the night. Revallie is at 5.30. That's when they all move out into their day time domain.

Saving the children of the rain forest.

The environmental news around the world is not encouraging which lead me to make this short video. Yes, you do need reminding. The battle to save the planet for future generations has hardly been joined. The great issues, the Rain Forrest, Greenhouse Gasses, remain unsolved. A lot of talk the talk but no walk the walk.

Saving the children of the rain forest.

At Canaote Monkey Rescue Center, I believe we are in the front line in the fight to save the Rain Forrest. but what does that mean? Why save it. Why not cut down those useless trees that bar the way to glorious roads that could connect the cities of the continents. So that we can make more cars and make way for more bio fuel farming  to feed these guzzlers. Clear away all that untidy green stuff and plant useful things like corn for fuel.

Our answer is short and simple. No trees  no oxygen.

The final link you may think is self serving. We save monkeys who have been deprived of their homes and their families killed. We provide a safe, clean environment for them to live their lives in dignity. We provide them with wholesome food and veterinary care. We lecture at local schools and Universities. I think our work is important. So much so that I have devoted my life to this cause.

Our ability to do this well has been disrupted by our vehicle being stolen at gun point by bandits. All our personal funds are devoted to the monkeys in our care. For that reason we are appealing to everyone who is concerned with the well being of these children, to donate something. Check the link below.
If you are in Venezuela you might like to donate directly to me in local currency. But check the link. It is important.
Please put a penny in the old mans hat.
If you haven't got a penny a half penny will do.
If you haven't got a half penny. God Bless you.

Appeal for funds to replace Canaote's van.

Katty making a good start

There is a special time in every parents experience that is unforgettable. First word, first step, first birthday. My picture show such a moment in the life of Katty a small red monkey. I think the picture needs a little more explanation. When a new young monkey arrives at Canaote we have to think carefully about the environment we select for him/her. When they are very small, for example Samantha, Daniel and Katty, they will spend the first months of their lives here, with me 24/7, in my quarters and on my shoulder.. Gradually over a period of time we test various environments for them. Sometimes they will join an existing group. Maria Teresa for example joined MonaLisa  and Kirin. On other occasions they may form a group of their own. Much depends on the attitude of the existing monkeys in the enclosure and of course the type of enclosure available. Just like humans, monkeys have their likes and dislikes. Another important consideration is the hierarchical nature of monkey society. This is not the place for a detailed examination of monkey society but suffice it to say that dominant alpha monkeys will not tolerate the children of another male. Infanticide is common among howler monkeys. So we would not consider placing a young male in an enclosure with an alpha adult.

The period during which the young monkeys are with me, they will sleep and eat in my quarters. As they become competent at feeding themselves and climbing, we take the next step, which is to allow them, during the day, to play in an outside enclosure. That is the situation at this moment with Samantha and Daniel. Early in the morning, I transfer them to a location adjoining my quarters, where they will spend the day. In the evening I will collect them and bring them back to my quarters. This way I can continue to monitor their progress.
The special moment I spoke of at the beginning, refers to Katty making her first move away from my shoulder, to joining the others on the ropes which span my quarters and in the feeding place. This shows a shift in her thinking away from me and to the group.  On this first occasion she soon found her way back to my shoulder but it was a good start lasting at least a hour.

The King of Spain's daughter.

Katty arrived at Canaote in the afternoon, last Saturday. She is a baby of only two months. She is the third small child to be brought to us in just a few months. The scandalous trade in wild life goes on unabated,. When oh When will the authorities act decisively to stop this wicked trade? This poor little mite torn from her mother and the mother assassinated.
Our picture shows her this morning in a small nut tree in front of our compound. She liked it yesterday so here we are again today. It brought to mind the nursery rhyme, 'I had a little nut tree'. Particularly because the original poem told of the visit of King Ferdinand of Spain, with his daughter Katherine or modern nick name 'Katty'. Read on.

So what has it to do with our baby Katty?

I had a little nut tree,
Nothing would it bear
But a silver nutmeg,
And a golden pear;
The King of Spain's daughter
Came to visit me,
And all for the sake
Of my little nut tree.

Her dress was made of crimson,
Jet black was her hair,
She asked me for my nut tree
And my golden pear.
I said, "So fair a princess
Never did I see,
I'll give you all the fruit
From my little nut tree.

