Cosito arrives to stay.

Yesterday afternoon Cosito arrived at ARFA Canaote with his human family. They had discovered him crawling in a Tinaco street. They rescued him but soon decided that a baby monkey was not a good pet. After all as a baby he needs 24 hour attention. No less than a humLunes,
Domingo, 03 de octubre de 2010, an child. The family asked me if Cosito could join the Canaote monkeys. We accepted him. He has bawled all night, trying to make monkey sense of his new environment. Early this morning, he drank plenty of milk and now is fast asleep. Bawl all night and sleep first thing in the morning. How typical of a human child.

Barnaby on the ball.

When Barnaby arrived at Canaote, he was short of one ball. This is a similar condition found in some humans. If it does not descend it can indicate a future problem with inferiility. Usually it solves itself during the first year. The good news is that Barnaby's testicle has descended as you can see from the photograph.

Outreach meets Cosito.

Recently we were told by one of our staff, that there was a new monkey with a family in Tinaco. We arranged to visit and we were given a warm welcome. Cosito is about four months old. A very bright and active young man, The family say that they found him walking the streets near the new government Mecal shopping center. We gave the family advice on feeding and living condition. Above all the baby needs warmth at night. I have a feeling that the family will soon bring him to Canaote.

Little monkeys should never be put up for sale. Taking them from their mothers at such an early age, robs them of the important contact between mother and child. This is particularly wrong because the baby is so young. We will do our best to make his life a happy one.

Ramona September 2010 Visit.

Regular users of this blog will know that Canaote Rescue Center has an outreach arm. That is to say that we visit monkeys that are housed in the community. These are all in homes where we know that the owners love and care for their monkeys. We offer advice on housing and feeding and love visiting these children, Ramona is visited fairly often and she recognizes our car and becomes quite exited. She knows that we always bring a gift of leaves freshly taken from the forest especially for her. This time we took Chinese long beans which we know she likes. Over the years she has changed her residence, Formerly she was housed during the day in a tree in the street. There was a incident with a passerby and the owner sort  a new home for her, Fortunately there was a tree nearby behind the house, This has proved to be a safe home during the day. She has a chain which is secured to her with a soft belt. She has learned to handle the chain without it becoming tangled. Today the owner told me that they are planing a big cage for her. She would be happier without the chain I am sure, She is well fed and in excellent health. I really enjoy visiting her.

Visita a Ramona Septiembre 2010.

Questions and answers.

Our last post evoked many questions about the life of our Howler monkeys. So this post is a more generalized view which should answer most of those questions.

Alouatta seniculus
(red howler monkey)
Alouatta seniculus have the widest geographical distribution of all the New World primates. Red howler monkeys range throughout the northern half of South America, from Colombia to Bolivia.
Physical Description
Alouatta seniculus are slightly sexually dimorphic. Females have a body length of 46-57 centimeters; males, which are larger, have a body length of 49-72 cm. Both sexes have a long, prehensile tail of approximately 49-75 cm. The coat color of males and females is a deep reddish-brown, although the shade varies slightly with age. Red howlers have a large neck with tremendous lower jaw and hyroid bones, giving them a forbidding expression.

Reproduction
Due to such an unbalanced sex ratio, fierce sexual competition exists between and within red howler troops. Red howler males, which are expelled from their natal troop upon reaching sexual maturity, are forced to invade an outside group and gain admittance. Once they have accomplished this, they violently kill any infants present in the group. By killing infants in a newly invaded troop, a male can mate quickly and ensure that the new offspring of the group are his own. Mothers do try to protect their offspring against assaulting males. Unfortunately for the female, this is not particularly successful; less than 25% of offspring survive a male howler invasion.
The mating behavior of red howlers is another interesting aspect of their social interactions. Males and females often form consortships, an unusually close spatial relationship, before any sexual exchange has begun. Once these associations are established, sexual solicitations begin. Although seductive behaviors can be performed by both sexes, the female most often takes on the aggressive role. When attempting to attract a male, the female approaches him and moves her torque rhythmically. The male may respond the same way, but if he does not, the female may simply try to entice another male.
Alouatta seniculus appears to breed throughout the year. However, in two habitats in Venezuela, the birth frequency is reduced during the early wet season, May through July. The estrous cycle ranges from 16-20 days, with the female being receptive for 2-4 days. Red howler females give birth for the first time around 5 years of age, while males usually do not father an offspring until approximately 7 years. Therefore, a female reaches sexual maturity a couple of years before a male.

