Los días 24 y 25 de Febrero se va a realizar una Jornada de esterilización Masiva para Perros y Gatos, en el Estado Cojedes.

Gracias a la Red de Apoyo Canino de Caracas y a nuestra amiga y colaboradora Gabriela de Olivieri, quienes han puesto su granito de arena, en este gran mar de animales abandonados, que existen en el estado, para de esta manera evitar que sigan reproduciéndose de manera descontrolada.

Esta Jornada será realizada el día viernes 24 de Febrero en Manrique y el Sábado 25 en la Unellez de San Carlos, desde las 8 A.M., los cupos son limitados por lo que te recomendamos que apartes el cupo de tu mascota lo antes posible llamando a los siguientes Teléfonos: 0258-414 8040 / 0414- 595 3434 / 0212-421 5112 / 0212-421 5116.

El precio de la cirugía es de 200 bsF., por animal.

Nikki at nine months.

Nikki at 9 months.

You will recall that Nikki was born at Cañaote now nine months ago. Her parents, papa Lucio and Mama Jaco, are very loving and caring of the little girl. In spite of Jaco complaining, Nikki can still exit the enclosure by wriggling through the wire. This is a surprise because she loves her food and eats a lot. She spend much of her day in the mango trees surrounding her home. There she meets Silvia, the wild female. Nikki is very friendly and loves to take gifts of banana from my hand. She often shares this with Silvia. But more about Silvia in another post. My picture shows Nikki on the outside of her enclosure.

Nikki a los nueve meses.

Usted recordará que Nikki nació en Cañaote ahora tiene nueve meses. Sus padres, papá Lucio y mamá Jaco, son muy cariñosos y atentos con la niña. A pesar de que Jaco se moleste, Nikki todavía se puede salir del recinto por los huecos del alambre. Esto es una sorpresa porque le encanta la comida y come mucho. Se pasa la mayor parte de su tiempo en los árboles de mango que rodean su recinto. Allí conoció a Silvia, la mona salvaje. Nikki es muy amable y le gusta tomar regalos de plátano de mi mano. A menudo comparte esto con Silvia. Les colocare una foto de Silvia en otro post. Mi foto muestra a Nikki en el exterior de su recinto.

Teodoro and Sofia at Pozo Suruapo

Teodoro and Sofia are two Araguato monkeys that are cared for by two of our close friends. I have introduced these two monkeys to you before. But recently I received some new photographs and I want to share those pictures with you. Since I saw Teodoro last, his beard has become luxuriant and his coat has a sheen that only comes with good health. Teodoro has been with his human family since he was small. Now he shares with Sofia and it has made his life more complete. Our first picture shows Teodoro, the big one and the other two are of Sofia his surrogate sister. How she has grown since we last showed you photographs of these two. They live at Pozo Suruapo, which is at San Jose de los Altos in the mountains near Caracas. We have told their story previously on the blog but is good to see how well they have got used to each other. Natacha and German, the owners of the Pozo have built a wonderful enclosure for the two friends which is large and overlook the mountains but is completely safe for the monkeys. Teodoro and Sofia play together all day with the beautiful backdrop of the mountains. I have stayed at the Pozo Suruapo and sampled their hospitality. A great place for a short break, a wedding or a place to get away from it all. And of course a very comfortable home for Teodoro and Sofia.

Teodoro y Sofía en Pozo Suruapo

Teodoro y Sofía son dos monos araguatos que son atendidos por dos de nuestros amigos más cercanos. He presentado estos dos monos antes. Sin embargo, recientemente he recibido algunas fotos nuevas y quiero compartirlas con usted. Desde la última vez que vi a Teodoro, su barba se ha convertido en exuberante y su pelo tiene un brillo que sólo viene de una buena salud. Teodoro ha estado con su familia humana, desde que era pequeño. Ahora comparte con Sofía y ella ha hecho su vida más completa. Nuestra primera imagen muestra a Teodoro, el grande y las otras dos son de Sofía, su hermana de crianza. ¡Cómo ha crecido desde la última vez que les mostré unas fotografías de ellos dos. Ellos viven en Pozo Suruapo, que se encuentra en San José de los Altos, en las montañas cerca de Caracas. Hemos contado su historia con anterioridad en el blog, pero es bueno ver lo bien que se han acostumbrado el uno al otro. Natacha y alemán, los propietarios de Pozo Suruapo han construido un recinto maravilloso para los dos amigos, que es grande y con vista a las montañas, pero es completamente seguro para los monos. Teodoro y Sofía juegan juntos todo el día con el hermoso telón de fondo de las montañas. Me he alojado en el Pozo Suruapo y la hospitalidad es insuperable. Un gran lugar para un breve descanso, una boda o un lugar para alejarse de todo. Y, por supuesto, una casa muy cómoda para Teodoro y Sofía.

I have posted before about the contribution that our arboretum makes to the welfare of our monkeys. Our pictures today show the ingredients of this mornings breakfast. Mandarin oranges, Bananas, Star Fruit, Papaya, Bacu Pari and surprise Chinese long beans. This last item is very popular. The monkeys literally fight to get them. The Araguato monkeys (Howler) eat them whole, they chomp away and seemingly there is no end to their appetite for them. On the other hand the Capuchin monkeys carefully remove the seeds and discard the skin. The vegetable grows extremely well in the Venezuelan climate and I am puzzled why it is not more popular. I have never seen it in the stores. We of course grow our own.

They are a good source of protein, vitamin A, thiamin, riboflavin, iron, phosphorus, and potassium, and a very good source for vitamin C, folate, magnesium, and manganese.

In a serving size of 100 grams of yardlong beans there are 47 calories, 0 grams of total fat, 0 mg cholesterol, 4 mg sodium (0% daily value), 8 grams of total carbohydrates (2% daily value), and 3 grams of protein (5% daily value). There is also 17% DV vitamin A, 2% DV iron, 31% DV vitamin C, and 5% DV calcium. (Percent daily values are based on a 2000 calorie diet. Individual daily values may be higher or lower depending on individual calorie needs.)

Nos autoabastecemos.

He publicado antes sobre la contribución que hace nuestro jardín botánico por el bienestar de nuestros monos. Nuestras imágenes muestran hoy los ingredientes del desayuno de esta mañana. Mandarinas, plátanos, carambolas, papayas, Bacu Pari y sorprende con los largos vainitas chinas. Este último es muy popular. Los monos, literalmente luchan para conseguirlos. Los monos araguatos (aulladores) comen todo, les encanta lo crujiente y al parecer no hay un final a su apetito por ellos. Por otro lado los monos capuchinos cuidadosamente retire las semillas y desechar la piel. La verdura crece muy bien en el clima de Venezuela y estoy sorprendido que no sea más popular en este país. Nunca lo he visto en las tiendas. Nosotros, por supuesto, tenemos nuestra propia cosecha.

Son una buena fuente de proteínas, vitamina A, tiamina, riboflavina, hierro, fósforo y potasio, y una muy buena fuente de vitamina C, fosfato, magnesio y manganeso.

Navidad en Cañaote

Sin duda, la Navidad es un tiempo costoso para todo el mundo y este año con una inflación en su punto más alto, la situación es peor. En Cañaote la situación es particularmente difícil. El aumento de los pagos anuales para el personal y los precios inflados de los alimentos de los monos, me preocupa pensando, cómo llegar a fin de mes. Este mes hemos aceptado dos monos más y hemos recibido varias solicitudes de un hogar para otros monos. En los 15 años que llevamos trabajando con monos no deseados o abusados, nunca había sido más necesario nuestro trabajo, como en estos momentos.
Mis finanzas son muy débiles. Sólo tengo mi pequeña pensión británica y no ha aumentado en todo el tiempo que he estado aquí.
Por favor, si puede, haga una donación en esta Navidad. No se lo pediríamos si no lo necesitáramos. No me gusta pedir, pero por los niños me dejo mi orgullo.

Les deseo a todos una Navidad tranquila y segura.
Nosotros, por supuesto, estaremos con los monos. Como siempre al cuidado de su felicidad y bienestar.

No doubt, Christmas is an expensive time for everyone and this year with inflation running at an all time high, the situation is worse. At Cañaote the situation is particularly difficult. The increase in the annual payments to staff and the inflated price of the monkeys food, has left me worrying about how to get through the month. This month we have accepted two more monkeys and have received several more requests for a home. Never in the 15 years that I have worked with unwanted or abused monkeys has my work been more needed.
My finances are very slender. I only have my small British pension and this has not increased in all the time I have been here.
Please if you can, make a donation this Christmas. I would not ask if we did not need it. I hate to beg but for the children I sink my pride.

I wish you all a peaceful and safe Christmas.
We of course will be with the children. As always caring for their happiness and welbeing.

Sin embargo les narro brevemente, él vivió sus primeros años de niño en Cañaote y fue criado por Sussy, con ella se convirtió en la adolescente. Finalmente se fue a vivir con Gabriela, donde vive ahora con su esposa Emma. Ellos son una pareja perfecta y él la adora. Busquen en el blog su historia. Es muy interesante.

Here are some pictures of Schatov and his wife Sophie. Schatov is the biggest of the male Araguatoes at Cañaote. These were taken this morning. I know he looks big and a bit dangerous. But beneath all that hair and that magnificent beard he is still a very nice well tempered monkey. He loves my visits. He sits on my lap and asks for a massage. He is a very proud individual. If I miss a visit, he will sit with his back to me until he thinks I have been punished enough and then he will come to me. Sophie is the perfect adoring wife. She is never more than a few meters away from him. Today we are replacing some of his big bamboo walkways. These are about 20 meters long. They deteriorate in the heavy rains and have to be replaced. He spends his day mainly in his garden. He has hoops (actually, gaily painted bicycle wheels with the spokes removed). He has a couple of hammocks and a swing and of course very extensive bamboo walkways. The table you see is where I sit when I visit him. After I have left he like to sit in my chair. I don't know what that means, he will tell me one day. He is very active and in very good health. Schatov s history is elsewhere on the bog and you can search for it.

Schatov y su esposa Sophie

Aquí están algunas fotos de Schatov y su esposa Sophie. Schatov es el mayor de los Araguatos masculinos en Cañaote. Estas fotos fueron tomadas esta mañana. Yo sé que él se ve grande y un poco peligroso. Pero debajo de todo ese pelo y esa barba magnífica sigue siendo un mono muy agradable y templado. Él ama mis visitas. Él se sienta en mi regazo y pide un masaje. Él es una persona muy orgullosa. Si me olvido de una visita, se sentará dándome la espalda hasta que él crea que he sido suficientemente castigado y luego vendrá a mí. Sophie es la esposa adorada perfecta. Ella nunca se aleja de él. Hoy estamos reemplazando algunos de sus caminos de bambú grandes. Son unos 20 metros de largo cada uno. Se deterioran con las fuertes lluvias y tienen que ser reemplazados. Él pasa el día, principalmente en su jardín. Hay aros (en realidad ruedas de bicicleta con los radios eliminados, pintados con colores alegres). Él tiene un par de hamacas, un columpio y los pasillos de bambú, por supuesto, en un área muy amplia. La mesa que se ve es donde me siento cuando los visito. I want to make aspecial appeal for a very special case. About a month ago we wereapproached by a family. This family has been very active in rescuingmonkeys and other good work amongst animals. They have at the momenttwo araguatoes (Howler Monkeys), a male and a female that theyrescued. Their location was remote, so the monkeys were free in thetrees around their home. Recently, neighbors have moved into the areaand this has presented a danger to the araguatoes. The boy has beenattacked with a machete and lost the use of one hand and on anotheroccasion they threw a stone and blinded him in one eye. At this pointthe family read an article about our work and decided to ask us toaccept these children in our community.

