Getting accustomed to a new home, different friends and a totally different environment can be difficult even for humans. How much more difficult it must be for a monkey. With a human you can explain, but a monkey will just observed the changes around it and wonder what it all means. Unfortunately at Canaote we have experienced this bewilderment many times and therefore we have at least some idea how to make it easier for the monkey. We try to give the monkey familiar things like blankets, dolls and a hammocks. We try to mimic at least in part the diet. But above all we make sure that the child knows that he/she is loved and respected.
Quite often the experience for the monkey is overwhelming. This maybe the first time they have seen other monkeys. There are not many wild animals in a Caracas living room. Can you imagine the monkeys reaction when he first hears other howler monkeys roar. In his Valencia apartment he must often have wondered why he felt the need to make such a loud noise.

Over the next weeks we will be working hard to earn Lorenzo and Nineta's affection. We have already given them hammocks and rings and ropes to play with. We have been told that at home in Puerto La Cruz, they spent much of their time high in the trees. We are designing a new kind of enclosure for them. All our enclosures have large live trees but are no more than 4 meters in height. This new enclosure will be high rather than long. Our work here at Canaote is unique in several ways. Firstly we are the only Rescue Centre for abandoned, maltreated or homeless Howler monkeys. WE have also accepted monkeys that, for one reason or another, can no longer be care for in human homes.

We also care for the former owners. We know how heartbreaking it is to part with a special friend. We give support and understanding to all those who have brought their children to us.

Familiarizarse con un nuevo hogar, amigos diferentes y un ambiente totalmente diferente puede ser difícil incluso para los seres humanos. ¿Cuánto más difícil debe ser para un mono. Con un ser humano se puede explicar, pero un mono solo observan los cambios a su alrededor y se preguntan qué significa todo esto. Desafortunadamente en Cañaote que hemos vivido este desconcierto muchas veces y por lo tanto, tenemos por lo menos alguna idea de cómo hacer más fácil la adaptación para el mono. Tratamos de dar al mono cosas familiares como mantas, muñecos y hamacas. Intentamos imitar al menos en parte la dieta. Pero, sobre todo, nos aseguramos de que el niño sepa que él / ella es amado y respetado.
Muy a menudo la experiencia para el mono es abrumadora. No hay muchos animales salvajes en una sala de estar de Caracas. ¿Puede usted imaginar la reacción de los monos cuando oyen por primera vez el rugido aullador de otros monos.
Durante las próximas semanas vamos a trabajar duro para ganar a Lorenzo y el afecto de Nineta. Ya hemos colocado las hamacas, los anillos y cuerdas para jugar. Nos han dicho que en su casa en Puerto La Cruz, ellos pasaban gran parte de su tiempo en lo alto de los árboles. Estamos diseñando un nuevo tipo de alojamiento para ellos. Todos nuestros recintos cuentan con grandes árboles vivos, pero con no más de 4 metros de altura. Este nuevo recinto será elevado más que largo. Sabemos lo doloroso que es separarse de un amigo especial. Damos apoyo y comprensión a todos los que han traído sus hijos a nosotros.

Lorenzo and Nineta love hammocks.They have a small one under the roof and this larger one at the far end of their enclosure. They use the small one at night to sleep and the one in the picture to laze through the afternoon.

On Friday afternoon last, Lorenzo and Nineta joined the family at Canaote.  They arrived with members of their human family in the late morning. They had traveled from Puerto La Cruz in the early hours of the morning to be with us. The family wanted to be with the children as long as possible to be sure that they settled down happily and in fact stayed overnight. Laura stayed the following day also to help with the business of getting the children acclimatized. The settling down has been very eventful. The enclosure was much weaker than we had supposed and Nineta repeatedly found holes and weak spots in the wire. Fortunately Laura and her mother Gloria were here and Nineta quickly went to her only to find another weak spot when she was returned to the enclosure. Finally we managed to contain them both. The following morning, when we had staff, we were able to make permanent the temporary repairs and we are now reasonably confident that the enclosure is secure. Over the years, I have rarely seen Howler monkeys so attached to their human family.