Newborn A. seniculus are at first quite helpless and are carried around at the mother's belly. Young red howlers begin using their prehensile tails before they are one month old. An infant uses its tail to secure itself to its mother, for in this stage of its life the mother pays little or no attention to her offspring, and fails to give the baby any assistance!
Parental investment:
pre-fertilization (provisioning, protecting: female); pre-hatching/birth (provisioning: female, protecting: female); pre-weaning/fledging (provisioning: female); extended period of juvenile learning.
Behavior
Red howler monkeys live in relatively large social groups, consisting of approximately 10 individuals, with only one or perhaps two of the individuals being males. Alouatta seniculus exhibit many interesting behaviors. They are most famous for their "dawn chorus", a deafening roar that can be heard up to 5 kilometers away! These resonating howls, performed primarily by the males of a group, are answered by all other howler troops within ear shot. This way, one troop can constantly inform another of its precise location, thus avoiding an energetically costly squabble over resources.
During parturition, a newborn usually becomes the focus of attention of several other females. Typically, it is females without infants of their own that are attracted to these infants. In these instances, the females are extremely gentle with the little ones, touching them with their muzzles and hands. They may even occasionally encourage the infant to crawl on them. Males also are known to tolerate the activities of infant howlers in their troop. Similar to the adult females, the male red howlers also allow the infants to climb all over them. This of course takes place long after the male has killed all offspring that are not his own.
Food Habits
Alouatta seniculus are primarily folivorous. Leaves are low in nutrients and sugars in comparison with other food choices, and red howler monkeys have two large sections in their hindgut which contain the bacteria needed to digest the cellulose in leaves. This change in anatomy results in a large gut that occupies one-third of their total body volume. In addition, their extremely deep lower jaw bones aid red howlers in chewing. Alouatta seniculus also improve their digestive efficiency by feeding primarily on tender young leaves and on some species of leaves that are unusually nutritious. In addition, they eat sugary fruits and flowers when these are available, but can sustain themselves for weeks at a time on only leaves, providing these are high in quality. Alouatta seniculus spend almost their entire lives near the top canopy of the forest, where such leaves are most abundant .
Economic Importance for Humans: Positive
Due to their relatively large size, A. seniculus, along with other howler species, are hunted for food and are subject to commercial export.
Conservation Status
Although several other Alouatta species are endangered, A. seniculus has no special conservation status. However, red howlers have become rarer in some areas, most likely due to the destruction of their habitat. Fortunately, they are still abundant in Brazil.
Other Comments
Red howlers have an amusing reaction to rainy days during the tropical wet season. In response to heavy rains, they howl, either at the onset, or often at the sound of approaching rain, and sit hunched over until the rain ends!
Red howler monkeys have overcome problems that are usually associated with having leaves as a principle food source, including their specialized jaw and stomach structures. Behaviorally, they (along with the other species in their genus) are unique in that they have developed the loudest vocalization of any animal in the New World. These adaptations have aided them in becoming an extremely successful primate--and yet they are still able to sleep for more than 15 hours a day!

Preguntas y respuestas.

Enclosures not cages.

