Silvia, a new photograph.

Silvia arrived with group of Howler Monkeys that were foraging for food, three years ago. For some reason she stayed. We have accepted her as a resident although she is completely free to come and go. We provide her with the same food as our other children. She has become increasingly tame. She joins in the daily calls with great voice and defends the residents when wild monkeys visit. She accepts food gifts from the hand and shows no fear of being close to me. As you can see she is a big monkey. She moves around the site, sometimes above Lucio, much to the annoyance of Jaco. sometimes alongside Monito. She is very friendly with Nikki and they are almost always together.This photograph was taken today. At that time she was in the canopy some 25 meters above our compound.

A veces junto a Moñito.

Invaders or welcome visitors?

I have told you about these visitors. These are local wild monkey families. You can see the big chief on the right and the rest in descending order.This year and even at this moment we are being invaded by large numbers of both Capuchin and Araguato monkeys. I have been able to take pictures this morning  One of the reasons that Canaote is important is our conservation activity. I will not allow any trees to be cut down or areas deforested. It is a fight because of an extensive invasion of humans clearing land and erecting primitive dwellings.

I believe the wild monkeys are encroaching on us because they are being driven out by deforestation. We are a bastion against this robbery of their homes. But all is not lightness and brightness. The loss of our car by theft by bandits has been a blow to our release program. I have to hire taxis to both re-site the children as well as our necessary trips to town to buy supplies.

The heigh of the group is about thirty meters.

Invasores o visitantes bienvenidos!!

Zeus wants to be a painter.

Our picture shows two capuchin ladies at Canaote Rescue. One on the left is Zeus and Jane on the right. They share a very large enclosure which includes mature trees. Both are very intelligent and dexterous as you would suppose. Zeus is even taking art lessons. Because of their intelligence, we are continually looking for ways to keep them occupied. Painting is a new adventure. She is keen to try.  She wants to be a painter. But more about that in subsequent posts.

A sad experience.

We have had a sad experience over the last few days. A member of the co op, who works on the farm, brought a baby araguato to me two nights ago. He found it on the roadside in the semi dark. When he handed it to me it was very cold. I reckon about two days old. We warmed him up and then for two days held him to the chest to keep him warm. We fed him with a light solution of soy milk. We thought he was responding well. Until he suddenly went limp and died. The mother at this early time is essential. We knew from previous experience that his chances were slim but it was still a shock to hold his little body. David and I shared the task half the night each. We both cried.

The trees are alive with the sound of monkeys.

From early morning, the trees around Canaote are alive with monkeys. Crowds of Capuchin monkeys shake the trees all around me. I wish I could show you but my camera is just not up to that task. On the other side of the compound a large troop of Araguatoes ( howler monkeys) storm around the branches. Their loud call, warning others of their presence. Its the mango season and every monkey in the area, is here, helping themselves to this delicious harvest. This is after all monkey country.
This scene is repeated twice everyday, morning and evening. This coincides with the howler calls.
There was an incident recently. One of our helpers shouted out in a very excited voice, 'there are three females on top of Lucio's enclosure'. Now two would be quite normal. Silvia the wild one and Nikki, Lucio's daughter, they are always together,  and the  top of Lucio's garden is a usual meeting place. But certainly there were three. This event coincided with the visit of a large contingent of Araguatoes in all sizes and sexes, big Padarotti, females and babies and young males . Had it happened again? Had another wild female fallen in love with Lucio and decided to stay? The big event drew us all out with cameras. For a few moments we were flashing away. Here one for the record. Moments later I discovered the truth. Roquacita had found a hole in her enclosure and decided on a walk around. Yes it was a big  anticlimax but it showed us another facet of howler behaviour for us to think about. After 17 years working with monkeys I am still leaning. We ended up with some very good new photographs of Roquacita.

¿Había vuelto a pasar?

I couldn't believe my eyes.

Cosito is a lucky boy. He now has two girlfriends. Firstly there is Nineta. They are a couple. They do everything together. Eat, play and sleep. But now there is some attention from Silvia ' the wild one'. She  spends time on top of Cosito's enclosure and it is quite obvious that she wants his attention. She is a mature lady, probably about four years of age, whereas Cosito is still a baby at just over two years. You see in the picture that he is eating a banana. How did he get that banana? She gave it to him. I know that it is true because I saw it happen. You probably know that Howler Monkeys are very possessive about food. They frequently steal from each other, even taking food from another monkeys mouth then racing away to eat their prize in solitary. I have never seen any kind of empathy with howlers. Mums love their babies but that is far as it goes. Never do they give food to another animal. But I saw it. Silvia took the banana from me, took a bite and then positioned herself just above where Cosito was silting  She rolled the fruit towards him. He grabbed it and you can see him devouring it. She turned her back as if she could not bare to watch her banana being consumed by someone else. But there it is. I could not believe my eyes. She gave Cosito her banana.