Unfortunately we arefull. We can only accept them if we either build a new enclosure ormanaged to modify a large existing one. All our enclosures are largeand include living trees. We have plenty of space for new enclosures,plenty of love to make it happen but short on the funds.

Wehave gone with the modify option. This being the most economical yetsatisfactory course. All that remains is to raise sufficient funds.The price of materials as you probably know has gone through the roofand experienced labor even more. Your donation will make it possibleto go ahead and offer these two monkeys a decent and safe life. Do itand make this a special Christmas for them.

Un atractivo especial para un caso muy especial.

Quiero hacer un llamamiento especial para un caso muy especial. Hace aproximadamente un mes se nos acercó una familia. Esta familia ha estado muy activa en el rescate de monos y otros animales. Ellos tienen en la actualidad dos Araguatos (mono aullador), un macho y una hembra que rescataron. Su ubicación era sin vecinos cerca, por lo que los monos eran libres en los árboles alrededor de su casa. Recientemente, hay vecinos se han trasladado a la zona y lo que ha ocasionado un peligro para los Araguatos. El mono macho ha sido atacado con un machete y perdió el uso de una mano y en otra ocasión le tiraron una piedra y quedo ciego de un ojo. En este punto, la familia leyó un artículo sobre nuestro trabajo y decidió pedir que acepten a estos niños en nuestra comunidad.

Desgraciadamente estamos llenos. Sólo podemos aceptar, si construimos un nuevo recinto o arreglamos para modificar uno ya existente de gran tamaño. Todos nuestros recintos son grandes e incluyen árboles vivos. Tenemos un montón de espacio para nuevos recintos, mucho amor para que esto ocurra, pero cortos de fondos.

Hemos decidido la opción de reparar. Esta es la opción más económica y satisfactoria. Todo lo que queda es recaudar fondos suficientes. El precio de los materiales es cada día más alto, también hay que arreglar el techo, mas la mano de obra con experiencia. Su donación hará posible que nosotros sigamos adelante y ofrecer a estos dos monos una vida digna y segura. Y hacen de esta una Navidad especial para ellos.

Creatures great and small.

If you scan the web, you will find that many churches now are holding blessing services for pets. The usual date for this is the Sunday nearest the fourth of October, which is St. Francis of Assisi’s day. Some sites on the web give a complete liturgy and order of service for the blessing. One site describes the progress to the altar, of horses and dogs, parrots, pigs, and well why not, monkeys. This is of course controversial. Are we just blessing as we would bless the corn, or the harvest? Or are we going much further than that and saying that we recognize that animals have an immortal soul and that one day we will be together again in another place? I have read the work of some very learned theologians that define what is meant by a soul. They argue that the bible makes it clear that God created man in his own image and therefore he has an immortal soul. I am of course making the point very briefly. They argue from this that animals cannot have a soul because they were not created in the likeness of God. I consider this to be a very spacious argument. Well of course a couple of points arise. One is that I don’t find anywhere in the scriptures where it tells us that you must be created in the likeness of God to have a soul. The argument becomes even more tenuous when you realize that we, the human race are descended from Monkeys. Now there is no doubt about that one. If we have an immortal soul we inherited from our beloved friend the Ape. I say go with confidence to a service of blessing for our pets, monkeys in particular, in the sure knowledge that we will meet again in the kingdom of the hereafter.
I love the reasoning in the Fitzgerald translation of the Omar Khayyam Paragraphs 61 and 62. Where it says and I quote:

There said another, surely not in vain
My substance from the common earth was ta’en
That he who subtly wrought me into shape
Should stamp me back to common earth again.

Another said, why ne’er a peevish boy
Would break the bowl from which he’d drank in joy
Shall he that made the vessel in pure love
And fansy, in an after rage destroy?

34.9 And some of the people said, This man careth for all creatures, are they his brothers and sisters that he should love them ? And he said unto them, Verily these are your fellow creatures of the great Household of God, yea, they are your brethren and sisters, having the same breath of life in the Eternal.

34.10 And whosoever careth for one of the least of these, and giveth it to eat and drink in its need, the same doeth it unto me, and whoso willingly suffereth one of these to be in want, and defendeth it not when evilly entreated, suffereth the evil as done unto me; for as ye have done in this life, so shall it be done unto you in the life to come.

Criaturas grandes y pequeñas.
Si explora la web, usted encontrará que muchas iglesias ahora tienen los servicios de bendición para las mascotas. La fecha habitual para esto es el primer domingo de octubre, que es el día de San Francisco de Asís. Algunos sitios en la web dan una liturgia completa y el servicio para la bendición. Un sitio describe los progresos realizados hasta el altar, de caballos y perros, loros, cerdos, etc., ¿por qué no, los monos. Esto es, por supuesto, controversial. ¿Es sólo la bendición como la del maíz, o la cosecha? ¿O vamos mucho más allá y decir que reconocemos que los animales tienen un alma inmortal y que un día estaremos juntos de nuevo en otro lugar? He leído la obra de algunos teólogos muy preparados para definir qué se entiende por un alma. Ellos argumentan que la Biblia deja en claro que Dios creó al hombre a su imagen y por lo tanto tiene un alma inmortal. Por supuesto, estoy haciendo el punto muy brevemente. Ellos argumentan que los animales no tienen alma, porque no fueron creados a imagen de Dios. Considero que se trata de un argumento muy amplio. Bueno, por supuesto, un par de puntos a surgir. Uno de ellos es que no encuentro el lugar en las Escrituras donde se nos dice que debe ser creado a imagen de Dios para tener un alma. El argumento se vuelve aún más tenue cuando te das cuenta de que nosotros, la raza humana desciende de los monos. Ahora no hay duda sobre eso. There is a special time in every parents experience that is unforgettable. First word, first step, first birthday. Our video show such a moment in the life of a small red monkey. He was rescued from appalling condition in Merida by a man called Jake. We named the monkey after him.
Today, and for the first time little Jake joined the morning chorus. You can see him putting body and soul into the performance. Well done little Jake, no longer a baby but a young adult. God Bless you.

Jake se une al coro

Hay un momento especial en las experiencia de los padres que es inolvidable. La primera palabra, el primer paso, el primer cumpleaños. Nuestro video muestra un momento en la vida de un mono aullador pequeño. Fue rescatado en condiciones deplorables en Mérida por un hombre llamado Jake. Hemos llamado al mono igual, en honor a él.
En este día, y por primera vez Jake se unió al coro de la mañana. Se lo puede ver poniendo cuerpo y alma en la actuación. Bien hecho porque Jake, ya no es un bebé, es un adulto joven. Dios los bendiga.

The rainy season is winding down and it is time to review some of the damage to the enclosures and plan for the very necessary repairs. This season has been exceptionally long and the rains more powerful than I remember. Many of the walkways will have to be renewed and most of the hammocks replaced. This means extra staff for a while and extra expenditure for hammocks and wood for repair and in some cases rebuild the monkey houses.

This is a heavy burden for me, especially so near Christmas, when I will have to find the annual bonus funds for the staff. This is always an anxious time for me.

A few of you will, as always send a donation to get us through this but many of you have let time go by without thinking of the child that you brought to me for care.

Our work here has never been more in demand. Two weeks ago we accepted a little girl Araguato. She was sick but now on the road to complete recovery. A few days ago we accepted a male adult Capuchin. On the phone yesterday we were being asked to take another young Araguato and yet again today a request for another female Capuchin.

Please don't leave me to shoulder this burden alone. Put your hand in your pocket and give generously. I need to give these children a good life. I must compensate for the wickedness that has brought them to my door.

Ya estamos en la temporada de lluvias y es hora de revisar algunos de los daños en los recintos y el plan de reparaciones es muy necesario. Esta temporada ha sido excepcionalmente larga y las lluvias más fuertes que yo recuerde. Muchos de los andadores tendrán que ser renovados y sustituidas la mayoría de las hamacas. Esto significa que necesitamos personal adicional por un tiempo y un gasto extra para las hamacas y las maderas para las reparaciones y en algunos casos la reconstrucción de las casitas techadas de los monos.

Esta es una carga muy pesada para mí, sobre todo tan cerca de la Navidad, cuando voy a tener que encontrar los fondos para pagar las prestaciones sociales y aguinaldos al personal. Esta siempre es una temporada que me pone muy ansioso.

Algunos de ustedes, como siempre enviaran una donación para suplir los gastos en este momento, pero muchos de ustedes han dejado pasar el tiempo sin pensar en el niño que trajeron aquí y que necesita recibir mucha atención e insumos todo el tiempo.

Nuestro trabajo aquí nunca termina siempre hay muchas solicitudes para recibir nuevos monos. Hace dos semanas, hemos aceptado a una hembra araguato. Ella estaba enferma, pero ahora está en camino de una recuperación completa. Hace unos días hemos aceptado también un capuchino adulto de sexo masculino. En el día de ayer nos solicitaron recibir otras monitas araguatos jóvenes y una vez más en el día hoy una solicitud de otro mono capuchino hembra.

Por favor, no me dejes a asumir esta carga solo. Introduce tu mano en el bolsillo y dona generosamente. Tengo que dar a estos niños una buena vida. Tengo que compensar todo el trauma que han vivido.

Last week I had a message from Dra.Grecia Marquis at Fauna Silvestre who told me that she had been treating a baby girl Araguato (howler monkey). The baby had had four of her teeth filed down and as a result had developed a severe ulceration. The Vet was able to tell me that as a result of the treatment the baby was nearly cured. But as in all these cases the monkey was in shock and terrified of humans. This dental savagery is quite common by hunters who kill the mother in order to capture the baby for sale. We were able to find a place here at Canaote for the little one. Fortunately Gabriela was in Caracas and volunteered to transport her to me. We arranged that I would meet her car in Tinaco as she passes on her way home on Friday last.

Clementina

In spite of her dreadful experience Clementina is settling down well. Clementina is a wonderful little girl. She takes her medicine when offered with no problem. She eats well. Her diet is a milk mixture offered in a small mascot baby bottle as well as Mango and Mellon, she also likes bananas. She eats everything offered. At night she has been sleeping with me. In the daytime we have an outside enclosure that we sometimes have used as a temporary dwelling. This is immediately adjoining the large enclosure of Marie Teresa, Barnaby and Saco. They of course are paying her a lot of attention. This is all part of the process of discovering where she will finally live. I am sure you all know that not all monkeys love all monkeys. So far we know that all our girls would like to mother her. It is so beautiful to see the females holding out their hands to just touch her face. Most of the boys are a little aggressive. My original plan was that she should share with Cosito and Jake because they are approximately the same age. They are curious and a little jealous. We will see over the next days. The ulcer has reduced further.

