Construction day three.

The third day of work on the new enclosure has been hampered by heavy rain and power cuts. Cement doesn't harden well in the rain and you need electricity to weld. In spite of these setbacks, some progress was made. All the upright posts are in place and the posts for the double front gate are positioned. If the weather is with us, we expect a lot more progress tomorrow. Our picture shows the uprights have been cemented in and the enclosure begins to take shape.I think it is going to be a happy home.

Tercer día de construcción.

El tercer día de trabajo en el nuevo cercamiento ha sido poco por la fuerte lluvia y por los cortes de luz. El cemento no endurece si llueve y también necesitamos electricidad para soldar. A pesar de estos retrasos, algún progreso se ha hecho hoy. Todos los postes están derechos en su lugar y los postes para la puerta delantera doble están colocados. Si el tiempo está con nosotros, esperamos mucho más progresos para mañana. Nuestra foto muestra los tubos que han sido consolidados y el cercamiento que empieza a tomar forma. Yo pienso que va a ser una casa muy bonita para los monos.

Construction day two

Serious work began today on the new enclosure for the two Capuchin monkeys that we are expecting. All the metal, wire and electrical equipment are on site and the two workers have started preparation. We estimate three or four days work.

Segundo día de construcción.

El trabajo serio empezó hoy en el nuevo cercamiento para los dos monos Capuchinos que nosotros estamos esperando. Todo el metal, alambre y equipos eléctricos están en el sitio y los dos obreros han empezado a trabajar. Nosotros estimamos que en tres o cuatro días de trabajo estará listo.

Did you forget?

This month has been a particularly expensive month for us at Canaote. Two of our monkeys got into a fight and that caused an outrageous veterinary bill. Tutti got infected with parasites and that added to the clinical bills both for treatment and medicines. Both animals have recovered completely. There has been an increase in the salaries of our care staff. But it does show how delicate our finances are. We care for a lot of monkeys and our own resources are not sufficient to cover everything we need. Owners have encouraged me to take their children with promises of regular donations. When these donations do not arrive, we have a crisis. This month for some reason, donations have been very light. If you have a monkeys here please help us. We have accepted your responsibly of lifetime care. Now please accept your responsibility to us.

¿Lo ha olvidado?

Este mes ha sido un mes especialmente costoso para nosotros en Cañaote. Dos de nuestros monos pelearon fuertemente y esto provocó un gasto veterinario sumamente alto. Tutti se infecto con parásitos y también hubo gastos para los exámenes y los medicamentos. Ambos animales se han recuperado completamente. Se ha producido un aumento de los sueldos de nuestro personal para el cuidado de los monos. Y nuestras entradas monetarias están muy reducidas. Nos preocupamos por una gran cantidad de monos y nuestros propios recursos no son suficientes para cubrir todo lo que necesitamos. Los dueños me han animado al traer a sus hijos con promesas de donaciones regulares. Cuando estas donaciones no llegan, tenemos una crisis. No room at the Inn?

As the months go by, the pressure on me to accept more monkeys seems to be increasing. This month I was asked to accept two beautiful capuchin monkeys. I told the enquirer that although I had the love and the space, I did not have either the cages or the money to accept more. The capuchin owner immediately volunteered to pay for the construction of a new large enclosure. The money arrived and the materials have been bought and are on site. This Monday a skilled welder will begin the construction. I will bring you photographs as the work proceeds. I must admit that the cost of the skilled welder was a shock. Indeed the cost of materials was about three times what it had previously cost. As you know my main purpose is the care of Howler monkeys. When ARFA Hidra was unable to accept monkeys, I volunteered to accept up to five. This will bring our number to seven. When I see their confused, frightened faces I just cannot say, ‘no room at the inn’.

¿Lo ha olvidado?

No hay lugar en la posada?

Como pasan los meses, la presión sobre mí, para aceptar más monos parece ir en aumento. Este mes se me pidió que aceptara dos monos capuchinos hermosos. Le dije al solicitante que a pesar de que tenía el amor y el espacio, yo no tenía ni las jaulas ni el dinero para aceptar más monos. El propietario de los capuchinos de inmediato ofreció pagar por la construcción de un nuevo gran recinto. El dinero llegó y los materiales han sido comprados y están en el sitio. Este lunes un soldador experimentado comenzará la construcción. Yo les traeré fotografías a medida que avancen los trabajos. Debo admitir que el costo del soldador calificado fue un shock. De hecho, el costo de los materiales es tres veces más de lo que había costado anteriormente. Como ustedes saben mi principal objetivo es el cuidado de los monos aulladores. Cuando ARFA Hidra no ha podido aceptar más los monos, me ofrecí para aceptar hasta cinco. Esto hará que nuestro número llegue a siete.

The great lettuce free for all.

Our supermarkets in the smaller towns are full of bottles and tins and packets of foods, much of it imported. In or near the big towns like Caracas and Valencia, you will find in the markets, large areas of open fridges containing frozen fish, peas, mixed vegetables, smoke salmon (my favorite, just in case you are passing through). One day maybe you will even find frozen T.V dinners. But at this moment, locally, we have a fine new vegetable market with a bank of eight big top loaded fridges, full of packeted frozen fruit pulp. Not that it benefits the store because of my sampling I found most of it bad. How much more useful it would have been if it had contained smoked salmon or TV dinners. But I digress. The fact is that this is a most excellent store. The owner has set a standard. He vows that all his produce (he sells fresh fruit and all kinds of vegetables) will be only of the highest quality. No potatoes with shovel marks or cauliflower with black centers. No cabbages with yellow leaves and the point of my story, only the freshest of crisp lettuce. The lettuces are cleaned almost down to the heart. This results in a great pile of good quality, human edible lettuce leaves. The owner happened to discover my work with monkeys and offered these leaves, free of charge at anytime I wish to collect them. This is of course a great piece of good news. We buy many lettuces every week to supplement the leaves that we bring in from the forest. This is going to be a good saving in our weekly monkey food budget. I came home today with two very large sacks of lettuce leaves. We washed and distributed a good portion of it and as you can imagine the children went crazy for it. We have been promised a weekly supply by the market and we are very happy to receive it. Our picture, showing Lucio, Monito and Jaco, and a big pile of lettuce, the picture is not our usual standard but we had to be quick before all the lettuce disappeared. This scene was repeated in all our enclosures. Nothing could be heard above the steady munching of crisp lettuce leaves.

Lechuga gratuita muy buena para todos.

