This is Paquito and he joined Canaote on Sunday. He comes from a loving home in Caracas. His human family arrived here in two cars. Clearly they were concerned that he was going to a good home. His human family decided to ask Canaote to accept him because several members of the family had become allergic to him. He is eight years old and has suffered from Osteoporosis since birth. He walks in a crouch. We will have to make special arrangements for him as I would not be happy if he were to use the bamboo walkways. We will modify an enclosure so that he has low swings and low height hoops. He is very friendly and spent his first day with Cosito and Jake.
I believe that it is too late to treat his Osteoporosis but I have previously noted small improvements when sufferers are treated with a mild calcium containing diet. Milk will definitely feature in his diet. The allergy is interesting. Previously I have heard reports of allergic reaction in humans when the individual has come in contact with the monkeys saliva. Howlers mark out trees by passing saliva to their beards and then using this as a paintbrush to adorn the tree. This saliva contains some chemical not identified, to which individuals can become allergic.
