What is Cañaote Monkey Rescue?

'What is Cañaote Monkey Rescue all about?' what are our rules governing the treatment of the monkeys?

The follow rules all apply based on what I believe is good practice.

 1. The center is a not-for-profit operation and not a business. It is fully
 sustained by its owners.
  2. The center’s main goal is to rescue and to provide a safe-haven for injured, abused and unwanted “ex-pet” wildlife.
  3. The center aims to educate and sensitize the general public on welfare and conservation
      issues.
  4. The center does not function primarily as a tourist attraction nor is it open to the general
      public as a zoo .
  5. The center does not trade in animals, which includes buying or selling of animals, offspring,
animal by-products and animal parts, directly or through third parties.
  6. The center does not allow invasive research to be conducted on its residents.
  7. Each animal entering the center has appropriate records for the reminder of its life
at the center, which also includes its veterinary records.

B.  Animal residents’ husbandry:

a.  Freedom from hunger, thirst and malnutrition

* Fresh, clean water is available at all times.
* Food is available in large enough quantities and variety.
* Food is appropriate for the nutritional requirements of the species and individual.
* Food is kept, prepared and supplied in a hygienic manner.
* Food is available at schedules similar to the feeding times of the species in the wild.
* Animals are never be left hungry, even for an hour.
* Food is presented in a way the animal will be able to express its species-specific
   behaviors.

b.  Freedom from discomfort

* The animal’s habitat are comfortable environment to live in.
* The habitat includes shelter from external elements (e.g. rain, sunlight, cold and hot weather).
* The animal’s habitat is built in accordance to its species-specific behaviors and individual
needs. This includes furniture and furniture placement (including furniture such as ropes,
trees, other vegetation, rocks, logs, hammocks)

c.  Freedom from pain, injury and disease

* Food and water is always hygienic and sanitized.
* The habitat are built and kept in a way it cannot harm the animal (e.g. no rusty nails, no escape
routes, no glass and bottle caps thrown in by the public).
* The habitat and furniture is cleaned properly on a daily basis.
* A comprehensive preventive medicine program is in place disease prevention, and
practiced by a veterinarian knowledgeable on the species under its care.
   i
d.  Freedom to express normal patterns of behavior

* The animal  have enough space and appropriate furnishing in order to be able to
express its species-specific and individual needs and behaviors (including, and not
exclusively, locomotion, play, rest, nesting, nest-building, and feeding).
* The monkeys live in a social group, and with non-aggressive
   individuals.
* The animal can perform its natural, social behaviors such as grooming, play,
courtship, mating, and rearing of its infants.

* Orphaned and rejected infants are raised in a nurturing and social environment at all
times, giving priority to placing the infants with an appropriate surrogate.

e.  Freedom from fear and distress
* Relationships between keepers and animals is always be positive, and never allowed to
escalate into scaring, alarming, bullying or physically hurting the animal.
* Relationship between veterinarians and the animal is always be positive, and never
allowed to escalate into scaring, alarming, bullying or physically hurting the animal.
* No animal is placed near hearing/smelling/seeing distance of predators.
* Visitors are not allowed to come in direct contact with the animal residents, nor to feed the
animals, unless the animal is part of a comprehensive education program, where contact is
extremely limited. The visitors must not be sick and sanitize their hands properly before
contact. The education animal may not be part of the general population of rescued wildlife.
* The animal  have a way to hide, if it chooses, to escape the public eye.
* The animal have places located above human eye level that can be used when a
   keeper enters its habitat.
* No animal is used for entertainment purposes such as doing “tricks”.

We have a plan to build an accommodation for volunteer professionals such as undergraduate and graduate Veterinary personnel. We will also accept professionals from other disciplines such as biologists. The purpose is dual. Canaote is in 'Monkey country' and there is a wonderful opportunity to study monkeys in the wild as well as our own who are in semi captivity. In spite of years of study, the literature reveals that there are many aspects of monkey life which are unknown or barely known. Language would be an example. Howler monkeys make the same sounds for aggression for pleasure, for love making wherever they are located in South America. This program is on hold waiting for sufficient funding. We have the space. We have the will and the heart but not the money.

Secondly the volunteers would be a valuable resource in providing an economic and knowledgeable work force.