The characters in the nursery rhyme 'I had a little nut tree' are believed to refer to the visit of the Royal House of Spain to King Henry VII's English court in 1506. The 'King of Spain's daughter' refers to the daughter of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. There were two daughters, Princess Juana and her sister Katherine of Aragon. The princess in the nursery rhyme is probably Katherine of Aragon who was betrothed to Prince Arthur, the heir to the throne of England. Arthur died and Katherine eventually married King Henry VIII. It was sad that "So fair a princess" had such a difficult life with Henry as she was the first of Henry's six wives and discarded by the King to make way for Anne Boleyn. Queen Katherine was much loved by the British people who hated her replacement, who they called 'The Great Whore'. The young, beautiful princess relates to the young Katherine, as a princess and is immortalised in this old nursery rhyme .

Y una pera de oro;
La hija del rey de España,
Vino a visitarme,

Black Sapote time.

Our picture shows poor Daniel fighting off a crowd of monkeys wanting their share. Even the wild girl Silvia has joined the attack. In the bowl there is a large helping of Black Sapote just collected from our arboretum. From time to time I have shown you various fruits that we have available. This is the second time we have had a large crop of Black Sapote. It seems that each time the harvest is bigger. The monkeys love them. One of the benefits we derive from our botanic garden, is the large number of tropical fruit we have available to augment the children's meals. We are able to make our own significant contribution to the feeding of our children from the garden.

But what does the meat of the fruit look like close up?  Our picture below. Its very dark brown/purple. Sticky with a consistency of shoe polish. A taste out of this world.

Diospyros digyna, the Black Sapote, is a species of persimmon that is native to eastern Mexico and Central America south to Colombia. Other names include Chocolate Pudding Fruit, Chocolate Persimmon and (in Spanish) Zapote

Zapote negro.

Loki the baby howler in the Smithsonian National Zoo is dead.

I was very saddened today to hear that Loki, the baby black howler monkey in The Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, has died.
I am not happy with the way the zoo have  handled this. Firstly for months after the baby was born they declared it was a boy. I pointed out their error and even sent them photographs to prove it. They went into denial. They never admitted their error. Now I hear from a correspondent on the friends of the Zoo page on Facebook that she has died. But no official announcement. Maybe politically to soon after the death of their Panda Cub. They are now in official mourning for the Panda baby. But no word about Loki. Again they have gone into denial.

I really don´t understand why they have Howlers in the zoo. They are not high risk endangered. They are in an entirely inappropriate climate. They admit themselves they have had no luck raising baby howlers for many years. I wonder sometimes if it is just for the benefit of the crowd of vets and trainees. All wandering about with their face masks and rubber gloves. I wonder how she died?

Me pregunto cómo murió?

Water, Water everywhere but not a drop to drink.

My story begins more than 18 years ago, when I bought Canaote. At that time, the water came from an old well nearby the house. I was told by the original owner that he had installed the pump some 20 years before. So that pump had worked daily for 38 years. One day a year ago, the pump ceased to work. Recently we discovered that the weather had finally eaten through the plastic covering of the electric cable and shorted out the pump. In spite of expert attention, it was found impossible to find the spare parts needed to repair the pump. This was a potentially disastrous situation as we depend entirely on that well for our water. Water for ourselves, washing, showering, clothes, and of course the water for the monkeys in our care. The situation became critical when we found that it would cost about 1500 US$ to replace the pump. We simply did not have the money.

We had some help. The Co Op that operates nearby started to fill our tank with river water, using their petrol driven pump. They did this once a day. This provided water for all non potable purposes, showering, washing dishes etc. The local Co Op are good men, and we have had an excellent relationship with them, basically always helping each other where possible.

A neighbour, some ten minutes walk away, has a pure water well. She allowed my staff to visit daily to fill a milk churn with water. At first this was an easy task. The churn was loaded into our car, Ford Bronco, and driven the short distance. This all changed when the car was stolen. Now it was necessary either to shift the churn either by motorbike, one person holding the churn whilst the other drove, or by pushing it to the well using a wheel barrow. Altogether it had become an unpopular but necessary daily chore.

I publicized our plight on Facebook and our Blog. Soon there were many expressions of sympathy but nothing practical. We needed funds to buy the pump, to transport it when it was purchased, then for it to be fitted. An unexpected cost was the ravage of time on the infrastructure. Much of the heavy metal  tubing and most of the electric cable had to be replaced. The rubber tubing in particular, was a big number. Some two hundred meters from the well to the tank on a small adjoining hill had to be renewed.

