If only they could speak

Schatov (left) and his companion Sophie

How many times have you thought it? How many times have you said it? If only they could speak. If only I could understand them. Many times I have written in my blog that we know so little about the howler monkey (araguato). I have lived with them for seventeen years and even though I have read every academic paper I could get hold of and even with my personal experience, I say the same thing. We know so little about their thinking.

Two days ago, Sophie the female companion of Schatov, left their enclosure. There is a small hole in the roof. We have repaired it a number of times but clearly that sheet needs to be replaced. Sophie is  intelligent and uses this hole to exit.

She is a great escape artist. Many years ago she left us for a week and when she was finally found, she was very weak and anemic, she had a vigorous parasite infestation. After that bad experience, she has limited her escapes to just a few hours. then she stands at the enclosure door waiting to be let in.

Two days ago, after exiting, she made friends with the wild one, Silvia. The pair of them just sit around the compound together. This evening they sat on my car bonnet. I have made a point of never forcing her to return. I wait for her to want to, or to succumb to banana bribery. That way I have kept her trust. This evening I made great efforts to get her to return, Schatov is very upset by her absence.  She has not responded. She sat on my foot. She pushed herself against my leg like a pussy cat. In fact everything except return to her enclosure. Why? She appears to be very fond of Schatov. They sleep close to each other. They are always within a few feet of each other. Why today does she not want to return? Is this a lovers quarrel? Will all be forgiven tomorrow?

If I understood. If she could tell me, I could help her resolve the problem. As it is I am left as ever wishing that if only she could speak, if only I understood her.

Si tan sólo pudieran hablar

Schatov (izquierda) y su esposa Sofía.

¿Cuántas veces has pensado? ¿Cuántas veces lo has dicho?
Si he entendido bien.

That's a báquiro not a monkey.

Here in Venezuela, báquiro is the local word for a peccary. Our picture shows a little girl. I am guessing she is about 5 weeks old. Her teeth have not yet fully developed and she is on soft food.  She can do serious damage to banana squashed up with milk and she likes a bowl of water. She is very friendly and wants company. We have not yet found a house for her but we are working on it. How did she get here? One of our friends drove away in his car two nights ago and much to our surprise came straight back. In his hand was this little girl. He found her in the road. He looked around for the mother but without success. This is a remote location which borders on fairly deep forest and hillside fields. An ideal location for families of  baquiro. Over the years we have seen them often. Unfortunately they are a popular meal with local farmers. We theorised that the mother and family were hunted and the little girl got left behind. We have fostered baquiros before. Given a chance they become very domesticated. In fact, if they are allowed they will run with the dogs. We look forward to living with her. Name? We have not yet decided.
Many people think that the baquiro is a member of the pig family. Maybe because of the flat nose. But this is not the case. Here is it's proper classification.

United : Animal
Filo :  Chordata
Class : Mammalia
Order : Artiodactyla
Family : Tayassuidae
Gender : Pecari
Species : P. tajacu

Nombre? Todavía no hemos decidido.

Reino: Animal
Filo:   Chordata
Clase: Mamifero
Orden: Artiodactyla
Familia: tayasuidos
Género: Pecari
Especie: P. tajacu

The love triangle.

Our picture is of Moñito (left) and Roquacita in full voice. You see the way they throw their heads back during the crescendo.

Well that was the week that was and I hope not too many like it. Where  shall I begin? The events began on Wednesday of last week. Eric escaped from his enclosure leaving his mate, Roquacita behind. Diligent search has revealed no hole in the netting and I can only suppose that he ran passed the helper when food was being delivered and the helper is saying nothing.
Very soon Eric met up with Sylvia. Now regular readers will know that Sylvia is a wild, young adult Araguato female who has come to live permanently in the canopy above our compound.
I think they make a grand pair, ranging across the forest local to our center but this left poor Roquacita alone. Roquacita's enclosure is adjacent to my quarters. I could hear her crying at night and it nearly broke my heart to hear her. It had been obvious for some time that Roquacita was very attached to Eric.
I should tell you that it had been Sylvia's habit to visit all the male adult araguato's every day. Spending time at first light with Monito. Jumping backwards and forwards from the Nisboro tree that borders on Monito's enclosure. She would descend to the top of his garden and the pair of them would exchange greetings. Then just across the way to spend a few moments with Schatov, not too long because Sophie is very jealous. From there she traveled across the canopy to Lucio's domain. After spending time flirting with Lucio (much to the annoyance of Jaco his wife). She would eat the breakfast that is laid out for her everyday. Although not a member of our household nevertheless we place all meals out for her to share. Later in the afternoon she would ascend the mango tree above Eric's domain. Then dangle from the lower branches and in doing so infuriate Roquacita, who told her in no uncertain terms to take her hands off her man.
This errant situation continued for the rest of the week and the weekend. With Roquacita getting more and more upset. I seriously suspected that she might be becoming depressed. At this stage it was uncertain whether we would be able to capture Eric. The thought was that it would not be such a bad thing if he were to remain free in the trees with Sylvia.I have often thought about Sylvia's future. Should we capture her and pair her with one of our males or should we let her decide? In the meantime Roquacita continued to be very upset. I made the decision that Monito should move in with Roquacita at least experimentally. Minimally this would take her mind off Eric’s departure and might solve Monito's loneliness.
On Sunday the issue was resolved. Eric was captured and placed in Monito's old enclosure. He is now the lonely one.
Roquacita is happy with Monito and they are making a happy pair. Already they are sleeping and shouting together. See our photograph.
As for Eric, Sylvia continues to visit him every morning and of course he gets lots of extra visits from me. He is not alone as a punishment but as a result of the events that I have described. As soon as I can either find him a companion or integrate him into another group I will. Not easy. Most often, male araguato's do not like each other unless they have been brought up with that other male and even then trouble can erupt. Monito is an example of that. He was brought up with Lucio but when Lucio's wife Jaco had a baby, Lucio attacked Monito violently. A fight to the death if I had not intervened.
I have often said that we know so little about the mind set of the araguato monkey. Certain differences are bound to exist among semi captive monkeys compared with the children in the wild.

But do you see some similarity in this behavior with humans. The unfaithful male, the female with her eye on someone else s mate? Maybe I am being cynical, because anthropomorphic thinking often leads to incorrect conclusions.

What did the monkeys at Canaote have for breakfast this morning?

What did the monkeys at Canaote have for breakfast this morning? Monkeys love mildly cooked platino. Our first picture shows the plate of platino prepared and ready for cooking. We gently cook the platino in a very large frying pan. We use a mixture of milk, butter and vanilla to 'fry' it.

Our second picture shows the cooked platino ready for serving with a portion for me of course.
