Necessity is the mother of invention.

Howler monkeys love playing with hoops. Yes Hullah hoops. They swing on them for hours and a monkey with a hoop is never bored. Unfortunately, hoops are not very robust. Our first picture left, shows what happens to the hoops after only a few days. We have tried everything to reinforce the hoops including doubling with a second hoop and securing with strong plastic links. In just a few days, these expensive hoops are reduced to rubbish as you can see in our second picture.
There has been a recent change in the cycling habits of the local population. Many people have abandoned their bicycles in favour of motorbikes. I supposed there must be a large number of abandoned bikes and their accessories. I was right. An inquiry with one of the villagers revealed that there were a large number of wheels which were no longer required as spares. I was welcome to help myself. Our picture above shows the first batch of wheels to arrive. We removed the spokes and painted the wheels bright jolly colours. See right. We experimented with two hoops in Barnaby s enclosure and they were a great success. We will be putting three hoops in each of our eight enclosures. A blue, a yellow and a green. Problem solved. More hoop pictures when they have all been installed.

Welcome Jake, you have come home.

A good friend of Canaote Rescue centre, recently visited Merida.. There he discovered a very young Howler monkey. The monkey was dirty and covered in his own faeces. He was kept in a small chicken cage which had not been cleaned since the chickens vacated it. The owners had literally discarded the little monkey as being of no interest.and no value. My friend had no difficulty in taking the little fellow away. He called me and I was able to tell him to bring the baby to Canaote. My friend must be congratulated on rescuing this little boy.
When the monkey arrived here he was terrified of human contact. Obviously he had experience the worst of human negligence.
At Canaote Jake, that is his new name, has joined up with Cosito. It is early days but it looks as if the two young Howlers will be good friends. Since he arrived here last Friday night he has been in my company 24/7. Every morning when I visit Barnaby and his group, I take Cosito and Jake with me. They are both accepted by the others and no doubt when they are a little older, they will join this group in their enclosure. Welcome Jake, you have come home.

Bienvenido Jake.
Bienvenido  Jake a casa.

Update: Teodoro and Sophia

Our first picture shows Teodoro, the big one and Sofia his little surrogate sister. How she has grown since we last showed you photographs of these two. They live at Pozo Suruapo, which is at San Jose de los Altos in the mountains near Caracas. We have told their story previously on the blog but is good to see how well they have got used to each other. Natacha and German, the owners of the Pozo have built a wonderful enclosure for the two friends which overlook the mountains but is completely safe for the monkeys. Teodoro and Sofia play together all day with the beautiful backdrop of the mountains. I have stayed at the Pozo Suruapo and sampled their hospitality. A great place for a short break, a wedding or a place to get away from it all.

Me he quedado en pozo Suruapo y he recibido una gran hospitalidad.

Barnaby loves his little brother.

Well Cosito isn't actually Barnaby's brother but to see them together you would think so. This is all the more remarkable because Barnaby is approaching adulthood. Adult Howlers are nearly always aggressive against young males. For example Lucio, Schatov and now Eric would like to harm Cosito. In our picture you can see that Barnaby is giving Cosito a brotherly cuddle. He is genuinely fond of the little fellow. I take Cosito into Barnaby's enclosure every day and at once Cosito looks around for his friend and protector. There is a little jealously between Maria Teresa and Barnaby because Maria Teresa wants to mother Cosito. All her mothering instincts come into play and she wants to put her arm around him and give him a kiss.
The other boys, Tutti and Saco are too busy eating their breakfast and to a great extent they ignore the youngster. On the first occasion they showed a little interest. Now he joins them for their breakfast and there is no fighting over the food. Cosito is only seven months old so I have been surprise with the way he has adapted to using the facilities. He races around the walkway, he loves losing himself in the hammock. He is still too young to be left alone with the group because he does get into problems occasionally. For example a foot stuck in the cords of the hammock. But it won't be long now until he is able to join this group. He is already welcome as you see from the picture.

Toula joins Sofia and Jane.