Los supermercados en las ciudades más pequeñas están llenos de botellas, enlatados y paquetes de alimentos, algunos de ellos importados. Cerca a las grandes ciudades como Caracas y Valencia, se encuentran los mercados, con grandes áreas de frigoríficos abiertos que contienen el pescado congelado, guisantes, vegetales mixtos, salmón ahumado (mi favorita, por si acaso usted está de paso y lo ve). Un día, quizás incluso encontrar comidas congeladas rápidas. Pero en este momento, a nivel local, tenemos un mercado surtido con verduras con un banco de ocho grandes frigoríficos cargados hasta arriba, lleno de pulpa de fruta congelada empaquetados. El hecho es que esta es una tienda muy buena. El propietario ha establecido un estándar. Él promete que todos sus productos (frutas frescas y todo tipo de verduras) serán sólo de la más alta calidad. No hay papas con feas marcas o coliflor con el centro negro, ni repollos con hojas amarillas y puntos negros, sólo lo más fresco en lechuga. Las lechugas se limpian casi hasta el corazón. Esto se traduce en un producto de buena calidad y muchas hojas de lechuga comestibles. El propietario descubrió mi trabajo con los monos y ofreció estas hojas, de forma gratuita en cualquier momento que yo quiera recogerlas. Esto es por supuesto una buena noticia. Compramos muchas lechugas cada semana para completar las hojas que traemos desde el bosque. Esto va a ser un buen ahorro en nuestro presupuesto semanal de alimentos para los monos. Llegué a casa hoy con dos sacos de gran tamaño de hojas de lechuga. Lavamos y distribuimos una buena porción de ellas y como se pueden imaginar los niños se volvieron locos con ella. Se nos ha prometido una entrega semanal por el mercado y estamos muy contentos de recibirlo. Nuestra imagen, Lucio, Moñito y Jaco, con un montón de lechuga, el panorama no es nuestra costumbre, pero tenía que ser rápido antes de que todas las lechugas desaparecieran. Esta escena se repitió en todos nuestros recintos. No se oía otra cosa que no fuera lo crujiente de las hojas de lechuga mientras las comían los monos.

Roquacita loves fruit juice.

I have not posted for a few days. It has not been possible to take a camera into the compound as a result of the heavy rains. Today it is bright and cheerful and the first thing I saw was Roquacita (in my picture). Roquacita's enclosure adjoins our house and is partly in the corridor in front of my window. It is a large area with ropes and a hammock. However she spends most of her day in the open, where she has a view of all the other monkeys. She loves food and when I enter her space, she comes to her table to see what has been brought. She particularly likes the bowl of fruit juice which I take her from my own breakfast. We have been slow to become friends. She does not like being touched. When it was became clear that I respected this, She started coming quite close to me and does not back away. In her outside garden she has an extensive bamboo walkway and two live trees to sit in.

Roquacita ama el jugo de fruta.

No he publicado durante unos días. No ha sido posible tomar fotos, como consecuencia de las fuertes lluvias. Hoy el día es luminoso y alegre y lo primero que vi fue a Roquacita (en mi foto). La jaula de Roquacita colinda con nuestra casa y se encuentra parcialmente en el pasillo frente a mi ventana. Es un área grande con cuerdas y una hamaca. Sin embargo, ella pasa la mayor parte de su tiempo al aire libre, donde tiene una vista de todos los otros monos. Ella ama los alimentos y cuando entro en su espacio, llega a su mesa para ver lo que se le ha traído. Ella le gusta particularmente la taza de jugo de fruta que le llevo de mi propio desayuno. Hemos ido lento para hacernos amigos. No le gusta que la toquen. Cuando se hizo claro que yo la respetaba, ella comenzó a llegar muy cerca de mí y no se escapaba hacia la parte de atrás de la jaula. En su jardín exterior tiene una amplia pasarela de bambú y dos árboles vivos para sentarse.

Here at Cañaote we are ever aware of our responsibility to care for God’s children. This is the reason for our endeavors. We try to serve him through our work with the monkeys in our care. We often think of Saint Francis who recognized that all creatures were made by God and that they have a place reserved here on earth and in the life to come. We give praise to God and thank him for the help and wisdom given to us by his servant Saint Francis.

Todas las cosas brillantes y hermosas.

Aquí en Cañaote siempre estamos conscientes de nuestra responsabilidad de cuidar a los hijos de Dios. Esta es la razón de nuestros esfuerzos. Nosotros tratamos de servirle a través de nuestro trabajo con los monos a nuestro cuidado. A menudo pensamos en San Francisco, quien reconoció que todas las criaturas fueron hechas por Dios y que tienen un lugar reservado en la tierra y en la vida venidera. Damos gracias a Dios y damos las gracias por la ayuda y la sabiduría que nos ha dado su siervo San Francisco.

Toula and Sofia have visitors.

This weekend Toula and Sofia had a big crowd of visitors. Suzanne,Toula's mother and Rudy, Sofia's mother, set out very early on Saturday morning, from Caracas. They travelled bringing a new group of friends to visit their children. Our pictures show Sofia on the left and Toula on the right.

Este fin de semana Toula y Sofía tuvieron una gran multitud de visitantes. Suzanne, la madre de Toula y Rudy, la madre de Sofía, llegaron muy temprano en la mañana del sábado, de Caracas. Viajaron para traer a un nuevo grupo de amigos para visitar a sus hijos. Nuestras imágenes muestran Sofía arriba y Toula a la abajo.

Emma and Marco.

We thank Gabriela for these wonderful photographs of Emma and Marco (left). Just recently Gabriela's picture of Emma appeared on Facebook and Emma received many compliments. Both these children spent their early lives at Canaote. Emma's history goes even further back to the ARFA facility at Hidra. We have some video of her at ARFA as a tiny tot. But amazingly you would be in no doubt that it is her. Her face always looks sad but in fact she is a comic with a serious face and that is the best way I can describe her. She moved from Canaote to Manrique when Marco was in severe depression at the loss of his wife, Vicky. The story is told elsewhere on the blog but suffice it to say that her wonderful love and her strong character soon won him over and now they are the perfect pair. Always together, Marco also lived at Canaote when he was small. He was no bigger than the fist of my hand. He was nurtured by Sussy whose picture you can see at the top of the left hand column.

Emma y Marco.

Damos las gracias a Gabriela por estas maravillosas fotografías de Emma y Marco (izquierda). Recientemente Gabriela colocó una de foto de Emma en Facebook y Emma recibió muchos elogios. Estos dos niños pasaron sus primeros años de vida en Cañaote. La historia de Emma va aún más lejos, ella pequeña fue criada en ARFA. Vimos en Youtube.com un video de ella en ARFA cuando estaba pequeña. Pero sorprendentemente, ella no ha cambiado su cara. Su rostro siempre se ve triste, pero en realidad es muy cómica con un rostro grave y que es la mejor manera que puedo describirla. Ella se mudó de Cañaote a Manrique cuando Marco tuvo una gran depresión por la pérdida de su esposa, Vicky. La historia se cuenta en otro articulo anterior aquí en el blog, pero basta decir que su amor maravilloso y su fuerte carácter pronto se ganó a Marco y ahora son la pareja perfecta. Siempre juntos, Marco también vivió en Cañaote cuando era pequeño. No era más grande que el puño de mi mano. Él se nutrió de Sussy cuya imagen se puede ver en la parte superior de la columna de la izquierda de este blog.

