Chillin is expecting a visit from his human mummy.

Chillin came to us as a baby in April 2008. He arrived at the same time as Erik. All this time they have been like brothers. Some while ago they graduated from sleeping in my quarters to having an enclosure of their own. This was adjacent to MonaLisa, Emma and Nancy. Boys will be boys and it was not long before Chillin and Erik went visiting. They got on so well with the girls that we removed the doorway separating them. They have all shared both enclosures ever since.
Chillin is expecting his human mother Valentina to visit on Sunday next. Maybe some more pictures then.
We suspect that Valentina will be accompanied by her friend who wishes to bring another baby howler to us. I hear that the baby is only a few months old. More news as it comes.

The photographs are Chillin to the left and Erik at the top.

A weekend of romance.

Regular readers will know that we have two outstanding social problems at Canaote. The first is Sophie. She has lived alone since Totto released himself into the forest. The second is Schatov, who is now a fully grown Alpha male and has a habit of biting staff who attempt to clean his domain.
Last Friday afternoon we attempted to solve these issues. How wonderful it would be if Schatov and Sophie liked each other. We have been preparing a new very large enclosure for just this purpose. This is one of our older enclosures but all the wooden supports have been replaced with metal. It has been completely refurbished with new bamboo walkways and swings. It has a lot of toys including suspended tires. Three mature mango trees occupy this tall space. The house, which has two floors, is large and comfortable. We had high hopes when we introduced the two monkeys. They seemed to like each other at first. A motion with the tongue indicates desire to mate and there was plenty of this.
Sophie from the first was very active in seeking an escape. She searched every inch of the newly reinforced wire of the enclosure. The Friday the night they stayed together and it was not until Saturday morning that we realised that she was gone.
Not to be completely defeated by this we introduced another female. Nancy has shown a great deal of interest in Schatov, so we decided to give her a chance. This was a similar story. At first they seemed to be courting and very interested in each other. By Sunday morning she was gone. During Sunday and Monday we watched an extraordinary sight. Nancy travelled across the canopy from the roof of her original home to the enclosure with Schatov repeatedly. On each occasion she entered and spent time with Schatov. Clearly she really likes him. But the call of family drags her back all the time to her original home.
Schatov, quite justifiably was confused by all this coming and going. He sat at the gate and begged me to return him to his own domain. Finally when it was clear that Nancy had no intention of settling down, I regretfully returned Schatov to his home. Nancy finally gave in and allowed me to catch her and return her to her home with MonaLisa, Emma, Chilin and Eric.
The story has an even stranger ending because we had left the door open to Sophie’s house. Someone shouted, ‘There she is’. Yes Sophie returned herself to her own quarters, entering through the front door.
What can we learn from this? Our howlers become much attached to their environment, even though a relationship is in the balance. They prefer the life they have known to something new.
Finally everyone ended up where they had started. Clearly we must finally find and repair the holes in the enclosure. We had better find the holes in our thinking as well. How do we put these people together without giving them a sense of loss of family? Humans do it, more or less.
Our photograph is Schatov on the left with Sophie.

Sophie came home.

David has been out all day and when he returned at about five PM. He told me that he had seen a monkey on the roof as he drove in. I searched the roof area but could find no monkey. I did a quick role call and found that we had no monkey missing except for Sophie. We scanned the trees but still no sign of her. Then suddenly someone shouted, 'there she is'. pointing at the shed roof adjacent to Sophie's enclosure. No only had she come home but she jumped from the shed to her own enclosure and then greeted me inside her house as if she had never been away. Tomorrow we will take a closer look at her and check her out for parasites or any other nasty she might have picked up in the forest.

Welcome home Sophie.

Sophie regresó a casa.

Bienvenida a casa Sophie.

Barnaby is a delight. (2)

Whilst I was photographing Maniña and Maria Teresa, Barnaby was trying to get in the picture by doing some remarkable gymnastics on the swings. The swings have recently been refurbished. The very wet weather caused the old swings to split. They started taking up water like blotting paper and finally they completely disintergrated. Fortunately we had a visit from a carpenter and he soon made us a some new ones from a good quality wood. In our pictures you can see Barnaby having a great time with the swings. His coat is really beautiful and somewhat lighter in color than the others.