Toula is a lady Capuchin monkey now aged about 7 years. As you see she is pretty and very intelligent. She uses her tail like another hand. Many people are surprised when standing close to her, to find that she is emptying their pockets with her tail.
Her human family were naturally very upset to leave her with us. She had lived with them for all of her years. Like many monkeys who come to us, she was the subject of a family conflict. They had to find a new home for her. At first she went to a Caracas zoo but they told the family that they could not accept her for more than a few days. Toula was very unhappy in the zoo and began to scratch her arms, legs and tail. This caused a considerable loss of fur in all those areas. This is an anxiety reaction and a warning sign of depression. Yes monkeys suffer mental problems just like humans. Lucio’s mum is a friend of Toula’s family. When she heard of Toula’s problem, she telephoned me to see if we have a vacancy for a young lady capuchin. The answer was yes we have a place, possibly with our lonely Capuchin male, Oliver. To begin with she shared with Chiquatin and Zeus. Introduction to Oliver just didn't work out. She was not interested and he made no effort at a relationship. However she settled down very quickly and got over the grieving for the loss of her human family. Oliver is an older monkey and set in his ways. Accepting Toula was too much of a challenge for him. We tried inviting her to share with Jane and Sofia. This worked out very well. She was soon accepted as one of the family.
The only remaining problem was the addition financial burden. It is another mouth to feed and tend. The cost of care of a monkey in Canaote is no less than that in their original human homes. Food, Veterinary charges and staff like everything else, are growing expenses. But there can be no compromise when it comes to a baby’s health and well-being.

We solve a critical problem for many people. ‘Where can I take my monkey, now that I can no longer maintain him?’ We have twenty monkeys in our care. That is twenty problems solved for human families. Some owners visit often and are generous with gifts of food and money. But they are a small group who continue to care. Others could do more.
Our photograph is Toula soon after joining Sofia and Jane in their enclosure. More about their relationships in a later post.

Toula's human mother is at present taking a course in Indonesia and in spite of the great distance she enquires about Toula often and makes a generous and regular donation every month.

Handsome Marco.

We thank Gabriela for this wonderful photograph of Marco. Just recently Gabriela's picture of Marco appeared on Facebook. Both Marco and his wife Emma spent their early lives at Canaote. Emma's history goes even further back to the ARFA facility at Hidra. We have some video of her at ARFA as a tiny tot. But amazingly you would be in no doubt that it is her. Her face always looks sad but in fact she is a comic with a serious face and that is the best way I can describe her. She moved from Canaote to Manrique when Marco was in severe depression at the loss of his wife, Vicky. The story is told elsewhere on the blog but suffice it to say that her wonderful love and her strong character soon won him over and now they are the perfect pair. Always together, Marco also lived at Canaote when he was small. He was no bigger than the fist of my hand. Looking at the beautiful sheen on his coat you can see he is in the peek of good health. You can see from the width of his tail, he is a very big monkey.  He was fostered by Sussy whose picture you can see at the top of the left hand column.

Hermoso Marco

I'd walk a million miles for one of your smiles!

Mammy! I'm comin'! Oh God, I hope I'm not late. Mammy! Don't ya know me? It's your little baby! I'd walk a million miles for one of your smiles! My Mammy!

Yes it's Cosito stealing the limelight. No! Ice cream is not good for monkeys. Yes you are a better man than me if you can stop him doing something once he has made up his mind.

This ice cream was home made from fresh apples and eggs with real cream.

¡Mamita! Ya llegue'! Oh Dios, yo espero no haber llegado tarde. ¡Mamita! ¿No me conoces? ¡Mamita!
Sí es Cosito que roba cámara. ¡No!

Schatov and Sophie.

Schatov and Sophie have lived together for more than a year. In appearance he is a typical demanding macho monkey. He roars, he puffs himself up like the great warrior that he is. Not many of us know that behind this facade of virility, he is a sweet gentle and loving person. The truth is that Schatov is Sophie's second husband. Toto her former spouse released himself into the forest. She was alone for some time. She was not interested in the attentions of other monkeys, although we tried introductions. Finally Schatov persistently escaped from his enclosure and made his way across the canopy to her. He would sit for hours above her garden. She played hard to get and did not instantly accept his overtures. We open the door to the enclosure and Schatov hopped in. Since then they have been inseparable. They are a truly happy pair and we hope that one day they will have a child.

Schatov y Sophie.

Peace.

Top left Eric with Roquacita and since we don't often show you pictures of Eric. Here is another one of him bottom. Look carefully and you can still see the bloody nose that MonaLisa gave him. There is also a small cut over the left eye. In the picture they are lying on Roquacita's bed. Roquacita has been alone since she came to us and we have been hoping that one of our boys would prove a suitable match. Eric has shown an interest. On a number occasions he visited her but only for a short trips. Roquacita gave him a less than warm welcome yesterday but last night the tension eased off and by this morning they were sitting together and even sharing food.
This has every sign of a successful match. I will keep you posted.