Elsewhere in the blog I told their story. Lorenzo is 5 years old and Nineta is 3 years. Their birthday is known to Laura and I will ask her to confirm it for me.
The family rescued these children when they were both very young and for all these years they have been free in the trees around Gloria's house. Their home was in a fairly remote area. Unfortunately, neighbors arrived. These people have been unfriendly to the monkeys, On one occasion they blinded Lorenzo in one eye with a stone and another time damaged his hand with a machete. There are numerous tales of attacks by these people on the monkeys.
Laura approached me to ask if we could give the monkeys a safe home. We agreed and now we will start building a new life for these young people.
We really did not have a suitable enclosure. We are making do with a temporary location which is good but not ideal. We wish to construct a special enclosure for them. They are used to spending their days in the trees. I want to build an enclosure for them which is vertical rather than the long horizontal that we usually construct. This would then incorporate a large mango tree. Only one thing is holding back the construction and that is the money to buy the materials. The family are doing their part. Lorenzo y Nineta llegaron

El viernes pasado Lorenzo y Nineta se unieron a la familia de Cañaote. Llegaron con los miembros de su familia humana al final de la mañana. Habían viajado desde Puerto La Cruz, en las primeras horas de la madrugada para estar con nosotros. La familia quería estar con los niños el mayor tiempo posible para asegurarse de que se establecieran con alegría y, de hecho, pasaron la noche aquí. Laura se quedó al día siguiente también para ayudar a que los niños se aclimataran mejor. El recinto era mucho más débil de lo que suponíamos, y Nineta en repetidas ocasiones consiguió los agujeros y puntos débiles en el alambre. Afortunadamente, Laura y su madre Gloria estaban aquí y Nineta fue rápidamente a ella sólo para encontrar otro punto débil, cuando fue devuelta a la jaula. Finalmente se logró contener a los dos. A la mañana siguiente, cuando llego el personal, hemos sido capaces de hacer permanente las reparaciones temporales y ahora estamos razonablemente seguros de que el recinto es seguro. Con los años, rara vez he visto monos aulladores tan apegado a su familia humana.
En el  blog he contado su historia con anterioridad. Lorenzo tiene 5 años de edad y Nineta 3 años. Sus fechas de cumpleaños las conoce  Laura y yo le he pido que me informe.
La familia rescató a estos niños cuando eran muy jóvenes y durante todos estos años han vivido libres en los árboles alrededor de la casa de Gloria. Su casa estaba en una zona bastante remota. Por desgracia, los vecinos fueron llegando. Estas personas han sido hostiles con los monos, En una ocasión Lorenzo quedo ciego de un ojo por una pedrada  y en otra oportunidad dañaron su mano con un machete. Hay numerosos cuentos de ataques por parte de estas personas a los monos.
Laura se me acercó para preguntarme si podríamos dar a los monos  un hogar (recinto) más seguro. Nos pusimos de acuerdo y ahora vamos a empezar a construir una nueva jaula para estos jóvenes.
En realidad no tienen un recinto adecuado. Estamos en una ubicación temporal que es bueno pero no es ideal. Queremos construir un adjunto especial para ellos. Se puede utilizar para pasar sus días en los árboles. Quiero construir un recinto para ellos, que sea vertical en lugar de  horizontal largo que son por lo general las construcciones. Con esto entonces podemos incorporar un árbol de mango de gran tamaño. Sólo una cosa son las ganas de la construcción entera y otra la disposición del dinero para comprar los materiales. Jake on his birthday

Today is Jake's birthday

You will remember that Jake, a very young Howler monkey,was discovered in Merida. He was dirty and covered in his own faeces. He had been kept in a small chicken cage which had not been cleaned since the chickens vacated it. The owners had literally discarded the little monkey as being of no interest and no value.

Well today is his birthday. At Canaote we calculate the birthday from the day that they arrive here. Clearly it is rarely possible to tell the actual date of birth of an animal born in the forest. Maybe sometimes an educated guess for the older arrivals. But the younger ones start from when they began their new life here. So it was exactly one year ago that the tiny Jake arrived here with his savior. Since that time we have seen him grow in months as well as character. Character? Yes he has plenty of that. He is boisterous and athletic with a great appetite. No doubt he is going to be a big monkey. He is already the leader of his small group. I attach a new photograph taken this morning to celebrate his birthday. Happy birthday Jake.

Ustedes recordarán a Jake, el es un mono aullador muy joven, fue descubierto en Mérida. Estaba sucio y cubierto por sus propias heces. A él lo habían mantenido en una jaula pequeña de pájaros que nunca habían limpiado desde que el pájaro la uso. Los dueños habían desechado, literalmente al pequeño mono como si no tuviera ningún valor.

