Zeus and Chiquatin have destroyed their shelter.

Zeus and Chiquatin are a perfect boy girl pair. They play vigorously all day. The chasing game, which is their favorite,takes them all over their very large enclosure. Zeus,(left in our photographs)in spite of her name is a young lady. She is a newcomer but has settled in well. She has noticeably increased in weight and muscle since she arrived. Due no doubt to the almost violent activity. The pair of them take great pleasure in throwing themselves against the tin roof of their shelter to the point where they have destroyed it. Helpers here have spent a few days collecting materials to build them a new house. In the meantime they have a smaller dwelling where they sleep, which has a roof. This also gives them shelter when it's raining. There will be pictures of course when the new shelter is complete.

Zeus y Chiquitin han destruido su jaula.

Zeus y Chiquitin son un par de niños hembra y macho perfectos. Ellos juegan vigorosamente todo el día. El juego de la persecución que es su favorito, por todo su cercamiento que es muy grande. Zeus, (a la izquierda arriba de nuestra foto) ese es su nombre, ella es una señorita joven. Ella es nueva aquí pero se ha establecido muy bien. Ella ha aumentado notoriamente de peso y músculos desde que ella llegó. Debido sin duda a la actividad casi violenta. Ellos dos tienen el gran placer de tirarse contra el tejado de estaño de su casita, al punto que ellos lo han destruido. Third time lucky?

On Monday morning we decided to try again with the union of Schatov and Sophie. The Casa Schatov was inspected and given a hygienic check out. Bedding was inspected and found to be dry and clean. Both monkeys were collected from their enclosures and put together in their prospective new home. They circled each other for a while. Schatov was clearly interested. He puffed up and made all the right clicking noises. At one point they sat together back to back with a little gentle pressure between them. This is a ‘getting to know you’, performance. For the rest of the morning, Schatov marked out the territory, marking all the trees with his spittle, whilst Sophie examined the roof wire and the areas around the trees. We had discovered the location from where she had escaped on a previous occasion. She returned to this place time and time again, testing the wire. During mid morning Rafael presented them with a bunch of their favourite leaves from the forest. They sat happily together and shared the leaves. By early afternoon all seemed quiet except that Schatov was sitting at the gate asking to be returned to his home with Lucio, Moñito and Jaco. Sophie was gone. We were confident that all holes had been found and that the enclosure was secure but Sophie had found another fault. Schatov was returned to his old house. Later in the day, some farm workers reported to us that they had seen a monkey inside one of the farm cottages. We investigated and found Sophie waiting for us. She was returned to her own enclosure. She obviously had no stomach for another week in the forest. We are puzzled. Has she spent so long alone that she prefers her own company. I don’t believe that. I think she is shy and given the opportunity she would like to stay with Schatov but she needs time. Firstly we have to make sure that Casa Schatov is secure and then we will try again. Third time lucky.

¿A la tercera va la vencida?
El lunes por la mañana nosotros decidimos intentar de nuevo la unión de Schatov y Sophie. La Casa Schatov fue inspeccionada y con un chequeo higiénico, todo estaba seco y limpio. Ambos monos fueron traídos de sus cercamientos y reunidos en su nueva casa probable. Ellos nos rodearon durante algún tiempo. Schatov estaba claramente interesado. Él resopló e hizo todos los ruidos pulsando el botón correcto. En un momento dado ellos se sentaban juntos de espaldas con la presión un poco mansa entre ellos. Ramona is a adult female howler monkey who lives with her human family in Tinaco, the nearest town to our compound. As you can see from the photograph, she is in good health. You see her enjoying a bunch of forest leaves freshly collected by us for her. In particular, you can see her coat is in fine condition.
She is well cared for and much loved by her family. We have visited her for some years. Her accommodation has been greatly improved during that time. Formerly she was chained to a tree in the street, where she was a danger to people passing. She now has her own tree away from the street behind the family shop. She shares the family home at night.

Visita a Ramona.

Ramona es un mono aullador hembra adulto que vive con su familia humana en Tinaco, el pueblo más cercano a nuestra finca. Como usted puede ver en la fotografía, ella está en muy buen estado de salud. Usted la ve disfrutar de un manojo de hojas frescas del bosque coleccionado por nosotros para ella. En particular, usted puede ver que su pelaje está en una condición esplendida.
A ella la cuidan muy bien y con mucho amor por parte de su familia. Nosotros la hemos visitado durante algunos años. Su alojamiento se ha mejorado grandemente durante este tiempo. Anteriormente ella estaba encadenada a un árbol en la calle dónde ella era un peligro para el paso de las personas. A ella la tienen ahora en un árbol en la parte trasera de la casa familiar. Ella duerme dentro de la casa familiar por la noche.