Barnaby es un deleite. (2)

When you are little.....

....it pays to make powerful friends.

Maniña is well known for the benevolent way he rules his family of boys. But the kids do get a bit boisterous. So it pays to have a big friend. Little Maria Teresa, seen here with her friend Maniña, shows wisdom beyond her years when she chooses him as a pal. Maniña is genuinely fond of her and can often be seen with his arm gently around her shoulders. Maria Teresa is only visiting daily at the moment. She is not yet a resident. We hope in time she will adopt this family of boys. Tutti, Barnaby and Saco also play with her but they are still trying to work out the difference. I mean she doesn't really look like one of the boys.

Cuando usted es pequeño.....

No News on Sophie

Sophie moved off into the forest some days ago and since then there have been no sightings of her. She was on heat and my theory is that she is seeking a husband among the wild Howlers. She has done this several times before but always returned after a short time. I will keep you informed if there is news.

Visit of the children of the ICEC.

On Saturday morning early, three large coaches arrived at Canaote. We were able to welcome the children and staff from Plan Valalivina. There were altogether about seventy people. Certainly this was the largest group ever to visit us. The children’s ages ranged from eight years to about fourteen. We were surprised by their excellent behaviour. The children were clearly thrilled to meet our big group of monkeys. The Howler females, including MonaLisa and Emma, were not so well behaved. They puffed up and made angry protests. They were clearly intimidated by such a large group of humans. But soon they settled down and the children fed all the monkeys with the peanuts that we provided. We were surprised by the number of cell phones with cameras that the children had. Indeed some of them actually had digital cameras. Maria Teresa, our baby Howler, was particularly popular. Many of the children wanted to be photographed with her. After a while it was David’s turn to show the children our Botanic garden and he went with them to the garden. David told me later about the intelligent questions the children asked. He also said that they descended like a pack of locusts on some of the fruit trees. Well that is what fruit trees are for. We enjoyed this visit and we hope that the children were inspired to respect monkeys and to appreciate the abundance of trees and fruits available in their country.

Our picture shows just a portion of the group of children, it wasn't possible to get such a large group in front of the camera. You can see David in the back row. He enjoyed telling the children about the trees and plants in the Botanic Garden. He says they were most attentive and appreciative.

We welcome visitors to the garden and the monkeys. The garden is a very instructive tour because all the trees are labeled with their names and all possible detail like when planted, where the seed came from and the Latin and scientific names of the plants.

Sophie is in the trees.

Yesterday Sophie released herself into the forest. She has done this a number of times before but always returned within a few days. Sophie has been a concern to us for some time. She was happily paired with Totto until he escaped during a storm. The enclosure was damaged at that time. We have attempred to mate her with Schatov but so far she shows no interest. During the last few days there has been a lot of wild male activity near her enclosure. It is possible that she is seeking a mate among the wild ones.

The following article appeared in El Nacional on Monday 3rd August 2009. No translation is available at this moment.

A monkey is for life.

A howler monkey can live to the age of twenty five and perhaps longer in captivity. Capuchins have an even longer lifespan of forty years. A monkey is for life. When monkeys are traded at the roadside, how much thought goes into the purchase? Does the buyer think about the monkey’s future? I imaging not.

At ARFA Canaote we solve a critical problem for many people. ‘What can I do now that I can no longer maintain my monkey in my home?’
The reasons are many.
The owner:-
Has become too sick to care for the monkey.
The animal has bitten a family member. All monkeys bite.
The monkey frequently escapes causing an issue with a neighbours or authorities.
The reasons are too many to list.

We give a permanent home and shelter in a caring environment. We not only supply food and a safe clean place to live but we try to replace the love these animals have formerly received either from their original monkey family or their subsequent human one. We provide continuous heath monitoring by frequent veterinary visits and a knowledgeable staff.

We have a the moment twenty monkeys in our care. We are not provided for by any institution. We fund our work entirely. We invite former owners to remember their responsibility and make a regular monthly donation. A monkey is for life.

Our picture is Maniña. An adult Howler Monkey who has been with us for many years.

Nosotros consolidamos nuestro trabajo completamente.