Pues bien, hoy es su cumpleaños. En Cañaote se calcula el cumpleaños por el día en que llegan aquí. Es evidente que rara vez es posible determinar la fecha real de nacimiento de un animal nacido en el bosque. Quizás a veces una conjetura para los recién llegados mayores. Pero los más jóvenes comienzan desde el momento en que comenzó su nueva vida aquí. Así que fue hace exactamente un año que el pequeño Jake llegó aquí con su salvador. Desde entonces lo hemos visto crecer en estos meses, así como su carácter. ¿Es un Personaje? Sí, él tiene un montón de eso. Es ruidoso y atlético, con un gran apetito. No hay duda de que va a ser un gran mono. Él ya es el líder de su grupo pequeño. Adjunto una nueva fotografía tomada esta mañana para celebrar su cumpleaños. Jake Feliz cumpleaños.

Toula's birthday

Our cute and very pretty girl Capuchin monkey Toula, celebrated her second birthday at Canaote today. She is about nine years old. Her human mother, who is on an engineering university course in Indonesia, called to wish her 'Happy Birthday'. We celebrated with her.  Earlier in the day, as soon as we realised that it was her birthday, we bought her a cake. She shared this with her pal Oliver, although I think she got most of it. Usually I take these pictures from inside the enclosure with no wires showing but on this occasion the sky was clouding over and I was worried that we would have enough light for a good picture. Nevertheless you can see that mischievous grin with the tongue poking out tentative to a little more fun.

Feliz Cumpleaños Toula.

 Nuestra linda y muy bonita niña  capuchino Toula, está celebrando hoy su segundo cumpleaños en Cañaote.

Ella tiene unos nueve años de edad. Su madre humana, que está en un curso de ingeniería en la Universidad de Indonesia, llamó para desearle "feliz cumpleaños". Celebramos con ella. Temprano en el día, tan pronto como nos dimos cuenta de que era su cumpleaños, le compramos un pastel. Ella compartió con su amigo Oliver, aunque creo que ella consiguió la mayor parte del pastel. Por lo general yo tomo estas fotos desde el interior del recinto sin alambres de por medio, pero en esta ocasión el cielo se nubló y me preocupaba que no íbamos a tener la luz suficiente para una buena imagen. Sin embargo se puede ver esa sonrisa pícara con la lengua afuera,  para ser un poco más divertida.

Barnaby a young Adult Howler Monkey seen here marking out his domain. Howlers are territorial and avoid warfare with their neighbors. They do this by giving warning that this area is occupied. It is not generally known that they have a enzyme in their spital. This is deposited on the beard which then becomes a very useful paint brush to paint their mark on the trees in their domain. It is generally supposed that Howlers establish their territorial right with the loud call. In fact this call is the loudest animal noise in the forest. But my clip shows that in addition to calling, the Howler marks out territory. I have done a careful search and have not been able to find a reference in the literature to this behaviour. I have appended a typical quotation form the literature which supports my opinion. We still know so little about our neighbours in the forest
You will notice that Barnaby has an attractive light coloured coat.  There is no explanation that I know of for this. Compare for example his colouring to Marie Teresa who appears late in the clip.

'Thus the howler possesses no wolflike equipment for marking the boundaries of his preserve. But he has something else. As his name implies, he has come into possession of a voice box to humiliate an air-raid siren. At dawn the howler will deafen the awakening forest in a cry raised in unison with the fellows of his clan. Every other clan for a mile or so about is put on warning as to the home clan's whereabouts. Should two such groups in the course of the day's wanderings meet at some point where unmarkable boundaries are vague, then all argument will be settled by out-howling. Again, a body structure has evolved through its selective advantage to a form of behaviour.'

Barnaby marcando su territorio.

Barnaby es un Mono Aullador adulto joven que como se ve en la foto esta marcando su dominio. Los aulladores son territoriales y evitan la guerra con sus vecinos. Ellos hacen esto para dar aviso de que esta área está ocupada. No se sabe, que ellos tienen una enzima en su barbilla. Esta se deposita sobre la barba que luego se convierte como en un cepillo de pintura muy útil para pintar su marca en los árboles de su dominio. En general, se supone que los  Aulladores establecen su derecho territorial con el aullido de voz alta. De hecho, esta convocatoria es el ruido más fuerte de los animales en el bosque. Pero mi video muestra que, además de la vocalización, el aullador marca el territorio también. He hecho una búsqueda cuidadosa y no he sido capaz de encontrar una referencia en la literatura para este comportamiento. He añadido un formulario de cotización típica de la literatura que apoya mi opinión. Todavía sabemos muy poco acerca de nuestros vecinos en el bosque
Usted se dará cuenta de que Barnaby tiene un atractivo pelaje de color claro. No hay una explicación para las tonalidades de pelo, que yo sepa. Compararen por ejemplo, su colorido con el de  María Teresa que aparece al final del blog.