I had a horrifying experience in Tinaco that evening. I was approached by a piece of human scum who tried to sell me an Araguato. The little boy about 6 weeks old, had a contusion on his skull and an injury close to his eye. All consistent with gunshot. It broke my heart not to buy him, but I made the rule and I can still see that poor child with such fear in his baby eyes. I beg the Lord to watch over him. Pray with me.

Oh mi querida Clementina.La semana pasada recibí un mensaje de la Dra. Grecia Marquis, médico veterinario de Fauna Silvestre, que me dijo que ella había estado tratando a una niña araguatos (mono aullador). La bebé tenía cuatro de sus dientes limados y como resultado había desarrollado un absceso grave. La veterinaria me dijo que, como consecuencia del tratamiento con antibióticos la bebé estaba casi curada. Pero como en todos estos casos el mono estaba en shock y aterrorizada de los humanos. Este salvajismo dental es muy común por los cazadores que matan a la madre con el fin de capturar al bebé y ponerlo a la venta. Hemos sido capaces de encontrar un lugar aquí en Cañaote para la pequeña. Afortunadamente, Gabriela estaba en Caracas y se ofreció a transportarla hasta aquí. Quedamos en que me encontraría con ella en Tinaco cuando ella pasara hacia su casa el viernes pasado.

A pesar de su terrible experiencia Clementina está estableciéndose bien. Clementina es una niña maravillosa. Ella toma su medicina cuando se le ofrece sin ningún problema. Ella come muy bien. Su dieta es una mezcla de leche y preparados para infantes con vitaminas y minerales ofrecida en un tetero de mascotas bebés, así como Mango y Melón, también le gusta el banano. Se come todo lo que se le ofrece. Por la noche ha estado durmiendo conmigo. Durante el día la llevo al exterior y la coloco en un recinto que se ha utilizado como vivienda temporal. Esto es pegado a la parte exterior de la ventana de mi habitación, adyacente a la jaula grande de María Teresa, Barnaby y Saco. Ellos, por supuesto, están muy interesados en ella. Todo esto es parte del proceso de descubrimiento de conque grupo finalmente va a vivir. Estoy seguro de que todos sabemos que no todos los monos aman a todos los monos. Hasta el momento sabemos que todas nuestras chicas les gustaría ser la madre de ella. Es tan hermoso ver a las hembras tendiendo la mano para tocar sólo su cara. La mayoría de los machos son un poco agresivos. Mi plan original es que debía compartir con cosito y Jake, ya que son aproximadamente de la misma edad. Son curiosos y un poco celosos. Veremos en los próximos días como va todo. El absceso se ha reducido aún más.
Tuve una experiencia horrible en Tinaco mientras esperaba que llegara Gabriela con la monita. Se me acercó un pedazo de escoria humana que trató de venderme un araguato. El niño de aproximadamente 6 semanas de edad, presentaba una herida fuerte en su cráneo y una estrecha herida en el ojo. Consistentes de arma de fuego. Me rompió el corazón pero no lo compre, porque tengo una regla y es no comprar fauna silvestre, pero aún recuerdo la carita de ese pobre bebé, con ese miedo en los ojos. Ruego al Señor que cuide de él. Ora conmigo.

The Simian Samaritans.

I call them the Simian Samaritans because they arrive with needed gifts for the children and are always willing to take off their coats and help with some of the not so popular tasks around the compound. Cleaning out enclosures has to be done and every day. Monkeys are not tidy people. This time they brought with them a packet containing a bunch of hammocks. Now if there is one thing that monkeys love it is hammocks. I am grateful for the gifts and very happy to see their continuing love for the children of Cañaote. Their arrival coincided with my return with a new member of our monkey family, a little girl called Clementina. The Samaritans were able to greet the new arrival. Los samaritanos de monos

Yo los llamo los samaritanos de monos porque llegan con regalos necesarios para los niños y siempre están dispuestos a quitarse sus abrigos y ayudar con algunas de las tareas no tan populares en todo el recinto. La limpieza de recintos que hay que hacer todos los días. Los monos no son personas ordenadas. Esta vez trajeron con ellos un paquete que contiene un montón de hamacas. Ahora bien, si hay una cosa que los monos aman son las hamacas. Estoy muy agradecido por los regalos y muy feliz de ver su continuo amor por los hijos de Cañaote. Su llegada coincidió con mi regreso con un nuevo miembro para nuestra familia de monos, una niña llamada Clementina. Los samaritanos saludaron a la recién llegada. Pero más adelante escribiré un post de ella con fotos, por supuesto.

Sylvia the wild one

The Canaote compound is situated in a valley in North Western Venezuela. The forests on the side of the valley are heavily wooded. This is monkey country. Hundreds of Araguato (howler) and Capuchin monkeys live here. Sylvia is a wild lady Araguato. She has attached hereself to our site and spends her days above one or other of the enclosures holding male adult aruguatoes. She is particularly interested in Lucio. The father of Nikki. Nikki enjoys wriggling through the wire and playing with Sylvia. Our video shows Sylvia collecting an orange that I had laid out for her. She is not tame. Nikki is also seen alongside her. Sylvia la mona silvestre

El Centro de Rescate Cañaote está situado en un valle en el noroeste de Venezuela. Los bosques en el lado del valle son muy boscosos. Este es un sitio de monos. Cientos de monos araguatos (aulladores) y capuchinos viven aquí. Sylvia es una mona araguato salvaje. Ella se ha unido a nuestro centro y se pasa el día encima de uno u otro de los recintos de Monos araguatos machos adultos. Ella está particularmente interesada en Lucio. El padre de Nikki. Nikki disfruta retorciéndose a través del cable y jugando con Sylvia, porque ella puede salir del recinto porque es muy pequeña y pasa a través de la reja. In a conversationrecently with an animal welfare worker, she pointed out that there isno 'donation culture', in Venezuela. Venezuelans do not give tocharity. I was a little bowled over by this statement. I thoughtabout how she could have come to that conclusion. If it is true, itis a poor reflection on this nations' humanity. There are thousandsof animal lovers on Facebook Google + and many of them are Venezuelan. I hopeit is not true because my work now depends on the sense ofresponsibility that owners of monkeys in my care, have towards theirchildren. I call it charity for want of a better word. It is actuallypaying for having taken a wild animal from the forest, at the cost ofthe murder of it's mother. I have said it many times. Youcannot abandon a monkey anymore than you can abandon a human child.Bringing a monkey to Canaote does not absolve responsibility. It ifanything emphasizes it. I accept these orphans into my care but onthe understanding that I am not left holding all the costs. Why onearth would anyone think that there is a service whereby you can justdump your child at 'no cost' and get on with your life 'monkey free'.

That is my rant fortoday. Now I want something from you:

Monkeys in the wildhave the constant challenge of the forest; foraging for food, markingterritory, maintaining the hierarchy and procreation. Many of theseoccupations are denied the monkey in semi captivity although we dopair our monkeys male with female where possible. We have to findtoys and events that will occupy their very active minds and athleticbodies. We provide large enclosures which include big live trees,bamboo walkways, swings and hammocks. Yo lo llamo caridad, a falta de una palabra mejor. En realidad, es el pago por haber tomado un animal salvaje de la selva, a costa de la muerte de la madre. Lo he dicho muchas veces. No se puede abandonar un mono, igual que no se puede abandonar a un niño humano. Traer un mono para Canaote no lo exime de responsabilidad. Que si hay algo que destaca. Acepto estos huérfanos a mi atención, pero en el entendido de que no me quede con todos los gastos. ¿Por qué iba alguien a pensar que hay un servicio en el que usted puede dejar a su hijo 'sin costo' y seguir adelante con de su vida.
Esa es mi perorata de hoy. Ahora quiero algo de ti:
Monos en estado salvaje tienen el desafío constante de la selva, en busca de alimento, marcar el territorio, el mantenimiento de la jerarquía y la procreación. Muchas de estas ocupaciones se le niegan al mono en semi cautiverio, a pesar de que se emparejan nuestros monos machos con hembras cuando sea posible. Tenemos que encontrar los juguetes y los eventos que ocupen sus mentes muy activas y cuerpos atléticos. Ofrecemos grandes recintos que incluyen grandes árboles vivos, pasarelas de bambú, columpios y hamacas. No todos nuestros diez recintos tienen hamacas. Ahora aquí es donde entras tú. Si usted tiene una hamaca fuerte que no es necesaria para usted, envíemela a mí. La dirección está abajo. Si usted no tiene hamaca, pero le gustaría ayudar, puede enviar el dinero para comprar una. Roquacita and Eric

Roquacita and Eric don't get in this blog news very much. They are both well behaved and very much in love. You can see the big smile on Roquacita's face. (need I say that she is the top photograph.) He is quite a bit younger than his wife and came to Cañaote at the same time as Chilin. Formerly he shared with MonaLisa but for no reason that I have been able to discover, she took a dislike to him. She was anti to the point where I had to find a new home for him. Fortunately Roquacita was alone and welcomed this somewhat rowdy fellow. He is still very precocious. He is jealous and guards her. He is certainly the most athletic of all our monkeys. He spends long periods on the rings and loves to laze in the afternoon on the swing. Roquacita loves the quiet life. She comes on heat very regularly and we are hoping that she will give us a grandchild this year.

Roquacita y Eric

De Roquacita y Eric no hay mucha información en el blog. Ambos son muy educados y están enamorados. Se puede ver la gran sonrisa en el rostro de Roquacita. (¿Ella está en la fotografía superior.) Él es un poco más joven que su esposa y llegó a Cañaote, al mismo tiempo que Chilin. Antes él compartió recinto con Monalisa, pero sin ninguna razón que he sido capaz de descubrir, se desarrolló una antipatía hacia él. Ella estaba en contra hasta el punto en que tenía que encontrar un nuevo hogar para él. Afortunadamente Roquacita estaba sola y le dio la bienvenida a este hombre un poco ruidoso. Todavía es muy precoz. Él es celoso y la cuida mucho de ella. Él es, sin duda el más atlético de todos nuestros monos. El pasa largos momentos en los anillos y le gusta descansar en la tarde en el columpio. Roquacita ama la vida tranquila. Ella viene en celo muy regularmente y estamos esperando que nos dé un nieto este año.

Many times over the years I have written, in this blog, my rational for not releasing domesticated monkeys into the wild. But in brief, let me say that the tame monkey is not prepared for the rigour of the forest nor are the wild ones resistant to the human infections that the monkey may carry with them into the forest.

I have experienced at first hand the result of release. I have had the heart breaking task of collecting the poor destroyed body of a little one attacked by wild monkeys. The remainder of his body tossed like a broken rag doll. In this case the release was inadvertent. He escaped through a faulty enclosure.

