Sofia joins the family.

On Tuesday we had a surprise visitor. Suzanne, Toula’s human mother came on another visit. She is becoming a regular face here at Canaote. The surprise was that she brought with her a friend, Rudy, and Rudy brought her young female Capuchin, Sofia. In my pictures you can see Rudy with Sofia. Rudy explained to me that she was having some problems with Sofia. She told me that she lived in an apartment and this was causing some difficulties especially when they had visitors. All monkeys are very territorial and tend to aggressive activities when they perceive an invasion. I gave Rudi a few ideas on how to get around this situation. I didn’t at that moment realise that she wanted Sofia to stay with me. When this became clear, I explained that in normal circumstances we would not accept any more Capuchin Monkeys. With the change in the facility at the main ARFA site, I said I would accept up to 5 Capuchins and that number had already been exceeded. My limit is based on purely economic grounds. Because of their superior dexterity, Capuchin monkeys are much more expensive to accommodate. Firstly they need a much more secure environment and they require much more attention in cleaning and feeding. Again because of their unstable emotional responses, we need a much more aware calibre of helper. Capuchin bites can be vicious and dangerous. Attacks can be precipitated for no apparent reason. Often this is the reason donors want to find another home for their monkeys.
However at this particular moment we had a lonely male Capuchin. In this case a female would be welcome. We accepted Sofia on the understanding that she would have to be compatible with Oliver our male. Sofia spent her first night with me in my quarters. It was too late to begin the process of introduction to Oliver. The following day we arranged a meeting. It is usually to do this by putting the new comer in a small cage and leaving it in the vicinity of the enclosure. We gradually move the cage closer until finally we put it inside the new enclosure, and all the time monitoring the reaction of both monkeys as they acclimatise to each other.
We chose a bad day. There was a pending attack from wild monkeys and this was taking all Oliver’s attention. We countered by setting off some fireworks which frightened the wild monkeys away. We have formerly had some very bad experiences with wild capuchin monkey attacks on our facility with very serious injuries. Formerly we would fire a shotgun a few times, away of course from the monkeys. The sound alone causes them to scatter. These days we use fireworks which are just as effective and with much lower risk. The attackers disappeared but it was too late to save the meeting, the monkeys were too excited. Sofia then spent another night in my quarters. I discovered that she really likes watching T.V. All the time we were getting to know each other and she came and sat with me.
The next day we tried again with the same routine described above. Oliver seemed to accept her but this time she found a hole in the enclosure and as soon as she was released she appeared on my shoulder outside the enclosure. (see the picture.) We need some cement to repair the gap and this cannot be done for a few days. Christmas and New Year celebrations have severely limited the number of staff available for this work. In the meantime Sofia will stay with me. I must admit she is a pretty and clever
companion.

Sofía se une a la familia.

El martes tuvimos una visita sorpresa. Suzanne, la madre humana de Toula vino con otra persona. Ella se está convirtiendo en una cara regular aquí en Canaote. La sorpresa fue que había traído con ella a su amiga, Rudy, y Rudy llevó un capuchino hembra joven, Sofía. En mis fotos se puede ver a Rudy con Sofía. Rudy me explicó que estaba teniendo algunos problemas con Sofía. Ella me conto que ella vivía en un apartamento y esta era la causa de algunas dificultades, especialmente cuando tenían visitas. Todos los monos son muy territoriales y tienden a actividades agresivas cuando perciben una invasión. A Rudi le di unas cuantas ideas sobre cómo evitar esta situación. No supe en que momento ella deseaba que Sofía se quedase conmigo. Cuando esto quedó claro, le explique que en circunstancias normales, no aceptaríamos más monos capuchinos. Con el cambio de las instalaciones en el lugar de ARFA que era la principal, donde si se recibian capuchinos, dije que iba a aceptar hasta 5 Capuchinos y ese número ya se había superado. Mi límite está basado en razones puramente económicas. Debido a su destreza superior, los monos capuchinos son mucho más caros para acomodar. En primer lugar se necesita un entorno mucho más seguro y requieren mucha más atención en la limpieza y la alimentación. Una vez más, porque sus respuestas de inestabilidad emocional, necesitamos un calibre mucho más conscientes de ayuda. Las mordidas de capuchino pueden ser fuertes y peligrosas. Los ataques pueden ser precipitados sin ninguna razón aparente. A menudo, esta es la razón de las personas que quieren encontrar otro hogar para los monos.
Sin embargo, en este momento particular había aqui un mono solitario capuchino. En este caso, una hembra sería bienvenida. Aceptamos a Sofía, en el entendimiento de que ella tendría que ser compatible con Oliver nuestro macho. Sofía pasó su primera noche conmigo en mi habitación. Era demasiado tarde para comenzar el proceso de introducción con Oliver. Al día siguiente se organizó una reunión. Por lo general, para hacer esto ponemos al recién llegado en una pequeña jaula y lo dejamos en las inmediaciones del recinto. Poco a poco se mueven más cerca de la jaula hasta que finalmente lo ponemos dentro de la jaula nueva, y todo el tiempo controlamos las reacciones de los monos, hasta que se acostumbren el uno al otro.
Elegimos un mal día. Hubo un ataque de los monos salvajes que viven por aqui y esto fue tomando toda la atención de Oliver. Hemos contrarrestado estos ataques con algunos fuegos artificiales que asustan a los monos salvajes a la distancia. Antes hemos tenido muy malas experiencias con los ataques de monos capuchinos silvestres en nuestras instalaciones con heridas muy graves. Anteriormente disparabamos con una escopeta varias veces al aire, lejos por supuesto, de los monos. El sonido sólo les lleva a la dispersión. Hoy en día utilizamos los fuegos artificiales que son igual de eficaces y con un riesgo mucho menor. Los atacantes desaparecieron, pero ya era demasiado tarde para salvar a la reunión, los monos estaban demasiado excitados. Sofía pasó otra noche en mi habitación. Descubrí que ella realmente le gusta ver televisión Todo el tiempo estábamos conociendonos mutuamente y ella vino y se sentó conmigo.
Al día siguiente lo intente de nuevo con la misma rutina descrita anteriormente. Oliver pareció aceptarla a ella, pero esta vez se encontró con un agujero en el recinto y tan pronto como fue liberada ella apareció en mi hombro fuera del recinto. (ver el diagrama.) Necesitamos cemento para reparar la brecha y esto no se puede hacer en pocos días. Las celebraciones de Navidad y Año Nuevo han limitado el número de personal disponible para este trabajo. Mientras tanto, Sofía se quedará conmigo. Debo admitir que es una compañera y muy inteligente.
