Howler monkey. Male or female?

This posting is for the avoidance of doubt.

During the course of a month we receive quite a number of calls from the public. Many are asking for advice about feeding or health problems. Some are seeking a new home for their monkey. This later group are all too frequent these days. Our facility is small compared with the demand. We have 20 monkeys at this time with a maximum holding of 25. For this reason we have to know some things about a monkey before we can accept him. The age and sex are important for both the Capuchins and the Howlers. Monkeys have a strict hierarchy. Each group has its leader. Maybe he is benevolent to younger males but maybe not. In the wild, once he has established himself as the boss, he will kill offspring that are not his but this behavior is considerably modified by domestication. His wife/wives may accept another female but maybe not. Really it is a question of suck it and see. Where the situation becomes even more complicated is when the caller mistakenly identifies their monkey as being male because he appears to have a male organ. Unfortunately some female monkeys like the Howlers do have external genitals that have the appearance of a small penis and tiny testis. I am showing a photograph of Maria Teresa’s undercarriage and she is definitely a lady. All I can tell you is that the male Howler, even when young has a large pair of testicles, and an equally obvious penis. There can be no doubt. If in doubt it is a female.

Mono aullador. ¿Macho o Hembra?

Durante el transcurso de un mes recibimos un gran número de llamadas del público. Muchos están pidiendo asesoramiento sobre la alimentación o problemas de salud. Algunos están buscando un nuevo hogar para su mono. Este último grupo es muy frecuente en estos días. Nuestro centro es pequeño comparado con la demanda. Tenemos 20 monos en este momento con una participación máxima de 25. Por esta razón, tenemos que saber algunas cosas acerca de un mono antes de que podamos aceptarlo. La edad y el sexo son importantes tanto para los capuchinos como para los aulladores. Los monos tienen una jerarquía estricta. Cada grupo tiene su líder. Tal vez él es benevolente con los machos más jóvenes, pero tal vez no. En la naturaleza, una vez que se ha establecido a sí mismo como el jefe, va a matar crías que no son suyas, pero este comportamiento es considerablemente modificado por la domesticación. Su esposa tal vez pueda aceptar otra hembra pequeña. Realmente se trata de una cuestión de observación. La situación se complica aún más cuando la persona que llama identifica erróneamente a su mono como macho porque parece tener un órgano masculino y dos testículos. Desgraciadamente, algunas monas como los aulladores tienen genitales externos que tienen la apariencia de un pene pequeño y un pequeño par de testículos. Estoy mostrando una fotografía de María Teresa y ella es definitivamente una dama. Todo lo que puedo decir es que el aullador masculino, incluso cuando es joven tiene un gran par de testículos y un pene muy escondido. No puede haber ninguna duda.
