The people in Lucio's garden.

Top left is Schatov, looking very handsome as usual. Schatov poses for the camera. He puffs himself up into a warlike appearance. Moments before he was purring on my lap but I didn't tell you that.

On the right is Lucio. He has been pleased with himself all afternoon. He stole my hat then went off with my camera case. There is always a lot of fun action when you are in his company.

On the middle photograph we have the lovely lady Jaco on the left with a side view of Schatov. They are often seen together although Jaco is careful to spread her attention between Schatov and Lucio. She is a great peace keeper.
Bottom left we can see Monito. He was not very happy when I took this picture. He had just jumped on my head and nearly knocked the camera out of my hand. When I shouted at him he ran away and that is the moment I snapped him.
Now bottom right shouldn't be in this posting because it was taken shortly before in Manina's garden. Here we have Manina relaxing on his garden pillow. He was given it because he frequently spends his siesta close to the fence where he can see the humans at work. The pillow is more comfortable than the cement floor. Today he shares it with Tutti and on the right side with Barnaby.

Barnaby gets a family visit.

There is no doubt that our monkeys love to have their families visit. Yesterday in the late afternoon, Marciela the human mommy of Barnaby, arrived from Caracas weighed down with gifts.
The family spent many hours playing with the children and there was an air of excitement throughout the whole compound. Our picture shows Barnaby trying to get his mothers attention, whilst Manina had completely monopolized Mariela's lap.

At the same time that Barnaby was playing with his mother, Tutti was inventing a new game. He stole my camera case and rushed around the enclosure blind, with the case firmly on his head. I was surprised by the length of time he devoted to this game. Generally a Howler's attention span is not great but Tutti is a very bright little person and he played this game for most of the time I was with the children. Our picture shows him just putting on the case. All good thing come to an end and Mariela left for home, having seen how well Barnaby had totally acclimatized to his new home.

Schatov, Lucio, Monito y Jaco jugando.

Schatov, Lucio, Monito and Jaco at play.

In the photograph line up. Schatov then Monito. Lucio is at the uppper far right and Jaco is pictured beneath.
These pictures were taken towards the end of Sunday afternoon. All these children were very excited to have me sitting with them. They jumped all over me. Lucio grabbed my chin and wanted a kiss, except it was not just one kiss. He wanted to repeat it many times. Jaco wanted a cuddle but Monito, sitting on my head kept pushing her away. She was not pleased and pushed him to the ground. Schatov, not to be outdone jumped onto my lap and settled himself there. Lucio, having been moved from his position decided to throw my hat to the floor. But Jaco held on and finally was comfortably tucked under my chin. Whilst Venezuela was attending to the referendum, we enjoyed ourselves. It was not easy to hang on to my camera but as you see from the pictures, I got it out safely.

Facebook | Carolina Yañez's Photos - Mi Lucio I

Facebook | Carolina Yañez's Photos - Mi Lucio I

We have a few 'first time' ideas for you this morning. Clicking on the Facebook above will take you to Carolina's (human mother of Lucio) album on facebook. Carolina and Gilda are very regular visitors to Canaote. The photo's in this album are new. They were taken on the last visit which was last weekend. This particular picture, one of my favorites, is of Lucio (front), Schatov and Jaco at the back. Pity we have no sound for this picture because they are caught here in full voice. As you can see they are throwing everything into this song.

Another first today is the 'Born Free' vocal link on the left hand panel of our blog. Although associated with the film about setting lions free, this song has always meant to me, the freedom of all animals to live undisturbed by humans. Click it and enjoy the sentiment and the music. By the way this is a ringtone and you can load it into some phones. I have it in mine as a constant reminder.

Monkey loves Monkey.

Gabriela has just returned from her Christmas vacation. She came back loaded with gifts for the children. I count five monkey dolls. The reaction of the children to the dolls has been fascinating to watch. Howler monkeys learn and they learn very quickly but they are a cautious lot. The new troop of monkey dolls was immediately viewed with suspicion. Schatov and Lucio puffed up and started an hour long roar. For the first time I noticed Moñito puffed up. Now if that didn’t frighten the new comers nothing would. I once wrote a piece called Girls are Silly but not in this case. Whilst the boys were in a complete funk, Jaco calmly reached down and lifted one of the dolls into her arms, then gave the doll a kiss. She followed up with another doll in the same way. The boys looked on with disbelief. Emboldened with what they had seen, the boys now cautiously moved in. They approached very tentatively at first. Moñito was first to actually touch a doll. Then the others not to be seen as cowards in front of women and children, joined in the game of tossing the dolls around and carrying them around the walkways. Jaco has one favourite doll and she has taken it inside their house.
Thank you Gabriela for these lovely dolls, the children love them.

Our photo's. Top left is Jaco playing with the dolls and showing no fear whatever. Top right is Moñito , all puffed up and this is the first time we have seen him ready for a fight. Bottom picture is Rafael the helper with a group of the wonderful dolls.