Things are rather tight financially at Canaote. The International economic downturn is hitting us hard. The pound against the dollar has dropped from two dollars to the pound to under one and a half. My meager U.K pension is stretched as far as I can. We have no other income. Our local inflation here in Venezuela is running at an all time high. Obviously this affects the price of food for the children as well as ourselves. We have now twenty children to feed. Our work has never been more needed. People are leaving Venezuela. Las cosas son más bien estrechas financieramente en Cañaote. La recesión económica internacional nos está golpeando fuerte. La libra esterlina frente al dólar ha bajado de dos dólares por libra a menos de uno en año y medio. Mi escasa pensión del Reino Unido se estira en la medida que puedo. No tenemos otros ingresos. Nuestra inflación local aquí en Venezuela se está ejecutando en su punto más alto. Obviamente, esto afecta el precio de los alimentos para los niños, así como a nosotros mismos. Tenemos ahora veinte hijos que alimentar. Nuestro trabajo nunca ha sido más necesario. La gente está abandonando a Venezuela. Algunos están abandonando sus animales en la calle. Cleaning up.

As a howler monkey gets older and in particular if he is an alpha, there is a high probability that he will become very territorial and aggressive. This presents a problem for staff who are responsible for important work inside the enclosures. It is necessary for the enclosures to be cleaned every day. In addition the enclosures must be entered for the delivery of food and the collection of empty plates. We have considered many solutions to this problem. Finally we decided that a high pressure hose would be helpful. Howlers do not like getting wet. The mere presence of the water jet is enough to send even the most alpha howler to the other end of the enclosure. Naturally great care is used in hosing. This jet is very powerful and could possibly injure a monkey. The jet has been very successful. Even in the mango season when the ground inside the garden is covered in ripe mangoes, cleaning has been excellent. Our picture shows Rafael, one of our helpers using the jet.

La limpieza.

Como un mono aullador se hace mayor y, en particular, si es un alfa, hay una alta probabilidad de que se convertirán en muy territoriales y agresivos. Esto presenta un problema para los empleados que son responsables de la importante labor dentro de los recintos. Es necesario que los recintos que se limpien todos los días. Además de los recintos deben ser incluidas las entregas de alimentos y la recogida de platos vacíos. Hemos considerado varias soluciones a este problema. Finalmente se decidió que una manguera de alta presión sería de gran ayuda. A los Aulladores no le gusta mojarse. La mera presencia del chorro de agua es suficiente para enviar incluso a los aulladores alfas hasta el otro extremo del recinto. Naturalmente gran cuidado se utiliza con el tubo. Esta presión de agua es muy poderosa y podría perjudicar a un mono. El hidrojet ha tenido mucho éxito. Incluso en la temporada de mango, cuando el suelo dentro del jardín está cubierto de mangos maduros, la limpieza ha sido excelente. Nuestra foto muestra a Rafael, uno de nuestros colaboradores con el hidrojet.

A visit to Ramona in Tinaco.

Ramona is a adult female howler monkey who lives with her human family in Tinaco, the nearest town to our compound. As you can see from the photograph, she is in good health. You see her enjoying a bunch of forest leaves freshly collected by us for her this morning. In particular, you can see her coat is in fine condition.
She is well cared for and much loved by her family. We have visited her for some years. Her accommodation has been greatly improved during that time. Formerly she was chained to a tree in the street, where she was a danger to people passing. She now has her own tree away from the street behind the family shop. Her tree is covered in healthy leaves but all monkeys like to have a change of leaf diet. She gets very exited when she sees me. Jumping on my shoulder as a greeting and showing that she remembers the man who brings her leaves. She shares the family home at night.
Her chain is a little on the short side. Perhaps the owners could invest in a new one.

Ramona es una mona aulladora adulta que vive con su familia humana en el municipio Tinaco, el pueblo más cercano a nuestra finca. Como se puede ver en la fotografía, ella goza de buena salud. Usted puede verla disfrutar de un montón de hojas del bosque recién recolectadas por nosotros para ella. En particular, se puede ver el pelaje que está en muy buenas condiciones.
Ella está bien cuidada y es muy querida por su familia. La hemos visitado desde hace algunos años. Su alojamiento se ha mejorado mucho durante ese tiempo. Anteriormente estaba encadenada a un árbol en la calle, donde ella era un peligro para los transeúntes. Ahora tiene su propio árbol lejos de la calle detrás de la tienda de la familia. Su árbol está cubierto de hojas sanas, pero a todos los monos les gusta tener un cambio de tipo de hojas. Ella se pone muy contenta cuando me ve. Saltando en mi hombro a modo de saludo y demostrando que ella recuerda al hombre que le trae hojas frescas. Ella duerme dentro de la casa familiar en la noche.

Nothing is quite as striking as the royal Poinciana (Delonix regia) in bloom. Trees produce a massive canopy of red/orange flowers in springtime through summer. Trees can obtain a height of 40 feet. When the golden shower (Cassia fistula) blooms, the tree fills with a mass of bright red and yellow flowers, which also attract butterflies. In this short video you can see a swarm of yellow butterflies.

This Delonix regia is at the entrance to Canaote although there are several on the property. The tree a native of Madagascar, was not planted by human hands. The gardener is a mystery. Birds perhaps.

Video de mariposas atraídas por Delonix regia en Cañaote

Nada es tan asombroso como el Royal Poinciana (Delonix regia) en flor. Los árboles producen un dosel masivo de flores de color rojo anaranjado en la primavera hasta el verano. Los árboles pueden obtener una altura de 40 pies. Cuando la lluvia de oro (Cassia fistula) flores, el árbol se llena de una masa de flores de color rojo brillante y amarillo, que también atrae a las mariposas. En este breve vídeo se puede ver un enjambre de mariposas amarillas.

Esta es Delonix regia a la entrada de Cañaote aunque hay varios en la propiedad. El árbol nativo de Madagascar, no fue plantado por manos humanas. El jardinero es un misterio. Las aves tal vez.

One of the most beautiful trees in the world!

Canaote is also a Botanic Garden and we have many special delights in their season. The most dramatic sight at this time is the Delonix Regia. A deciduous tropical tree with fern-like leaves, that is considered one of the most beautiful trees in the world! One of it's thrilling features is it's attractiveness to butterflies. Our picture shows the Delonix in full sunlight with a swarm of white butterflies.

Uno de los árboles más bellos del mundo!

Cañaote es también un Jardín Botánico y tenemos muchos placeres especiales en esta estación. La vista más espectacular en este momento es el Delonix Regia. Un árbol tropical caducifolio con hojas de helecho, que es considerado uno de los árboles más bellos del mundo! Una de sus características emocionantes es el atractivo para las mariposas. Nuestra imagen muestra el Delonix a pleno sol con un enjambre de mariposas blancas.