 'Al amanecer, el mono aullador  despierta con un aullido que se eleva al unísono con los compañeros de su clan. Cada clan al otro, y así por un kilómetro y medio aproximadamente se pone en alerta sobre el paradero del clan de origen. En caso de que dos de estos grupos en el curso de las andanzas del día se encuentren en algún punto donde los límites son vagos y no marcados, a continuación, todo será resuelto aullando.'

A serious appeal

Sadly it has been a very difficult Christmas and New Year time for us at Cañaote. Many of you have been involved with your families and many have been travelling to be with family and dear ones. I quite understand this.  But our responsibility to care for our monkeys does not stop at Christmas. The children still need three good meals a day. They need their plates washing after meals and the enclosures have to be cleaned and disinfected every day. Monkeys are messy eaters.

It goes without saying that, staff have to be paid and the special Christmas payments are now very heavy.
Inflation seems to climb ever upward and the weekly budget for the monkey's food now exceeds one and a half mil per week. My slim pension from the British Government has not increase by one bolivar in the seventeen years that I have been here. This pension pays all the bills, there is no other income.

I seem to be spending more and more of my time, writing to people, asking for donations or contributions to help with this work. Sometimes I feel that many of my monkeys have been abandoned here. I suppose it is all part of the task or mission that has been set for me but I would rather spend my time caring for the monkeys rather than writing letters like this one.

Lamentablemente ha sido muy difícil la época de Navidad y  Año Nuevo para nosotros en Cañaote. Muchos de ustedes han compartido con sus familias y muchos han viajado para estar con ella. Yo entiendo muy bien esto. Sin embargo, nuestra responsabilidad de cuidar de nuestros monos no se detiene en Navidad. Los niños todavía necesitan tres buenas comidas al día. Necesitan el aseo de los platos después de las comidas y los recintos tienen que ser lavados y desinfectados todos los días. Los monos son muy desordenados y ensucian mucho cuando comen.

Al personal que labora aquí, hay que cancelarles sus prestaciones sociales y aguinaldos navideños. La inflación cada día es más alta y el presupuesto semanal para la comida de los monos ahora supera los dos millones y medio por semana. Mi pensión del Gobierno británico es pequeña y no ha aumentado en un bolívar en los diecisiete años que he estado aquí. Esta pensión paga todas las facturas, no hay otros ingresos.

Parece que estoy gastando más y más de mi tiempo, al escribir a la gente, pidiendo donaciones o contribuciones para ayudar con este trabajo. A veces siento que muchos de mis monos han sido abandonados. Supongo que todo es parte de la tarea o misión que se ha creado para mí, pero yo prefiero gastar mí tiempo cuidando a los monos en vez de escribir cartas como ésta.

You will recall that Nikki was born at Cañaote now nine months ago. Her parents, papa Lucio and Mama Jaco, are very loving and caring of the little girl. In spite of Jaco complaining, Nikki can still exit the enclosure by wriggling through the wire. This is a surprise because she loves her food and eats a lot. She spend much of her day in the mango trees surrounding her home. There she meets Silvia, the wild female. Nikki is very friendly and loves to take gifts of banana from my hand. She often shares this with Silvia. But more about Silvia in another post. My picture shows Nikki on the outside of her enclosure.

Nikki a los nueve meses.

Usted recordará que Nikki nació en Cañaote ahora tiene nueve meses. Sus padres, papá Lucio y mamá Jaco, son muy cariñosos y atentos con la niña. A pesar de que  Jaco se moleste, Nikki todavía se puede salir del recinto por los huecos del alambre. Esto es una sorpresa porque le encanta la comida y come mucho. Se pasa la mayor parte de su tiempo en los árboles de mango que rodean su recinto. Allí conoció a Silvia, la mona salvaje. Nikki es muy amable y le gusta tomar  regalos de plátano de mi mano. A menudo comparte esto con Silvia. Les colocare una foto de Silvia en otro post. Mi foto muestra a Nikki en el exterior de su recinto.