At Canaote we try very hard to give our children a natural home. Each of our enclosures is LWH, Long Wide and High. You notice we call them enclosures and not cages. There is a difference. A cage is where you keep a wild animal. Our children are wild animals but they have been introduced to human comforts and treated like small humans. Tugging away all their new learning would be cruel and unnecessary. Each enclosure has at least one live tree. Each has a house with a roof and comforts like a weather proof door and blankets and pillows within. All the enclosures have bamboo walkways, swings and hoops. Dependent on the inhabitant, there are various other toys to keep them occupied. But toys are not enough. We have to address their social needs as well and this is not easy. The monkey has a hierarchical society with the alpha monkey at the top. He is the king. Lesser monkeys like young males have to learn their place. In the case of an alpha who takes over a weaker chief, he will kill or chase off the young males in the group. It is a gruesome event.
So we have to be very careful when a new child arrives. We have to consider the existing social setup in the group.
Where possible we put an adult female with an alpha male. One of the greatest psychological pressures on the adult female is when she comes on heat. This happens several times a month.
At the time of writing Roquacita is on heat. She is very troubled. She has chosen me as the object of her love. During this period she wants to be with me all the time. Whenever I pass her enclosure, she runs to me. Whenever I enter the enclosure she clamps herself to my leg, making sexual signs with her mouth.
Eric has escaped several times recently and he has targeted her enclosure. We allowed him to enter, thinking perhaps that they would make a pair. She regards him as too young for her affections. They have been together now for a week but there is no sign of them getting fond of each other. They sleep separately. We have not been able so far to find the hole he is using to escape. We will wait until we have found it to return him to his own house. We have been thinking that Monito would be a better spouse for Roquacita. In time we will introduce them.
All this shows the difficulty of pairing monkeys to their social needs.

Recintos no jaulas.

Your place or mine?

No new pictures for a little while. My camera is broken. So perhaps this is a good opportunity to talk about a serious matter. When I began this work of providing shelter for howler monkeys some twelve years ago, life was very different. First of all there were only a few monkeys needing care, maybe five or six at the most. The cost of vegetables and milk and bananas, which are the basic foods, was low. There was no need to ask for donations to support the children. I was able to afford their upkeep. In this happy state I did not question the motives of the people who brought their monkeys to me. When MonaLisa was brought to me without as much as a blanket for her to sleep on at night and then never an enquiry as to her wellbeing, I simply shrugged and thought what a sad person has brought her here. What I should have thought and again many times over as the years have gone by is, ‘This person has dumped their responsibility on me’. This monkey bought on the roadside, without the concern that taking on the life of a small monkey entails. We often say that a monkey is not just for Christmas but the thought should not end there. The monkey may live, depending on its type, for twenty five to forty years. When the monkey is small and cute and as the owner receives admiring remarks concerning the little red ball of fur, then nothing is too much trouble to care for the child. The mere thought of parting will bring copious tears. However once the little ball of fur is no longer quite so tiny or has bitten some family member or has terrorised the neighbours with a sudden appearance, then the heartbreaking idea comes about how to get rid of the monkey.
I cannot count the number of ex owners that I have counselled when the tears of parting have been too much. To the point where several people have actually taken their monkey away with them having first intended to leave the monkey in my care, tears streaming from their eyes. They always, return with the monkey. One lady, with her boyfriend, told me that the boyfriend had told her, ‘It’s me or it’. So much for IT.
Times have changed. The price of food and maintenance has increased incredibly and I can no longer afford the cost of running the shelter without some help. The number of monkeys has increased to twenty. We are also caring for seven Capuchin monkeys. It was never our intention to shelter Capuchins as their needs are very different to the Howlers. They need a great deal of additional care as their dexterous little fingers give rise to security concerns. The decision to house a limited number of capuchin monkeys has been in part caused by the closing of the ARFA facility. But when I look at their frightened little faces I cannot turn them away. I believe that the increase in the number of people wishing to bring their monkeys to us has been caused by people wishing to leave Venezuela. In many cases they have abandoned their pets to the street including monkeys. We have two babies abandoned in the streets of Caracas in our care.
A worrying characteristic has emerged. I have been very happy that some owners continue to visit their monkeys even though, sometimes this entails long journeys. But as time goes by and the monkey gets older and yes, bigger, these visits gradually tail off until they cease altogether. I sometime look at some of our older monkeys and in particular the Alphas like Schatov, Lucio and think, ‘your house or mine’. How would the owners like a massive, ferocious looking monkey in their living room? After all they bought it and without me that’s where the monkey would be living.
The answer is not very painful. I will continue to feed, provide a clean comfortable and loving environment for the monkeys. I will even forgive some of the owners for their lack of ongoing care.
In return I want them to make a regular and reliable monthly donation. This is the only way I can continue to do what I do. Asking me to care for your monkey is a responsible thing to do but you have to back it by providing regularly for his/her welfare.