Schatov loves Sophie.

The truth is that Schatov is Sophie's second husband. Toto her former spouse released himself into the forest. She was alone for some time. She was not interested in the attentions of other monkeys, although we tried introductions. Finally Schatov persistently escaped from his enclosure and made his way across the canopy to her. He would sit for hours above her garden. She played hard to get and did not instantly accept his overtures. We open the door to the enclosure and Schatov hopped in. Since then they have been inseparable. They are a truly happy pair and we hope that one day they will have a child.

Schatov ama a Sophie.

La verdad es que Schatov es el segundo marido de Sophie. Toto fue su primer marido que se escapo al bosque. Ella estuvo sola durante algún tiempo. Ella no estaba interesada en la atención de otros monos, aunque habíamos intentado hacer varias presentaciones. Por último Schatov persistentemente se escapó de su recinto y se dirigió a través de los techos de las jaulas hasta el recinto de ella. Se sentaba durante horas en el techo de rejas de su jardín. Ella jugó duro con él para no aceptar sus propuestas. Un día abrimos la puerta del recinto de Shatov y el corrió hacia ella, desde entonces han sido inseparables. Son una pareja realmente feliz y esperamos que un día tengan un hijo.

Toula and Sofia. Good friends.

You can never make assumptions when it comes to the likes or dislikes of monkeys. Just as it is with humans. You like someone maybe for a good reason or perhaps because of a gut feeling. Yes! I think I am going to get on well with you. The same is true of dislikes. As an example, I thought that lonely Oliver the male Capuchin, would welcome Toula's company. He was not aggressive towards her but he completely ignored her. Was it just a matter of time? No, we gave them plenty of time together. They just did not get on. When newcomers arrive at Canaote we regard it as non trivial to find the right group in which that child will feel welcome, comfortable and safe.
I am pleased to say that Toula and Sofia get on well together. It is important from the beginning to distinguish between monkey play and monkey war. It is not always clear on day one. Toula and Sofia play hard and it is amazing to watch them. Where does all that energy come from? Photography is difficult under these circumstances. You know what you want to portray in the picture but the children are never still for one moment. You are lucky if you get what you want. Sofia on the left of our photographs and Toula on the right.

Toula y Sofía. Las buenas amigas.


Nunca se puede hacer suposiciones en cuanto a las simpatías o antipatías de los monos. Así como es con los seres humanos. ¿Te gusta alguien tal vez por una buena razón o tal vez debido a una primera impresión. ¡Sí! Creo que me voy a llevarse bien con usted. Lo mismo puede decirse de disgustos. Como un ejemplo, yo pensaba que el macho Capuchino Oliver, vería con agrado la compañía de Toula. El no era agresivo con ella, pero la ignoraba por completo a ella. ¿Era sólo una cuestión de tiempo? No, les dimos un montón de tiempo juntos. Ellos simplemente no se llevaban bien. Cuando llegan los monos nuevos a Cañaote lo consideramos como no trivial, tenemos que encontrar el grupo adecuado en el que ese niño se sienta bienvenido, cómodo y seguro.
Me complace decir que Toula y Sofía se llevan bien. Es importante desde el principio distinguir entre el juego y la guerra mono a mono. No siempre está claro desde el primer día. Toula y Sofía juegan duro y es sorprendente verlas. ¿De dónde viene toda esa energía? Tomar la fotografía es difícil en estas circunstancias. ¿Sabes lo que queremos reflejar en la foto pero los niños nunca están completamente quietos por un momento. Tienes suerte si consigues lo que quieres. Sofía a la izquierda de nuestra fotografía y Toula a la derecha.

Bits y piezas.

Le he cambiado el nombre a Rocacita, a mi me gusta mas Roquacita, así que de hoy en adelante ese será su nombre.


Los primeros días de mayo anuncian un nuevo aumento salarial sustancial para el personal. Estamos luchando ahora, con el aumento nos veremos en problemas a menos que tengamos un poco de ayuda. Snakes and Primates.

There is a happy relationship at Canaote between man and snakes. There is no doubt that the snakes are there but have no interest in humans. Most of the time they are out of sight and out of mind. Humans obey the simple rule. Don't put your hand or feet in a place where you cannot see. This golden rule will keep you out of trouble. When I am walking in thick undergrowth I bang on the ground with my stick. Just to make sure the snakes hear me. Invisibly and silently they scuttle away. They don't want to meet me anymore than I want to meet them.

Having said that, there are slip ups. During the wet season we occasionally find a snake near the house. But very rarely in the house. The snake in our picture is a Coral snake, one of the 65 varieties of Coral in Venezuela. This one gave David quite a shock. It appeared in his bedroom whilst he was sitting reading a book. The snake was soon captured and returned to the forest.

Note

Coral snakes are most notable for their red, yellow/white, and black colored banding. (Several nonvenomous species have similar coloration, however, including the Scarlet Kingsnake, the Milk Snake, and the Chionactis occipitalis annulata.) In some regions, the order of the bands distinguishes between the non-venomous mimics and the venomous coral snakes, inspiring some folk rhymes — "Red on yellow, kill a fellow; red on black, friend of Jack", "Red on Yellow Kills a Fellow, Red on Black, Venom Lack," and "Red on yellow kills a fellow; red on black, pat it on the back" or "if red touches yellow, you're a dead fellow (for Coral Snakes); if red touches black, you're okay, Jack (for similar looking Milk Snakes)". However, this only reliably applies to coral snakes native to North America: Micrurus fulvius (Eastern or common), Micrurus tener (Texas), and Micruroides euryxanthus (Arizona), found in the southern and eastern United States. Coral snakes found in other parts of the world can have distinctly different patterns, have red bands touching black bands, have only pink and blue banding, or have no banding at all.

Las serpientes y los primates.

Hay una relación feliz en Cañaote entre el hombre y las serpientes. No hay duda de que las serpientes están ahí, pero no tienen ningún interés en los seres humanos. La mayoría de las veces están fuera de la vista y la mente. Los seres humanos obedecen la regla simple. No ponga su mano o pies en un lugar donde no puedes ver. Esta regla de oro le mantendrá alejado de los problemas. Cuando camino en la espesa maleza suelo golpear el suelo con mi bastón. Apenas para cerciorarme que las serpientes pueden oírme. Ellas no quieren reunirse conmigo ni yo con ellas.
Dicho esto, hay nuevos deslizamientos. Durante la estación lluviosa a menudo se encuentra una serpiente cerca de la casa. Pero muy rara vez dentro de la casa. La serpiente en la foto es una serpiente coral, una de las 65 variedades de coral en Venezuela. Éste dio a David un buen susto. Al parecer, en su dormitorio mientras él estaba sentado leyendo un libro. La serpiente fue capturada poco después y se llevo de regresó a la selva.

Serious challenges.