A:: Crianza de animales residentes

* Agua potable y limpia está disponible en todo momento.
* La comida está disponible en grandes cantidades y variedad.
* La comida es apropiada para las necesidades nutricionales de la especie y del individuo.
* La comida se prepara cada día y se suministra de manera higiénica.
* La comida está disponible en horarios similares a los tiempos de alimentación de las especies en la naturaleza.
* Los animales nunca se quedará con hambre, ni siquiera por una hora.
* La comida se presenta en una forma que el animal va a ser capaz de expresar su comportamiento específico de la especie

It will be Santol for breakfast.

A little while ago I showed you the Santol tree in full fruit (Sandoricum koetjape). Our Botanic Garden makes a substantial contribution to the feeding of our monkeys. Fresh fruit directly from the garden is their favourite. I happened to catch Daniel this morning, one of our helpers, returning from the garden laden with fruit for tomorrows breakfast.I thought you would like to see it.

Notes on Santol
The ripe fruits are harvested by climbing the tree and plucking by hand, alternatively a long stick with a forked end may be used to twist the fruits off. The pulp is eaten raw and plain or with spices added. It is also cooked and candied or made into marmalade. Grated pulp is cooked in coconut milk (with bits of pork and hot pepper) and served as a dish in Bicol, Philippines. Santol seeds are inedible and may cause complications such as intestinal perforation if swallowed.[3] In Thailand this fruit is used to make som tam when still not fully ripe.

Did you know that .......

'There is another monkey that lives in my dad's bedroom'.

Published field studies often miss the small things things about monkeys because, quite rightly, they are conducted in a 'hands off', manner. People who are lucky enough to work with these little people see much more because of their closeness. I list here some of the things I never see mentioned in scientific journals. Please comment if you know of more.

1 Young Howlers purr when they are content like a kitten. Sometimes even when they are sleeping.
2 Howlers urinate and defaecate over water. Usually siting on a bough overlooking a stream or river.
3 In captivity, they always defaecate in the same place.
4 Given a gift of say, pieces of fruit, they will accept only one piece at a time. Consuming first before accepting another.
5 Even the very young will attempt to join in the chorus.
6 Males sing a song which is different to the females.
7 Baby females genitalia is external and has the appearance of tiny testicles and penis. This often cause mistakes in sexing.
8 A female will abandon a new born baby if her current partner is not the father.
9 Howlers hate water. A dribbling hosepipe will send Howlers scattering to the other side of their enclosure. A technique often used by nervous helpers.
10 Howlers love Catsy/Cat chow.  In the absence of Monkey Chow try cat chow.
11 Howlers make a guttural gurgling noise, difficult to describe, similar to purring but in short bursts, when they are happy or eating a food that they enjoy.
12 Howlers stick out their tongues just before they yawn.
13 Howlers stick out their tongues to test any food before eating it. Like a built in chromatographic machine.
14 They often circle food and view it from a number of directions before eating.
15 They love to sun bathe. Frequently lying full length on their backs on a tree bough.

¿Sabía usted que .......

Foto:

A Crazy Week with Capuchins

I have had a pretty crazy week this week with nearly all the Capuchin monkeys.Toula, an adult female.  Jane, a three year old Female. Lito, a mature male.  Tabatha a young female shown with Daniel the keeper.

Many of our enclosures are old and badly need maintenance. In some cases they need completely rebuilding. The problem began when Daniel, the keeper, closed  Lito's door too vigorously. Without him noticing, this loosened a brick in the old wall. Lito and Jane were quick to find the hole and were out in the trees. The next day, Daniel did not secure the gate on Toula's enclosure. Quickly Toula and Tabitha were out. None of this would be a problem except none of the children wanted to return. Lito attacked me when I encouraged him to go back. I was surprised because we have always had a good relationship. Toula got into a lot of mischief. First she wrecked 50 trays of young plants then stole David's special grafting knife. She repeatedly smashed it with a stone. It is beyond repair. Lito entered the kitchen a number of times, leaving a trail of broken cups and plates. He carefully picked open all my tea bags and emptied them on the floor. Jane joined him in the kitchen and helped with the destruction. My housekeeper was too terrified to stop them.
Tabatha stole the knobs off the amplifier in the living room. She also took David's cellphone. We still do not know where it is. Maybe at the top of a tree or on the roof. It was an Iphone. With patience I have gradually caught them all and returned them to their homes.
The children are no worse for their experience. No one got hurt and all the monkeys are back in their enclosures. Always my first care is their welfare and I take that as a solemn task. No one was hurt during those days. Finally Lito returned to his enclosure because he was hungry and wanted the banana I offered. When he calmed down he jumped up onto my shoulder, with his tail around my neck and I walked him back home. He just behaved like a monkey. He was frightened by the situation and that's why he attacked me. I am familiar with this kind of situation and I avoided the confrontation. He was not to blame and I don't think that he has been bad. The fault was with the wall that broke and allowed him to exit. His behavior whilst he was free was typical Capuchin behavior. The hands and feet keep moving, opening bottles, banging pots all just like a Capuchin monkey.
This was a disastrous week and most of it I have been on edge, wondering how it was going to end. But the children are much loved by me and they know this. That is the reason that in the end everyone was content to go back to their homes.
Repairs have been made to the enclosures but I really have to consider a major program of reconstruction. These enclosures are nearly all old or have been damaged by the weather. This was my worse experience in all the  years I have been caring for monkeys.
There is a lot of damage and it comes at a time when I do not have grand resources to pay for the work.