Finally a few weeks ago the offer came and the pump was purchased. A few days ago the pump arrived here in Canaote. Yesterday the pump was submerged and the first water pulled up from a our deep well. Today, our original water tank was cleaned of the silt that had collected from the river water and pure mountain water once again flowed into Canaote.
The pump  purchased completely by one party. Significant contributions were made by others which paid for the installation and the replacements to the infrastructure.
They have our deep gratitude I have not named them to protect them against unsolicited requests.
I think the pictures speak for themselves. In the one I am admiring the arrival of the pump and in the other I am sampling the water which could not have tasted better had it been Champaign.

St. Francis Prayer for peace.

In Venezuela, late on the 7th of October 2012, we will know which of the presidential candidates has won. Many will be overjoyed at the victory of their man. But many will be saddened and even angry because their favourite has lost. This is a time when Christians should open their hearts to forgive and to seek peace with others.
Here is the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi whose day it is today.

Peace Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi
   Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
     where there is hatred, let me sow love;
     when there is injury, pardon;
     where there is doubt, faith;
     where there is despair, hope;
     where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.
Grant that I may not so much seek
     to be consoled as to console;
to be understood, as to understand,
     to be loved as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

At Franciscan churches, a friar with brown robe and white cord often welcomes each animal with a special prayer on this day. The Blessing of Pets usually goes like this:

“Blessed are you, Lord God, maker of all living creatures. You called forth fish in the sea, birds in the air and animals on the land. You inspired St. Francis to call all of them his brothers and sisters. We ask you to bless this pet. By the power of your love, enable it to live according to your plan. May we always praise you for all your beauty in creation. Blessed are you, Lord our God, in all your creatures! Amen.
As the prayer is offered, the pet is gently sprinkled with holy water.
Some people criticize the amount and cost of care given to pets. People are more important, they say. Care for poor people instead of poodles. And certainly our needy fellow humans should not be neglected.
However, I believe every creature is important. The love we give to a pet, and receive from a pet, can draw us more deeply into the larger circle of life, into the wonder of our common relationship to our Creator.

   Señor, haz de mí un instrumento de tu paz;
     donde haya odio, siembro yo amor;
     cuando haya injuria, perdón;
     donde haya duda, fe;
     donde haya desesperación, esperanza;
     donde hay tinieblas, luz;
     y donde haya tristeza, alegría.
Haz que yo no busque tanto
     ser consolado, sino consolar;
     Debe entenderse, como comprender,
     ser amado como amar;
     porque dando es como recibimos,
     es perdonando que somos perdonados,

Very useful Information

Stop press. It appears that some of this information may not be accurate. please follow this link.

http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/household/cellphones.asp

USEFUL INFORMATION Off topic but important.

FOUR THINGS YOU PROBABLY NEVER
KNEW YOUR MOBILE PHONE COULD DO !!!

There are a few things that can be done in times of grave
emergencies. Your mobile phone can actually
be a life saver or an emergency tool for survival.
Check out the things that you can do  with it:

FIRST
Emergency

The Emergency Number worldwide for all Mobile Phones
is 112. If you find yourself out of  the coverage area of your
mobile network and there is an emergency, dial 112
and your mobile will search any existing network in your area to establish the emergency
number for you, and interestingly this number 112 can be dialled even
if the keypad is locked. This works on all phones worldwide and is free. It is the equivalent of 000.

SECOND
Have you  locked your keys in the car?

Does  your car have remote keyless entry? This may come in handy someday. Good
reason to own a cell phone:
If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at home, call
someone at  home on their mobile phone from your cell phone.

Hold  your cell phone about a foot from
your car door and have the person at your  home press the unlock
button, holding it near the mobile phone on their end.
Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive
your keys to you. Distance is no object. You could be thousands of miles away,
and if you can reach someone who has the other 'remote' for your car, you can
unlock the doors (or the trunk).
A  Note: I didn’t believe this when I heard about it! A friend rang his daughter in Sydney from Perth they went on holiday.  She had the spare car key.  They tried it out and it unlocked their car over a mobile phone!'

THIRD
Hidden Battery Power

To activate, press the keys *3370# (remember the asterisk).  Do this when the phone is almost dead.
Your mobile will restart in a special way with this new reserve and the instrument will show a 50%
increase in battery life. This reserve will get re charged when you charge your mobile next time.
This secret is in the fine print in most phone manuals.  Most people however skip this information without realising.

FOURTH
How to disable a STOLEN mobile phone?

To  check your Mobile phone's serial
number, key in the following digits on your  phone: * # 0 6 #
Ensure you put an asterisk BEFORE the #06# sequence.