I am sorry about the delay in bringing you up to date with the situation with Schatov and Sophie. The situation here has been very fluid and I have hesitated to give you news that might be changed soon afterwards. Sophie gave us a bad time by finding a small hole in the roof of the new Casa Schatov. She got clean away. She has chosen to release herself before. Last time she was away for exactly six days. Then she returned but very hungry and sick with a system full of parasites. This time she returned on the fifth day, this time hungry but thankfully in good health. She has temporarily taken up residence in her old home. We are doing an exhaustive examination of the roof of Casa Schatov before we put these two children back together again. Also it makes sense to let her settle down a little before the stress of another meeting. our photograph is of course Schatov.

Todo es acción aquí.

Yo siento mucho el retraso de traerles noticias de la unión entre Schatov y Sophie. La situación aquí ha sido muy fluida y hemos dudado en darles noticias que podrían cambiarse después. Sophie nos dio un tiempo malo encontrando un agujero pequeño en el tejado de la nueva Casa Schatov. Ella se escapó por ahí. Ella se ha escapado antes. La vez pasada ella estuvo lejos durante exactamente seis días. Entonces ella volvió pero muy hambrienta y enferma con su sistema lleno de parásitos. At ten o'clock'on Saturday morning Schatov and Sophie had their first meeting in Casa Schatov. From the pictures you can see that Gabriela and I were there to greet them and wish them well. You can see that Schatov immediately set about marking out his kingdom. A very good sign because he wants everyone to know that this place is his. He showed great interest in Sophie, making lovers signs to her, that is smacking his lips. She showed some interest but being Sophie she decided to keep him guessing. They both did a complete inspection of the enclosure but only just keeping their distance from the other. There was no sign of aggression and I am fairly certain that the match is going to be a success. The next few days will tell.

Schatov fue movido

A las diez en punto del sábado por la mañana Schatov y Sophie tuvieron su primera reunión en la Casa Schatov. En las fotos se puede ver que Gabriela y yo estábamos allí para saludarlos y desearles lo mejor. Usted puede ver inmediatamente que Schatov comenzó el marcado de territorio de su reino. Una muy buena señal, porque quiere que todos sepan que este es su lugar. Tomorrow is a big day at Canaote

The cementing of the great floor in Casa Schatov is complete. Swings are in place and the long walkways painted. The hammock is in position and the bedding inside the house is clean and has been aired. Everything is ready for Schatov and Sophie to take up occupation. He will be the first in. This will establish territorially that the area is his. He will soon confirm this by marking out.

Later in the morning we expect Gabriela who will be able to watch Sophie join Schatov. Nothing is certain. Will they like each other? We had an early indication that Schatov likes her. But Sophie is a very strange lady. She is very choosy to whom she gives her favors. I predict there will be a chase and maybe a minor fight as Schatov establishes his rights. He has grown into a fine adult monkey and I am sure he will prevail. More news and photographs of the event tomorrow.

A table and a couple of chairs have been placed inside the new enclosure so that I can visit in comfort. This is at Schatov's request, because he likes to sit of my lap. He just looks ferocious but actually he is my big baby.

Mañana es un gran día en Cañaote

El piso de cemento en la Casa de Schatov está totalmente terminado.
Los columpios y andadores largos están pintados y listos. La hamaca instalada y la ropa de cama limpia en el interior de la casita. Todo está listo para Schatov y Sophie para asumir la ocupación. Él será el primer habitante, esto territorialmente para establecer que la zona es suya. Él tiene que dejar sus marcas y olores primero.

Chasing games and mock battles.

Here at Canaote we have an unrivaled opportunity to compare monkey life in the wild with their lives in semi captivity. My first observation would be that Howler monkeys in semi captivity are much more athletic than their counterparts in the wild. Rapidly circling their walkways, use of swings and general vigorous interaction in play, is typical behavior. Chasing games and mock battles take up a good part of their day. The monkey in the wild sleeps more and generally lives a more leisurely life.

I have previously remarked on how much time a very young Howler demands. Maria Teresa is only four months old and is bottle fed, she demands human company 24 hours a day.


She becomes very agitated if she is left alone or put in a secure environment.

This of course means that she is on my shoulder all day. As you can see from the photograph, this includes when I am shaving. Now shaving soap does not taste good. But I have yet to meet a monkey who does not want to eat it. It makes shaving difficult.

Meal times can be riotous. Particularly when Maria Teresa's favorite is on the table. You see her in our picture, launching herself into a plate of Spaghetti.