Black Howler monkey born in Washington National Zoo.

The baby needs a name and the Washington post have a number of suggestions. You can choose which you prefer. The vote finishes on Friday when they will announce the babies name.

They are Sumaq, which means “beautiful” in the Quechua language; Orejas, which means “ears” in Spanish; Nando, which is short for Fernando and means “courageous”; and Loki, which is the Norse mythological god of mischief.

The voting ends on Friday, three months after the baby’s birth. The zoo plans to announce the winning name on Facebook that afternoon.
The Zoo have not yet identified the sex of the baby but I can tell you that she is a beautiful little lady. I think the name Sumaq is just right. What do you think. Tell the Washington Post. Nando is a boys name and Loki is just asking for trouble. Congratulations to the Washington National Zoo for their care and respect

Dile a The Washington Post.

Santol now in fruit.

Many people associate Canaote with the Monkey Rescue Center. Fewer realise that it is also a tropical botanic garden. Much of the food we give the monkeys comes from our own trees. I coudn't resist showing you this magnificent Santol (now in full fruit and scientific name Sandoricum koetjape) We have about 40 Santol trees. The monkeys adore this fruit. So do I.

The Donate button

If you look at the side panel you will see that I have been pounding out the story of the Monkeys of Canaote since 2006 on this blog. Of course our work here began long before that. In all some sixteen years. During that time we have made many friends. We have also been able to help a lot of monkeys. There is one curious thing. The 'Donate', button has never been used. I wonder why? Is it too mysterious? Is there a monster sitting on the other side, that will grab hold of you and steal all your money? Well of course not but it is imposing in some way. And it is a fact that it has never been used. For the brave and for the adventurous, what actually happens is that it takes you to your PayPal account. Where you can donate to our work. It is simple as that. Small or large you could donate as little as couple of dollars or make my day with a few million. Why not be the first. Give it a try. If it bites I will personally come and heal it for you.

Si te muerde yo personalmente vendré a curarte.

The story of Monalisa and the moral it teaches

On October the 29th 2001 in the canopy high above the forest floor, in a forest somewhere in northwestern Venezuela, a female howler monkey was born. She had no name because it is not the way of Howler monkeys to give each other names. She lived with her mother and her family for three short months, then boys entered the forest and shot her mother. She was kidnapped and soon she was being offered for sale at the roadside. This tragedy went unnoticed by the world; no one investigated her mother’s murder. No one wondered what had become of the little Howler monkey.