A  15 digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to
your handset. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe. If your
phone ever get stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them
this code. They will then be able to block your handset so even if
the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless.
You probably won't get your phone back,
but at  least you know that whoever stole it can't use/sell it either. If
everybody done this, there would be no point in people
stealing mobile phones.
This secret is also in the fine print of most mobile phone manuals.  It was created for the very purpose of trying to prevent phones from being stolen.

Also -ATM   PIN Number Reversal - Good to Know  !!

If you should ever be forced by a robber to withdraw money from an ATM
machine, you  can notify the police by entering your PIN # in
reverse. For example, if your  pin number is 1234, then you would put
in 4321. The ATM system recognizes  that your PIN number is backwards
from the ATM card you placed in the  machine. The machine will still
give you the money you requested, but unknown  to the robber, the
police will be immediately dispatched to the location.
All ATM’s carry this emergency sequencer by law.

This information was recently broadcast on by Crime Stoppers
however it is seldom used because people just don't know about it.

Please pass this along to everyone.
This is the kind of information people don't mind receiving, so pass it
on to your family and friends.

http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/household/cellphones.asp

Flurries of kisses

It has been a fascinating month I have shared with Samantha.
(right in picture with Daniel). She was brought here as an orphan, so there is no mother figure that I can count on to foster her. All our females are paired with males. This has meant that I am muma and papa. This is a 24/7 job. I am not denying that it has its difficult moments, since I have 25 other monkeys to care for. I can't take her with me when I enter other enclosures, but by and large she is sweet tempered and has no problem in being left for short periods in a small comfortable enclosure, apart from screaming blue murder until I return. But this has been a period of marked change. She has grown in a very short time from a fairly immobile baby to a very active monkey. She is constantly on the move apart from siesta (about 12 noon). She lives and sleeps with me in my quarters and I have compromised. Instead of allowing her to throw everything in my room piece by piece to the floor, I have moved all my possessions to the floor.
Most young monkeys bite if they do not get their own way or sometimes in play. I have yet to see her bite. She is a very loving person. I get sudden and surprising flurries of kisses when I least expect it.

It's Raining Cats and Dogs.

We have had very heavy rain over Canaote this last few weeks. We have an idiom in English,  we say it's 'raining cats and dogs'. I don't know the origin of the expression. It's lost in the mist of time.
But more appropriate at this time, at Canaote would be, 'it's raining baby monkeys'. My picture shows Samantha (nearest) and Daniel Both only 4 months old. Yet yesterday I accepted another baby of the same age. A little boy called Chiquetin. He will arrive shortly. These young monkeys should be in the forest with their families. Not with me at Canaote. The trade in young monkeys and other wild life goes on unabated. The carnage of the mothers in their forest continues. Never in the years I have worked with these children have I been more needed. Never have I felt as powerless.

A magic moment missed.

Are there moments when you say, 'I wish I had thought to take a picture of that? This happened to me yesterday.

Samantha loves to be carried around on my shoulder. she sits squarely at the back of my neck with both hand grasping my hair. She feels secure and we can go quite long walks without fear of her falling off.

The magic moment happened yesterday when two policemen arrived to talk about the car theft. Samantha took a liking to one of them, a rare event, she is not liberal with her favours. She jumped onto his shoulder and grasped for his hair, then grasped for his hair, then grasped for his hair. Unfortunately the policemen was completely bald and Samantha's grasping left nothing in her hand. She was clearly puzzled by this and repeated her action finally giving up in disgust.
We all laughed.
There that was a magic moment missed. Afterwards I kicked myself for not having a camera to hand.

This has strengthened my resolve

I apologise. I have not posted for a few days. I am sure you realise  that my mind has been occupied by the several disasters that have tested me.  But I can say that friends of Cañaote Rescue have been generous.

Nearly 500 friends on Facebook have 'liked' the video that PRN made, asking Ford to donate a car to us.

Two friends in Caracas have promised a substantial donation to aid the purchase of a submersible water pump.

The director of PRN made a personal substantial donation.

A very good friend on Facebook has been running a raffle, depositing the proceeds to our account.

The number of goodwill messages has been tremendous.

All in all I am humbled by the high opinion my friends have of my work and the love shown to us in this adversity.

This has strengthened my resolve to continue caring for the little ones. It has reinforced my belief that this is God's work and that He is finding a way for us.

Esto ha fortalecido mi determinación

Me disculpo. No he publicado durante unos días.

Do you love animals?

Do you love animals? Do you love them till it hurts, till the eyes are dry because you have no more tears? I think this way when I know that there are people in the forest killing monkey mothers so they can catch, bag and sell their babies. I think this way when I know there are people who in their ignorance, buy these baby monkeys. I think this way when these same people get bitten or attract the attention of the authorities and then, want to off load the child, this tiny piece of embarrassment. I think this way when I realize that I am one of the few resources, the only place to go and I am so powerless.

