Original species thriving in the wild

Canaote is a rescue centre for monkeys but we are also a large and serious botanic garden. Recently when someone saw this Oncidium species on one of our Mango trees they observed that we also rescue orchids. This Oncidium ampliatum was first recognised, in the forest, by David some years ago and he was horrified to find pieces of it on the ground in the local forest soon after a violent storm had hit the area. David rescued it and brought it to its new location. This rescue occurred about a year ago. The original piece was sans flowers so we are very happy to see its recent reincarnation on the Mango tree in front of our house, with its small, brilliantly yellow flowers. There are of course many Oncidium hybrids in cultivation which are larger and more floriferous but it is so refreshing to see the original species thriving in the wild at a time when we are losing so many species.

Especies originales que crecen salvajemente.

Cañaote es un centro de rescate para monos, pero nosotros también tenemos un jardín botánico grande y serio. Recientemente cuando alguien vio esta especie de Oncidium crecer de nuestros árboles de Mango ellos observaron que nosotros también rescatamos las orquídeas. Esta ampliatum de Oncidium fue la primera reconocida, en el bosque, por David hace algunos años y él se horrorizo por encontrar pedazos de él poco después en la tierra en el bosque loca, porque una tormenta violenta había roto el área. David lo rescató y lo trajo a un nuevo sitio. Este rescate ocurrió hace un año. El pedazo original floreció, por lo que nosotros estamos muy contentos al ver su reciente reencarnación en el árbol de Mango delante de nuestra casa, con sus flores pequeñas, brillantemente amarillas. Hay muchos híbridos de Oncidium, este es un cultivo más grande y más florido y esperamos para ver las especies originales que crecen en estado salvaje.