I have been giving some thought to the fracas that occurred between Eric and MonaLisa. In the wild, when a young adult reaches maturity, he is turned out of the troop, so that he can find his own way and build his own family. I think that MonaLisa deliberately caused the friction with the intention that he would leave.

Voy a mantenerlos informados.

War.

Top MonaLisa. Middle Roquacita. Bottom Eric.
There is no doubt that Eric is in the wars and all his troubles are women. MonaLisa has lived with a monkey family since she came to us eight years ago. The family was MonaLisa, Emma, Nancy and the two young boys, Eric and Chilin. The two boys joined the family much later. Emma went off and got married to Marco. She now lives with him in Manreque . Nancy went to live with a family in Caracas. So until yesterday, the family comprised of just MonaLisa, Chilin and Eric. Now I have always regarded this as a happy family. That is until the last few days. MonaLisa got angry with Eric.I think there was a fight over food.  She had a fight and Eric started avoiding her and was becoming a loner. I decided it was time for Eric to make a move. On several occasions Eric has escaped from his quarters and gone visiting Roquacita. I assumed that the feeling was mutual. Hmm.. Not immediately so. When Eric was introduced into Roquacita's enclosure this morning he got a less than warm welcome. She puffed herself up and attacked him. More smoke and fur than blood. We will wait and see over the next few days how this works out. I think she will accept him but she wants to make sure he knows who wears the pants.

Guerra.

MonaLisa arriba.

Cosito meets the team.

This post was meant to show the whole Barnaby, Maria Teresa, Tutti and Saco group, greeting Cosito on his first visit to their enclosure. Well several things got in the way of that outcome. In the first place Cosito was very nervous. In fact he got caught short of the loo and disgraced himself. Then the team were very excited to meet their new young friend. I wanted some photographs of them all together but it was impossible to get them all in one place at the same time. Our photograph shows Maria Teresa in the foreground with Cosito on my shoulder. There were some surprising reactions. I was initially cautious about this meeting, knowing the male reaction to children of another parent. I expected Barnaby to be aggressive or at least unfriendly. I could not have been more wrong. He embraced the little one like a long lost brother. Now that was a surprise. Maria Teresa had already met Cosito through the wire of the enclosure and I knew that she wanted to mother Cosito. She hugged him and stayed with him all the while he was in the enclosure. Even Tutti and Saco were friendly. They jumped up on my lap and gave Cosito a friendly greeting.    Altogether it was a successful first meeting. My fears were unfounded.

Hoop failure.

In an earlier post I mentioned the problems we were having with hullah hoops. We set up eight enclosures with the revised design. So far only one has failed. Our picture shows the poor hoop after Eric had removed most of the binding tape and then applied his considerable weight to the hoops. We had a new hoop in reserve so that we were able to replace it at once. This time we paid a little more attention to the taping. Maybe we have not yet reached the final design for the hoop. A little more time will tell.

Monkeys love hoops.

It seems that all our monkeys love playing with hoops. Our picture shows Barnaby playing hard with his new hoop. This has been a problem for us because these hullah hoops break easily. Our maintenance area is littered with broken hoops. This week we have come up with an answer. We have doubled the hoops and lashed them together with strong tape. So far this new hoop has resisted the best efforts of the children, All our enclosures today, have new style hoops. It is important to supply monkeys in semi captivity with games to play. Boredom can cause sickness in monkeys. The hoop is an attractive sport for them and all of them enjoy doing the hoop. You may remember it was a craze for humans in the ´60´s.

It's been a busy day.

It's been a busy day for Toula, one of our Capuchin monkeys. Her day started with a shampoo. Now this was a little traumatic as she didn't know at first what was happening. She was transfered over to the house so that we could give her warm water in her shower and shampoo. Little did she realize that we had another surprise in store for her. After the shampoo drama. She was taken to the Jane/Sofia enclosure. As from today, she is to share accommodation with Jane an Sofia. After the initial surprise wore off, she soon settled into the life in the new enclosure. Its great for her to have two friends to play with. As for Jane and Sofia, they readily accepted their new roommate. The new accommodation has a many interesting features. Hammocks, rings, walkways and a whole bunch of toys. We will be monitoring her over the coming days, just to be sure she settles in and is happy in her new surroundings.
Our picture of Toula was taken late afternoon, when she was trying out the hammock.