A young woman happened to be traveling along a certain road and saw a monkey being offered for sale. The boys said it was a male. But like most uninformed people, they could not really tell the difference. The female Howler has external genitals that resemble the male parts but actually are easily distinguishable. The young woman had long had the romantic idea of having a monkey as a pet. After a short negotiation she left with the little red ball of fur in a black woolen bag. She took her new pet to her apartment in Valencia. Then for one year and nine months the monkey never saw the sky, never felt rain on her face, never saw another animal, never climbed a tree. She was not unhappy. Her owner was kind and she was well fed and loved. She was also given a name. ‘Mona’, which is the Spanish word for a female monkey. Just like calling your dog ‘Dog’. Mona was of course bored. Long hours left alone in the flat whilst her owner went out to work.
One day the door was left open and Mona slipped outside to investigate. She climbed a wall into the garden of an adjoining building. She was soon spotted by children playing there. There was a great hullabaloo and the parents came out to find the cause. In due course a complaint arrived with a demand that this dangerous wild animal be removed from the apartment.
The poor distraught owner had no idea what she could do with Mona. She remembered friends in Cojedes that had wild monkeys living around their farm. She decided to call them to see if Mona could be found a new home.
She was lucky and Mona was duly transferred to her new home.
For the first time in her life she climbed trees and felt the wind and rain upon her face. She felt the warm sun and rolled over in the dirt with sheer joy. Even after two years in her new home she never ventured far from the house and only climbed the lower branches of the trees in the forest around the house. But the greatest joy was yet to come. Another young howler came to the farm, much younger than herself. At last she knew the joy of the companionship of another monkey. Her new guardians decided that something had to be done about her name. Henceforth she was to be known as MonaLisa., being a much more appropriate name for a very beautiful young lady. It is not by any means sure that Howler monkeys recognize the concept of name. A dog responds when it is called by its owner, usually by wagging its tale. I have never notice any response when a Howler is called by a name. But there, that may be just an indication of their very independent nature.
Even though I have noticed a lot of non-monkey behavior amongst Howlers in semi captivity. I can say that I have never managed to teach a Howler anything. MonaLisa for example cleans her teeth with a tooth brush after paste has been applied. (Colgate take note). She is most insistent on doing this at the same time as me. She copies me but I did not teach her to do this. She goes to the toilet in the bathroom. But again she has not been taught to do this. It’s a fact that Howlers in the forest always select a tree above a stream or river for defecation. And the loo is the nearest thing in our household to a stream.
She has a favorite blanket like many human children. She seeks this during heavy rain or thunderstorms or anything which she finds frightening. She was always joined by Sophie her younger friend although Sophie is now fully grown and lives with Schatov. It was very comical to see two heads moving about under a blanket in the middle of the living room.
Sophie treated MonaLisa like mother. She was her constant companion and they slept at night huddled together in David’s bed, heads on the pillows and under the clothes of course.

MonaLisa is now an eight year old adult. She has fostered many of our children. Most recently she taught Chilin and Eric the way of the world. And they are two very fine young monkeys.

Postcript.
This of course is not the way it should be, but it would be unwise and cruel to turn them out into the forest.
Once a monkeys or any wild animal has been living in close proximity to humans, they should never be allowed to return to their wild habitat. They can become infected with human viruses and diseases which they can transmit to other wild animals in the forest. The wild animals of course have little or no resistance to these infections. In turn, these viruses can become modified and then at some future date returned through wild pets to the human race in an even more aggressive strain.
Monkeys live in trees in the forest. And that is where they should be. Howlers make poor pets. They become unpredictable, aggressive and vindictive as they get older. For this reason, they are not a suitable pet for a young child. I have seen several young people with very severe bites from Howlers. In most cases the attacks were completely unprovoked.

They are all great characters.

Friends of Cañaote often ask me to send them photographs of a monkey that they have brought here or that they have a special love for. Quite often when people visit, one or other of the monkeys will have made a lasting impression. They are all great characters. Today I want to show you a couple of pictures of monkeys that have been requested in this way.

His name is Lito and he is an Alpha Capuchin monkey. He is much loved by his human family and they visit him very regularly. Sometimes it is not possible to continue keeping a monkey in a domestic environment. There are many reasons. The most common is that the monkey has reached adulthood and wants to establish his role in the family. An Alpha will want to dominate and this is when biting becomes a problem.
He shares with a young female Capuchin monkey named Jane.(below). Her human family also greatly care for her and visit her often. The two
live together in harmony. Sharing food and playing together.

Breakout at Canaote

'You had better come now! Maria Teresa has broken into the next enclosure.' The excited helper shouted at me as he rushed outside.
Maria Teresa came to us as a baby, just like Samantha. She was tiny and lived with me 24/7 for 6 months. At the end of that time (too long) she was introduced to Manińa who took her under his wing. This didn't stop her from spending a good part of her day, calling for me. She didn't want to accept that she was a monkey and needed to live with her own people. But on July the 8th 2009 she joined this group. At that time she was nearly nine months old.

Today she is a full grown young adult She has gone 'walkabout' once before. She has shown an
interest in Chilin in the next enclosure. This is surprising since she had the choice of Saco and Barnaby.