Yo no podía creer lo que veía.

Cosito es un chico con suerte. Ahora tiene dos amigas. En primer lugar esta Nineta. Ellos son pareja. Lo hacen todo juntos. Comer, jugar y dormir.

The comedero

I have often commented that Howler Monkeys are not good pets. Cute and beautiful when young but aggressive and demanding when older, especially the males.Howler monkeys are strongly driven by their genes. They have a hierarchical society in which the alpha male constantly guards his position as chief. He could be replaced by a stronger contender. This leads to several kinds of behaviour. It is related to infanticide, a dominant male will kill the male offspring of another male. Recently we observed that this does not only apply to male children.  Attacks on humans are usually related to the need of the alpha to assert his leadership. Because of this it can become increasingly dangerous for staff to enter enclosures. I am often examined closely by Lucio, who tries to determine my sex by handling my clothing. Because of my long relationship with our adult males, it is unlikely that they will attack me but inexperienced staff are at risk.

Because of this I have designed a 'Comedero', or in English 'a food eating place'/ You can see a picture of it above. It has an outer door, a ceramic topped table and an inner door. The inner door leads directly into the enclosure and can be remotely opened and closed.. Food goes in, inner door opened, food is available. When complete inner door closed, plates removed, table and surround cleaned, ready for next meal.
This unit is also useful when cleaning the enclosure or carrying out repairs. The monkeys can be held within whilst the work is completed.

The right food.

Its so important to to give monkeys in semi captivity the right diet. We are fortunate in a number of ways. Firstly our compound is right on the edge of deep forest. This means that daily we can give them a variety of fresh leaves, flowers and berries straight from the forest. Araguatoes spend most of their day slowly eating large amounts of low energy leaves. The amount of leaves we would have to collect to equal their wild consumption would look like a mountain. We have a botanic garden where we cultivate tropical fruit. This is a great resource to supplement their diet and give them the energy and sustenance they need.

Silvia the wild one.

This is Silvia, the wild one we call her. Canaote is in monkey country. There are about twenty Araguato families in the immediate area. The hillside around our compound is heavily wooded. An ideal location for monkeys in the wild. One tree, I recently counted forty Capuchin  in various ages from very young to ancient. I suppose we are a day late with this story because it is really a St. Valentine tale. Silvia is wild, not one of our troop. She is in love with Lucio, one of our alpha Araguatos. Unfortunately he is already married to Yako and has a baby daughter called Nikii. But Silvia never gives up. She has been in the trees around our compound for three years now. We are so used to her that we treat her like one of our own. We put out food for her as if she were a regular boarder. As you can see she is a very pretty lady.
Even though she has been with us quite a long time, she is still wild. She will take food from my hand but never allow me to touch her. She is clever. She knows we store bananas on a cage near our back door. If ever that door is left open she will drop down from the roof and steal. Just recently I notice that she is sleeping on our roof supports at night.

Katty loves her baby.

Katty loves her baby. She doesn't actually change it's diapers, but it's her constant companion. Unusual for an araguato, their attention span with toys is short. But there, Katty is a very bright little lady.

Some people you like and others you can do without.

A month ago Eric found the door to his enclosure open. How this happened is still a mystery. Together with his female companion Roquacita, he walked out into the forest. The following morning she was still in the vicinity and without a problem she was easily induced to return to her home. Eric remained lost in deep forest. Time went by and Roquacita was showing signs of distress. She did not like being alone. For some time we had been trying to find a partner for Monito, an adult alpha. He had a large comfortable enclosure but he was alone. We moved Monito into Roquacita’s enclosure. They hit it off at once and the relationship was consummated.
More time past and we are now at two weeks ago. Eric was found hungry and weak at a nearby farm. The farmer reported a strange monkey in the trees near his house. He sent a messenger asking if we had lost a monkey. We had and with no difficulty collected him. Principally he was very dehydrated. We treated him and he soon recovered.
Now we had a problem.  Eric had returned and his place with Roquacita was taken. He was now alone.  I should explain that there is no possibility of restoring him to his former home. The male Howler is wired to kill the offspring of another Howler. There is a good chance that Roquacita is pregnant with Monito’s child. The least that would happen if Eric were restored is that she would abandon the child. The most probable would be that he would kill the baby.
Eric seems very content to live around the trees in the compound. We put food out for him just as if he were in an enclosure. In fact we put the food inside a vacant one. We leave the door open, he goes in at mealtimes. Early morning he meets me in the area in front of our house. He takes the banana I offer him for his breakfast. This has become a regular routine.
There are now a number of our children free in the trees. Silvia the wild one is still with us. Nikii spends most of her day with Silvia, only returning home at mealtimes and to sleep at night. Eric as I have already described, though I didn’t mention that he sleeps in the comfortable house where he eats. Maria Teresa is often out and about. She is the supreme escape artist.  We make no great effort to return her to her enclosure. She always asks me when she wants to return.
The one mystery I am pondering is why Eric and Silvia don’t get together. I suppose it’s just like humans, some people you like and others you can do without.