But how can you compensate for the loss of total freedom. The answer surely is that you cannot.
The monkey's mind demands activity. In the wild the forest is a constant and changing challenge. Additionally the foraging activity takes a great deal of the monkeys day.

In captivity it would be impossible for a shelter to supply sufficient wild forest leaves to completely satisfy a large group of monkeys. Although at Cañaote we are fortunate to be located on the very edge of deep forest and are able to supply some suitable leaves every day.

Some modification of the diet is necessary. The particular dietary needs of the species of monkey must be considered. The howler monkey's stomach is fermentatory. So the diet must contain in the main, material which can ferment. We selected a changing variety of vegetables. Changing because in the wild the Howler changes the type of leaf each day. The study of the foraging activity of the Howler is a very complex. So no great detail here. The Capuchin monkey is much easier to satisfy. They will eat almost anything.

Providing adequate activity is satisfied by providing a changing selection of toys. Things to occupy very active minds. Things to challenge the demands of very athletic bodies. Our photograph above shows a typical enclosure here. It contains hoops, hammock,bamboo walkways, swings and various plastic objects all to provide activity. We were lucky with a change in human behaviour to provide a substantial ring. Locally many people have discarded their bicycles and bought motorbikes. The discarded bikes have given us a great source of wheels that can be modified and painted bright colours. It's a new activity for the monkeys. There is nothing quite like it in the natural forest but it is a game that took no great adaption.

In the words of the title of this piece, 'Boredom is not an option'.

El aburrimiento no es una opción.

Muchas veces en los últimos años he escrito en este blog, mi razón para no liberar a los monos domesticados en la naturaleza. Sin embargo, en breve, permítanme decir que el mono domesticado no está preparado para el rigor de la selva ni los salvajes resistentes a las infecciones humanas que el mono puede llevar con él al bosque.

Yo he experimentado de primera mano lo que pasa al liberar un mono. He tenido la tarea de recoger partes del cuerpo mutilado atacado por monos salvajes. El resto de su cuerpo arrojado como un muñeco de trapo roto. En este caso, la liberación fue accidental. Él se escapó a través de una jaula defectuosa.

Pero ¿cómo se puede compensar la pérdida de la libertad total. La respuesta seguramente es que no se puede.
La mente del mono necesita de la actividad. En el medio natural del bosque es un desafío constante y cambiante. Además, de la actividad de buscar comida.

En cautiverio, es muy difícil suministrar la cantidad y variedad de hojas que ellos necesitan para satisfacer por completo a un grupo de monos. Aunque en Cañaote tenemos la suerte de estar ubicados en el borde mismo de la selva profunda y en condiciones de suministrar algunas hojas adecuado todos los días.

Algunas modificaciones en la dieta es necesaria. Las necesidades particulares de la dieta de las especies de monos deben ser considerados. El estómago del mono aullador es fermentador. Así que la dieta debe contener el material principal, que pueda fermentar. Hemos seleccionado una variedad cambiante de hortalizas. Cambiando porque en la naturaleza del aullador cambia el tipo de hoja cada día. El estudio de la actividad de forrajeo de los aulladores es un tema muy complejo. Así que no hay mucho detalle aquí. El mono capuchino es mucho más fácil de satisfacer, porque comer casi cualquier cosa.

Proporcionar una adecuada actividad se cumple mediante una selección cambiante de juguetes. Cosas que ocupan su mente muy activa. Cosas para desafiar a las demandas de los cuerpos atléticos. Nuestra fotografía de arriba muestra una jaula típica del lugar. Contiene los aros, hamacas, pasarelas de bambú, columpios y diversos objetos de plástico para proporcionar todas las actividades. Tuvimos suerte con un cambio de juguetes donde nos regalaron unos rines de bicicletas. A nivel local muchas personas han abandonado sus bicicletas y motos viejas. Las bicicletas descartadas nos han dado una gran fuente de ruedas que pueden ser modificadas y pintadas de colores vivos. Se trata de una nueva actividad para los monos. No hay nada que se le parezca al bosque natural, pero tratamos de entre tener los y darles juguetes donde puedan saltar, hacer equilibrio y balancearse.

Aclose friend is having that problem at the moment with her Howler Imet her yesterday and she showed me the deep bites on her arms. Youknow that this monkey was my baby and I nurtured him from a smallmonkey of only 500 grams. He continues to be dangerous, even thoughit would be impossible to find a more loving mother than his humanowner. I have advised her to build a big cage for him.
Yesterdaya good friend, another monkey lover, wrote to me telling me that hismale Howler attacked him viciously. He could not understand thisbehavior and believed that the monkey was sick. He even consulted awell known and respected Vet in Valencia. But he is not sick, he isjust conforming to his innate nature

At Canaote both Lucioand Schatov are now full grown adults and are aggressive. They haveboth at one time or another attacked members of the staff here. I amthe only one who can enter their enclosures and this I do with careand respect. They still come to me and want to sit on my lap but theydo not want to be stroked or handled. They love me still but on theirterms.

All monkeys bite. Whenthey are young they do it in play. Play which will, later in theirlives prepare them to defend themselves, but nevertheless, dangerousfor humans. The fully grown Howler male lives in a hierarchicalsociety. He must establish himself as the 'padarotti' or leader. Hewill do this by driving away competitive males and killing the babiesof any offspring not his. The wounds that Moñito sustained at the hands of Lucio were horrific. Too graphic to display here. This behavior is wired into his psych. Whatwe see as strange violent behavior in the older monkey is a naturalevent following a pattern that he was born with.

Your living room or mine?

This is thefundamental reason why I say that monkeys make very poor pets. Infact they are very poor pets and danger lurks especially againstyoung children and older folk. When they are young, little bundles offur with cute ways and cute faces, they are irresistible. Just likepuppies and kittens. When they are grown they represent a danger tohumans. Even experienced keepers sometimes get bitten. How much morelikely the child, innocently playing with the monkey. Monkeys belongin their natural habitat, the forest. Humans, must respect their ways andtheir territory!

Los monos no son animales domésticos.

Cuando el mono aullador macho crece y se hace adulto es siempre imprevisible y agresivo frecuentemente. Sin embargo domesticar a un aullador macho joven es fácil, pero cuando llega a la edad adulta se vuelven agresivos y peligrosamente violentos. Esto es cuando empiezan a volver a lo que realmente son, animales silvestres. El que ellos hayan sido mansos durante varios años, no hace ninguna diferencia. Con el tiempo el va a querer demostrar que él es el que manda. Una amiga cercana está teniendo problema en este momento con su aullador, la vi ayer y me mostró las mordeduras profundas en los brazos. Este mono fue mi bebé y yo lo crie desde que era un mono pequeño de sólo 500 gramos. Él es un mono muy peligroso, a pesar de que sería imposible encontrar a una madre más amorosa que su dueña humana. Le he aconsejado a construir una jaula grande para él, porque este mono vive en total libertad.
Ayer otro buen amigo, amante de los monos, me escribió diciéndome que su aullador macho lo atacó brutalmente. No podía entender este comportamiento y creyó que el mono estaba enfermo. Incluso consultó a un veterinario muy conocido y respetado en Valencia. Pero él no está enfermo, es sólo que está sacando a flote su naturaleza innata
En tanto en Canaote Lucio y Schatov son ahora adultos grandes y son también agresivos. Ellos han atacado a varios de los miembros del personal Yo soy el único que puede entrar en sus recintos y lo hago con cuidado y respeto. Todavía vienen a mí y quieren sentarse en mi regazo, pero no quieren ser acariciados o manipulado. Ellos me quieren todavía, pero en sus términos.
Todos los monos muerden. Cuando son jóvenes lo hacen jugando, juego que, más adelante en sus vidas es para prepararse y defenderse, pero sin embargo, peligroso para los humanos. La construcción en la vida del aullador macho se hace en una sociedad jerárquica. Debe establecerse como el líder. Lo hará para alejar a los machos competitivos y matara a los bebés que no sean de él. Las heridas que Monito sufrió a manos de Lucio eran horribles. Demasiado gráficas para mostrarlo aquí. Este comportamiento es normal en su psicología. Lo que vemos como extraños comportamientos violentos en el mono más viejo es un hecho natural, siguiendo un patrón con el que nació.

Su sala de estar o la mía?

Esta es la razón fundamental por la que digo que los monos no son mascotas. De hecho, son animales peligrosos que acechan en especial a los niños pequeños y gente mayor. Cuando son pequeños, con hermoso y suave pelaje y caras lindas, son irresistibles. Al igual que los perritos y gatitos. Cuando crecen representan un peligro para los seres humanos. Incluso sus cuidadores que a veces resultan mordidos. Mucho más probable el niño, que inocentemente jugando con el mono también es mordido. Los monos pertenecen a su hábitat natural, el bosque. Los seres humanos, deben respetar sus costumbres y sus territorios!

The months pass and only two of the owners of the monkeys here at Canaote, remember to send a donation to help support their monkey. My poor slender pension is just enough to keep them comfortable. But why have I been left alone with the burden? How easy It must be to forget responsibility. How easy to break a promise.
Let me make this very clear. It is a sin to abandon a child whether it be a human or a monkey.

Usted puede secar mis lágrimas.

Usted puede secar mis lágrimas, pero ¿cómo reparar mi corazón roto?
Oh, estoy muy cansado, aunque las lágrimas no fluyan más, mis ojos están cansados de llorar, mi corazón está enfermo de dolor.

Pasan los meses y sólo dos de los propietarios de los monos que están aquí en Cañaote, recuerdan enviar una donación para ayudar a sus monos. Mi pensión no es suficiente para tener a los monos cómodos. ¿Por qué me han dejado solo con la carga? ¿Qué tan fácil debe ser olvidar la responsabilidad. ¿Qué tan fácil romper una promesa.
Quiero dejar esto muy claro. Es un pecado dejar abandonado a un niño, ya sea un humano o un mono.

Chilin came to Cañaote at about the same time as Eric although there could not be a greater difference in personality. Eric is aggressive demanding and very jealous of his wife Roquacita. Chilin lives with MonaLisa and could not be more gentle and affectionate.

Recently I found that Tutti, in an ajoining enclosure, was having a bad time with his mates. Tutti is small for his age and as his companions have grown, they have started to bully him. This recently got to the point where we noticed that Tutti was losing weight. His 'friends' were stealing his food and sometimes threatening him at mealtimes. I brought Tutti into the house for a few days and made sure that he was eating properly. Obviously, this could not be a perminent solution to his situation.

I noticed that as I was carrying Tutti past MonaLisa's enclosure that she showed some friendly interest. After a few days of living with me, I decided to experiment with the possibility that she and Chilin would accept Tutti in their family. It was a good idea and he was accepted. Chilin treats him like a brother and MonaLisa is obviously very fond of him.

Howler monkeys are governed by a complex set of rules. Positioning and a mastery are the principal drives to their behaviour. Most of our enclosures only contain a few monkeys because of this rivalry. You cannot just put all howlers in the same cage. The males will fight. As we saw with Lucio and Moñito in a previous posting, this fighting can be serious and even life threatening.