Bees try to move in with Lucio, Monito and Jaco.

Lucio, Monito and Jaco live in a large enclosure in front of my house. They are within sight of Schatov and Sophie. Their house is a double floor. They sleep in the upper part. Events took place yesterday when we discovered that the lower floor had been invaded by bees. We were very surprised by the size of the invasion. How could the bees build such a large nest without us knowing. The monkeys gave no indication of trouble. No one got stung. Our helpers Rafael and Cesar, advanced on the invasion with spray and a high pressure water hose. The monkeys moved to a second house near the entrance and well away from the action. Within a few minutes the helpers had eradicated the invasion.

(Nuestro fotografía Rafael con el panal).n and retrieved the nest.(our photograph nest with Rafael).

Little Sofia the baby capuchin, has been in the wars. Sofia shares the enclosure with Toula and Toula is a much larger monkey. What we didn’t realise was that Toula was taking nearly all the food and that Sofia was going without a full diet. We noticed that Sofia had lost some hair along her flanks. Clearly we had to find a way of getting a full diet for Sofia as well as treating the hair loss. A celotape sample revealed an infection of tiny spiders under the microscope. A couple of shampoos (see picture) was sufficient to remove both the insects and their eggs rapidly. The fur is growing back strongly. Sofia has been moved to a temporary home inside my house, where I can personally supervise her daily meals and already she is looking fatter. That of course leaves the question of her future home. Our plan is to test whether Jean and Jane will accept her. This would be the best solution. Then maybe Oliver will think again about teaming up with Toula. They lived together without conflict before but when Sofia came along we felt that this was a better partnership. Maybe now, with a little patience, Oliver may accept Toula. Boy and girl is always the best option where possible. Monkeys are like people, they like one person but not another. The trick is to test the relationship carefully before committing to a permanent partnership.

New enclosure is complete and occupied

This month we have accepted two new Capuchin monkeys, Jean and Jane. Their pictures will follow as soon as conditions permit. At the moment heavy cloud surrounds the Movistar antenna on mount Gloria and this is severely limiting our signal.

The picture we have for you today shows Meriann, little Christopher and his father Jean in front of the new home we have constructed for their two Capuchin monkeys.

Facebook finds a home for Sofia and a big brother.

This story is a real triumph for Facebook. It shows how caring people can get together on the web to do some real good. Anna Luisa mailed me on Facebook and told me that she had a friend who had rescued a very young Howler monkey. After a some initial confusion caused by language difficulties, another Facebook member and member of the Simian Samaritans group, Gabriela, contacted, Corina who had actually saved the monkey.
We knew of a family in San Jose del Los Altos who have an adult Howler Monkey in their Pozo Suruapo, a wonderful get away place in the mountains near Caracas. The family wanted a young female to be a companion to Teodoro the adult Howler male. They collected the girl monkey from Corina. I know the family, Natacha and German well. They are loving and caring people who have experience of many years caring for Teodoro their monkey. This is a good home for the little girl. The most interesting thing is that all the participants of this rescue are Facebook members and this rescue could not have happened if it were not for Facebook. Well done everyone. Our picture of course is Teodoro with little Sofia looking up admiringly into his eyes.

Dogs and Dog biscuits.

