He is big, he is beautiful, I love him BUT he bites.

Your place or mine?

We have thirty monkeys in our care that is twenty five Howler monkeys and five Capuchin monkeys. All of our children with four  exceptions ( born here or just walked in from the forest), come from human homes. Homes that are now peaceful, homes where the tops stay on top of spray cans and where the human children are no longer in danger of being bitten. The fact is that baby monkeys are just like baby kittens and baby puppies. They are irresistible, they are cuddly, and they are lovable. But it is when they grow up that they cause problems either within the family or community. All monkeys bite. So a time comes when for one reason or another, a parting has to be made.
This is a traumatic time for the monkey, a painful time for the owner and human family. Depending on the type of monkey, they can live anything between twenty and forty years. Therefore adopting a monkey is a serious matter. Disposing of a monkey is an even more serious matter. Having committed yourself to the care of a human-like creature and then reneging on your promise to care for him for his whole life, is an event which has serious implications.
There are few refuges for monkeys in Venezuela and so there are those who, having found the Canaote Monkey Rescue Center, breathe a sigh of relief. 'I have found someone to look after the monkey and I can now get on with my life'. The fact of the matter is that there is a moral responsibility to continue to care and be concerned with the welfare of the monkey. There is no moral quick fix. You caused that baby’s mother to be murdered. You bought him at the roadside and you are still morally responsible for him.
Some people make a promise of continuing donations to support their child here at Canaote. Very few people keep that promise. For example this month, only three people have made a donation out of the thirty monkeys we have resident. For the rest, we have to consider them abandoned.
Our financial resources at Canaote are very slight. It is entirely the contribution from my pension from the Government of the United Kingdom. There is no other source of funds. That pension has remained unchanged for the last eighteen years with no increment. Many people express surprise that we are not supported by government grant. We have no financial support for our work.
If you truly loved the monkey you passed to my care or you wish to help the Monkeys of Canaote, please donate and donate regularly. Don’t make me beg.
You have no doubt about my love for these children.

No me hagas rogar.

Cosito's birthday party.

There is an air of suppressed excitement over Cañaote today. Lorries have been arriving with stacks of rented chairs and tables. Flutes of disposable glasses and paper plate are on every available place. Boxes of crisps and paper napkins block the house corridor. The fridges are full of pink jelly. This can only mean one thing. Someone is going to have a party. Our picture shows Cosito having a quick snooze before the party begins.Cosito is three years old today.
Well what a party it was. Schatov and Sophie were the first to arrive. Cosito greeted them at the door, Then MonaLisa, our grand lady walked gracefully in. She pressed something into Cosito's hand; I guess it was a present. Daniel and Samantha came next with a lot of chatter as you would expect and they were followed by the two lovely ladies,Silvia and Nineta. Maniña helped serve the jelly and custard whilst Schatov handed around the cucumber sandwiches. Somehow the sandwiches and the jelly got a bit mixed up but no one seemed to mind. Sophie not being too proud handed out the balloons and the crackers and soon the whole place was popping. Schatov raised his glass and shouted 'toast', Schatov said 'sorry I forgot the toast', everyone laughed and joined in a chorus of 'for he's a jolly good fellow'. Followed at once by 'Happy birthday dear Cosito'. Cosito is clearly a well loved personality in this community. Everyone enjoyed the party and by the time that the last balloon was popped and the last rousing song was sung, we had some very happy and tired monkeys. Cosito said,’ well off to bed'. Then everyone shook Cosito's hand, wished him, 'happy birthday', and left for home.

Like a great pipe organ with 10,000 pipes.

This evening as with many evenings past, the trees around the Canaote compound were alive with Howler/Araguato monkeys. Their songs were joined by the monkeys of Canaote. Altogether an astonishing performance. I was completely in awe. If you have never experience this event, then you have something to look forward to. Just like a great pipe organ, opening up with all it's 10,000 pipes. Alleluya

Aleluya

Cosito's birthday.

Tomorrow, The day we celebrate for Saint Francis of Assisi, is also Cosito's birthday. On the 4th october 2010 Cosito arrived at Canaote. It is our custom, that when we don't know the actual day of birth, to give them the day they arrived at Canaote as their birthday. Yes there will be celebrations with candles and cake. That day three years ago, he weighed under 500 grams. Just look at him now. Characterised by his front teeth protruding slightly but even more by his playfulness. A very charming well tempered monkey.