Naturally, when we have a baby in our care,our movements are severely restricted. Trips to the town for shopping have to be carefully planned to make sure that we have a suitable baby sitter. The monkey having bonded to one individual, does not take kindly to being dumped on someone else. When I return form my infrequent trips, I am greeted with great joy.

Los juegos y los simulacros de batallas.


Aquí en Cañaote tenemos una oportunidad inigualable para comparar la vida de un mono en la naturaleza y la vida en semi cautiverio. Mi primera observación es que los monos aulladores en semi cautiverio son mucho más deportistas que sus homólogos en la naturaleza. Ellos corren rápidamente en círculos por sus pasarelas, el uso de las oscilaciones por los juguetes o columpios colocados en sus recintos y de las vigorosas interacciones en el juego, es el comportamiento típico. Los juegos y simulacros de batallas ocupan una buena parte de su día. El mono en la naturaleza duerme más y, en general, vive una vida más pausada.

He observado con anterioridad el tiempo que requiere un mono joven aullador de ser cuidado y consentido. María Teresa tiene sólo cuatro meses de edad y es alimentada con biberón, que exige de mi presencia las 24 horas del día. Ella se vuelve muy agitada, si se queda sola o si no esta en un entorno seguro.

Esto, por supuesto, significa que ella está en mi hombro todo el día. Como pueden ver en la fotografía, lo que incluye cuando estoy afeitándome. El jabón de afeitar no sabe bien. Pero no me he encontrado con un mono que no quiera probar la espuma. Por supuesto es muy difícil para mí afeitarme.

Casa Schatov, finished bar the cement;

Here is the latest picture of Casa Schatov, complete except for the cement. As you can see it is a grand location with live trees and a high ceiling, giving the maximum possible freedom to the monkeys who will live here. We can't return them to the forest but we can bring the forest safely to them. The wait will probably delay occupation by a week. But that is a small price to pay for the added safety against the parasites of the forest. In the picture you can see the covered eating table with its white ceramic top, a swing in the foreground,a two story house with walkways leading to the doors and a massive walkway which completely circles the enclosure and also leads to forks in the live trees.

La casa de Schatov, esta casi terminada solo falta el piso.


Aquí esta la última foto de la Casa de Schatov, completa salvo el piso de cemento. Como usted puede ver es una gran jaula con árboles vivos y un techo alto, para tratar en lo posible dar libertad máxima a los monos que vivirán aquí. Nosotros no podemos devolverlos al bosque pero nosotros podemos traer el bosque seguramente a ellos. Hay que esperar para habitarla probablemente por una semana. Pero ése es un precio pequeño de pagar por la seguridad agregada contra los parásitos del bosque. En el cuadro usted puede ver la mesita para comer techada, la mesa tiene tope de cerámica blanca, un columpio en el medio, andadores que llevan a las puertas, a la casita de dormir y un andador macizo que completamente rodea el cercamiento y también llevan a los árboles vivos.

A delay for Casa Schatov.

I have made a change of plan with the move of Schatov to his Casa. Because this is the beginning of the rainy season, the floor of the Casa Schatov will become muddy and wet. This is not a problem in itself because of the extensive bamboo walkways. But it is an encouragement to parasites in the soil. We will wait until we have been able to cover this big floor with cement. This will give him the same protection that he has in his present home. I will have to beg, borrow and steal 30 sacks of cement for this as well as a lorry load of sand. I know where I can borrow a cement mixer. The labour will also be expensive. I had a quote for 3,000,000 Bs. Any help with this cost will be greatly appreciated.

Un retraso en la Casa Schatov.

Yo he hecho un cambio de plan con el movimiento de Schatov a su nueva Casa. Porque éste es el principio de la estación lluviosa, el suelo de la Casa Schatov se pondrá barroso y húmedo. Éste no es un problema en sí mismo debido a los andadores de bambú extensos. Pero es un estímulo a los parásitos en la tierra. Nosotros esperaremos hasta que nosotros hayamos podido cubrir este suelo grande con el cemento. Esto le dará la misma protección que él tiene en su casa actual. Yo tendré que rogar por un préstamo ò donación de 30 sacos de cemento para esto, así como un camión de arena. Yo sé donde yo puedo pedir prestado un mezclador de cemento. Los obreros también serán caros. Yo tengo un estimado de 3.000.000 Bs. Se apreciará cualquier ayuda con este gasto grandemente.

Casa Schatov nearly complete.

Maria Teresa took a look around the new Casa Schatov enclosure this morning. You can see her picture here as she makes her way around,inspecting the quality of the work.
The construction is complete. The two story house has been painted a cheerful yellow and green and extensive walkways circle the whole enclosure. All that remains is the addition of a number of toys such as swings and hoops. We hope that Schatov will take up residence tomorrow. In the meantime, Maria Teresa gave a thumbs up to the quality of the construction.