I hate to beg but for the children I sink my pride.

No doubt, Christmas is an expensive time for everyone and this year with inflation running at an all time high, the situation is worse. At Cañaote the situation is particularly difficult. The increase in the annual payments to staff and the inflated price of the monkeys food and critically, the loss of our car to bandits at gunpoint, has left me worrying about how to get through the month. This month we have accepted two more monkeys and have received several more requests for a home. Never in the 17 years that I have worked with unwanted or abused monkeys has my work been more needed.

My finances are very slender. I only have my small British pension and this has not increased in  all the time I have been here.
Please if you can, make a donation this Christmas. I would not ask if we did not need it. I hate to beg but for the children I sink my pride.

I wish you all a peaceful and safe Christmas.
We of course will be with the children. As always caring for their happiness and welbeing.

Kindest regards Philip Cordrey.

Philip Cordrey.

There was an old woman who lived in a shoe.

There was an old woman who lived in a shoe,
She had so many children, and loved them all, too.
She said, "Thank you Lord Jesus, for sending them bread."
Then kissed them all gladly and sent them to bed.

Front Daniel. Behind him Samantha. The little person to the right is Katty.
This is all part of their 'go to bed', routine. They are all too young to sleep in the enclosure, so they sleep in my quarters until they are old enough.
To begin with, having had an exhausting day playing, they catch a nap in the box that you see. This reminded me so much of the nursery rhyme that I couldn't resist quoting a version of
it for you.

Later when I return, they have supper and then settle down for the night. Revallie is at 5.30. That's when they all move out into their day time domain.

Saving the children of the rain forest.

The environmental news around the world is not encouraging which lead me to make this short video. Yes, you do need reminding. The battle to save the planet for future generations has hardly been joined. The great issues, the Rain Forrest, Greenhouse Gasses, remain unsolved. A lot of talk the talk but no walk the walk.

Saving the children of the rain forest.

At Canaote Monkey Rescue Center, I believe we are in the front line in the fight to save the Rain Forrest. but what does that mean? Why save it. Why not cut down those useless trees that bar the way to glorious roads that could connect the cities of the continents. So that we can make more cars and make way for more bio fuel farming  to feed these guzzlers. Clear away all that untidy green stuff and plant useful things like corn for fuel.

Our answer is short and simple. No trees  no oxygen.

The final link you may think is self serving. We save monkeys who have been deprived of their homes and their families killed. We provide a safe, clean environment for them to live their lives in dignity. We provide them with wholesome food and veterinary care. We lecture at local schools and Universities. I think our work is important. So much so that I have devoted my life to this cause.

Our ability to do this well has been disrupted by our vehicle being stolen at gun point by bandits. All our personal funds are devoted to the monkeys in our care. For that reason we are appealing to everyone who is concerned with the well being of these children, to donate something. Check the link below.
 If you are in Venezuela you might like to donate directly to me in local currency. But check the link. It is important.
Please put a penny in the old mans hat.
If you haven't got a penny a half penny will do.
If you haven't got a half penny. God Bless you.

Appeal for funds to replace Canaote's van.

Katty making a good start

There is a special time in every parents experience that is unforgettable. First word, first step, first birthday. My picture show such a moment in the life of Katty a small red monkey. I think the picture needs a little more explanation. When a new young monkey arrives at Canaote we have to think carefully about the environment we select for him/her. When they are very small, for example Samantha, Daniel and Katty, they will spend the first months of their lives here, with me 24/7, in my quarters and on my shoulder.. Gradually over a period of time we test various environments for them. Sometimes they will join an existing group. Maria Teresa for example joined MonaLisa  and Kirin. On other occasions they may form a group of their own. Much depends on the attitude of the existing monkeys in the enclosure and of course the type of enclosure available. Just like humans, monkeys have their likes and dislikes. Another important consideration is the hierarchical nature of monkey society. This is not the place for a detailed examination of monkey society but suffice it to say that dominant alpha monkeys will not tolerate the children of another male. Infanticide is common among howler monkeys. So we would not consider placing a young male in an enclosure with an alpha adult.