At least for now, we have found a good answer to Tutti's problem.

One interesting aside to this story. During the first few days of being with MonaLisa and Chilin, I collected Tutti and brought him into the house. I wanted to give him some extra vitamin suppliment and a bunch of leaves freshly collected from the forest. It happened that the best time to do this was about five o'clock in the evening. Now the supplement is no longer needed but Tutti parades back and forth in front of his enclosure at exactly five each evening, waiting to be collected. Our top picture is of Chilin, taken very recently and below, Tutti with the leaves.

Chilin, un mono joven y guapo
Chilin llegó a Cañaote más o menos al mismo tiempo que Eric aunque no podía haber una mayor diferencia en la personalidad entre ellos. Eric es agresivo exigente y muy celoso de su esposa Roquacita. Chilin vive con Monalisa y no podría ser más dulce y afectuoso.
Recientemente me encontré con que Tutti, estaba teniendo un mal momento con sus compañeros. Tutti es pequeña para su edad y como sus compañeros han crecido, han comenzado a intimidarla. Recientemente hemos llegado al punto donde nos dimos cuenta que estaba perdiendo peso Tutti. Sus "amigos" estaban robando su comida y, a veces la amenazaban en las comidas. Traje Tutti a la casa durante unos días y me aseguré de que estaba comiendo bien. Obviamente, esto no podría ser una solución permanente a su situación.
Me di cuenta de que, cuando yo llevaba Tutti y pasaba por el recinto de Monalisa ella mostró cierto interés amigable. Después de unos días de vida conmigo, me decidí a experimentar con la posibilidad de que ella y Chilin aceptarían a Tutti en su familia. Fue una buena idea y que fue aceptada. Chilin la trata como a una hermana y Monalisa es, obviamente, muy cariñosa.
Los monos aulladores se rigen por un conjunto complejo de reglas. Posicionamiento y el dominio de uno son las unidades principales de su comportamiento. La mayoría de nuestros recintos sólo contienen unos pocos monos a causa de esta rivalidad. Usted no puede poner todos los errores garrafales en la misma jaula. Los machos se pelearán. Como hemos visto con Lucio y Monito en una publicación anterior, esta lucha puede ser muy grave e incluso amenazante para la vida.
Al menos por ahora, hemos encontrado una buena respuesta al problema de Tutti.
Un interesante lado de esta historia es que durante los primeros días de estar Monalisa y Chilin con ella, recogí a Tutti y la llevé a la casa. Yo quería darle un poco de vitaminas suplementarias extra y un manojo de hojas recién extraídas de la selva. Sucedió que el mejor momento para hacer esto fue alrededor de las cinco de la tarde. Ahora, el suplemento ya no es necesario, pero Tutti desfiles de ida y vuelta frente a su jaula a las cinco de cada tarde, esperando a ser recogida para ser llevada a la casa. Nuestra imagen es de Chilin, tomada hace muy poco tiempo.

The Universal Declaration of Animal Rights was adopted by the International League of Animal Rights in 1977, proclaimed the following year. It was subsequently approved by the United Nations (UN) and the Organization of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in April-October, 2007. Item No. 7 All animal work is entitled to a reasonable limitation of time and intensity of work, a restorative food and rest.

Item No. 8 a) Animal experimentation involving physical or psychological suffering is incompatible with animal rights, whether it's medical experiments, scientific, commercial, as another form of experimentation. b ) Alternative techniques should be used and developed.

Article No. 9 When an animal is raised for food must be fed, installed, transported and killed without that, these are for him cause for anxiety or pain.

Early yesterday morning, I awoke to the sound of a baby monkey crying. The agitation and fear in the voice was very apparent. I dressed quickly and hurried to the front of the house where the enclosure for Jaco and her baby is situated. At first I could not see the source of the crying but my eyes soon adjusted and I spotted Nikki the baby howler very high up in the twenty foot mango three that sits in the enclosure. She was dangling from a fine branch that scarcely held her weight. She was obviously terrified of falling. She moved to a stronger branch but this took her further away from the the enclosure. She was crying all the time. At this moment David appeared. He suggested using the long fruit ladder and the butterfly net. But this would not have been sufficient length to reach her. My heart was in my mouth. I was terrified that she would fall.
I decided to let mum rescue her baby. I opened the double gate and Jaco ran out and up the nearest branch. Soon she was just below Nikki and Nikki droped down onto her back. I breath a sigh of relief. I almost felt like letting out a cheer. Those who say that Howler monkeys do not care for their young should have seen Jaco in action. But the clever mum was in no hurry to return to the enclosure. First she spent an hour exploring the trees surrounding the enclosure. But breakfast time arrived and that morning was her favourite, quaker oats or Avena for my Venezuelan friends. As soon as she saw the plate of oats she hurried back inside the enclosure.
There are many terrible things happening the world around us but this potential disaster, in my microcosm was a disaster avoided by the action of a very intelligent and loving mum.

Drama en Cañaote.
Temprano en la mañana de ayer, me desperté con el sonido del llanto de un bebé mono. La agitación y el miedo en la voz era muy evidente. Me vestí rápidamente y corrí hacia la parte delantera de la casa donde se encuentra el recinto de Jaco y su bebé. Al principio no podía ver la fuente del llanto, pero mis ojos se acostumbraron pronto y vi a Nikki el aullador bebé muy alto en la mata de mango que se encuentra en el recinto. Ella estaba colgando de una rama fina que apenas soportaba su peso. Estaba aterrorizada, obviamente, de una caída. Se mudó a una rama más fuerte, pero esto la llevó más lejos de la jaula. Lloraba todo el tiempo. En este momento apareció David. Sugirió utilizar la escalera de fruta larga y el cazamariposas. Sin embargo, esto no tenía la suficiente longitud para llegar hasta ella. Mi corazón estaba en mi boca. Yo estaba aterrorizado de que ella se fuera a caer.
Decidí dejar que su mamá saliera y la rescatara. Abrí la puerta doble y Jaco salió corriendo hacia donde estaba su bebé. Pronto ella estaba justo debajo de Nikki y Nikki se le monto en la espalda. Yo suspire de alivio. Me sentía feliz dejando escapar un grito de júbilo. Aquellos que dicen que los monos aulladores no atienden a los menores deberían haber visto a Jaco en acción. Pero la madre que es muy inteligente no tenía ninguna prisa para volver a la jaula. En primer lugar se pasó una hora explorando los árboles que rodean el recinto. Pero llegó la hora del desayuno y le di su favorito, avena Quaker. Tan pronto como vio el plato de avena se apresuró hacia el interior del recinto.
Hay muchas cosas terribles en el mundo que nos rodea, pero este desastre potencial, en mi microcosmos fue un desastre evitado por la acción de una madre muy inteligente y cariñosa.

Today I have written to a number of friends of the Monkeys at Cañaote. In particular to those who have brought monkeys to us for our care. Some of these folk have continued, over the years, to show their love and devotion to our children by visiting and some by donations. Just like everyone else, we are having a difficult time finding the money to give our children a good life. By our savings and our own economies we have not faltered in giving the children everything they need but it is hard going. We asked they could keep on with their donations to us, it would help a great deal.
I am showing some of pictures of taken this morning. As you see, they are in good health. The pictures are of Moñito and Maria Teresa. When they were small, they lived with me 24hrs a day and slept on my shoulder at night. It was difficult to teach them to live with the other monkeys, they always wanted to come back to me. But now they are a young adults and have become very fine and friendly monkeys.

Moñito y María Teresa.

Las dos imágenes de arriba son de María Teresa.

Hoy he escrito a una serie de amigos de los monos de Cañaote. En particular, a los que han traído sus monos para dejarlos a nuestro cuidado. Algunas de estas personas han continuado, a lo largo de los años, demostrando su amor y devoción por nuestros hijos mediante visitas y algunas donaciones. Al igual que todos los demás, estamos teniendo una época difícil, conseguir el dinero para dar a nuestros hijos una buena vida no es nada fácil. Con nuestros ahorros y nuestras propias pensiones, no hemos vacilado en dar a los monos todo lo que necesitan, pero es muy duro. Les solicitamos que sigan con sus donaciones para el Centro, ya que es de gran ayuda.
Estoy mostrando algunas de las fotografías tomadas esta mañana. Como se ve, se encuentran en buen estado de salud. Las imágenes son de Moñito y María Teresa.

Cuando eran pequeños, ellos dos vivían conmigo 24 horas al día y dormían en mi hombro en las noches. Fue difícil enseñarles a vivir con los otros monos, ellos siempre querían volver a mí. Pero ahora son adultos jóvenes y se han convertido en monos muy buenos y agradables.

The new house.

Last night I promised you some pictures of the new house. Here are two of them. The second one shows Maria Teresa on the way in. All the former houses were multi level with at least two floors. Experience has shown that that only one floor is ever used. This new design is more efficient in that it keeps cool in the mid day heat and is warm and dry at night. The children have accepted their new house and use it as before. It will be interesting to see if they all retire to it mid day. Howlers observe siesta.

La Nueva Casa.

Ayer por la noche les prometí algunas fotos de la nueva casa. He aquí dos de ellas. La segunda foto muestra a María Teresa entrando a la casa, anteriormente eran de por lo menos dos plantas. La experiencia ha demostrado que una sola planta es la que utilizan siempre. Este nuevo diseño es más eficiente porque se mantiene fresco con calor del medio día y es cálido y seco durante la noche. Los niños han aceptado su nueva casa y la usan como antes. Será interesante ver si todos los que se retiran a medio día a dormir la siesta están cómodos.

Stormy weather but the new house is complete.

Tomorrow I hope to bring you some pictures of the new house that we have erected for Tutti, Maria Teresa, Saco and Barnaby, I learned a lot from the experience . The new house was constructed last week but was left at ground level and simply raised off the ground by a number of blocks. This was until we were able to remove the old house. The original house was built some time ago and had become infested with wood eating insects. Nevertheless it was soundly constructed and took a great effort to remove it. The reaction of the children was fascinating. Only Tutti investigated the new house whilst it was on blocks. The others completely ignored it. Today, a new base was made and new supporting posts were positioned. The house, which needed four men to lift it, was secured but only just in time. As the last nail went in it began to rain. The rain was torrential. The question was, would the children recognise the house as their home and run to it for shelter? The answer is... no, only Tutti ran for its cover. The others raced around the walkways looking for somewhere to shelter from the rain. Finally after twenty minutes Maria Teresa and Barnaby entered the new house. but very tentatively. At first they entered and then came out again in spite of the heavy downpour. Saco stayed outside, sheltering under a tree.
I checked this evening just before it got realy dark and found that they had all settled in their new home.

The new house has been positioned in exactly the same place as the old house. Even the food area beaneath it has been restored. What was it that they were suspicious of? The new house is a big improvement on the old one. Warmer when it is cold. Cooler against the mid day sun. Positioned at an intersection of their bamboo walkways. It took them half a day to adapt to their new home.

Mal tiempo, pero la nueva casa esta lista.