Teodoro and Sofia at Pozo Suruapo

Teodoro and Sofia are two Araguato monkeys that are cared for by two of our close friends. I have introduced these two monkeys to you before. But recently I received some new photographs and I want to share those pictures with you. Since I saw Teodoro last, his beard has become luxuriant and his coat has a sheen that only comes with good health. Teodoro has been with his human family since he was small. Now he shares with Sofia and it has made his life more complete. Our first picture shows Teodoro, the big one and the other two are of Sofia his surrogate sister. How she has grown since we last showed you photographs of these two. They live at Pozo Suruapo, which is at San Jose de los Altos in the mountains near Caracas. We have told their story previously on the blog but is good to see how well they have got used to each other. Natacha and German, the owners of the Pozo have built a wonderful enclosure for the two friends which is large and overlook the mountains but is completely safe for the monkeys. Teodoro and Sofia play together all day with the beautiful backdrop of the mountains. I have stayed at the Pozo Suruapo and sampled their hospitality. A great place for a short break, a wedding or a place to get away from it all. And of course a very comfortable home for Teodoro and Sofia.

Teodoro y Sofía son dos monos araguatos que son atendidos por dos de nuestros amigos más cercanos. He presentado estos dos monos antes. Sin embargo, recientemente he recibido algunas fotos nuevas y quiero compartirlas con usted. Desde la última vez que vi a Teodoro, su barba se ha convertido en exuberante y su pelo tiene un brillo que sólo viene de una buena salud. Teodoro ha estado con su familia humana, desde que era pequeño. Ahora comparte con Sofía y ella ha hecho su vida más completa. Nuestra primera imagen muestra a Teodoro, el grande y las otras dos son de Sofía, su hermana de crianza. ¡Cómo ha crecido desde la última vez que les mostré unas fotografías de ellos dos. Ellos viven en Pozo Suruapo, que se encuentra en San José de los Altos, en las montañas cerca de Caracas. Hemos contado su historia con anterioridad en el blog, pero es bueno ver lo bien que se han acostumbrado el uno al otro. Natacha y alemán, los propietarios de Pozo Suruapo han construido un recinto maravilloso para los dos amigos, que es grande y con vista a las montañas, pero es completamente seguro para los monos. Teodoro y Sofía juegan juntos todo el día con el hermoso telón de fondo de las montañas. Me he alojado en el Pozo Suruapo y la hospitalidad es insuperable. Un gran lugar para un breve descanso, una boda o un lugar para alejarse de todo. Y, por supuesto, una casa muy cómoda para Teodoro y Sofía.

I have posted before about the contribution that our arboretum makes to the welfare of our monkeys. Our pictures today show the ingredients of this mornings breakfast. Mandarin oranges, Bananas, Star Fruit, Papaya, Bacu Pari and surprise Chinese long beans. This last item is very popular. The monkeys literally fight to get them. The Araguato monkeys  (Howler) eat them whole, they chomp away and seemingly there is no end to their appetite for them. On the other hand the Capuchin monkeys carefully remove the seeds and discard the skin. The vegetable grows extremely well in the Venezuelan climate and I am puzzled why it is not more popular. I have never seen it in the stores.  We of course grow our own.

They are a good source of protein, vitamin A, thiamin, riboflavin, iron, phosphorus, and potassium, and a very good source for vitamin C, folate, magnesium, and manganese.

In a serving size of 100 grams of yardlong beans there are 47 calories, 0 grams of total fat, 0 mg cholesterol, 4 mg sodium (0% daily value), 8 grams of total carbohydrates (2% daily value), and 3 grams of protein (5% daily value). There is also 17% DV vitamin A, 2% DV iron, 31% DV vitamin C, and 5% DV calcium. (Percent daily values are based on a 2000 calorie diet. Individual daily values may be higher or lower depending on individual calorie needs.)

Nos autoabastecemos.