During the early weeks of this month we have experienced a number of very serious challenges. In the first week we had temperatures of 39 degrees and this was a record during the time we have lived here. All the monkeys took this in their stride, keeping to the shade as much as they could and sometimes using their houses. We expected Roquacita to have the greatest problem with it, since she has only recently joined us from a much cooler State. However she coped well and is no worse for the experience.
Early in the month there was an incident involving Lucio and Hector, the baby who recently came to live with us. Lucio did what I thought was impossible. He reached out to an adjacent cage and managed to grab the hand of Hector who was taunting the alpha from the opposite wall. This resulted in a very severe bite on Hectors hand which needed hospitalization and stitches. Hector lost two fingers in the assault. He has spent the last few weeks in my 24/7 company and only yesterday did we return him to his friends. He has recovered completely and manages to eat and climb normally using his damaged right hand.
We have had to make some changes in the monkey accommodation as a result of the attack, otherwise it could happen again. Why it happened I will explain later in another post.
For sometime our biggest enclosure has been empty. This big space was one of the first we constructed. Recently we refurbished this area, replacing old wooden supports with metal. This was seen to be an ideal location for Chiquetin and Zeus. They were moved into this location a week ago and have settled down to enjoy this very large and well furnishes accommodation. Swings and suspended tires, Hammock and extensive walkways make this a paradise for active Capuchin monkeys. There is also a large weatherproof house. There are also several large live mango trees in the enclosure.
All that then remained to accomplish was to find a suitable enclosure for Lucio, Moñito and Jaco. The needs of Capuchins and Aruguatos are different when it comes to designing an enclosure. Howlers need long walkways. The furniture has to be more complex and interesting. We set about converting the large enclosure at the front of our house, formerly occupied by the Capuchins. Firstly we constructed a new house. This is important for Howlers. They hate getting wet, and here we are at the beginning of a two month early, rainy season. There are several covered areas where they can shelter from the rain and also eat their food without it being drowned by the heavy rains.
Lucio was moved to his new home yesterday and has started to get used to it. Howlers are very territorial and it will take a while for him to acclimatize to his new residence. Our picture shows him and the newly furbished enclosure. You can see the walkways and covered area.

Retos importantes.

Durante las primeras semanas de este mes hemos experimentado una serie de desafíos muy serios. En la primera semana tuvimos temperaturas ambientales de 39 grados y se trataba de un registro que nunca hemos vivido aquí. A todos los monos les pego muchísimo el calor, manteniéndose a la sombra lo más que podían y, a veces utilizando sus casas. Pensabamos que Rocacita era la que iba a tener el mayor problema, ya que sólo recientemente se unió a nosotros y ella viene de un Estado mucho más fresco. Sin embargo, ella lo enfrento bien.
A principios del mes se produjo un incidente en el que Lucio y Héctor, el bebé que llegó hace poco a vivir con nosotros, ya que Lucio hizo lo que yo pensaba que era imposible. Extendió su mano a la jaula de al lado y logró agarrar la mano de Héctor, Lucio es un mono alfa adulto. Esto dio lugar a una mordida muy grave en la pequeña mano de Héctor, que requirió hospitalización y puntos de sutura. Héctor perdió dos dedos en el accidente. Héctor a pasado las últimas semanas 24 horas al día conmigo cargado en mi hombro, hasta ayer que regreso a la jaula con sus amigos. Se ha recuperado completamente y se las arregla para comer y trepar normalmente, usa la mano derecha dañada con los tres dedos que le quedaron.
Hemos tenido que hacer algunos cambios en las instalaciones de los monos como resultado del ataque, de lo contrario podría ocurrir de nuevo. ¿Por qué paso este accidente lo voy a explicar más adelante en otro post.?
Por algún tiempo nuestro principal recinto ha estado vacío. Este gran espacio fue uno de los primeros que construimos. Recientemente hemos renovado esta área, en sustitución de antiguos soportes de madera con el metal. Esto fue visto como un lugar ideal para Chiquitin y Zeus. Ellos fueron trasladados a este lugar hace una semana y se han establecido para disfrutar de este gran alojamiento. Columpios y neumáticos en suspensión, Hamaca y andadores amplios hacen de este un paraíso para los monos capuchinos por la vida tan activa que llevan. También hay una casa grande resistente para resguardarse de la intemperie. También hay varios árboles grandes de mango vivos en el recinto.
Todo lo que entonces se quedó para llevar a cabo era encontrar un recinto adecuado para Lucio, Monito y Jaco. Las necesidades de los Capuchinos y los Araguatos son diferentes cuando se trata de diseñar un recinto. Los Aulladores necesitan de pasarelas largas. El mobiliario ha de ser más complejo e interesante. Hemos comenzado a transformar el gran recinto en el frente de nuestra casa, anteriormente ocupado por los capuchinos. En primer lugar se construyó una nueva casa. Esto es importante para los Aulladores. Ellos odian mojarse, y aquí estamos en el comienzo temprano a dos meses de la época de lluvias. Hay varios ámbitos donde puedan guarecerse de la lluvia y también comer sus alimentos sin que sufran por las fuertes lluvias.
Lucio se trasladó a su nueva casa ayer y ha comenzado a acostumbrarse a ella. Los araguatos son muy territoriales y necesitará un tiempo para aclimatarse a su nueva residencia. Nuestra imagen lo muestra, y el local recientemente reformado. Puedes ver las pasarelas y una zona techada.

Update on Rocacita

A short while ago we reported on the arrival of Rocacita. She was in a poor condition with a severe parasite infection. We hasten to add that she did not acquire the parasite with her former owner but rather caught the problem in a park where she she was temporarily housed. The good news is that she has responded completely to treatment and the Vet is now satisfies that she is parasite free. But you can see this in her appearance and her behavior. She is now the mother of this troop and completely integrated in their daily routine. Most remarkable has been the improvement of her coat. It now has a splendid sheen. The sheen we associate with a healthy monkey. More reports on her soon.

Actualización sobre Rocacita

Hace poco se informó sobre la llegada de Rocacita. Ella estaba en mal estado con una infección parasitaria grave. Nos apresuramos a decir que no ha adquirido el parásito con su antiguo propietario, sino en un parque donde ella se alojaba temporalmente. La buena noticia es que ella ha respondido completamente al tratamiento y el veterinario diagnostico que está libre de parásitos. Usted puede ver esto en su apariencia y en su comportamiento. Ahora es la madre de esta tropa y esta completamente integrada a su rutina diaria. Lo más notable ha sido la mejoría de su pelaje. Ahora tiene un brillo espléndido. El brillo que asociamos con un mono sano. Más informes sobre ella pronto.

The love story of Marco and Emma.

La historia de amor de Marco y Emma.



