Clearly the arrival of the baby has made a difference. I must say that over the last few weeks, since Nicki was born, I have noticed no difference in the behaviour of the boys. Suddenly,five days ago, Lucio attacked Moñito viciously, biting his right arm at the joint. There was quite a lot of blood. I entered the enclosure to rescue Moñito, but this caused yet another attack and this time on the left arm and leg. I succeeded in separating them although at one point I thought the Lucio was going to attack me. He didn't, he remembered who I was. The second attack was completely unnessesary as Moñito was already cowering and very scared. He is such a well behaved monkey.
I had Moñito in the house following the attack and I treated the wounds frequently through the day with antibiotics. He was held in a small cage where I could easily treat him. We decided that stitches were not necessary.
Naturally he has been very depressed. From having a big enclosure with swings and toys to a small cage away from everyone. Clearly we had to improve on his surroundings. We have a small cage alongside the one of the main enclosures which we use as a hospital when needed. But it needed quite a lot of work to make it comfortable. We made a house from an unused microwave cabinette. and he has a small walkway. This is very much a temporary home whilst a larger cage is built. There is no question of him returning to Lucio and Jaco. Young Cosito seems to like Moñito and I am hoping that once the new structure is in place that they will share it.
Moñito is recovering well and there is no sign of infection. I am safe in saying that the main damage will be to his ego. He is very subdued. He has my attention and I am with him every few hours. I am sure that he will recover completely.
The new enclosure is nearing completion. I am hoping that it will be ready for Moñito during this week. We are furnishing it with the toys that we know he loves. His human Family have been very supportive and we have had help with medical supplies from Asociación Civil Voluntarios por los Animales.
Caring for monkeys is not easy. They must be watched for changes of mood. Their friends must be chosen carefully. And always there has to be concern for their natural wild instincts. This is a case in point. Almost certainly, Lucio identified Moñito as a threat to the new baby. This was probably incorrect, as Moñito is a fairly laid back person. Playful 'yes' but a threat 'no'. Moñito es lesionado
Los lectores habituales sabrán que Jaco dio a luz a una niña hace poco más de cuatro semanas y su nombre es Nicki. Lucio es el padre. Los tres monos, Lucio, Monito y Jaco han vivido juntos durante varios años. Tanto Lucio y Monito son monos alfa. Los dos chicos siempre han jugado juntos, a veces un poco duro, pero esa es la manera de los monos Alfa. Es evidente que la llegada del bebé ha hecho una diferencia. Debo decir que durante las últimas semanas, desde que Nicki nació, no he notado ninguna diferencia en el comportamiento de los chicos. De repente, hace cinco días, Lucio ataco a Moñito fuertemente, mordiendo su brazo derecho en la articulación. Hubo mucha sangre. Entré en el recinto para rescatar a Moñito, pero esto provocó otro ataque y esta vez en el brazo izquierdo y la pierna. Logré separarlos, aunque en un momento pensé que Lucio me iba a atacar. No lo hizo, se acordó de quién era yo. El segundo ataque fue completamente innecesario Moñito ya estaba encogido y muy asustado. Él es un mono con muy buen comportamiento. Tuve a Moñito en la casa después del ataque y le trate las heridas con frecuencia durante el día con antibióticos. Él fue llevado a una jaula más pequeña, en la que fácilmente podía ser curado. Decidimos que las puntadas no eran necesarias. Naturalmente, ha estado muy deprimido. De tener un gran recinto con columpios y juguetes a una pequeña jaula lejos de todos. Es evidente que teníamos que mejorar su entorno. Tenemos una pequeña jaula junto a la de los recintos principales que utilizamos como un hospital cuando es necesario. Pero es necesario mucho trabajo para que este cómodo. Hicimos una casa con un microondas viejo que no sirve y tiene un pequeño tubo de paseo. Esto es en gran medida un hogar temporal mientras se construye una jaula más grande. No hay duda de que él, no va regresar con Lucio y Jaco. El joven Cosito parece que le gusta Moñito y espero que una vez que la nueva jaula este construida, la van a compartir.
Moñito se está recuperando bien y no hay signos de infección. Estoy seguro al decir que el daño principal será en su ego. Él es muy tenue. Él tiene mi atención y lo visito a cada rato. Estoy seguro de que él se recuperará por completo. El nuevo recinto está a punto de concluir. Espero que esté listo para Moñito durante esta semana. Lo estamos decorando con los juguetes que sabemos que ama. Su familia humana lo ha apoyado mucho y hemos tenido ayuda con suministros médicos de la Asociación Civil Voluntarios Por los Animales. El cuidado de los monos no es fácil. Deben ser observados para los cambios de estado de ánimo. Sus amigos deben ser elegidos cuidadosamente. Y siempre tiene que haber preocupación por sus instintos salvajes naturales. Este es un ejemplo de ello. Casi con toda seguridad, Lucio vio a Moñito como una amenaza para el nuevo bebé. Esto fue probablemente incorrecto, porque Moñito es un mono bastante relajado. Juguetón "sí", una amenaza "no". Nuestra foto muestra a Moñito en su hogar temporal