La casa de Schatov esta casi completa.


María Teresa echó una mirada alrededor de la nueva casa recinto de Schatov esta mañana. Usted puede ver que ella esta haciendo una inspección de cómo quedo la calidad del trabajo.
La construcción está completa. La dos casa de la historia se han pintado en amarillos y verdes y extensos andadores alegres rodean el cercamiento entero. Adicionalmente hemos agregado varios juguetes como los balancines y aros. Nosotros esperamos que Schatov entre a la nueva residencia en la mañana. Entretanto, María Teresa dejó sus dedos pulgares marcados demostrando de esta manera, la calidad de la construcción.

I wanted you to see this picture because it shows Schatov in a little known activity. Well first of all he looks angelic in this picture. This is the real young monkey Schatov. But more than this he is coating his beard with saliva which he is then painting on to the tree. He is marking out his territory. You can often see this activity in the wild but it is unusual to see it in conditions of semi captivity

Schatov, una rara imagen.

Quiero que usted vea esta imagen porque muestra a Schatov en una actividad muy poco conocida. Bien, en primer lugar él parece angelical en esta foto. Éste es el joven Schatov. Pero lo que quería mostrarles es que él esta colocando saliva en el árbol y luego el pasa su barba para humedecerla y dejar su olor, de está manera el esta marcando su territorio. Usted puede ver a menudo esta actividad en el mundo salvaje pero es raro verlo en las condiciones de semi-cautiverio.

Our Capuchins love the rain

In our shelter we have fifteen Howler monkeys, five girls and the rest are boys. We have four Capuchin monkeys three boys and a girl. Nineteen monkeys in our care. Nothing can be more different than the behavior of these two types of monkey. I will write a more detailed piece on this subject soon. One of the outstanding differences is their attitude to water. Howlers hate getting wet. At the first sign of rain the Howlers head for their houses, whilst the Capuchins come out to play. Capuchins are known to be great swimmers. Nothing gives them more fun than playing with water,whether it be a hosepipe a puddle, a pool or a bucket of water.

Nuestros Capuchinos aman la lluvia

A nuestro cuidado tenemos quince monos Aulladores, cinco muchachas y el resto son los muchachos. Nosotros tenemos cuatro monos Capuchinos, tres muchachos y una muchacha. Diecinueve monos en total a nuestro cuidado. Nada puede ser más diferente que la conducta de estos dos tipos de monos. Yo escribiré un articulo más detallado pronto de este asunto. Una de las diferencias excelentes es su actitud con el agua. Los aulladores odian mojarse. A la primera señal de lluvia los Aulladores se dirigen hacia sus casas, aunque los Capuchinos salen para jugar. Se conocen Capuchinos por ser grandes nadadores. Nada es para ellos más divertido que jugar con el agua, sea un charco, una piscina o un cubo con agua.

Nuestra foto muestra dos capuchinos de nuestro Centro. En el lado izquierdo esta Chiquitín, un macho y en el lado derecho Zeus nuestra ultima hembra recibida en el centro.

The change of season, a timely reminder.

With the beginning of May we note the change of season. The month started here with heavy rain. Within the first 24 hours we received 110 mm of rain. The forest has responded and you can see in our photograph, with the beautiful Delonix regia that graces the gate to our compound, now in full bloom. (Delonix regia is a native of Madagasca.) In the foreground you see Josephine our housekeeper, to give you an idea of the size of the tree.
The children too are reflecting the change in season. Their early morning call is now earlier. Howlers hate getting wet and at the first sign of a downpour they head for their houses. On the other hand, the four capuchins love water and prepare to have fun in the rain.

El cambio de estación, un recordatorio oportuno.
Con el comienzo del mes de Mayo nosotros notamos el cambio de estación. El mes empezó aquí con lluvia fuerte. Dentro de las primeras 24 horas nosotros recibimos 110 mm de lluvia. El bosque ha respondido y usted puede ver en nuestra fotografía, el regio de Delonix bonito que se ve en la entrada de nuestra casa, ahora por completo floreado. (El regio de Delonix es un árbol nativo de Madagascar.) En el primer plano usted ve Josefina nuestra ama de casa, para darle una idea del tamaño del árbol.
Los niños también están reflejando a tiempo el cambio. Su aullido de principio de mañana es ahora más temprano. Los aulladores odian mojarse y a la primera señal de un aguacero ellos se dirigen hacia sus casas. Por otro lado, los cuatro capuchinos aman el agua y se preparan para divertirse con la lluvia.

