The love triangle.

Our picture is of Moñito (left) and Roquacita in full voice. You see the way they throw their heads back during the crescendo.

Well that was the week that was and I hope not too many like it. Where  shall I begin? The events began on Wednesday of last week. Eric escaped from his enclosure leaving his mate, Roquacita behind. Diligent search has revealed no hole in the netting and I can only suppose that he ran passed the helper when food was being delivered and the helper is saying nothing.
Very soon Eric met up with Sylvia. Now regular readers will know that Sylvia is a wild, young adult Araguato female who has come to live permanently in the canopy above our compound.
I think they make a grand pair, ranging across the forest local to our center but this left poor Roquacita alone. Roquacita's enclosure is adjacent to my quarters. I could hear her crying at night and it nearly broke my heart to hear her. It had been obvious for some time that Roquacita was very attached to Eric.
I should tell you that it had been Sylvia's habit to visit all the male adult araguato's every day. Spending time at first light with Monito. Jumping backwards and forwards from the Nisboro tree that borders on Monito's enclosure. She would descend to the top of his garden and the pair of them would exchange greetings. Then just across the way to spend a few moments with Schatov, not too long because Sophie is very jealous. From there she traveled across the canopy to Lucio's domain. After spending time flirting with Lucio (much to the annoyance of Jaco his wife). She would eat the breakfast that is laid out for her everyday. Although not a member of our household nevertheless we place all meals out for her to share. Later in the afternoon she would ascend the mango tree above Eric's domain. Then dangle from the lower branches and in doing so infuriate Roquacita, who told her in no uncertain terms to take her hands off her man.
This errant situation continued for the rest of the week and the weekend. With Roquacita getting more and more upset. I seriously suspected that she might be becoming depressed. At this stage it was uncertain whether we would be able to capture Eric. The thought was that it would not be such a bad thing if he were to remain free in the trees with Sylvia.I have often thought about Sylvia's future. Should we capture her and pair her with one of our males or should we let her decide? In the meantime Roquacita continued to be very upset. I made the decision that Monito should move in with Roquacita at least experimentally. Minimally this would take her mind off Eric’s departure and might solve Monito's loneliness.
On Sunday the issue was resolved. Eric was captured and placed in Monito's old enclosure. He is now the lonely one.
Roquacita is happy with Monito and they are making a happy pair. Already they are sleeping and shouting together. See our photograph.
As for Eric, Sylvia continues to visit him every morning and of course he gets lots of extra visits from me. He is not alone as a punishment but as a result of the events that I have described. As soon as I can either find him a companion or integrate him into another group I will. Not easy. Most often, male araguato's do not like each other unless they have been brought up with that other male and even then trouble can erupt. Monito is an example of that. He was brought up with Lucio but when Lucio's wife Jaco had a baby, Lucio attacked Monito violently. A fight to the death if I had not intervened.
I have often said that we know so little about the mind set of the araguato monkey. Certain differences are bound to exist among semi captive monkeys compared with the children in the wild.

But do you see some similarity in this behavior with humans. The unfaithful male, the female with her eye on someone else s mate? Maybe I am being cynical, because anthropomorphic thinking often leads to incorrect conclusions.