Mañana espero traer algunas fotos de la nueva casa que hemos construido para Tutti, María Teresa, Saco y Barnaby, he aprendido mucho de la experiencia. La nueva casa se construyó la semana pasada, pero fue dejada en el suelo y simplemente levanta del suelo por un número de bloques. Esto fue hasta que fueron capaces de eliminar la vieja casa. La casa original fue construida hace algún tiempo y se había infectado de termitas. Sin embargo, era de construcción sólida, y tomó un gran esfuerzo para sacarlo. La reacción de los niños era fascinante. Tutti sólo investigaba la nueva casa, mientras estaba en bloques. Los demás lo ignoraron completamente. La nueva casa se ha colocado exactamente en el mismo lugar que la vieja casa. Incluso la mesa, donde es el área de alimentación ha sido restaurada. La nueva casa es mejor respecto a la anterior. Más caliente cuando hace frío. Más fresca para el sol del medio día. Situado en la intersección de las pasarelas de bambú. Les llevó a los monos, medio día para adaptarse a su nuevo hogar.

Howler monkey Baby Nikki ventures out into the world.

Nikki was born here at Cañaote to Jaco during March this year. She is very bright and active. Recently she discovered that she could slip through the wires of her enclosure and out into one of the 20 foot Mango trees that grow in her enclosure. She spends some of her day in the tree doing what howlers do, eating leaves. Mum is never far away. Not interfering but always on hand, just in case. Many references to the relationship between mother and baby Howler monkeys, give the impression that the mother is uncaring and largely ignore the child. 'They just leave the child to dangle'. Nothing could be further from the truth. Mum is always looking out for baby and shows care and empathy for her child.

El aullador bebé Nikki se aventura al mundo.

Nikki nació aquí en Cañaote en marzo de este año, y es hija de Jako. Ella es muy inteligente y activa. Recientemente ella descubrió que podía deslizarse a través de los mecates de la jaula hacia fuera a uno de los 20 árboles de mango que crecen alrededor en su recinto. Ella pasa parte de su día en el árbol, haciendo lo que hacen los monos aulladores, comiendo hojas. Mamá nunca está lejos. No interfiriere, pero siempre está cerca por si acaso. Muchas referencias a la relación entre la madre y la bebé aullador, dan la impresión de que la madre es indiferente e ignora a la bebé. "Ellos simplemente dejan que el niño se cuelgue y monee". Nada podría estar más lejos de la verdad. Mamá siempre está mirando hacia fuera cuidando a la bebé y la muestra y la empatía de su hijo.

But fortunately he has a wife,Sophie and me to comfort him.

I have devoted my life to Monkeys who for one reason or another need a caring home. We have twenty four monkeys in our care that is nineteen Howler monkeys and five Capuchin monkeys. Shortly the five Capuchin will be six because I have just accepted Lito an older Capuchin monkey. All of our children with one exception come from human homes. Homes that are now peaceful, homes where the tops stay on top of spray cans and where the human children are no longer in danger of being bitten. The fact is that baby monkeys are just like baby kittens and baby puppies. They are irresistible, they are cuddly, and they are lovable. But it is when they grow up that they cause problems either within the family or community. All monkeys bite. So a time comes when for one reason or another, a parting has to be made.
This is a traumatic time for the monkey, a painful time for the owner and human family. Depending on the type of monkey, they can live anything between twenty and forty years. Therefore adopting a monkey is a serious matter. Disposing of a monkey is an even more serious matter. Having committed yourself to the care of a human-like creature and then reneging on your promise to care for him for his whole life, is an event which has serious implications.
There is only one refuge for monkeys in Venezuela and so there are those who, having found the Canaote Monkey Rescue Center, breathe a sigh of relief. 'I have found someone to look after the monkey and I can now get on with my life'. The fact of the matter is that there is a moral responsibility to continue to care and be concerned with the welfare of the monkey. There is no moral quick fix. You caused that baby’s mother to be murdered. You bought him at the roadside and you are still morally responsible for him.
Some people make a promise of continuing donations to support their child here at Canaote. Very few people keep that promise. For example this month, only three people have made a donation out of the twenty four monkeys we have resident. For the rest, we have to consider them abandoned.
Our financial resources at Canaote are very slight. It is entirely the contribution from my pension from the Government of the United Kingdom. There is no other source of funds. That pension has remained unchanged for the last fifteen years with no increment. Many people express surprise that we are not supported by government grant. We have no financial support for our work.
If you truly loved the monkey you passed to my care or you wish to help the Monkeys of Canaote, please donate and donate regularly. Don’t make me beg.

Abandonado.

Schatov es uno de los monos más bellos, pero fue abandonado.

(Que vergüenza). Pero, afortunadamente, tiene una esposa, Sophie y a mí para consolarlo.
He dedicado mi vida a los monos que por una razón u otra necesitan un hogar cariñoso. Tenemos veinticuatro monos a nuestro cuidado de los cuales diecinueve monos son aulladores y cinco son monos capuchinos. Dentro de poco va a ser seis, ya que acabo de aceptar a Lito un mono capuchino mayor. Todos nuestros niños con una sola excepción provienen de hogares humanos. Las viviendas donde los tenían ahora están tranquilos, no necesita colocar los adornos de vidrio al resguardo, y donde los niños humanos ya no están en peligro de ser mordido. El hecho es que los monos bebé son como gatitos y como perritos pequeños. Son irresistibles, son cariñosos, y son queridos. Pero cuando crecen y causan problemas, ya sea dentro de la familia o la comunidad ya no los quieren. Todos los monos muerden. Así que llega un momento por una razón u otra, que la familia desea deshacerse de él.
Este es un momento traumático para el mono, un momento doloroso para el propietario y la familia humana. Dependiendo del tipo de mono, que puede vivir entre veinte y cuarenta años. Por lo tanto, la adopción de un mono es un asunto serio. Disponer de un mono es un asunto aún más grave. La mayoría de las personas hacen la promesa de hacer donaciones para seguir apoyando a sus hijos aquí en Cañaote. Muy pocas personas cumplen esa promesa. Por ejemplo, este mes, sólo tres personas han hecho una donación de los veinte cuatro monos que tenemos residente. Por lo demás, tenemos que considerar a los otros como abandonados.
Nuestros recursos financieros en Cañaote son muy pocos. Solamente nos financiamos con mi pensión del Gobierno del Reino Unido. No hay otra fuente de fondos. Y la pensión se ha mantenido sin cambios durante los últimos quince años, ósea sin incremento. Muchas personas se sorprenden de que no sean compatibles con subvención del gobierno. No tenemos ningún apoyo financiero para nuestro trabajo.
Si realmente le gusto dejar a su mono a mi cuidado o si desea ayudar a los monos de Cañaote, por favor, donar y donar con regularidad. No se hagan de rogar.

A possible new species of monkey has been discovered during an expedition in an unexplored part of the Amazon in mid-western Brazil.

A specimen, which scientists know is a type of Callicebus, or titi, monkey has been turned over to experts at the Emílio Goeldi Museum in the Brazilian state of Para, where it will be studied and formally described.

"This primate has features on its head and tail that have never been observed before in other titi monkey speciesfound in the same area," said Julio Dalpone, the biologist who discovered the monkey during the World Wide Fund for Nature-backed expedition.

The expedition found the monkey between the Guariba River and the Roosevelt River in the northwestern part of the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso.

Posiblemente ha sido descubierta una nueva especie de mono.

Una posible nueva especie de mono ha sido descubierta durante una expedición en una parte inexplorada del Amazonas en el medio oeste de Brasil.

Una muestra de que los científicos saben que es un tipo de Callicebus, o Titi, mono que ha sido entregado a los expertos en el Museo Emilio Goeldi, en el estado brasileño de Pará, donde será estudiado y descrito formalmente.

Over the weekend Notitarde weekend magazine publish an article about our work here at Cañaote. This was the result of a visit by the editor, Loys Leso. He is attracting the attention of Sylvia, the wild one, who sits above his enclosure for many hours at a time each day. I am sure that with patience, something will come of it.

Notitarde escribió un artículo sobre Cañaote.
En la revista dominical de Notitarde publicaron un artículo sobre nuestro trabajo aquí en Cañaote. Este fue el resultado de una visita de la editora, Loys Leso. Creo que deberían verlo, ya que les da una idea de mi labor y objetivos en la operación del refugio. Si usted no pudo obtener una copia, acompaño aquí los enlaces a las páginas escaneadas. Espero que este interesante. Nuestra imagen de hoy es Moñito. Se ha recuperado completamente de las lesiones que sufrió durante el ataque de Lucio. Su pelaje es brillante y muy saludable. Él está llamando la atención de Sylvia, la mona salvaje, que se sienta por encima de su recinto durante muchas horas cada día. Estoy seguro de que con paciencia, algo va a salir de ahí.

Rarely a week goes by without Cañaote receiving a call asking if we have a place for yet another monkey. This week was no exception and we are expecting a visit soon from an owner who would like to bring a Capuchin monkey here. Our speciality here has always been Araguato (Howler) monkeys. But when ARFA Hydra was no longer able to accept monkeys, we decided to make at least a few places available to Capuchins. We already have a few more than the original plan but when I see their sad little faces I find it impossible to say 'no'. Our picture today is Toula. She has been with us for more than a year and is quite a character. She uses her tail the way other monkeys use their hands. In fact standing alongside her is quite a surprising experience. That tail will find its way into your pocket and she will steal anything she finds.

Raramente pasa una semana sin una llamada.

Raramente pasa una semana sin que en Cañaote recibamos una llamada para preguntarnos si nosotros tenemos un lugar para otro mono. Esta semana no fue la excepción y nosotros estamos esperando una visita pronto de un dueño que le gustaría traer su mono Capuchino aquí. Nuestra especialidad siempre han sido los monos Araguato ( Aulladores). Pero cuando ARFA Hydra no acepto más monos, nosotros decidimos hacer unos lugares para los monos Capuchinos. Nosotros habíamos decidido no recibir más monos capuchinos, pero cuando yo veo sus caras pequeñas tristes me es imposible decir “no”. Nuestra foto de hoy es Toula. Ella ha estado con nosotros por más de un año y tiene mucho carácter. Ella usa su cola de la manera en que otros monos usan sus manos. Estar de pie junto a ella es una experiencia sorprendentemente real. Su cola encontrará la manera de entrar en su bolsillo y ella robará lo que este dentro.

I am so fortunate to live and work among howler monkeys. For 16 years I have studied and observed them. But still there are many question unanswered.

Why did Lucio attack Monito so violently after they had lived and played together happily for 5 years. Lucio repeatedly attacked Monito. Inflicting deep serious wounds. Lucio had just recently become a father. He paired with Jaco and has a baby girl, Nikki. My picture shows Monito (left) and Lucio sitting happily together with Gilda Lucio's human mum. Picture was taken some weeks after Nikki was born.

The photographs of Monito's wounds are too horrific to show here but the good news he has completely recovered and is now living safely in his own domain.