Casa Schatov

Here are the first pictures of Schatov's new enclosure under construction. We are still some days away from completion but the work is going well. all the metal struts are in place but yet to be welded. In our picture you can see Cheo welding one of the double doors. Cutting up the metal has proved to be a laborious task although it need not be. We have a special machine for cutting metal tube which is quick and accurate but Nelson the worker, tells me he prefers to use a hand saw. All the joints in the new house are welded metal.

Schatov will take up residence here we hope with a wife. He is now an adult and needs his own space. We are also hoping to introduce him to Sophie. She has been such a lonely girl since Totto left. She is a difficult monkey, not always in the best of temper. Time will tell if they make a good couple. I have enclosed a picture of her taken this morning, You can see what a fine coat she has. She is a fully grown female. Finally there is a picture of the outline of the new enclosure. As you see very semi finished. Still with much work to be done.

La casa de Schatov
Aquí están las primeras imágenes del nuevo recinto de Schatov en construcción. Estamos todavía algunos días lejos de la conclusión, pero el trabajo va bien. Todas las estructuras de metal están en su lugar, pero aún no se han soldado. En nuestra imagen se puede ver a Cheo soldando una de las puertas dobles. Hasta el corte de metal ha demostrado ser una tarea ardua, aunque no será necesario. Tenemos una máquina especial para el corte de tubo de metal que es rápido y preciso, pero el trabajador Nelson, me dice que él prefiere utilizar una sierra de mano. Todas las estructuras en la nueva casa serán de metal.

Schatov tendrá su residencia aquí, y esperamos que sea con una esposa. Él es ahora un adulto y necesita su propio espacio. También estamos esperando para introducir a Sophie. Schatov's flock

In this post I want to show some of the less noticeable characteristics of Schatov's group. Starting with Schatov. He is usually photographed full facial. This time you can see his fine profile and his wonderful beard. You will notice that he has beautiful hands. A veritable Paderewski if you look at those long fingers. An octave and two I would say. On the next line left, we have a side view of Moñito. His classic pictures are nearly all frontal. This picture shows his long body. He is growing up so quickly. To his right a profile view of Lucio. His coat is beautiful and his beard very fine. He is a big monkey but always in the shadow of his leader Schatov. There is a possibility that Schatov will leave to form a new family in the large enclosure we are building at the moment. In this event, Lucio would become the paderotti. and we would expect his beard to grow more vigorously and his physical appearance to become more threatening. Jaco is left on the next line. You can see that she is a very tall lady (ouch!) and very beautiful of course. Right on this bottom line is another picture of Moñito in a more classic pose for him.

La Manada de Schatov
En este post yo quiero mostrar algunas de las características menos notables del grupo de Schatov. Empezando con Schatov. Él normalmente se deja fotografiar la cara. Esta vez usted puede ver su fino perfile y su barba maravillosa. Usted notará que él tiene las manos bonitas. Un verdadero pianista si mira esos dedos largos. Y nosotros esperaríamos que su barba creciera más vigorosamente y su apariencia física fuera más amenazante. Jaco sale en la próxima línea de fotos. Usted puede ver que ella es una señora muy alta y muy bonita claro. En la ultima foto esta Moñito en su más clásica pose.

Maria Teresa, an unusual skill.

We have 19 monkeys in our care here at Canaote. I like to give you news on all of them in turn. Occasionally one of them does something cute or unusual that causes me to give them an extra turn. Tonight Maria Teresa showed us an unusual skill for a young Howler. Howlers are not known as great tool user. The Chimps of course are famous for that. Maria Teresa can be seen in our photograph using a spoon with good effect, to serve herself with mango juice. She is full of surprises. She is still bottle fed and needs to live in the house with us. This is why you see her pictures with household backgrounds. She will live inhouse for some months to come.

María Teresa, tiene una habilidad rara.

Nosotros tenemos 19 monos a nuestro cuidado aquí en Cañaote. Me gusta darles a la vez noticias de todos ellos. De vez en cuando uno de ellos hace algo inteligente o raro por eso me gusta darles un giro extra. Esta noche María Teresa nos mostró una habilidad rara para un Aullador joven. Los aulladores no son conocidos como grandes usuario de herramientas. Los Chimpancés claro, si son famosos por eso. María Teresa puede verse en nuestra fotografía que utiliza una cuchara, para beber el jugo de mango. Ella está llena de sorpresas. Ella todavía es alimentada con tetero y necesita vivir en la casa con nosotros. Por esto es que usted ve sus fotos con los fondos de la casa. Ella vivirá dentro de la casa durante algunos meses.