He publicado antes sobre la contribución que hace nuestro jardín botánico por el bienestar de nuestros monos. Nuestras imágenes muestran hoy los ingredientes del desayuno de esta mañana. Mandarinas, plátanos, carambolas, papayas, Bacu Pari y sorprende con los largos vainitas chinas. Este último es muy popular. Los monos, literalmente luchan para conseguirlos. Los monos araguatos (aulladores) comen todo,  les encanta lo crujiente y al parecer no hay un final a su apetito por ellos. Por otro lado los monos capuchinos cuidadosamente retire las semillas y desechar la piel. La verdura crece muy bien en el clima de Venezuela y estoy sorprendido que no sea más popular en este país. Nunca lo he visto en las tiendas. Nosotros, por supuesto,  tenemos nuestra propia cosecha.

Son una buena fuente de proteínas, vitamina A, tiamina, riboflavina, hierro, fósforo y potasio, y una muy buena fuente de vitamina C, fosfato, magnesio y manganeso.

En una porción de 100 gramos de vainitas yardlong hay 47 calorías, 0 gramos de grasa total, 0 mg de colesterol, 4 mg de sodio (0% del valor diario), 8 gramos de hidratos de carbono total (2% del valor diario), y 3 gramos de proteínas (5% del valor diario). Navidad en Cañaote

Sin duda, la Navidad es un tiempo costoso para todo el mundo y este año con una inflación en su punto más alto, la situación es peor. En Cañaote la situación es particularmente difícil. El aumento de los pagos anuales para el personal y los precios inflados de los alimentos de los monos, me preocupa pensando,  cómo llegar a fin de mes. Este mes hemos aceptado dos monos más y hemos recibido varias solicitudes de un hogar para otros monos. En los 15 años que llevamos trabajando con monos no deseados o abusados, nunca había sido más necesario nuestro trabajo, como en estos momentos.
Mis finanzas son muy débiles. Sólo tengo mi pequeña pensión británica y  no ha aumentado en todo el tiempo que he estado aquí.
Por favor, si puede, haga una donación en esta Navidad. No se lo pediríamos si no lo necesitáramos. No me gusta pedir, pero por los niños me dejo mi orgullo.

Les deseo a todos una Navidad tranquila y segura.
Nosotros, por supuesto, estaremos con los monos. Como siempre al cuidado de su felicidad y bienestar.

No doubt, Christmas is an expensive time for everyone and this year with inflation running at an all time high, the situation is worse. At Cañaote the situation is particularly difficult. The increase in the annual payments to staff and the inflated price of the monkeys food, has left me worrying about how to get through the month. This month we have accepted two more monkeys and have received several more requests for a home. Never in the 15 years that I have worked with unwanted or abused monkeys has my work been more needed.
My finances are very slender. I only have my small British pension and this has not increased in  all the time I have been here.
Please if you can, make a donation this Christmas. I would not ask if we did not need it. I hate to beg but for the children I sink my pride.

Feliz cumpleaños Marco.

Marco tiene 9 años de edad. Su historia se puede encontrar buscando en este blog. Sin embargo les narro brevemente, él vivió sus primeros años de niño en Cañaote y fue criado por Sussy, con ella se convirtió en la adolescente. Finalmente se fue a vivir con Gabriela, donde vive ahora con su esposa Emma. Ellos son una pareja perfecta y él la adora. Busquen en el blog  ​​su historia. Es muy interesante.

Schatov and his wife Sophie

Here are some pictures of Schatov and his wife Sophie. Schatov is the biggest of the male Araguatoes at Cañaote. These were taken this morning. I know he looks big and a bit dangerous. But beneath all that hair and that magnificent beard he is still a very nice well tempered monkey. He loves my visits. He sits on my lap and asks for a massage. He is a very proud individual. If I miss a visit, he will sit with his back to me until he thinks I have been punished enough and then he will come to me. Sophie is the perfect adoring wife. She is never more than a few meters away from him. Today we are replacing some of his big bamboo walkways. These are about 20 meters long. They deteriorate in the heavy rains and have to be replaced.  He spends his day mainly in his garden. He has hoops (actually, gaily painted bicycle wheels with the spokes removed). He has a couple of hammocks and a swing and of course very extensive bamboo walkways. The table you see is where I sit when I visit him. After I have left he like to sit in my chair. I don't know what that means, he will tell me one day. He is very active and in very good health. Schatov s history is elsewhere on the bog and you can search for it.