Howler monkeys, in the wild, spend about 15 hours a day sleeping. The rest of the time they are eating. Our monkeys rise at dawn and give their thunderous territorial song. They have a set breakfast and dinner time, when food is provided. They do not have to spend time foraging for food whilst their kin in the forest spend most of their waking hours eating and searching for food. Our children sleep for an hour mid day. The rest of the day, they sunbathe or play wild games chasing each other. Jumping in the hammock and racing around the bamboo walkway. They retire at about five in the evening. Wild howlers are not known to interact with other animals. The Howler in semi captivity might almost be different animal. Our picture shows Marco playing with a puppy. His wife, Emma is also there but slightly out of focus.
In semi captivity, howlers learn a whole new group of activities. Their innate drives are still evident but modified by the contact with humans. We see them at play on swings. We see them cleaning their teeth with a tooth brush.
They are careful but adventurous. For example they will test a new food by touching it with their tongue. They have a built in Gas Chromatograph with which they can tell good to eat. For example they will do this before devouring a dog biscuit, making happy noises as they do so. All our monkeys love dog biscuits.

Construction day four.

As you see from our photograph, we are nearing completion of the enclosure. The owners asked me to make it beautiful for their children and I decided that we would make it colorful for them. Each of the metal struts is a different color. If the weather allows we should have completed the painting tomorrow. The cementing of the ground blocks that will hold the containing wire will be completed and that will leave only the double doors and and wire to be completed.

The internal furnishing has yet to be thought out and I am hoping the owners will make some suggestions like ropes, hammock, bamboo walkways and of course a covered eating place and a house. This is the last construction photo I will publish. The next picture will be of the completed dwelling.

Construction day three.

The third day of work on the new enclosure has been hampered by heavy rain and power cuts. Cement doesn't harden well in the rain and you need electricity to weld. In spite of these setbacks, some progress was made. All the upright posts are in place and the posts for the double front gate are positioned. If the weather is with us, we expect a lot more progress tomorrow. Our picture shows the uprights have been cemented in and the enclosure begins to take shape.I think it is going to be a happy home.

Did you forget?

This month has been a particularly expensive month for us at Canaote. Two of our monkeys got into a fight and that caused an outrageous veterinary bill. Tutti got infected with parasites and that added to the clinical bills both for treatment and medicines. Both animals have recovered completely. There has been an increase in the salaries of our care staff. But it does show how delicate our finances are. We care for a lot of monkeys and our own resources are not sufficient to cover everything we need. Owners have encouraged me to take their children with promises of regular donations. When these donations do not arrive, we have a crisis. This month for some reason, donations have been very light. If you have a monkeys here please help us. We have accepted your responsibly of lifetime care. Now please accept your responsibility to us.

No room at the Inn?

As the months go by, the pressure on me to accept more monkeys seems to be increasing. This month I was asked to accept two beautiful capuchin monkeys. I told the enquirer that although I had the love and the space, I did not have either the cages or the money to accept more. The capuchin owner immediately volunteered to pay for the construction of a new large enclosure. The money arrived and the materials have been bought and are on site. This Monday a skilled welder will begin the construction. I will bring you photographs as the work proceeds. I must admit that the cost of the skilled welder was a shock. Indeed the cost of materials was about three times what it had previously cost. As you know my main purpose is the care of Howler monkeys. When ARFA Hidra was unable to accept monkeys, I volunteered to accept up to five. This will bring our number to seven. When I see their confused, frightened faces I just cannot say, ‘no room at the inn’.

Our picture shows the wooded edge of the forest site we will use to construct the new enclosure.

E

The great lettuce free for all.