Yesterday we received two generous donations but unfortunately the bank does not indicate the donor on our statement. If you have made a recent donation, please mail me so that I can thank you. Meanwhile a short report on the construction of the new enclosure. Yesterday we puchased all the metal struts needed for the work and this morning it will be delivered. We are still busy on the design. I shall be taking some pictures for you as the work proceeds.

Ayer recibimos dos donaciones generosas pero no sabemos quien las hizo, el banco no indica quien es el depositante. Si ha hecho una reciente donación, por favor envíeme un mensaje para que pueda darle las gracias. Mientras tanto, un breve informe sobre la construcción del nuevo recinto. Ayer adquirimos todas las estructuras metálicas necesarias para el trabajo y esta mañana nos será entregado. Estamos aún ocupados en el diseño. Voy a estar tomando algunas fotos para que usted vea como van los trabajos.

Maria Theresa is doing well.

I had quite forgotten how time consuming a baby howler can be. She needs 24 hour attention, and this includes providing fresh milk in the early hours of the morning This severely restricts my movements and many activities. But she is a pleasure to be with. I am able to watch her learn. I can see her reaction to the other monkeys and wonder how she knows that she should join in the morning chorus. A bit squeaky perhaps but never the less she is in there. Her diet at the moment is fortified milk, soft fruit, lechosa, melon, mango. She is nearly potty trained, she knows that the bathroom is the place for pooh pooh, well most of the time.
Okay the report is that she is eating well and sleeping well. She is vigorous and altogether she is doing well.

María Teresa lo está haciendo bien.


Había olvidado bastante el tiempo que consume un bebé aullador. Ella necesita atención las 24 horas, y esto incluye el suministro de leche fresca en las primeras horas de la mañana. Esto restringe severamente los movimientos de mi y mis muchas actividades. Pero es un placer estar con ella. Soy capaz de ver y aprender. Puedo ver su reacción al ella ver a los demás monos y me pregunto cómo sabe ella que debería unirse en la mañana al coro o aullido.
Su dieta en este momento consiste en leche, frutos rojos, lechosa, melón, mango. Ya casi va al baño sola, ella sabe que el baño es el lugar para Pooh Pooh, y la mayor parte del tiempo ella lo hace.
Muy bien el informe: ella come bien y duerme bien. Ella es fuerte y por eso estoy feliz.

We start work today on the new enclosure. We really need this new location to house the ever growing demand for our shelter. We have received very little in the way of donations to help with this work. Please give generously this time. It is a big enclosure including live trees for the comfort of our children.

Nosotros empezamos a trabajar hoy en el nuevo cercamiento. Nosotros realmente necesitamos este nuevo recinto por la demanda creciente para el resguardo de los nuevos monos. Nosotros hemos recibido muy pequeña donaciones para ayudar con este trabajo. Por favor sean generosos. Es un cercamiento grande que incluye árboles vivos para el mejor desenvolvimiento de nuestros niños.

Maria Teresa Arrives.

It seems that every week now, we receive requests for our help. On Friday morning we received a call, saying that a baby howler had been rescued and the baby could be brought to Canaote the following day.

When I first saw her my heart melted. Maria Teresa, a resident of Valencia, bought the monkey because she saw her being mal treated by a drunk. She seems to have paid over 200.00 to rescue this little person. She kept her for 2 weeks before contacting us. The little girl had no name so I am calling her Maria Teresa. She seem to have settled down happily on my shoulder. I am getting some licks around my ears. She is drinking from a bottle and eating soft fruit. She seems in good health although she might have a cold.
Here is yet another example of the cruelty of this trade. The mother is killed and the baby put up for sale on the streets.

María Teresa llego.

Parece que ahora, todas las semanas nosotros recibimos demandas para nuestra ayuda. El viernes por la mañana nosotros recibimos una llamada, diciéndonos que un aullador bebé había sido rescatado y el bebé podría traerse a Cañaote el día siguiente.

Cuando yo la vi me robo el corazón. María Teresa, es residente de Valencia, ella compró el mono porque ella vio como era mal tratado por un borracho. Ella parece haber pagado encima de 200.00 Bs., para rescatar a esta persona pequeña. Ella la tuvo durante 2 semanas antes de avisarnos. La muchacha pequeña no tenía ningún nombre por lo yo la voy a llamar María Teresa como la persona que la rescato. Ella parece haberse establecido alegremente en mi hombro. Yo estoy recibiendo algunas lengüetadas alrededor de mis orejas. Ella está bebiendo de un tetero y está comiendo fruta suave. Ella parece tener una buena salud aunque ella podría tener un resfrío.
Aquí otro ejemplo de la crueldad de este comercio. La madre la matan y el bebé es puesto a para la venta en las calles.