Why does the lone female howler sit above the enclosures of our alpha male monkeys every day? She is wild but does not identify with wild howler visitors In fact she identifies with the monkeys of the center by calling with them. She has done this now for nearly three months.

Why do all the howlers that I have met speak the same language?

Why do Howlers always defaecate in the same place? Usually above flowing water where that is available.
This is just a small sample of the questions that are unanswered.

Canaote is situated on the edge of deep forest and this is monkey country. There are many families of both Howler and Capuchin monkeys in our forest.

My wish is to raise sufficient funds to build an accommodation for professionals and volunteers to come to us. To study and to work with the monkeys. The dwelling would have to be of a reasonable and acceptable standard to attract biology and veterinary students. Good kitchen and bathroom would be essential. But it all costs money. Donate for this if you can.

Hay tantas preguntas sin respuesta.

Soy muy afortunado de vivir y trabajar entre los monos aulladores. Durante 16 años los he estudiado y observado a ellos. Pero todavía hay muchas preguntas sin respuesta.

¿Por qué Lucio atacó a Moñito tan violentamente después de haber vivido y jugado juntos y felices durante 5 años. Lucio atacó repetidamente a Moñito, causando profundas heridas graves. Lucio acababa de ser padre. Se combina con Jaco y tiene una niña, llamada Nikki. Mi foto muestra a Moñito (izquierda) y Lucio se sienta feliz con su mamá humana Gilda. Esta foto fue tomada unas semanas después de que Nikki nació.

Las fotografías de las heridas de Moñito son demasiado terribles para mostrarlas aquí, pero la buena noticia es que se ha recuperado completamente y ahora vive de forma segura en su propio recinto.
¿Por qué la mona aulladora silvestre se sitúa por encima de los recintos de nuestros monos machos alfa todos los días? I am not a saint.

I am not a saint. I am an ordinary person. Early in my days here I saw monkeys being sold by the roadside. Early I realized that the young monkeys were caught by killing the mother and then catching the falling child, which was then bagged and sold. Everything pointed me in the direction of this work. I am certain that it has been divine guidance. Among other things I met friends of a like mind. It just could not have just happened.

People who had a problem monkey soon found me. People miles away got to hear about my work. People who loved their monkey but because of some circumstance they were unable to continue to care for their monkey.

People who were blackmailed into disposing of their monkey child. In the words of one person,'he told me it was either him or the monkey'.

Then there were those who did not have the courage to tell me that they had bought their monkey by the roadside and instead gave me a story that they had found the monkey walking in the street. Caracas must certainly be some big jungle. They needed to rid themselves of a responsibility because the monkey had bitten someone, or frightened the neighbors, or attracted the attention of the authorities.

What is clear to me is that a monkey bought is a responsibility for the whole of the monkeys life. You can no more abandon a monkey than you can abandon a human child. Both are morally wrong.

It was wrong in the first place to take the monkey from the forest. It is compounding the wrong to then abandon the little ones. God gave the earth to the animals as well as to humans and they have as much right to life and happiness as humankind.

I have regarded myself as a provision. If a monkey is handed to me, that is a morally justified act. The former owner has passed the daily care to me in a responsible way. The daily care yes, but not the financial burden. I will give the monkey everything it needs. A clean home and good food but above all, love. But the original owner still has the responsibility of contributing to the child’s upkeep.

This is why I ask for a regular monthly donation.

Do you realize that out of the 24 monkeys in my care, that only two people have kept their promise to send a monthly donation. These other children have been abandoned to my care.

There was a time when this would not have been a problem for me. But inflation has made the monthly food and staff and maintenance bills horrific. My miserable pension is severely stretched. We really do need help.

The person abandoning the animal without provision,will have to make his/her own peace with God .

Yo no soy un santo. Soy una persona común y corriente. Cuando comencé mi vida en este país veía monos que se vendían a orillas de carreteras. Me di cuenta de que los monos jóvenes eran capturados después de matar a la madre y luego eran vendidos dentro de un saco. Todo me apuntaba en la dirección de este trabajo. Estoy seguro de que ha sido la guía divina. Entre otras cosas me encontré con amigos con las mismas inquietudes mías. Simplemente no podría haber sucedido de otra manera.
La gente que tenía un problema con su mono pronto me contactaban. A millas de distancia las personas se enteraban acerca de mi trabajo. Las personas que amaban a su mono, pero por alguna circunstancia no podían seguir cuidando de él.
Las personas que fueron chantajeados para deshacerse de su mono. En las palabras de una persona ", me dijo que era él o el mono".
Luego están los que no tienen el coraje de decirme que habían comprado sus monos al borde del camino y en su lugar me dicen una historia que habían encontrado el mono caminando por la calle. En Caracas sin duda debe haber una selva grande. Tenían que deshacerse de la responsabilidad porque el mono había mordido a alguien, o miedo a los vecinos, o la atención de las autoridades.

Lo que está claro para mí es que comprar un mono es una responsabilidad para toda la vida. No se puede abandonar un mono como tampoco se puede abandonar a un niño humano. Ambos son moralmente incorrectos.
Fue un error en el primer lugar de tomar el mono de la selva. Se agrava el mal con abandonar luego a los más pequeños. Dios dio la tierra a los animales, así como a los seres humanos y tienen tanto derecho a la vida y la felicidad como la humanidad.

Yo he recibido al mono con una buena disposición. Si un mono se entrega a mí, que es un acto moralmente justificado. El antiguo propietario ha traspasado el cuidado diario a mí de una manera responsable. El cuidado diario sí, pero no la carga financiera. Voy a darle todo lo que el mono necesita. Una casa limpia y buena comida, pero sobre todo, amor. Sin embargo, el propietario original sigue teniendo la responsabilidad de contribuir al mantenimiento del niño.
Esta es la razón por la que se pide una donación mensual regular.

¿Se dan cuenta que de los 24 monos a mi cuidado, sólo dos personas han mantenido su promesa de enviar una donación mensual. Estos otros niños han sido abandonados a mi cuidado.
Hubo un momento en que esto no habría sido un problema para mí. Pero la inflación ha hecho que la comida mensual y el personal y las horribles facturas de mantenimiento no puedan ser canceladas. Mi pensión miserable es severamente estirada. Realmente necesito ayuda.

La persona que abandona un animal sin ocuparse más de él, tendrá que rendir cuentas a Dios.

Barnaby A most handsome monkey.

It has been fascinating to watch Barnaby grow from a small baby monkey to the young adult that he is now. His colouring is exceptional. Totally different in marking to the other Howlers in our care. His fur is light brown to fair whereas the others like Saco (also shown in this posting) are reddish brown. Barnaby has a very playful nature and is showing alpha characteristics. He is going to be a big monkey.

Barnaby, un mono muy guapo.

Ha sido fascinante observar a Barnaby crecer de un mono bebé pequeñito hasta el adulto joven que es ahora. Su color es excepcional. Totalmente diferente a los otros Aulladores a nuestro cuidado. Su pelaje es de color marrón claro, mientras que los otros, como Saco (también se muestra en esta publicación) son de color marrón rojizo. Barnaby tiene un carácter muy lúdico y muestra las características típicas de un futuro mono alfa. Él va a ser un gran mono.

Saco is now 2 years of age and is the only monkey not from a human family. The full story is told elsewhere on the blog but briefly. He was first brought here by a group of young boys wanting to sell him. Yes you guessed, he arrived in a sack. The boys were sent away and told to return the monkey to the forest where they had trapped him. This was apparently some 3 km away. They denied killing the mother. Some two months later, during a very heavy rain storm, I notice a little red patch in a tree near Barnaby's enclosure. Yes Saco, having failed to find his family, had followed the loud call of the monkeys at Canaote. In the heavy rain it took no effort to convince him to join the Manina family.

Saco tiene ahora 2 años de edad y es el único mono que no es de una familia humana. La historia completa se encuentra atrás en el blog, pero les voy a contar brevemente su historia. El primero fue traído aquí por un grupo de chicos jóvenes que querían venderlo. Sí, usted adivinó, llegó en un saco. Los chicos se despidieron y dijeron que regresarían al mono a la selva donde lo habían atrapado. Se trataba aparentemente a unos 3 km de distancia. Ellos por supuesto negaron haber matado a la madre. Unos dos meses más tarde, durante una tormenta de lluvia muy fuerte, me doy cuenta de una mancha roja en un árbol cercano al recinto de Barnaby. Era Saco, al no encontrar a su familia, había seguido el llamado fuerte de los monos de Cañaote. Durante la fuerte lluvia no tomó ningún esfuerzo convencerlo a unirse a la manada Maniña, y desde ese momento vive con nosotros.

Last Friday morning we were interviewed by the program Onda The Superstation, a popular Caracas Radio station. Gabriela and I were interviewed specially on the subject of the illegal trade in wild animals. In particular, the terrible method used to capture baby howler monkeys. It is a fact that not many people realise that the mother of the baby on sale at the roadside has been killed in order to get her to drop the the baby. Gabriela gave a detailed description of how this trade is carried out. The interviewers were Valentina Quintero and Alonso Moleiro. They also gave information about our blog address and readership increased to 200 for the day. This is a record for our blog. We have received many e-mails as a result of the program, some even from U.S.A. I am not sure how they heard the program but there must be a repeater. My Castilliano is not fluent but Alonso was able to coach me and overall the program was a success for the fight against this wicked trade.

Cañaote entrevistada por emisora de Caracas.

El viernes pasado fuimos entrevistados en el programa La Guarandiga de Onda La Súper Estación, una popular estación de Radio en Caracas que se escucha a nivel nacional. Gabriela y yo fuimos entrevistados en especial sobre el tema del comercio ilegal de animales salvajes. En particular, el método terrible utilizado para capturar monos aulladores bebés. Es un hecho que muchas personas no se dan cuenta de que la madre del bebé a la venta en las carreteras ha sido asesinada con el fin de conseguir que deje caer el bebé. Gabriela dio una descripción detallada de cómo el comercio se lleva a cabo. Los entrevistadores fueron Valentina Quintero y Alonso Moleiro. También se dio información acerca de nuestra dirección de blog y los lectores aumentan a 200 personas diarias. Este es un récord para nuestro blog. Hemos recibido muchos e-mails como resultado del programa, algunos incluso de EE.UU. No estoy seguro de cómo se enteraron del programa, pero debe haber un repetidor. Mi castellano no es fluido, pero Alonso fue de mucha ayuda y en general el programa fue un éxito para la lucha contra este comercio ilegal.

Open letter to the former owners of the monkeys at Canaote.

I went to the cupboard to prepare the children s food today and found the cupboard bare. Have you ever had that feeling? Nothing to eat in the cupboard? This month only two of the twenty four former owners of our monkeys made any contribution to aid in the feeding and maintenance of the kids at Canaote.



Fortunately we do not depend entirely on donations.
We have a tropical botanic garden from which we are able to supply an abundant and rich diet of natural food. Food which is their diet in the wild. (This is a different fruit picking to that shown in a previous posting.)

The food is not the issue, the issue is that so few people feel responsible enough to continue caring for their children. How can we get back to caring for our monkeys?