The period during which the young monkeys are with me, they will sleep and eat in my quarters. As they become competent at feeding themselves and climbing, we take the next step, which is to allow them, during the day, to play in an outside enclosure. That is the situation at this moment with Samantha and Daniel. Early in the morning, I transfer them to a location adjoining my quarters, where they will spend the day. In the evening I will collect them and bring them back to my quarters. This way I can continue to monitor their progress.
The special moment I spoke of at the beginning, refers to Katty making her first move away from my shoulder, to joining the others on the ropes which span my quarters and in the feeding place. This shows a shift in her thinking away from me and to the group.  On this first occasion she soon found her way back to my shoulder but it was a good start lasting at least a hour.

The King of Spain's daughter.

Katty arrived at Canaote in the afternoon, last Saturday. She is a baby of only two months. She is the third small child to be brought to us in just a few months. The scandalous trade in wild life goes on unabated,. When oh When will the authorities act decisively to stop this wicked trade? This poor little mite torn from her mother and the mother assassinated.
Our picture shows her this morning in a small nut tree in front of our compound. She liked it yesterday so here we are again today. It brought to mind the nursery rhyme, 'I had a little nut tree'. Particularly because the original poem told of the visit of King Ferdinand of Spain, with his daughter Katherine or modern nick name 'Katty'. Read on.

So what has it to do with our baby Katty?

I had a little nut tree,
Nothing would it bear
But a silver nutmeg,
And a golden pear;
The King of Spain's daughter
Came to visit me,
And all for the sake
Of my little nut tree.

Her dress was made of crimson,
Jet black was her hair,
She asked me for my nut tree
And my golden pear.
I said, "So fair a princess
Never did I see,
I'll give you all the fruit
From my little nut tree.

The characters in the nursery rhyme 'I had a little nut tree' are believed to refer to the visit of the Royal House of Spain to King Henry VII's English court in 1506. The 'King of Spain's daughter' refers to the daughter of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. There were two daughters, Princess Juana and her sister Katherine of Aragon. The princess in the nursery rhyme is probably Katherine of Aragon who was betrothed to Prince Arthur, the heir to the throne of England. Arthur died and Katherine eventually married King Henry VIII. It was sad that "So fair a princess" had such a difficult life with Henry as she was the first of Henry's six wives and discarded by the King to make way for Anne Boleyn. Queen Katherine was much loved by the British people who hated her replacement, who they called 'The Great Whore'. The young, beautiful princess relates to the young Katherine, as a princess and is immortalised in this old nursery rhyme .

Y una pera de oro;
La hija del rey de España,
Vino a visitarme,

Black Sapote time.

Our picture shows poor Daniel fighting off a crowd of monkeys wanting their share. Even the wild girl Silvia has joined the attack. In the bowl there is a large helping of Black Sapote just collected from our arboretum. From time to time I have shown you various fruits that we have available. This is the second time we have had a large crop of Black Sapote. It seems that each time the harvest is bigger. The monkeys love them. One of the benefits we derive from our botanic garden, is the large number of tropical fruit we have available to augment the children's meals. We are able to make our own significant contribution to the feeding of our children from the garden.

But what does the meat of the fruit look like close up?  Our picture below. Its very dark brown/purple. Sticky with a consistency of shoe polish. A taste out of this world.

 Diospyros digyna, the Black Sapote, is a species of persimmon that is native to eastern Mexico and Central America south to Colombia. Other names include Chocolate Pudding Fruit, Chocolate Persimmon and (in Spanish) Zapote

Zapote negro.

Loki the baby howler in the Smithsonian National Zoo is dead.

I was very saddened today to hear that Loki, the baby black howler monkey in The Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, has died.
I am not happy with the way the zoo have  handled this. Firstly for months after the baby was born they declared it was a boy. I pointed out their error and even sent them photographs to prove it. They went into denial. They never admitted their error. Now I hear from a correspondent on the friends of the Zoo page on Facebook that she has died. But no official announcement. Maybe politically to soon after the death of their Panda Cub. They are now in official mourning for the Panda baby. But no word about Loki. Again they have gone into denial.

I really don´t understand why they have Howlers in the zoo. They are not high risk endangered. They are in an entirely inappropriate climate. They admit themselves they have had no luck raising baby howlers for many years. I wonder sometimes if it is just for the benefit of the crowd of vets and trainees. All wandering about with their face masks and rubber gloves. I wonder how she died?