Who is Teodoro?

A little while ago we received a call from a family who have a small Hotel called Poso Suruapo in the forest near San José de los Altos. They have a two year old male howler named Teodoro. See the pictures. They told me that they wanted a female Howler for company for him. They had heard that we have many rescue monkeys here and wondered if one of the girls would be suitable. To this end they visited us recently. Unfortunately at that time none of our girls were ready to move. But we promised to keep a watch for a suitable lady. This could be a wonderful home for a female howler. No cages and free to roam the house and nearby forest as well as having Natacha and German, two very caring parents.
Time passed and we received a message from a well known professional photographer, Antonio Briceño. He had a commission requiring the picture of a howler monkey but needed it fast and for this reason he asked me if I knew of anyone with a howler near to Caracas. I at once thought of my friends Natacha and German.
Arrangements were made. Natacha and German received Antonio with their customary hospitality and the pictures were taken, Antonio kindly sent me copies of his project and additionally gave me these pictures of Teodoro.
I have to admit that I have learned a great deal from looking at the project pictures. In particular the way the background is treated. Just looking at these pictures shouts out loud of professionalism.

¿Quién es Teodoro?

Hace poco nosotros recibimos una llamada de una familia que tiene un Hotel pequeño llamado Pozo Suruapo en el bosque cerca de San José de los Altos. Ellos tienen un aullador masculino de dos años de edad, llamado Teodoro. Vea las fotos. Ellos me dijeron que ellos quisieran un Aullador hembra para hacerle compañía a él. Ellos habían oído que nosotros tenemos muchos monos de los rescates aquí y se preguntaron si una de las muchachas fuera conveniente para su mono. Con este fin ellos nos visitaron recientemente. Desgraciadamente en ese momento ninguna de nuestras muchachas estaba listas para mudarse. Pero nosotros prometimos buscar una señora conveniente. Ésta podría ser una casa maravillosa para un aullador hembra. Ninguna jaula y libre para vagar por la casa y el bosque cercano así como teniendo en Natacha y alemán, dos padres muy afectuosos.
El tiempo pasó y nosotros recibimos un mensaje de un fotógrafo profesional bien conocido, Antonio Briceño. Él tenía una comisión que requería de fotos de un mono del aullador pero lo necesitaba rápido y por esta razón él me preguntó si yo conocía a cualquiera con un aullador cerca de Caracas. Yo pensé en seguida en mis amigos Natacha y alemán.
Los arreglos se hicieron. Natacha y alemán recibieron a Antonio con su hospitalidad de costumbre y las fotos fueron sacadas, Antonio me envió amablemente las copias de su proyecto y adicionalmente me dio estos cuadros de Teodoro.
Yo tengo que admitir que yo he aprendido de mirar las fotos del proyecto. En particular la manera en que se trata el fondo de la foto. Mirando estos cuadros, simplemente son de un profesional.

Happy birthday Manina

Manina came to Canaote three years ago and at that time he was aged two. So today we wish Manina happy fifth birthday. The blog is full of stories about him. He is an exceptional Howler monkey. Although he is a full grown adult he does not exhibit the aggressiveness usually associated with alpha monkeys. He is the leader of a small group of young monkeys. He is fair with them even though he is much bigger and stronger. Manina is a great favorite with human visitors. He is definitely a Casanova with lady visitors who are likely to be surprised by a big wet kiss. Many Happy Returns Manina.

Feliz Cumpleaños Maniña

Maniña vino hace tres años a Cañaote y en ese momento él tenia dos años. Así que hoy nosotros le celebramos el quinto cumpleaños feliz a Maniña. El blog está lleno de historias sobre él. Él es un mono Aullador excepcional. Aunque él es un adulto crecido, él normalmente no exhibe la agresividad asociada con los monos alfa. Él es el líder de un grupo pequeño de monos jóvenes. Él es justo con ellos, aunque él es grande y más fuerte. Maniña es el gran favorito de los visitantes humanos. Él es definitivamente un Casanova con las visitantes femeninas que probablemente serán sorprendidas por un beso húmedo y grande. Muchas Felicidades Maniña

El sombrero del hombre viejo está de nuevo en la tierra para recibir sus donaciones.

Nosotros necesitamos de su ayuda y lo más pronto posible, ya que necesitamos construir un nuevo cercamiento para los monos. Si usted desea colaborar hágalo pronto, porque el trabajo comienza la próxima semana. El sombrero del hombre viejo está de nuevo en la tierra para recibir sus donaciones.