This morning she broke into MonaLisa's domain. Reports are that she made love with Chilin. MonaLisa does not seem disturbed and in fact sat with her like two ladies exchanging gossip.
Chilin is an interesting monkey. He is not alpha. He is a charming gentle soul. Always demanding a massage when ever I am near his house. Rather than the typical burly appearance of the alpha monkeys, he is long and tall with a magnificent coat. He played with Maria Teresa, pulling her tail and sitting as close to her as he could. There was some activity in their house. Chilin and Maria Teresa disappeared inside for a while. Then later Maria Teresa and MonaLisa took a turn inside. I understood that they were showing her around.

During all this time I receive a lot of attention. I sat with them, carefully measuring MonaLisa's reaction to the newcomer. I am certain that is is favorable. A decision had to be made, whether Maria Teresa should be returned to her own house or should remain here.
If Maria Teresa give birth, having been returned to her own cage, the baby would almost certainly be killed by one of the alpha monkeys. I don't know if she is pregnant but I cannot risk the possibility that she is. If Chilin is the father, the baby will be accepted. By him and MonaLisa.

Our picture show me receiving a lot of attention. All three monkeys. MonaLisa on my lap. Chilin in my arms and Maria Teresa on my shoulder. It looks like a new family has been formed. Grandma MonaLisa (she is now 10 years old.) and the two lovers.

Trapped in Paradise.

During the last week there has been a steadily deteriorating situation concerning access to Canaote. The bridge on the El Pau road has collapsed. Local opinion is that its back was broken by the passage of very heavy military transport, tank carriers etc.
Up to yesterday it has been possible to ford the river at Topo although the passage of heavy commercial vehicles brought this route to a standstill. Until, that is, some control was established. Younger members of the riverside communities have been supplementing their incomes by guiding vehicles across, indicating the shallow paths through the river. Fortunately, until now the heavy rains, expected, have held off. Strangely, there has been no sign of the traffic police or the police or the GN assisting  in this work. Events took a different turn today. The communities alongside the river and villages through which all this new traffic has been passing have cried 'enough!' They have been disturbed by the dust and noise caused through out the day by the unending stream of heavy commercial vehicles passing their homes. But even more they are upset by the lack of official action to repair the bridge or provide an alternative. I myself saw a small village bridge broken by this heavy traffic.
Today there are reports of vehicles being stopped and cash demanded in order to proceed. There is talk of closing these routes altogether with burning tires and vigilantes.
There are several possible routes:
Over the mountain, narrow dusty road from Aguadita. (This would also pass through the villages.)
The ford at Topo. (passes through the villages)
The ford near the Slaughter house.
There is also some talk about repairing the old Tinaco bridge that was replaced when the existing one came into use many years ago. This is at the moment in poor and unsafe condition.
At this moment we have no information on the state of the Tinaco bridge or when we can expect it to be back in use.

Our own access has been limited to taking the car as far as the Slaughter house, parking and proceeding on foot into the town. This way we have been able to buy food for the monkeys and limited supplies for the household.

We did receive brave visitors yesterday, who were guided in across a ford by one of our friends on a motorbike.

My own suggestion is that a set of military pontoon bridges be placed in the river near the Slaughter house. This would get traffic moving again and would inconvenience no one.

Our picture shows a heavy goods vehicle stuck, having passed through the river but now blocking traffic in both directions.

He walked into my life. Another off topic.

He walked into my life. I didn't buy him and I wasn't looking for another dog. He approached me, nervously at first. I offered him a handful of dog biscuits and that was that. Since then he has never left my side. Funny thing I had already agreed to take an unwanted puppy from someone in the village. I wonder if Colleta, that’s his name, knew that there might not be a second chance. He is a young dog and he is local. He arrived well fed and in good health apart from a few fleas. I made inquiries, I didn't want to steal someones dog. Yes he had a home but they were glad to see him go. He steals chicken eggs. Well I don't have free range chickens so I guess he can stay.

Off topic and nothing to do with monkeys

What is on my mind is a short non-serious break. Not many people know that I am also a magician, yes a real member of the Magic Circle. So when I saw this YouTube video I was enchanted. These two guys are funny, very funny and entertaining. I particularly liked the ballet take off. Got a spare monment? Want to LOL? then try this.