A very severe blow to Cañaote Rescue Centre.

A few days ago our Ford Bronco was stolen at gun point. This has been a very severe blow to the operation of Cañaote Rescue Centre. All food and supplies are transported to the centre by car. Cañaote is in a remote area and there is no other means of transporting goods. Since the breakdown of our water pump the car has also been used daily to transfer fresh potable water.

I cannot over emphasise the seriousness of this loss.
Our friends at Primate Rescue have made a video, appealing to Ford to make a donation of a pickup. Clearly this is a tall order but if enough of our friends 'like' the Facebook page and the video on Youtube, perhaps Ford will consider this story a good promotion and worth supporting.

Please 'like' the videos and spread the word. We do need your help.

Who Is Silvia?

Who Is Silvia?

Who is Silvia? what is she,
That all our swains commend her?
Holy, fair, and wise is she;
The heaven such grace did lend her,
That she might admirèd be.

Is she kind as she is fair?
        For beauty lives with kindness.
Love doth to her eyes repair,
To help him of his blindness,
And, being helped, inhabits there.

Then to Silvia let us sing,
        That Silvia is excelling;
She excels each mortal thing
        Upon the dull earth dwelling:
To her let us garlands bring.

                                    William Shakespeare

Our top picture is Silvia, the wild Howler Monkey (araguato). She has now lived with us for over two years. It is a mystery why she stays. At first we thought that she was a domestic monkey, escaped and looking for a home but I no longer think that. She is truly wild. After many months of encouragement she now comes down and eat from my hand. We leave plates of food for her above one of the enclosures at mealtimes. When I am hand feeding the other children with titbits,  biscuits, bananas, she always appears and demands her share. She is really one of the family albeit that she lives alone. She goes around all the enclosures during the day, All that have male alpha monkeys that is. Formerly she lived in the trees nearby but recently I discovered that she is sleeping in the double roof section of our house. I checked on some of my original photographs of her and she is much bigger now. Pregnant?
In today's photograph, taken early this morning, you can see that she is eating some Bignay fruit. All our children love this fruit. It grows in abundance in our botanic garden. It is quite comical to watch the monkeys eat it. They hold it in both hands like a piece of corn, then run their mouths along it snapping off the fruits and eating them.

Lorenzo joins the chorus with his new family

At Canaote we have a two monkeys from Puerto La Cruz. They are a pair, boy and girl Alouatta seniculus. Lorenzo and Nineta. They are very much loved by their human family. Until recent times they were free in the trees at their home. The farm was at a fairy remote site. Neighbors moved into the area with their unpleasant children. The boy of the new family attacked the male monkey first with a stone, which blinded him in the right eye, then on another occasion attacked him with a machete. This resulted in the lost of the use of his hand. The monkey's family were terrified that next time the boy would kill the monkey. They called me and I accepted the two monkeys here at Canaote. The girl has been no problem she has settled down well. She is sweet and friendly. The boy Lorenzo, not so. Sulking and silent . Whist all the other monkeys in our facility roar at least twice a day, he remained quiet. I looked for an answer and strangely I found it in music. The human family had a habit of playing certain music to the pair of monkeys and they did this fairly often.

I did an experiment. I played a lot of music to them, music similar but not the same as they were used to. I got no reaction. I played songs that they had been exposed to and Lorenzo now regularly joins in the chorus.

The short amateur video I made is on this link. I thought you might like to see this.

No tenía reacción.

Sampling the season’s bounty

Lots of pictures today because this fruit is from our own botanic garden and is very popular with the children.
Top of course is Samantha and she is enjoying some of the first fruit picked this year. All our monkeys love this fruit and today it was a special pre breakfast treat for everyone. Next I thought you might like to take a close look at the fruit. Many Venezuelan gardens will have this but maybe call it by a different name.
Just so you can recognise it early, I have included a picture of the flower and as you see it is very attractive with very pretty flowers.
Lastly the tree with it's scientific label. This is a typical label in our garden. Everything is carefully labelled in this scientific way. It make it a pleasure to walk around and identify everything thing you look at. A botanic student's delight and a pleasure for everyone else.

This seedling was purchased in June 1997 from the Flower shop near to 'Red Line', a shop in San Carlos, Cojedes, Venezuela  It has fruited a few times before but this year it is absolutely covered in fruit local name Pomagás, Syzygium malaccense or commonly Malay Apple.

(Manzana Malaya).