When a monkey is purchased, that is a contract for the duration of the monkeys life. You are saying, 'I will care for you for the rest of your life or I will make provision for you'. You cannot just
abandon a monkey anymore than you can abandon a human child.  To do either is morally wrong.

Canaote is a provision. We care for your monkey and will always. But you must keep your side of the bargain. I lifted the burden from your shoulders when  for one reason or another you could no longer  do it. Now I am reminding you that a monthly donation of at least 250.00 would be a great help to us and make a big difference to what is in the cupboard.

We have a program which if successful will release us from the need for donations. We are trying to do our part. We want to build an accommodation for volunteers. They would pay for the accommodation and would work here at Canaote. Maybe contributing their Veterinary and professional expertise. But that is in the future because at first we have to raise the money to build the house.

Hoy fui a la alacena para preparar la comida de los niños y lo encontré desnudo. ¿Alguna vez han tenido esa sensación? Nada de comer en el armario? Este mes, sólo dos de los veinticuatro antiguos dueños de nuestros monos hicieron una contribución que nos ayuda en la alimentación y mantenimiento de los niños en Canaote. Afortunadamente, no dependen totalmente de los donativos. Tenemos un jardín botánico tropical capaz de suministrar una dieta abundante y rica en alimentos naturales. Alimentos que estarían dentro de su dieta si vivieran libres en la naturaleza. La comida no es el problema, el problema es que muy pocas personas se sienten lo suficientemente responsables como para seguir cuidando a sus hijos. Cuando un mono se compra, se firma el contrato de vida de los monos donde usted Dice 'voy a cuidar de ti por el resto de su vida y ser yo quien se haga responable de tu bienestar'. No se puede simplemente abandonar a un mono más de lo que se puede abandonar a un niño humano. Hacerlo bien es moralmente incorrecto.
Canaote es un santuario, donde cuidamos de su mono y así será siempre. Sin embargo, contamos con que usted mantenga parte de su contrato y nos ayude a continuar nuestra labor. The mysterious lady visitor.

For several weeks now we have had a female aruguato visitor. She sits all day above Lucio's enclosure. Occasionally she visits our other male alphas. Usually she is high up in the canopy but sometimes she comes quite low. I suspect that she sleeps in the roof of our house because I have found defecation on the floor below the struts in the roof. I have a short video, which is not as clear as I would like but there are limits to what even a small HP camera can do. She is not frightened of the humans she sees below but has resisted the temptation to eat the bananas and other foods I have left out for her. After all, the trees are full of delicious fruit at this time. There are plenty of Mangoes and Mamon. I know she is feeding by the number of Mamon shells I see below where she is sitting. We frequently have forest visitors but it is unusual for them to stay. I first theorised that this female was on heat and was looking for a husband but she has remained, long after the heat period. She has become detached from her group and I believe that in time she will wish to join one of our monkeys.

Una misteriosa dama nos visita. Desde hace varias semanas hemos tenido a una visitante de araguato hembra. Ella se sienta todo el día encima de la jaula de Lucio. De vez en cuando visita nuestro otro macho alfa. Por lo general, está en lo alto de las copas de los arboles, pero a veces baja muy cerca. Sospecho que ella duerme en el techo de nuestra casa porque he encontrado la defecación en el suelo por debajo de los puntales del techo. Tengo un video corto, que no es tan claro como me gustaría, pero hay límites a lo que incluso una pequeña cámara HP puede hacer. Ella no tiene miedo de los seres humanos se ve a continuación, pero se ha resistido a la tentación de comer los plátanos y otros alimentos que hemos dejado afuera para ella. It is worth noting that Canaote Monkey Rescue Centre is also an interesting Botanic Garden. It has one of the largest collections of tropical fruit in Venezuela. We harvest fruit from the garden everyday to add to the monkey's meals. This provides them with food that they can easily digest. Elsewhere in the blog I have discussed the special dietary needs of the Howler monkey. Regular readers will know that we often ask for donations to help with the cost of feeding and maintaining our large group of children. This bowl of fruit shows that we make every effort ourselves to provide for our monkeys. Donations come and donations are soon spent. We look for ways of being self sufficient and growing our own fruit is one of those ways.

Los frutos de Cañaote.

Vale la pena señalar que el Centro de Rescate de Monos Cañaote, es también un interesante jardín botánico. Tiene una de las mayores colecciones de frutas tropicales en Venezuela. Nosotros cosechamos fruta de la huerta todos los días para añadir a la dieta de los monos. Esto les proporciona alimento que pueden digerir fácilmente. En el resto del blog he discutido las necesidades dietéticas especiales de los monos aulladores. Los lectores habituales sabrán que a menudo pedimos donaciones para ayudar con el costo de alimentar y mantener nuestro gran grupo de niños. Este plato de fruta demuestra que hacemos todo lo posible por nosotros mismos para ofrecer un buen menú nuestros monos. Las donaciones vienen y se gastan pronto. Buscamos maneras de ser autosuficiente y alimentar con nuestras propias frutas a los monos.

Time passes quickly and it is now just over three months since Nikki was born. She is active and intelligent. She interacts with her family and now has started to reach for solid food and drink. Well done Jaco you are a good mother. Yesterday I saw Nikki being carried by her father Lucio. He is responsible and gentle.and soon handed her back to Jaco but not before he had taken her on a tour around the enclosure. The family are reacting to the impending rain storm. It is common for howlers to greet rain in this way.

Nuevo video del bebe Nikki con su mamá y su papá.
El tiempo pasa rápidamente y es ahora hace tres meses desde que Nikki nació. Ella es activa e inteligente. Ella interactúa con su familia y ahora ha comenzado a llegar a los alimentos sólidos y beber. Bien hecho Jaco eres una buena madre. Ayer vi a Nikki que era llevada por su padre Lucio. Él es responsable y gentil y pronto dio la espalda a Jaco, pero no antes de que él la hubiera llevado en un viaje alrededor del recinto. La familia está reaccionando a la tormenta de lluvia inminente. Es común para los aulladores saludar a la lluvia de esta manera.

Over the last few days, the rains here have been torrential. It has not been possible to take a camera into the compound as a result. Today it has been bright and cheerful and the first thing I saw was Roquacita (in my Video). Roquacita's enclosure adjoins our house and is partly in the corridor in front of my window. It is a large area with ropes, swings and a hammock. However she spends most of her day in the open, where she has a view of all the other monkeys. She loves food and when I enter her space, she comes to her table to see what has been brought. She particularly likes the bowl of fruit juice which I take her from my own breakfast. We have been slow to become friends. She does not like being touched. When it was became clear that I respected this, She started coming quite close to me and now jumps onto my lap. In her outside garden she has an extensive bamboo walkway and two live trees to sit in. She is very much in love with her husband Eric. He is very jealous particularly when he sees her on my lap. He jumps around the enclosure at an alarming speed. I used to think that Howlers were slow moving creatures, forget it. First onto the swing and then onto the top of their house. From there onto the enclosure wall behind my head. It can be unnerving. But he knows me well. I fostered him when he was no more than 500 grams and slept on my shoulder at night. I wanted to include him in the video but he was just too boisterous this morning. Maybe in a few days when he has calmed down.

Roquacita is in very good health. Her coat is beautiful although maybe she is a little fat. When she first came here she was very thin. I believe she had spent some time in a zoo. That must have been a bad experience because I was really worried about her health. She is certainly in good health now. I love her very much and I spend time with her every day.

En los últimos días, las lluvias aquí han sido torrenciales. No ha sido posible tomar fotografías ni videos. Hoy ha sido un día brillante y alegre y lo primero que vi fue a Roquacita (en mi video). Roquacita colinda con nuestra casa y es parte del pasillo frente a la ventana de mi habitación. Es un área grande con cuerdas, columpios y una hamaca. Sin embargo, ella pasa la mayor parte de su tiempo al aire libre, donde tiene una vista de todos los otros monos. Le encanta la comida y cuando entro en su espacio, ella viene a su mesa para ver lo que se le ha traído. A ella le gusta particularmente la taza de jugo de fruta que le llevo de mi propio desayuno. Hemos tardado en hacernos amigos. A ella no le gusta que la toquen. Cuando se hizo claro que yo respeto eso, ella comenzó a llegar muy cerca de mí y ahora salta sobre mi regazo. En su jardín exterior tiene una amplia pasarela de bambú y dos árboles vivos para sentarse. Ella está muy enamorada de su esposo Eric. Él es muy celoso en particular cuando la ve en mi regazo. Salta en todo el recinto a una velocidad alarmante. Yo solía pensar que los Aulladores eran lentas criaturas en movimiento, olvídalo. En primer lugar en el swing y luego en la parte superior de su casa. Desde allí en la muralla detrás de mi cabeza. Puede ser desconcertante. Pero él me conoce bien. Lo he criado desde que pesaba menos de 500 gramos y el durmió en mi hombro durante muchísimas noche. Yo quería incluirlo en el vídeo, pero que era demasiado ruidosa la mañana. Tal vez en unos días cuando se haya calmado.
Roquacita tiene muy buena salud. Su pelaje es hermoso, aunque tal vez está un poco gorda. Cuando llegó aquí estaba muy delgada. Creo que había pasado algún tiempo en un zoológico. Eso debe haber sido una mala experiencia porque yo estaba muy preocupado por su salud. Ella es, sin duda de buena salud ahora. Yo la quiero mucho y paso tiempo con ella todos los días.

A short video of Jake on not his best day.

You will remember that Jake, a very young Howler monkey,was discovered in Merida. He was dirty and covered in his own faeces. He had been kept in a small chicken cage which had not been cleaned since the chickens vacated it. The owners had literally discarded the little monkey as being of no interest and no value.

When the monkey arrived here he was terrified of human contact. Obviously he had experience the worst of human negligence.

Jake is slowly getting used to his new home but clearly he still misses his mother and often I hear him crying. First his mother is killed to gratify the criminals that wanted to sell him for gain. Then he is bought by people who really did not care about him. Now he is with his own people again and is loved. Its all very confusing for the little fellow. But patience will win him and love always finds away.

Un breve video de Jake, no en su mejor día.

Usted recordará a Jake, un mono aullador muy joven, fue descubierto en Mérida. Estaba sucio y cubierto de sus propias heces. A él lo habían mantenido en una jaula de pollos pequeños que nunca había sido limpiada desde que sacaron los pollos. Los dueños lo habían desechado, literalmente, el mono para ellos no tenia ningún valor.

Cuando el mono llegó aquí estaba aterrorizado del contacto humano. Obviamente tenía la peor experiencia por la negligencia humana.
Jake fue poco a poco acostumbrándose a su nuevo hogar, pero es evidente que todavía extraña a su madre y muchas veces lo oigo llorar. En primer lugar su madre muere para satisfacer a los criminales que querían venderlo para obtener ganancias. Luego, es comprado por gente que realmente no se preocupan por él. Ahora él está con los suyos de nuevo y es muy querido. Es todo muy confuso para el pequeño, pero con paciencia el gana confianza y aquí hay mucho amor para él.