If music be the food of love, play on,

I have enclosed a link to a video showing Lorenzo in full voice. Watch it. He is the Luciano Pavarotti of the monkey world.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?list=UUIaNhfBNAo9PfyxjeQv3ZOg&feature=player_detailpage&v=FObfiNWdKh8

Duke Orsino, in Shakespeare's play Twelfth Night said, 'If music be the food of love, play on;
Give me excess of it,' This is O so true of Lorenzo and Nineta. They arrived here at Cañaote on Friday the 24 of February 2012. They came from a home where they were much loved by Gloria and Laura, their human family. I remarked at the time that I have never seen two Araguatoes so devoted to their human family. In their home in Puerto La Cruz, they were able to free range in the trees and only come to the house at mealtimes and at night to sleep. Unfortunately this perfect situation was destroyed by the action of new neighbours who attacked the children viciously with stones and machete. This resulted in the lost of an eye for Lorenzo as well as the loss of use of his right hand. In desperation and anxiety for their safety, the children were brought here. Since then Lorenzo in particular has shown grief over the loss of his human family. I have worked hard every day to acclimatize Lorenzo and Nineta. But until recently I have not had complete success. Lorenzo in particular has demonstrated that he is not at home. Nineta has got used the life here among other monkeys. Lorenzo does not join in the several call sessions we have daily. That is until Gloria gave me the key. Joining in the chorus would be the surest sign that he accepts his new friends and feels part of the family.

Music. Laura at first told me that Lorenzo sings along when  played various pieces of music.'Somewhere over the rainbow', by Israel  Kamakawiwo. and Gloria suggested, 'O me voy O Te Vas', sung by  Marco Antonio Solis.
The result of this attempt to get Lorenzo and Nineta finally settle here has been a resounding success. I was so thrilled when Lorenzo literally threw himself into the songs. When I say threw himself, Araguato lovers will know that when they call, this is accompanied by a vigorous shaking of the head.

Now even without the music, he joins in the daily calls. I am overjoyed.

We have further activity to make this pair feel at home. At the moment they have a fine enclosure with a house, a swing and rings as well as bamboo walkways but no live tree. They are happy but at home in Puerto La Cruz they had the freedom of the trees. My present work is to create an enclosure which is more high than long and includes a large, live, multi bough tree. The work is well under-way but in needs quite a bit of earth moving. Labour has proved to be unreliable. If you are a genius with the welding torch or can really throw a pick axe, you know where to call.

Much more about this later operation as the work progresses.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?list=UUIaNhfBNAo9PfyxjeQv3ZOg&feature=player_detailpage&v=FObfiNWdKh8

"Somewhere over the rainbow ', por parte de Israel Kamakawiwo.

He sits facing the window.

He sits facing the window.
A poem about a captive howler monkey suffering life in a city apartment.

He sits facing the window.
He looks out on a sky that is very small.
He sees trees that he cannot climb. And things he does not understand.
He sees a foreign land.
Filled with people not like him.

He sits facing the window.
He sees rain but does not comprehend.
He sees it but does not feel it wet against his face.
The wind blows but only scatters paper in the street.
Not a refreshing gust against which to brace.
He sees a foreign land.
Filled with people not like him.

He sits facing the window.
He looks out on a sky that is very small.
He sees trees that he cannot climb.
He sees rain but does not comprehend.
He sees it but does not feel it wet against his face.
He sees a foreign land.
Filled with people not like him

Once he had a family.
People just like him.
He remembers red tails in the sunshine.
His mothers loving face,He remembers her falling.
And the white hand tearing him away.
Now there is nothing.
Only people not like him.

Daniel celebrates his second day on earth.

This is Daniel's second day. He was born late last night to Roquacita. More about the complex story of his parenthood in another posting. But today he has been steadily gaining strength, taking nourishment and generally behaving like a young Howler Monkey.

More breaking news.

Baby made it safely through the first night.
Appears strong and hungry.
It's a boy. Name? Not yet. Want to suggest? Mail me philip.cordrey@gmail.com

He is 150 grams.

Hello World. I am going to try and make it through the night

This is Roquacita's baby born just a few minutes before this picture was taken. At first mother is bewildered and has not accepted the child. We have dried her removed the placenta. We are busy keeping her warm. As usual with Howlers there was no obvious sign that she was with child. Roquacita's enclosure is adjacent to my living quarters. I was finishing dinner when I heard a baby crying. Naturally I was puzzled and looked around. The baby was alone and cold trying to climb through the enclosure. More on the news as it happens. We have to get her through the night. Then tomorrow try and reintroduce  to the mother. At this moment we do not know whether it is a boy or a girl.

Naturalmente, me quedé perplejo y mire alrededor.