Schatov y su esposa Sophie

Aquí están algunas fotos de Schatov y su esposa Sophie. Schatov es el mayor de los Araguatos masculinos en Cañaote. Estas fotos fueron tomadas esta mañana. Yo sé que él se ve grande y un poco peligroso. Pero debajo de todo ese pelo y esa barba magnífica sigue siendo un mono muy agradable y templado. Él ama mis visitas. Él se sienta en mi regazo y  pide un masaje. Él es una persona muy orgullosa. Si me olvido de una visita, se sentará dándome la espalda hasta que él crea que he sido suficientemente castigado y luego vendrá a mí. Sophie es la esposa adorada perfecta. Ella nunca se aleja de él. Hoy estamos reemplazando algunos de sus caminos de bambú grandes. Son unos 20 metros de largo cada uno. Se deterioran con las fuertes lluvias y tienen que ser reemplazados. Él pasa el día, principalmente en su jardín. Hay aros (en realidad ruedas de bicicleta con los radios eliminados, pintados con colores alegres). Él tiene un par de hamacas, un columpio y los pasillos de bambú, por supuesto, en un área  muy amplia. La mesa que se ve es donde me siento cuando los visito. Después que me voy, les gusta sentarse en la silla donde yo estaba. No sé lo que eso significa, tal vez me lo va a decir algún día. Es muy activo y tiene muy buena salud. A special appeal for a very special case.

I want to make a special appeal for a very special case. About a month ago we were approached by a family. This family has been very active in rescuing monkeys and other good work amongst animals. They have at the moment two araguatoes (Howler Monkeys), a male and a female  that they rescued. Their location was remote, so the monkeys were free in the trees around their home. Recently, neighbors have moved into the area and this has presented a danger to the araguatoes. The boy has been attacked with a machete and lost the use of one hand and on another occasion they threw a stone and blinded him in one eye. At this point the family read an article about our work and decided to ask us to accept these children in our community.

Unfortunately we are full. We can only accept them if we either build a new enclosure or managed to modify a large existing one. All our enclosures are large and include living trees. We have plenty of space for new enclosures, plenty of love to make it happen but short on the funds.

We have gone with the modify option. This being the most economical yet satisfactory course. All that remains is to raise sufficient funds. The price of materials as you probably know has gone through the roof and experienced labor even more. Your donation will make it possible to go ahead and offer these two monkeys a decent and safe life. Do it and make this a special Christmas for them.

Un atractivo especial para un caso muy especial.

 Quiero hacer un llamamiento especial para un caso muy especial. Hace aproximadamente un mes se nos acercó una familia. Esta familia ha estado muy activa en el rescate de monos y otros animales. Ellos tienen en la actualidad dos Araguatos (mono aullador), un macho y una hembra que rescataron. Su ubicación era sin vecinos cerca, por lo que los monos eran libres en los árboles alrededor de su casa. Recientemente, hay vecinos se han trasladado a la zona y lo que ha ocasionado un peligro para los Araguatos. El mono macho ha sido atacado con un machete y perdió el uso de una mano y en otra ocasión le tiraron una piedra y quedo ciego de un ojo. En este punto, la familia leyó un artículo sobre nuestro trabajo y decidió pedir que acepten a estos niños en nuestra comunidad.

Desgraciadamente estamos llenos. Sólo podemos aceptar, si  construimos un nuevo recinto o  arreglamos para modificar uno ya existente de gran tamaño. Todos nuestros recintos son grandes e incluyen árboles vivos. Tenemos un montón de espacio para nuevos recintos, mucho amor para que esto ocurra, pero cortos de fondos.

Hemos decidido la opción de reparar. Esta es la opción más económica y satisfactoria. Todo lo que queda es recaudar fondos suficientes. El precio de los materiales es cada día más alto, también hay que arreglar el techo, mas la mano de obra con experiencia. Su donación hará posible que nosotros sigamos adelante y ofrecer a estos dos monos  una vida digna y segura. Y hacen de esta una Navidad especial para ellos.

Creatures great and small.