En el mes de Diciembre de 2009, en el día de Navidad, Marco perdió a su amada esposa Vicky, por una enfermedad renal que ella presentó. Desde ese día el cayo en una profunda tristeza y depresión al faltarle su querida compañera, no mostraba interés en nada, comía muy poco y comenzó a escaparse de la casa.

Yo me comunique con el Dr. Philip y le explique de la situación de Marco, y conversamos sobre una nueva compañera para él.

El Dr. Philip, me ofreció a Emma que es una hembra de 3 años y que nunca había tenido la compañía de un macho adulto.

El 24 de Enero Emma llego a mi casa, Marco la vio cuando ella llego, pero no le presto mucha atención, el seguía muy triste y deprimido.

Emma estuvo en una gran jaula que tengo en mi casa, durante un mes y Marco no mostraba ningún interés en ella, no la visitaba, solo la miraba de lejos en las tardes cuando se sentaba en un árbol cercano.

Emma por el contrario si mostraba muchísimo interés en Marco, todo el tiempo estaba pendiente de él, buscándolo con la mirada todo el tiempo.

Marco se escapo de la casa por 3 días y yo lo busque desde el primer día pero me fue imposible traerlo de regreso a la casa, porque se encontraba en arboles muy altos lejos de la casa.

En esos momentos pensé en llevar a Emma de nuevo a la casa del Dr. Philip, ya que su estancia no había sido positiva para la unión.

Para mi sorpresa Marco regreso al tercer día, y tome la decisión de liberar a Emma cuando el estaba cerca de la jaula de ella.

Al abrirle la puerta ella corrió hacia Marco, cuando estuvo cerca Marco la recibió con un poco de agresividad y Emma se asusto mucho y corrió a la jaula de nuevo, yo le deje la puerta abierta y ella volvió a salir y acercarse a Marco, él comenzó a olerla a ella y los sitios donde ella se había sentado, comenzó a marcar territorio, esto lo hacen los monos araguatos escupiendo y luego pasando la barba por el mismo sitio, para de esta manera dejar su olor.

Emma también hizo lo mismo de marcar territorio, luego de unas horas ella regreso a su jaula, y los días subsiguientes la fui soltando cada vez mas horas hasta que ella quedo totalmente libre y siguiendo a todas partes a Marco, el le enseño los sitios de interés para ellos, como donde están las hojas mas tiernas, las frutas, el sitio de dormir, de comer, etc.

Emma tiene una particularidad, que siempre arranca una sonrisa a quien la mira, y es su forma de sentarse, de acostarse y de caminar en dos patas, cosa muy rara en los monos.

Ella se sienta con las patas traseras estiradas totalmente y las manos las apoya hacia atrás, hacia su espalda igual que una persona. Se acuesta boca abajo, con los brazos y piernas totalmente estirados a los lados, es realmente muy fuera de lo común.

Gracias a Dios esta historia de amor tiene un final feliz, Emma y Marco están muy enamorados y pienso que muy pronto van a tener un bebé, porque ya están trabajando en ello.

In the month of December 2009, Christmas Day, Marco lost his beloved wife Vicky, She died of a kidney disease. From that day he on fell into a deep sadness and depression because of the absence of his dear companion and he showed no interest in anything, he ate very little and started running away.

I communicated with Dr. Philip and explained Marco's situation, and talked about a new companion for him.

Dr. Philip, Gave me Emma a female who is 3 years and had never had the company of an adult male.

On January 24 Emma came to my house, Marco saw her arrive, but did not pay much attention, he was still very sad and depressed.

Emma was in a large cage in the garden of my house for a month and Marco showed no interest in her, not visited, only watched from afar in the evening when he sat in a nearby tree.

Emma on the other hand showed much interest in Marco, all the time awaiting him, and following him with her eyes.
Marco ran away from the house for 3 days and I found him on day one but I could not bring him back to the house, because he was very high in trees away from the house.

At that moment I thought to take Emma back to the home of Dr. Philip, as it looked as if there was going to be no union.

To my surprise Marco came back on the third day, and I took the decision to release Emma when he was near her cage.

As I opened the door she ran to Marco when she came close to him, he became aggressive and Emma was very frightened and ran to the cage again, I left the door open and she came back out and close to Marco, he began to smell her and the places where she had sat down, he began to mark territory, this what howler monkeys do spitting and then moving the beard for the same site, to thereby leave their scent.

Emma did the same to mark territory. A few hours later she returned to her cage, and on subsequent days every time I increased the hours of her freedom until she was totally free. I showed her sites of interest, like where are the most tender leaves, fruits, site for sleeping, eating, etc..

Emma has one peculiarity, which always makes a beholder smile, and it is her way of sitting, lying down and walking on two legs, something very rare in monkeys.

She sits with her hind legs fully stretched and supports hands back toward your back like a person. She lays face down, arms and legs fully stretched out to the sides, is really very unusual.

Thank God this love story has a happy ending, Emma and Marco are very much in love and I think very soon going to have a baby because they are already working on it.

The story of Rocacita.

Some seven years ago Rosemary, a lady in Trujillo state obtained a small female baby Howler. The monkey, whose name is Rocacita, lived with her in a small apartment. Most her day she spent in the living room in the company of the family dogs. She was loved and well taken care of. But for years and years the only thing she saw was Rosemary and the dogs, so she was very bored. For some reason the monkey attracted the attention of the Guardia National, who threatened to enter the apartment and take the monkey away. In time it became impractical to keep the monkey for reason of threats from the GN and other health reasons.
The Rosemary has a friend who has a park and the friend offered to take the monkey for a while. During the three months in the park the monkey became depressed and was clearly unhappy. Subsequently we discovered that the monkey had become infected with parasites whilst in the park. At this point the family heard of Canaote and decided to ask us to take the girl. We accepted her. When she arrived here her coat was in a poor condition and she was quite severely depressed. Clearly the time in the park was not a happy one. We introduced her to the enclosure with six young monkeys, mixed male and female. She rapidly acclimatized to her new surroundings. After a few days here, we noticed that she was sleeping more than expected and was very low in activity she had also become anaemic. We carried out tests and identified a parasite causing the problem. She has responded very well to the treatment and is now restored to good health. Now she has become the mommy to this group. They are a happy little gang.

La historia de Rocacita.