Our supermarkets in the smaller towns are full of bottles and tins and packets of foods, much of it imported. In or near the big towns like Caracas and Valencia, you will find in the markets, large areas of open fridges containing frozen fish, peas, mixed vegetables, smoke salmon (my favorite, just in case you are passing through). One day maybe you will even find frozen T.V dinners. But at this moment, locally, we have a fine new vegetable market with a bank of eight big top loaded fridges, full of packeted frozen fruit pulp. Not that it benefits the store because of my sampling I found most of it bad. How much more useful it would have been if it had contained smoked salmon or TV dinners. But I digress. The fact is that this is a most excellent store. The owner has set a standard. He vows that all his produce (he sells fresh fruit and all kinds of vegetables) will be only of the highest quality. No potatoes with shovel marks or cauliflower with black centers. No cabbages with yellow leaves and the point of my story, only the freshest of crisp lettuce. The lettuces are cleaned almost down to the heart. This results in a great pile of good quality, human edible lettuce leaves. The owner happened to discover my work with monkeys and offered these leaves, free of charge at anytime I wish to collect them. This is of course a great piece of good news. We buy many lettuces every week to supplement the leaves that we bring in from the forest. This is going to be a good saving in our weekly monkey food budget. I came home today with two very large sacks of lettuce leaves. We washed and distributed a good portion of it and as you can imagine the children went crazy for it. We have been promised a weekly supply by the market and we are very happy to receive it. Our picture, showing Lucio, Monito and Jaco, and a big pile of lettuce, the picture is not our usual standard but we had to be quick before all the lettuce disappeared. This scene was repeated in all our enclosures. Nothing could be heard above the steady munching of crisp lettuce leaves.

Roquacita loves fruit juice.

I have not posted for a few days. It has not been possible to take a camera into the compound as a result of the heavy rains. Today it is bright and cheerful and the first thing I saw was Roquacita (in my picture). Roquacita's enclosure adjoins our house and is partly in the corridor in front of my window. It is a large area with ropes and a hammock. However she spends most of her day in the open, where she has a view of all the other monkeys. She loves food and when I enter her space, she comes to her table to see what has been brought. She particularly likes the bowl of fruit juice which I take her from my own breakfast. We have been slow to become friends. She does not like being touched. When it was became clear that I respected this, She started coming quite close to me and does not back away. In her outside garden she has an extensive bamboo walkway and two live trees to sit in.

Roquacita ama el jugo de fruta.

No he publicado durante unos días.

All things bright and beautiful.

Here at Cañaote we are ever aware of our responsibility to care for God’s children. This is the reason for our endeavors. We try to serve him through our work with the monkeys in our care. We often think of Saint Francis who recognized that all creatures were made by God and that they have a place reserved here on earth and in the life to come. We give praise to God and thank him for the help and wisdom given to us by his servant Saint Francis.

I love the Hymn, ‘All things bright and beautiful’. I often sing it when I am with the children. Here are the words. You can find the music on the net.

All things bright and beautiful,
all creatures great and small,
all things wise and wonderful,
the Lord God made them all.

Each little flower that opens,
each little bird that sings,
he made their glowing colors,
he made their tiny wings. Refrain

The purple-headed mountain,
the river running by,
the sunset, and the morning
that brightens up the sky. Refrain

The cold wind in the winter,
the pleasant summer sun,
the ripe fruits in the garden,
he made them every one. Refrain

He gave us eyes to see them,
and lips that we might tell
how great is God Almighty,
who has made all things well. Refrain

Abstenerse

La montaña púrpura de cabeza,
el río corriendo,
la puesta del sol, y la mañana
que brilla en el cielo. Abstenerse

El viento frío en el invierno,
el sol del verano agradable,
los frutos maduros en el jardín,
que hizo a cada uno. Abstenerse

Él nos dio ojos para ver,
y los labios para que podamos decir
cuán grande es Dios Todopoderoso,
que ha hecho todas las cosas bien. Abstenerse.

Emma and Marco.

We thank Gabriela for these wonderful photographs of Emma and Marco (left). Just recently Gabriela's picture of Emma appeared on Facebook and Emma received many compliments. Both these children spent their early lives at Canaote. Emma's history goes even further back to the ARFA facility at Hidra. We have some video of her at ARFA as a tiny tot. But amazingly you would be in no doubt that it is her. Her face always looks sad but in fact she is a comic with a serious face and that is the best way I can describe her. She moved from Canaote to Manrique when Marco was in severe depression at the loss of his wife, Vicky. The story is told elsewhere on the blog but suffice it to say that her wonderful love and her strong character soon won him over and now they are the perfect pair. Always together, Marco also lived at Canaote when he was small. He was no bigger than the fist of my hand. He was nurtured by Sussy whose picture you can see at the top of the left hand column.