If you scan the web, you will find that many churches now are holding blessing services for pets. The usual date for this is the Sunday nearest the fourth of October, which is St. Francis of Assisi’s day. Some sites on the web give a complete liturgy and order of service for the blessing. One site describes the progress to the altar, of horses and dogs, parrots, pigs, and well why not, monkeys. This is of course controversial. Are we just blessing as we would bless the corn, or the harvest? Or are we going much further than that and saying that we recognize that animals have an immortal soul and that one day we will be together again in another place? I have read the work of some very learned theologians that define what is meant by a soul. They argue that the bible makes it clear that God created man in his own image and therefore he has an immortal soul. I am of course making the point very briefly. They argue from this that animals cannot have a soul because they were not created in the likeness of God. I consider this to be a very spacious argument. Well of course a couple of points arise. One is that I don’t find anywhere in the scriptures where it tells us that you must be created in the likeness of God to have a soul. The argument becomes even more tenuous when you realize that we, the human race are descended from Monkeys. Now there is no doubt about that one. If we have an immortal soul we inherited from our beloved friend the Ape. I say go with confidence to a service of blessing for our pets, monkeys in particular, in the sure knowledge that we will meet again in the kingdom of the hereafter.
I love the reasoning in the Fitzgerald translation of the Omar Khayyam Paragraphs 61 and 62. Where it says and I quote:

There said another, surely not in vain
My substance from the common earth was ta’en
That he who subtly wrought me into shape
Should stamp me back to common earth again.

Another said, why ne’er a peevish boy
Would break the bowl from which he’d drank in joy
Shall he that made the vessel in pure love
And fansy, in an after rage destroy?

34.9 And some of the people said, This man careth for all creatures, are they his brothers and sisters that he should love them ? And he said unto them, Verily these are your fellow creatures of the great Household of God, yea, they are your brethren and sisters, having the same breath of life in the Eternal.

34.10 And whosoever careth for one of the least of these, and giveth it to eat and drink in its need, the same doeth it unto me, and whoso willingly suffereth one of these to be in want, and defendeth it not when evilly entreated, suffereth the evil as done unto me; for as ye have done in this life, so shall it be done unto you in the life to come.

Criaturas grandes y pequeñas.
Si explora la web, usted encontrará que muchas iglesias ahora tienen los servicios de bendición para las mascotas. La fecha habitual para esto es el primer domingo de octubre, que es el día de San Francisco de Asís. Algunos sitios en la web dan una liturgia completa y el  servicio para la bendición. Un sitio describe los progresos realizados hasta el altar, de caballos y perros, loros, cerdos, etc., ¿por qué no, los monos. Esto es, por supuesto, controversial. ¿Es sólo la bendición como la del  maíz, o la cosecha? ¿O vamos mucho más allá y decir que reconocemos que los animales tienen un alma inmortal y que un día estaremos juntos de nuevo en otro lugar? He leído la obra de algunos teólogos muy preparados para definir qué se entiende por un alma. Ellos argumentan que la Biblia deja en claro que Dios creó al hombre a su imagen y por lo tanto tiene un alma inmortal. Por supuesto, estoy haciendo el punto muy brevemente. Ellos argumentan que los animales no tienen alma, porque no fueron creados a imagen de Dios. Considero que se trata de un argumento muy amplio. Bueno, por supuesto, un par de puntos a surgir. Uno de ellos es que no encuentro el lugar en las Escrituras donde se nos dice que debe ser creado a imagen de Dios para tener un alma. El argumento se vuelve aún más tenue cuando te das cuenta de que nosotros, la raza humana desciende de los monos. Ahora no hay duda sobre eso. Si tenemos un alma inmortal que hemos heredado de nuestro querido amigo el mono. Yo digo acude con confianza a un servicio de bendición para nuestras mascotas, los monos, en particular, con la certeza de que nos reuniremos de nuevo en el reino del más allá.
Me encanta el razonamiento en la traducción de Fitzgerald de los párrafos de Omar Khayyam 61 y 62. Donde dice y cito:
No, dijo otro, seguramente no es en vano

Jake joins the chorus

There is a special time in every parents experience that is unforgettable. First word, first step, first birthday. Our video show such a moment in the life of a small red monkey. He was rescued from appalling condition in Merida by a man called Jake. We named the monkey after him.
Today, and for the first time little Jake joined the morning chorus. You can see him putting body and soul into the performance. Well done little Jake, no longer a baby but a young adult. God Bless you.

Jake se une al coro

Hay un momento especial en las experiencia de los padres que es inolvidable. La primera palabra, el primer paso, el primer cumpleaños. Nuestro video muestra un momento en la vida de un mono aullador  pequeño. Fue rescatado en condiciones deplorables en Mérida por un hombre llamado Jake. Hemos llamado al mono igual, en honor a él.
En este día, y por primera vez  Jake se unió al coro de la mañana. Se lo puede ver poniendo cuerpo y alma en la actuación. Bien hecho porque Jake, ya no es un bebé, es un adulto joven. Dios los bendiga.