Hace unos siete años, Rosemary, una dama del estado Trujillo obtuvo una pequeña bebé chillona. La mona, cuyo nombre es Rocacita, vivió con ella en un pequeño apartamento. La mayor parte del día la pasaba en la sala de estar en compañía de los perros de la familia. Era amada y bien cuidada. Pero durante años y años lo único que vio fue a Rosemary y a los perros, por lo que era muy aburrido. Por alguna razón el mono atrajo la atención de la Guardia Nacional, quien amenazó con entrar en el apartamento y tomar a la mona. Con el tiempo se convirtió en poco práctico mantener a la mona por las amenazas de la GN y por otras razones de salud.
Rosemary tiene un amigo que tiene un parque y el se ofreció a llevar al mono por un tiempo. Durante los tres meses que estuvo en el parque la mona tenía una fuerte depresión y estaba claramente infeliz. Posteriormente se descubrió que la mona se había infectado con parásitos, mientras estuvo en el parque. En este punto la familia se enteró de Cañaote y decidió solicitarnos que recibiéramos a la niña y nosotros la aceptamos. Cuando ella llegó aquí su pelaje estaba en mal estado y estaba muy deprimida. Era evidente que el tiempo en el parque no fue feliz para ella. La colocamos en una jaula con seis monos jóvenes, mezclados machos y hembras. Ella rápidamente se aclimato a su nuevo entorno. Después de unos días aquí, nos dimos cuenta de que dormía más de lo normal y que tenia muy baja actividad, descubrimos que estaba anémica. Por medio de exámenes de sangre se identificó un parásito que causa el problema. Ella ha respondido muy bien al tratamiento y esta mejor de salud. Ahora se ha convertido en la madre de este grupo. Ellos son una banda muy feliz.

Hector joins the family.

Rocacita almost at once became a member of the family. She behaves as if she has always been here. She sleeps with the the others in their little house and eats at their table at meal times. Hector on the other hand has taken a little time. Yesterday he played with Maria Teresa and quit the nervous walking up and down typical of a new comer. Later in the day he used the house and began to show that he was integrated with the family. Today he is just one of the boys and will spend his first night sleeping with the family.

Héctor se une a la familia.

Rocacita se convirtió casi de inmediato en un miembro más de la familia. Se comporta como si ella siempre hubiera estado aquí. Ella duerme con los otros monos en su pequeña casa y come en su mesa las comidas. Héctor por otra parte ha tomado un poco mas de tiempo. Ayer jugó con María Teresa y camino nervioso paseando de arriba a abajo típico de los recién llegados. Luego en la tarde utilizo la casita y comenzó a demostrar que se ha integrado a la familia. Hoy él pasará su primera noche durmiendo con la familia de monos.

The two new rescues settle in.

This has been a very busy week with two new residents who needed a suitable home. This is not a simple matter. You cannot just open any enclosure and say 'Well in you go and make some friends'. Howler monkeys have their likes and dislikes just like humans but also in addition there are inbuilt instinctive rules. Adult males do not readily accept the offspring of other males. In that they will attack or even kill the new comer. A new monkey must be billeted with the utmost care if disaster is to be avoided. Generally female Howlers are easier to settle although I have encountered many cases where existing females in a tribe have attacked a newcomer. This is more often the case when there already exists a number of adult females in the group.

So our task this week has been easy and difficult. Rocacita the girl on the right was accepted by Tutti, Saco and Maria Teresa. Barnaby could not believe that such a beautiful and refined lady would come and live with them and gazes at her for long periods. He is always near her. He is still very young but it looks like love at first sight. She has settled down well and is sharing the group's house for sleep at night. This is very important especially in the rainy season when their collective body heat keeps them all warm.

Hector has been difficult because he is scared of big monkeys. On his first day, whilst being transfered to the same enclosure with Rocacita, Lucio, a very large monkey, their next door neighbor roared at him and he was really scared. Since then we have noticed that he is suspicious of all other monkeys. We have often seen this with new young monkeys and time is the great healer. We introduce Hector to the enclosure early morning just after his breakfast. We allow him to interact with the others until lunchtime. He is then collected and brought back to our house. It just needs patience and tender loving care and we have plenty of that. A little more about the history of Hector and Rocacita in another posting.

Resueltos los dos nuevos rescates.

Esta ha sido una semana muy ocupada con los dos nuevos residentes que necesitan un hogar adecuado. Esto no es un asunto sencillo. Usted no puede abrir cualquier jaula y decir: 'Bueno, ve y haz algunos amigos. Los monos aulladores tienen sus gustos y disgustos como los humanos, pero también están sus normas instintivas. Los machos adultos no aceptan fácilmente los hijos de otros machos. Ellos pueden atacar o incluso matar a los recién llegados. Un mono nuevo debe ser alojado con el mayor cuidado para evitar un desastre. Generalmente las Hembras araguatos son más fáciles de ubicar, aunque he encontrado muchos casos donde las hembras adultas que comandan en una tribu han atacado a un recién llegado. Esto es más común cuando existe un número grande de hembras adultas en el grupo.

Así que nuestra tarea esta semana ha sido fácil y difícil. Rocacita la chica de la derecha fue aceptada por Tutti, Saco y María Teresa. Barnaby no podía creer que una señora tan hermosa y refinada fuera a venir a vivir con ellos y la mira durante mucho tiempo. Él siempre está cerca de ella. We accepted a little male Howler yesterday who had been abandoned in the street. Name is now Hector after the family that rescued him. Photos to follow soon.

Tomorrow we will find a place for Rocco, an adult female Howler. We continue our work but we do need your help.

Dos rescates más esta semana.

Nosotros aceptamos ayer a un pequeño mono macho aullador, quién había sido abandonado en la calle. Se llama Héctor, es el nombre que le coloco la familia que lo rescató. Las fotografías de él muy pronto.

Mañana buscaremos un lugar para Rocco, un Aullador hembra adulto. Nosotros continuamos nuestro trabajo pero nosotros necesitamos su ayuda.

What would you do if you found one of these monkeys in your living room? Had you not brought your young monkey to me, that’s where these monkeys would be. In your living room.

This week alone, there have been three applications for places at ARFA Canaote. One of them will arrive today and more next week. But this cannot carry on without your help. I have repeatedly mentioning on this blog that we have no regular source of funds. We rely almost entirely on my small pension to pay for the children’s food and the staffing needed to clean and maintain the enclosures every day. We all know what has happened to the price of food. Wages were given an upward push this week by the government declaring yet another increase in wages, paid for by you and me.
You may have noticed that the posting on Monito and Lucio was both late and short. I was so saddened by those of you who promised a regular monthly donation, that I just did not feel like writing. Of the former owners of the Aruguato or Howler monkeys, NOT ONE of you made a contribution. I have seriously considered returning some of the monkeys to make way for those who are prepared to help. Does that shock you? Believe me it shocks me. But where do I go from here?
Let me be direct. A donation of say 200.00 Bf. per month would be affordable by many of you. This would make a tremendous difference. I was there for you when you needed me. Be there for me now I need you.

Yo estaba allí para ti.



¿Qué haría usted si se encuentra uno de estos enormes monos en su sala de estar? De no haberlo traído a mi de joven. Así estarían ellos ahora, en su sala de estar.