La próxima semana nosotros empezamos la construcción de un nuevo cercamiento de gran tamaño. El plan es que constara de dos árboles crecientes maduros por lo menos. El costo será aproximadamente $4000.00. Nosotros necesitamos este nuevo cercamiento para poder hacerle frente de la demanda constante para nuestro trabajo. Inicialmente alojará a Schatov y por lo menos otros cuatro monos.

Éste es un cercamiento grande. Nosotros podemos ser bastante económicos porque vamos a utilizar una malla de alambre que todavía está en una buena condiciones y nosotros podremos rehusarlo. El costo alto refleja la inflación de los otros materiales y el personal para construirlo. Es mucho más caro construir ahora que cuando nosotros empezamos a construir los cercamientos primero.

Esperamos que con su ayuda sea posible seguir con esta labor, y poder seguir dando a tantos monos que lo necesitan un nuevo hogar.

The old man’s hat is on the ground again.

We need your help and we need it now for a new enclosure. If you wish to give please don’t delay because the work starts next week. The old man’s hat is on the ground again.
Next week we begin construction of a new large monkey enclosure. The plan is that it will contain at least two mature growing trees. The cost will be about $4000.00. We need this new enclosure to keep abreast of the constant demand for our work. Initially it will house Schatov and at least four other monkeys.
This is a large enclosure. We are able to be quite economic because the wire used for an enclosure formally on this site, is still in excellent condition and we will be able to reuse it. The high cost reflects inflation. It is a lot more expensive to build now than when we first started to construct enclosures.

Marco the Magnificent.

Here are some more wonderful pictures of Marco in his garden. Gabriela sent these to me yesterday. You may notice a few small blemishes on his face. These are typical knocks that an active monkey gets in his daily play. When they rush through the trees occasionally they get a hit by a branch and sometimes get a playful blow from a companion. These invariably clear up in a few days and are no cause for treatment or concern. Perhaps Gabriela will give us some pictures of Vicky his wife, a very beautiful lady.

Marco El Magnífico.

Aquí tienen unas maravillosas fotos de Marco en su jardín. Gabriela envió éstas imágenes a mí ayer. Usted puede notar unas manchas pequeñas en su cara. Estos son los golpes típicos que un mono activo se da, en su obra diaria. Cuando ellos se apresuran de vez en cuando a través de los árboles ellos consiguen un golpe por una rama y a veces reciben un soplo juguetón de un compañero. Estos rasguños tardan en sanarse unos días y no es ninguna causa para tratamiento o preocupación. Quizás Gabriela nos dará algunas imágenes de Vicky su esposa, una señora muy bonita.

Erik el invader

Ha habido un cambio en la casa de las tres muchachas MonaLisa, Emma y Nancy. Ellas se han unido a Erik y a Chilin. Esto no ha sido organizado por mí. Esto ha sido una primicia de la revolución interior de Erik. Yo debo explicar que los dos cercamientos están uno al lado del otro. Ellos son casi idénticos en tamaños. Los dos tienen una sección que dan a las ventanas de el corredor de nuestra casa y los dos tienen una puerta hacia el jardín externo. Hay una puerta interconectando los dos recintos. Erik ha estado atacando esta puerta y en varias ocasiones ha tenido éxito en tratar de abrirla. Hoy nosotros hemos decidido dejar a Erik y a Chilin que tengan contacto con las tres muchachas. Nuestra foto cuenta la historia. En la izquierda usted puede ver a Nancy. El del par de ojos luminosos del medio es Erik. MonaLisa está allí también. Ha habido algunos argumentos menores, particularmente sobre quién se sienta con quien. Chilin esta cerca de Erik para no dejar su amistad íntima con él aunque Erik quiere jugar con Nancy y ser mimado por MonaLisa. Como con todas las relaciones de los monos, la situación es dinámica y se está desarrollando. Ellos han pasado un día muy ocupado. Ambas fiestas se han pasado un tiempo considerable en investigar los cercamiento del otro. Ellos están durmiendo juntos con las muchachas por la noche y al mediodía. Es imposible decir si ellos quieren esto como un arreglo duradero o simplemente están experimentando. Pero yo creo que ellos lo quieren de esta manera. Después de todos ellos lo diseñaron. Yo considero esto como un movimiento bueno. Las tres muchachas siempre han sido sospechosas de compañía masculina. De hecho en las ocasiones cuando yo he intentado unirlas a los varones, su reacción ha sido agresiva y el fósforo que hace los esfuerzos del amor ha fallado. Claramente ellas se preparan a aceptar a los varones más jóvenes. Ellas consideran a Erik un bebé y Chilin es grande para su edad pero también es muy joven. El tiempo lo dirá.