Me pregunto cómo murió?

Water, Water everywhere but not a drop to drink.

My story begins more than 18 years ago, when I bought Canaote. At that time, the water came from an old well nearby the house. I was told by the original owner that he had installed the pump some 20 years before. So that pump had worked daily for 38 years. One day a year ago, the pump ceased to work. Recently we discovered that the weather had finally eaten through the plastic covering of the electric cable and shorted out the pump. In spite of expert attention, it was found impossible to find the spare parts needed to repair the pump. This was a potentially disastrous situation as we depend entirely on that well for our water. Water for ourselves, washing, showering, clothes, and of course the water for the monkeys in our care. The situation became critical when we found that it would cost about 1500 US$ to replace the pump. We simply did not have the money.

We had some help. The Co Op that operates nearby started to fill our tank with river water, using their petrol driven pump. They did this once a day. This provided water for all non potable purposes, showering, washing dishes etc. The local Co Op are good men, and we have had an excellent relationship with them, basically always helping each other where possible.

A neighbour, some ten minutes walk away, has a pure water well. She allowed my staff to visit daily to fill a milk churn with water. At first this was an easy task. The churn was loaded into our car, Ford Bronco, and driven the short distance. This all changed when the car was stolen. Now it was necessary either to shift the churn either by motorbike, one person holding the churn whilst the other drove, or by pushing it to the well using a wheel barrow. Altogether it had become an unpopular but necessary daily chore.

I publicized our plight on Facebook and our Blog. Soon there were many expressions of sympathy but nothing practical. We needed funds to buy the pump, to transport it when it was purchased, then for it to be fitted. An unexpected cost was the ravage of time on the infrastructure. Much of the heavy metal  tubing and most of the electric cable had to be replaced. The rubber tubing in particular, was a big number. Some two hundred meters from the well to the tank on a small adjoining hill had to be renewed.

Finally a few weeks ago the offer came and the pump was purchased. A few days ago the pump arrived here in Canaote. Yesterday the pump was submerged and the first water pulled up from a our deep well. Today, our original water tank was cleaned of the silt that had collected from the river water and pure mountain water once again flowed into Canaote.
The pump  purchased completely by one party. Significant contributions were made by others which paid for the installation and the replacements to the infrastructure.
 They have our deep gratitude I have not named them to protect them against unsolicited requests.
I think the pictures speak for themselves. In the one I am admiring the arrival of the pump and in the other I am sampling the water which could not have tasted better had it been Champaign.

St. Francis Prayer for peace.

In Venezuela, late on the 7th of October 2012, we will know which of the presidential candidates has won. Many will be overjoyed at the victory of their man. But many will be saddened and even angry because their favourite has lost. This is a time when Christians should open their hearts to forgive and to seek peace with others.
Here is the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi whose day it is today.

Peace Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi
   Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
     where there is hatred, let me sow love;
     when there is injury, pardon;
     where there is doubt, faith;
     where there is despair, hope;
     where there is darkness, light;
     and where there is sadness, joy.
    Grant that I may not so much seek
     to be consoled as to console;
     to be understood, as to understand,
     to be loved as to love;
     for it is in giving that we receive,
     it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
     and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

At Franciscan churches, a friar with brown robe and white cord often welcomes each animal with a special prayer on this day. The Blessing of Pets usually goes like this:

“Blessed are you, Lord God, maker of all living creatures. You called forth fish in the sea, birds in the air and animals on the land. You inspired St. Francis to call all of them his brothers and sisters. We ask you to bless this pet. By the power of your love, enable it to live according to your plan. May we always praise you for all your beauty in creation. Blessed are you, Lord our God, in all your creatures! Amen.
 As the prayer is offered, the pet is gently sprinkled with holy water.
Some people criticize the amount and cost of care given to pets. People are more important, they say. Care for poor people instead of poodles. And certainly our needy fellow humans should not be neglected.
However, I believe every creature is important. The love we give to a pet, and receive from a pet, can draw us more deeply into the larger circle of life, into the wonder of our common relationship to our Creator.

   Señor, haz de mí un instrumento de tu paz;
     donde haya odio, siembro yo amor;
     cuando haya injuria, perdón;
     donde haya duda, fe;
     donde haya desesperación, esperanza;
     donde hay tinieblas, luz;
     y donde haya tristeza, alegría.
    Haz que yo no busque tanto
     ser consolado, sino consolar;
     Debe entenderse, como comprender,
     ser amado como amar;
     porque dando es como recibimos,
     es perdonando que somos perdonados,
     y es muriendo que nacemos a la vida eterna.