Emma y Marco.

Please put a penny in the old mans hat.

Please put a penny in the old mans hat. If you haven't got a penny a ha'penny will do. If you don't have a ha'penny God bless you.

Things are rather tight financially at Canaote. The International economic downturn is hitting us hard. The pound against the dollar has dropped from two dollars to the pound to under one and a half. My meager U.K pension is stretched as far as I can. We have no other income. Our local inflation here in Venezuela is running at an all time high. Obviously this affects the price of food for the children as well as ourselves. We have now twenty children to feed. Our work has never been more needed. People are leaving Venezuela. Some are abandoning their animals to the street. This includes Monkeys and we already have several for that reason. If you wish you can make a contribution to our work. There is a PayPal button alongside our blog. Click that and you will be taken to your PayPal account where you can make a donation.

Cleaning up.

As a howler monkey gets older and in particular if he is an alpha, there is a high probability that he will become very territorial and aggressive. This presents a problem for staff who are responsible for important work inside the enclosures. It is necessary for the enclosures to be cleaned every day. In addition the enclosures must be entered for the delivery of food and the collection of empty plates. We have considered many solutions to this problem. Finally we decided that a high pressure hose would be helpful. Howlers do not like getting wet. The mere presence of the water jet is enough to send even the most alpha howler to the other end of the enclosure. Naturally great care is used in hosing. This jet is very powerful and could possibly injure a monkey. The jet has been very successful. Even in the mango season when the ground inside the garden is covered in ripe mangoes, cleaning has been excellent. Our picture shows Rafael, one of our helpers using the jet.

A visit to Ramona in Tinaco.

Ramona is a adult female howler monkey who lives with her human family in Tinaco, the nearest town to our compound. As you can see from the photograph, she is in good health. You see her enjoying a bunch of forest leaves freshly collected by us for her this morning. In particular, you can see her coat is in fine condition.
She is well cared for and much loved by her family. We have visited her for some years. Her accommodation has been greatly improved during that time. Formerly she was chained to a tree in the street, where she was a danger to people passing. She now has her own tree away from the street behind the family shop. Her tree is covered in healthy leaves but all monkeys like to have a change of leaf diet. She gets very exited when she sees me. Jumping on my shoulder as a greeting and showing that she remembers the man who brings her leaves. She shares the family home at night.
Her chain is a little on the short side. Perhaps the owners could invest in a new one.

Video of butterflies attracted by Delonix regia at Canaote

Nothing is quite as striking as the royal Poinciana (Delonix regia) in bloom. Trees produce a massive canopy of red/orange flowers in springtime through summer. Trees can obtain a height of 40 feet. When the golden shower (Cassia fistula) blooms, the tree fills with a mass of bright red and yellow flowers, which also attract butterflies. In this short video you can see a swarm of yellow butterflies.

This Delonix regia is at the entrance to Canaote although there are several on the property. The tree a native of Madagascar, was not planted by human hands. The gardener is a mystery. Birds perhaps.

One of the most beautiful trees in the world!

Canaote is also a Botanic Garden and we have many special delights in their season. The most dramatic sight at this time is the Delonix Regia. A deciduous tropical tree with fern-like leaves, that is considered one of the most beautiful trees in the world! One of it's thrilling features is it's attractiveness to butterflies. Our picture shows the Delonix in full sunlight with a swarm of white butterflies.

Schatov loves Sophie.

The truth is that Schatov is Sophie's second husband. Toto her former spouse released himself into the forest. She was alone for some time. She was not interested in the attentions of other monkeys, although we tried introductions. Finally Schatov persistently escaped from his enclosure and made his way across the canopy to her. He would sit for hours above her garden. She played hard to get and did not instantly accept his overtures. We open the door to the enclosure and Schatov hopped in. Since then they have been inseparable. They are a truly happy pair and we hope that one day they will have a child.

Schatov ama a Sophie.