Sólo en esta semana, ha habido tres solicitudes de plazas en ARFA Cañaote. Uno de ellos llegará hoy y otro más la próxima semana. Pero esto no puede seguir adelante sin su ayuda. En repetidas ocasiones he citan en este blog que no tenemos ninguna fuente regular de fondos. Contamos casi totalmente con mi pequeña pensión para pagar los alimentos de los niños y el personal necesario para limpiar y mantener los recintos de cada día. Todos sabemos lo que ha sucedido con los precios de los alimentos. Los salarios han aumentado de nuevo esta semana por el gobierno, pagados por usted y por mí.
Usted puede haber notado que el anuncio de Moñito y Lucio era tardío y corto. Estaba tan triste por aquellos de ustedes que prometieron una donación mensual, que yo no tenía ganas de escribir. De los antiguos propietarios de los Araguatos o monos aulladores, ninguno de ustedes hizo una contribución. He considerado seriamente devolver algunos de los monos para dar paso a los que están dispuestos a ayudar. ¿Esta usted en shocks? Créame que me choca. Pero, ¿dónde puedo ir desde aquí?
Permítanme ser directo. Una donación por decir 200,00 Bsf. al mes sería asequible para muchos de ustedes. Esto haría una gran diferencia. Yo estaba allí para ustedes cuando me necesitaron, ahora ustedes tienen que ayudarme a mí y a los monos.

Monito, second in command.

In both pictures Monito is on the left and Lucio is on the right. Even though they are now approximately of equal size, Lucio has the presence of the chief. Monito is a good second in command. He is always there when the boss starts the call. Monito has a strong voice and to be honest I have to look twice to tell them apart. This photograph was taken by Suzanne on her visit here mentioned in our last post.

Monito, segundo en el orden.

En la imagen Moñito está a la izquierda y Lucio está a la derecha. Aunque ellos son ahora aproximadamente de igual tamaño, Lucio tiene la presencia del jefe. Moñito es el segundo al mando. Él siempre está allí cuando el jefe empieza la llamada. Moñito tiene una voz fuerte y para ser sincero creo que es dos veces más potente.

Suzanne celebrates her birthday with Toula and Sofia

Saturday was a day of celebration here at Canaote. Suzanne celebrated her birthday here with her friends Rudy and Rafael. Toula and Sofia also joined in the celebration. There were paper hats and colored ties and flowers galore. As well as cake and nuts and biscuits. We set out chairs and a table so that everyone was comfortable. Toula and Sofia were really pleased to see their human mamas. Rudy and Suzanne spent many hours with the children, including taking the opportunity to spend time with the howlers. They also got sweets,nuts and biscuits.

Suzanne celebro su cumpleaños con Toula y Sofía

El sábado fue un día de fiesta en Cañaote. Susana celebró su cumpleaños aquí con sus amigos Rudy y Rafael. Toula y Sofía también se unieron a la celebración. Hubo sombreros de papel, lazos de colores y flores en abundancia. Así como la torta, los frutos secos y las galletas. Sacamos sillas y una mesa para que todos estuvieran cómodos. Toula y Sofía estaban realmente contentas de ver a sus mamas humanas. Rudy y Suzanne pasaron muchas horas con los niños, incluiyendo los juegos con los regalos. También pasaron tiempo con los araguatos y les dieron dulces, frutos secos y galletas.

We have twenty monkeys in our care that is fifteen Howler monkeys and five Capuchin monkeys. All of our children with one exception come from human homes. Homes that are now peaceful, homes where the tops stay on top of spray cans and where the human children are no longer in danger of being bitten. The fact is that baby monkeys are just like baby kittens and baby puppies. They are irresistible, they are cuddly, and they are lovable. And then they grow up and maybe cause problems either within the family or community. All monkeys bite. So a time comes when for one reason or another, a parting has to be made.
This is a painful time for the monkey, a painful time for the owner and human family. Depending on the type of monkey, they can live anything between twenty and forty years. Adopting a monkey is a serious matter. Disposing of a monkey is an even more serious matter. Having committed yourself to the care of a humanlike creature and then reneging on your promise is an event which has serious implications.
There are those who, having found the Canaote Monkey Rescue Centre, breathe a sigh of relief. I have found someone to look after the monkey and I can now get on with my life. The fact of the matter is that there is a moral responsibility to continue to care and be concerned with the welfare of the monkey. There is no moral quick fix. You caused that baby’s mother to be assassinated. You bought him at the roadside and you are still morally responsible for him.
Some people make a promise of continuing donations to support their child here at Canaote. Very few people keep their promise. For example this month, only one person has made a donation out of the twenty monkeys we have resident.
Our financial resources at Canaote are very light. It is entirely the contribution from my pension from the Government of the United Kingdom. There is no other source of funds. That pension has remained unchanged for the last fifteen years with no increment.
If you truly loved the monkey you passed to my care please donate and donate regularly. Don’t make me beg.
You have no doubt about my care and love for these children.

¿Dudas de mi amor?

Tenemos veinte monos a nuestro cuidado que son: quince monos aulladores y cinco monos capuchinos. Todos nuestros niños con una sola excepción provienen de hogares humanos. Los hogares que están ahora en paz, y donde los niños humanos ya no están en peligro de ser mordidos. El hecho es que los monos bebés son como los gatitos y perritos bebé. Son irresistibles, son adorables, y son amables. Y entonces crecen y pueden tal vez causar problemas ya sea en la familia o en la comunidad. Todos los monos muerden. Entonces llega el momento por una razón u otra, de salir de él.
Este es un momento muy doloroso para el mono, un momento muy doloroso para el propietario y la familia humana. Dependiendo del tipo de mono, ellos pueden vivir entre veinte y cuarenta años. La adopción de un mono es un asunto serio. La eliminación de un mono es un asunto aún más grave. Después de haberse comprometido con el cuidado de una criatura humanoide y luego no cumplir su promesa es un evento que tiene implicaciones graves.
Hay quien, habiendo encontrado el Centro de Rescate de Monos Cañaote, da un suspiro de alivio.” He encontrado a alguien para cuidar a mi mono y ahora puedo seguir con mi vida.” El hecho del asunto es que hay una responsabilidad moral a seguir con atención e interés por el bienestar de los monos. No hay una solución moral rápida. Ustedes al comprarlo provocaron que la madre de otro bebé fuera asesinada. Usted lo compró en la carretera y usted todavía es moralmente responsable de él.
Algunas personas hacen la promesa de continuar con las donaciones para apoyar a sus hijos aquí en Cañaote. Muy pocas personas han mantenido su promesa. Por ejemplo, este mes, sólo una persona ha hecho una donación de los veinte monos que tenemos residentes.
Nuestros recursos financieros en Cañaote son muy pequeños. Es totalmente la contribución de mi pensión del Gobierno del Reino Unido. No hay ninguna otra fuente de fondos, y la pensión se ha mantenido sin cambios durante los últimos quince años sin ningún incremento.
Si realmente amaba al mono que ha dejado a nuestro cuidado, por favor, done y done con regularidad. No me hagan rogar.
Ustedes no tienen ninguna duda acerca de mi cuidado y el amor que siento y les doy a estos niños.
